Yes this exactly! Have done the same in Eritrea his country. It’s very common! You can build a beautiful 3 story home with marble floors there with $80k CAD (which we did). There, banks aren’t easy to work with so project managers always ask for cash. My parents are janitors and saved all of that in cash and brought it over like this. I don’t think they’ve ever thought to carry bank statements or leave it in the bank seal even though they withdraw the money from their debit from their properly taxed incomes. Usually, we unwrap it to count it, then just put it in whatever bag since the wrap had to be ripped off already, but seeing this made me realize this is expected for the future!

The problem is that a flood of cheap labor is a classic union busting technique. People accepting below poverty wages means that other workers lose the ability to negotiate a living wage.
The government does not want groups of people without children working for poverty wages living 10 to a room and sending money across the border to use the favorable exchange rate to fund a family in another country. This is competing with workers trying to support a family on the same negotiated wage in the host country without an exchange rate (the exchange rate can double the buying power of that wage when looking at the USA/Mexico border or 16X when looking at currencies like the Rand).
Labor unions generally do not mind having illegal immigrant labor as long as they do not undercut the wages of legal labor, but corporations recruit illegal labor specifically to undercut wages.

@RoosterRC Here on planet earth, anybody carrying large sums of cash is almost always involved in illegal activities. If they then lie to the customs agents, it is perfectly reasonable to seize the money. On this show, they often encounter people with minimum wage jobs, or living on welfare, who are traveling with thousands in cash. That is highly suspect. For welfare recipients in the UK, it is specifically illegal, as they are required to declare all assets before suckling on the taxpayer teat. Nearly all of the culprits are from outside the UK, which means they have traveled internationally. Anybody who has ever traveled internationally knows that you are permitted to carry as much cash as you wish, but you are required to declare it, and be prepared to explain where you got the money. That is the law in virtually every country, and it is very easy for law abiding travelers. If, for some absurd reason, I chose to take $20K in cash on my next international vacation, I would of course disclose it, and I could easily produce bank statements to document that I recently withdrew the money, and that I routinely have that amount of money at my disposal. Fortunately, I am not an idiot, so I charge all my travels on credit cards, which earn frequent flier miles (or cash back), as well as numerous consumer protections that are not afforded cash customers. On my last round-the-world trip, I took $1,000 in cash, just for emergencies and tips, and I returned home with about $950.

In East Africa, banks aren’t easy to work with so project managers always ask for cash. My parents are janitors and saved all of that in cash (living way below their means here) and brought it over like this to build their dream retirement home. I don’t think they’ve ever thought to carry bank statements or leave it in the bank seal even though they withdraw the money from their debit from their properly taxed incomes. Usually, we unwrap it to count it (my parents never trust bank machine counting lol) then just put it in whatever bag we have since the wrap had to be ripped off already, but seeing this made me realize this is expected for the future!

I understand why they're concerned about untaxed/illegally obtained money being carried away, but it's ridiculous to expect people to always be able to prove where they got their money, or prove that they have a good reason to carry so much. I've heard of people driving somewhere, getting stopped on the way, and their thousands of dollars is taken from them by police that didn't have any reason to be searching the vehicle in the first place...so it isn't even just trying to cross borders with lots of cash, but pretty much any time cops find that someone has money.
On the other hand, it does make sense to carry documents to prove you have the cash legitimately, just in case something happens. Just because you can't trust the authorities...they're human, after all.
Shows of this sort never, ever show the authorities doing anything wrong...but, in truth, there are crooked border agents (can you think of a position of authority, where none of them are crooks?). I want to see some shows about those kinds of criminals getting busted.

We have a BIG PROBLEM here in the U.S. with Civil Asset Forfeiture - In many cases sny seized assets are allowed to be kept by the agency to use in their budget which encourages the departments to go and "FIND" money...

Yeah that was some bs about them taking the man’s hard earned money. They’re basically saying prove you’re not a criminal or we’ll take your stuff. Imagine this would work for anything else. Prove you didn’t steal your phone? No receipt and bought with cash? We’ll take that phone now. Or like I said anything ever. Ridiculous. Infuriating even.

Safe for the Eritrean taxi driver, I am surprised people still carry cash on them these days. I have been to and/or through Europe a few times from the USA, and at no time did I have more that $200 cash on me outbound. And when returning, I hardly have any foreign currency with me. What I do is call my bank before hand and alert them that I would be using my debit card to while I am in Europe. Problem solved!

17,000 isn’t that much, especially when you have a lot. She has a wealthy look about her. I can see she divided each pouch for what kind of day it would be. One for clothes and a dinner, which was probably 10,000. She rented a car. Paid the hotel upon leaving. She probably met up with wealthy family friends in London. I bet her hotel had a safe. I should’ve looked at her jewelry she’s wearing. But anyway, rich people. 💵 🎉
