What a thrill to be able to hear this event. I couldn't sleep and stumbled across this, as I often do on UTUBE. Now I definitely won't sleep but for the best of reasons! A very special night!
Truly, the term “star studded” had a different meaning than it currently does. It’s an overdose of legends all at the same time. I feel giddy! If the audience had hoarse voices for days, I’d understand - I’d almost feel incapable of functioning after attending something like this!
Rise(pronounced REEzuh) Stevens lived from 1913 to 2013. She had a long and successful career at the Met and her roles included Carmen, Octavian, Orfeo, Cherubino and Delilah.
Was there. Never forget that entrance of Birgit in that Rosenkavalier set. It was very emotional. She pushed us back in our seats with that voice of hers. Sat, April 22, 1972
I seem to remember seeing a youtube video of her entrance and subsequent performance (although not the full 15 minutes of music, just this final part). But I can no longer find any video showing her entrance.
My God! These were the ones I grew up with (I was 6 when this took place).....their recordings Anyway.....some of them retired in my youth but most were still singing into my adulthood...and one....is ...still....singing.....NOW (2024) PLACIDO.....Opera fans of the 21st century just don't understand that singers like Nilsson ever existed. She could bring down the house every time. It is a marvelous debate as to from 1960 to her retirement, if Nilsson was the definitive Isolde, Brunhilde, Turandot, Salome and Elektra ALL......
na was ich da alles entdecke.
For over 20 years olympic singing has sucked. Or most of the time. I could go into reasons for this, but I don't have time to give a dissertation about the science of singing. Thanks for this, dear man!!

No, Risë, and I love you dearly. The conductor of the "Manon Lescaut" Act II duet was not Molinari-Pradelli. Or am I somehow conflating my galas? The mind starts to go, especially about things no one else cares about anymore....
Well... THIS is a Gala!!!! THESE are TRUE voices!!!! These are TRUE ARTISTS!!! Thank you, thank you!
Sadly, there are no voices like these today. Magnificent!

This was the first time I saw Pavarotti on television!
Caballé-Domingo , greatest in Manon Lescaut duetto !!!❤❤
My beloved Caballe'
It does not get any better then this GALA night...the GOLDEN AGE of OPERA rises into a time only described as breathless and goose bumps!❤❤❤
*Silver Age
Absolutely 💯
Some fabulous artists on show Tucker was brilliant for his age A truly great cast
Right. He was 58 here -- just 4 years before his death in 1975.
Great singing like this is gone and it is never coming back....
Once In A Lifetime !!
Unfortunately the performances are not complete. And not all of them are here. It would be great to see the whole recording.
Thank you, forever, for this. I've always wished to see it. THIS is great singing.
I was overjoyed to come across this video of these magnificent artists. They dont make singers like this anymore. Thank you. Subscribing!
Love Risë Stevens..
Lincoln Center looks beautiful, even in black and white!
Steven's. So classy. ❤❤❤❤❤

53:00 SOUNDS LIKE WE RE AT THE SUPER BOWL!
43:00 what an Otello he would have been.....

I bought the recording of this event the minute it came out.
I've had this album for many years
Finally,it came out in cd years after this production

Bravi, bravi...!!!
Thank you!!!
thank you so muchhhhh for this
I wish I had been there.
La Peters.... mai riuscita a parlare bene l'italiano... terrible accent...but ( però) voce d'angeli !!!!!
SO EXCITING! HOW I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO BE ABLE TO SEE THE WHOLE GALA.
Luciano hadn't grown his beard yet!
What year ?
WHO is the soprano next to Corelli ?
Tersa Żulis - Gara
Sorry. Teresa Żylis-nGara
Wow. Was this actually on television?
Does anyone know when ?
Yes, it was on TV, but not on PBS. The show was aired on a commercial network, CBS!

Date?
I wonder why Maria Callas wasn't there? Was this during her period of early retirement?
Callas had not sung at the Met since 1964. Her recital tour a few years later showed she was at the end of her career.
What year was this?
April 22, 1972
non lo so
hi luchiaon paver;tytl
Tebaldi ????
Qualcosa con del Monaco?
Mario si stava ritirando dalle scene. All'inizio degli anni '70 fece solo alcune registrazioni.
Veramente si è ritirato nel 1975
This was the Met gala, at this point Del Monaco hadn't sung at the Met in something like 13 years.
Teresa Zyli Scara.. (sp!)

Dorme?
