Thanks so much. With your videos I built my own yard gate. I'm not the greatest at DIY either. Cheers!
gracias por tu canal q ha sido de gran ayu d a con tus proyectos bendiciones
very good thanks for giving us your time and skills
Thanks for your instructional video, just finished my gate, it looks amazing, all my neighbours are asking where I bought it from! :-) :-)
really nice to watch a video from an Englisg guy.. I have just set up a wood shop which cost me a fortune, now just need to learn how to use all te tools i have lol... keep your videos coming please, Regards. Steve
Ahhmmmmmm.......
Perfect timing. I'm going to be building a gate in the next couple of weeks. I'll run this design past "the department of planning and finance" and see what she thinks. Cheers!
Mark Lindsay CNC ohhh im good for timing if nothing else mate. Hope your build goes well
The department of planning and finances 😅😂
@@easymedia7988 the boss you mean, she who must be obeyed.
Super video , I've just made my own version . Cheers!
Enjoyed watching that mate never made a gate before and after watching your video it was good too learn from thanks can't wait for pt2
BIGBOY'S DIY i hope it's useful if there is anything else you need to know let me know mate... as i said its not the strongest by far but for what it is it will last more than long enough
BIGBOY'S DIY forgot to ask tell me if I'm being nosey but I see you dropping the vinal guys in a lot of ypur vids.. are they sponsors.??
Lowes joinery and spray painting specialist they made me a banner and some stickers and I said I'd promote them in my next 5 videos
nice one mate looking forward to part 2
mike nicholas thanks mate... I'm coming to say now new video is up on a wensday... nice mid week treat 😁
Her at idea. Good job!
Great job. Thanks
Tha is mate
Good video, thanks
you left the most important part of on how you got angels for the bracing....
Angle is not critical but as a general rule it should not be more than 45 degrees from vertical.
Great video mate, do you have any more info about angling the brace. I’ve got quite a large double gate to build (about 2200 in total). Each gate will be double braced just like you have demonstrated. The only concern I’ve got is making sure my brace angles are perfect. Thanks in advance
Thanks for the vid, would you not glue it to make it stronger ?
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Thank you very much for this . Will be making mine in the summer.🙏🙏
Anatomy is the word I think you were looking for. 😊
thats it lol
Was the timber pre treated? Did the same build at work and got told I was wrong for using tongue and groove flooring because it’ll expand and swell up even after I treated the timber?
thumbs up
Thanks
If this is a gate wouldn't it be better if the pickets had a small gap between them? After all it will be out in the weather. So it can expand in damp weather contract in dry weather?
That’s why he didn’t glue the tongue and groove joints so the timber can move in wet or hot weather
Haven't read through all the comments but would it be stronger to treat the boards before assembling the gate?
👍😎
What's the erbauer plunge saw like ? Any good ???
got a short video coming up for that pal so watch this space ...
Thank you so so so much. Just wanted a simple gate. Iv never made one, 6os is not the age women should be starting these projects. Do you not use glue, how does the wood expand and shirk with weather. Thank you
AT LAST! Someone who knows the correct orientation for the braces! 👍
Angle looks well past 45 degrees for a true compression brace though
Waiting for the part where you mark the arche.
❤❤it😊😊
This video is just what I need but can this job be done without a sash clamp? Are there any tricks to getting the ledges on properly without one?
Yes there sure is... if you screw 2 bits of wood on either side of the gate... about 1 inch gap.. and make some wedges you can tap the wedges in and as they get thicker the wood will move in
@@lowesjoinery3031 That would be just the job. Great advice, many thanks!
I was surprised to see the T&G boards clamped tight (or were there spacers there between each one?). No room for expansion. I made a similar gate one summer and even though I left decent gaps, the boards swelled so much in winter that the gate bowed.
Nice build just wondering if you have any stronger builds that you mentioned
Yes the mortise and tenon joint ones
I would prefer to see vertical stiles or at least one on the hinged side to improve the transfer of loading from the braces to the hinges. A stile on the side of the catch will give more rigidity in a taller gate but adds weight and is probably a judgement for the particular situation.
Would a 4x2 frame be a bad idea? I have lots of it at hand.
Hey... you can use 4x2.. just take into account the weight aspect of the gate with the post etc... also I like to use 5x1 as it's a nice wide span to hold all the boards together if it was narrower it wouldn't be supported enough for me...
How come the track doesn't need clamping down? Is it non slip, or some kind of wizardry?
Non-slip foam on the underside. It works fairly well in most cases. Personally I add clamps if the cut is really important.
Wow you work really fast. 😂 😂
Yes that my normal speed lol
@@lowesjoinery3031 😂🤣🤣
@@lowesjoinery3031 when you was walking round and using the mallet at warp speed, my mind was hearing the benny hill theme tune
Want to have a go myself - inspired!!
But where do you get that wood??
All I can find is horrible 12mm feather edge!!
Please help
It's called tounge and groove or matchboard...around 18mm thick if i remember. ?
@@lowesjoinery3031 Yeah that tongue and groove looks nice. Nice job.
Hiya mate.. You said to put the angle pieces going away from the hinges yet on the picture before the video starts you can see you've put the hinges the opposite side... is there something im missing?
hello there so I should of explained a little bit more on this so the the top brace will start on the opposite side to the hinge .. then you just copy that for the bottom brace .. as if you was to look at the gate and vision it dropping.. the weight from the top of the gate will spread the loads down to the bottom hinge..? hope that make sense
@@lowesjoinery3031 perfect sense thank you 👌
What a great no-nonsense video.
I was looking at the Wickes gate kits and thinking 'I can do better than this for less'.
I'm fairly handy, but this sort of project is a 'big' one for me as I normally don't have to be mm accurate.
Is there any sense in gluing the T&G or the ledges and braces, or will that cause problems with expansion/contraction.
What size screws did you use ?
Link underneath.
Is match board tong n groove?
yes
what size of the boards on the frame, how thick
what thick shiplap clading
and what screws
The screws are linked underneath and I think he said 18mm boards.
Why the masking tape on the side 🤔
Just to try help with any dust that might fly out
Awesome are you going to do a blade review ?
Matching board is absolute dog bowl. Even stained and primed before it moves all over the shop I’ve stopped using it
You left that knot on the middle bored . You should have moved that bored to the edge then cut it off
great video, but why such a high volume for the music, nearly blew my bloody ears off
Sorry mate I'm still learning ad I go... I hope my latest videos are a bit better to listen and watch to...
You got to stop touching your nose 😂
your advice on bracing is wrong, how are you leaving this video up????
How is it that its wrong?
You appear to contradict yoirsef reagrding the braces on the door in this viseo you did. ruclips.net/video/JInlwvANc1M/видео.html which way are the braces supposed to go?
hello there.. i apologies if i do.. the braces need to go the way i have done them in this vid... always pointing away from the hinge
Them boards looked awful. Someone is gonna have fun fitted that bowed and twisted
Gates still going strong and straight but thanks for the comment
Measuring in inches 🤦🏼
Yes mate how I was brought up...
Lowes Joinery it just proper confuses me. When I saw how many T&Q boards there were I knew you were building a gate near dead on the size I needed and then had inches mentioned. I was like nooooo haha. Good work anyway bud.
@@johnlever6696 its simple john! An inch is 25.4 millimeters so 10 inches is 254.00mm. If you prefer cm just move the decimal point one place left.
25.4cm. With practice you can work it out quick in your head. 1ft 2in 350mm or 35cm.
3mm is approx 1/8, so 7/8 is 7x3=21mm.
Knowledge is only memory mate and you more you memorise, the easier it is 👍
gbwildlife uk honestly I’ve tried mate. I really struggle with it. I’ve always used mm and worked with my uncle on and off for 20 years. I worked with him one day and all of a sudden he is using inches and expected me to. I tried but nope. I just don’t get the fractions. I think any form of measurement that has to be fractionated should be avoided. Then when I watch videos that’s all about inches my head falls off haha.
Sorry bud but i wouldn’t make an external gate out of that stuff. It will shrink/expand and as it’s not pressure treated no amount of paint/coatings will protect it from rotting, water will get into the tongue/groove which is unprotected. Sorry to be negative
Hi Azza,
I was thinking the same thing. I’m going to construct my side gate when the weather gets better. If I use “treated” T&G will I be able to use a Cuprinol garden shades colour on it?
Lacking lots of information like all he measurement sorry to say
What measurements would you like to know... most of the sizes are all governed by the size of the gate being made..
Gates are NEVER a one size fits all proposition. You need to use your own measurements
Why would someone supply measurements when it will be a different size to the one you would require? These sort of videos lead you to water, can't teach how to drink it.
Why, oh why, no glue..??.. Applying about 10 pence worth of glue would #1 made this gate a lot, lot stronger.. #2 removed any voids from where the wood is joined, thus keeping out any water.. #3 if this gate lasts years and years longer than one made by one of your competitors, that's going to do wonders for your reputation as a craftsman.. I cut up a similar sort of gate not long ago, for fire wood, which had been treated twice a year with a proper, oil based treatment.. Said gate was in perfect condition on all external surfaces, which was testimant to how well it had been looked after.. The only place it had rotted was behind All of the ledges, and ALL of the braces, thus proving my point.. A little bit of glue wood have prevented water ingress behind, and all would have been good.. I fear you work will go the same way..
You never glue on ledges
You made it wrong. First learn then teach.
Thanks fir your comment... would you like to elaborate on your comment and if I did make it wrong.. then perhaps people can learn from your advice.. thanks
@@lowesjoinery3031 You braced 100% incorrectly
