I learn the cheat codes from this with my Tips & Tricks Holiday VIdeo Game Codebook from 2002, but I played Sonic the Hedgehog on my Sega Genesis at my now-late grandmother's in 2003. I can still play this game on the Genesis today.
That's really neat! I remember learning the debug code from some kids at school myself. It's great that you can still enjoy the game today the way it's meant to be! Not too shabby at all!
I...actually knew like none of this, besides the level select and debug mode. I'm gonna have to try these out and break my game thoroughly next time I play. That whole camera panning down bug seems like a huge oversight, and I love it. Also, you cheeky bugger and your jokes. Very funny =P
I love having fun! ^_^ I guess I used them so often I just assumed everyone knew about some of these (Well, all except the Lives Underflow glitch, I just found out about that one when I went to make this video.). If you find some interesting areas that work with the camera pan or screen zip glitches, post them up! I'm interested to see if there's anything good I missed!
Wow what a blast from the past. I first discovered the up C down C cheat by accident when I was a kid back in 1992 and was very confused by it. I thought the game had bugged on me but eventually came to realise it was an actual cheat.
By accident? That's awesome! Were you doing the level select code first or just got super lucky? That's definitely awesome (and would have been awesome to tell the kids at school before they ever figured it out!)! Definitely not too shabby!
@@JustSomeRetroGamer As far as i recall I can’t remember trying the level select but the fact that the sequence is so similar I think I was most likely trying that and accidentally triggered the edit cheat. I remember being the first kid in my housing area to complete Sonic 2 And I remember being on the last level and having about 15 kids all around me watching to see if I could beat doctor Eggman. I felt like a celebrity for a day 🤣😂🤣
@@alexandercarder2281 That's awesome! I'm glad you didn't cave under the pressure, I don't know how I'd fair under a live audience. ^_^ I remember doing that fight for the first time thinking you can only hit the mech in the pants... lol! That was long fight!
Ah Sonic 2, I loved messing around in that game! Fun fact! Did you know that the Level Select Code corresponds with Yuji Naka's birthday? (1965, 9, 17). The Debug code I *think* is the release date of Sonic 2, which is 1, 9, 9, 2, 1, 1, 2, 4 Great stuff! I should do a video on this one! Kudos!
Using the Debug Code, you're almost invulnerable... and can place down rings too! If I come across any other glitches or exploits, I may make another video. Kudos!

Are you doing both level select and debug codes? If you're just doing the debug codes, you have to hold A and start until the level loads in. If you're doing the debug from the level select, you can choose a level, hold a and start until the level loads as well. Once loaded, release A and start.

@@bobfromsbreal554 Are you doing this on a real Sega Genesis console or on an emulator? If it's on emulation, your A button might not be the A button. For me, the emulated 'A' button is actually 'X' on my Xbox One Controller. Otherwise, maybe your A button is broken? If you start a normal game, A, B and C buttons all jump. If you can't jump with your A button, that might be it too. Unfortunately, outside of these things, there's really not much else to try. Sorry I can't be more help. :(
The timing of some of these is tight, but does work on real hardware and emulators. I've not tried it on that one myself, but it could be a different revision (I believe there are two). Still, thanks for letting me know! I'll have to try it on that platform once I get one!
@@CB_gt Not sure why it doesn't work. I tested this on my Sega CDX and got the illegal instruction error just like the emulator. It's possible you're console treats this error differently or you have a different version of Sonic 1. Sorry about that!
It should work with any controller. I had a 'High Frequency' controller back in the day and pulled off the cheat codes with no issue. I did however, notice this code is harder to pull off on some portables with emulation (sometimes pressing up would register as up/left instead of directly up). It still worked though... But I had to give it multiple tries.

Awesome. Debug stuff and glitches are always fun.
I love when when devs leave that stuff in! The debug room in Final Fantasy VII was another really good one!

Sonic 2.

actually you can even enable debug mode by doing the same controls as the level select and then hold A when picked a level
This is true! I should have mentioned that. My bro and I used to love making mini obstacle courses in all the different stages. Good stuff!

It wont work. Idk if im doing somthing wrong or what. It makes the ding sound but when i press a + start theres no debug
For debug mode btw

On the UK mega drive version you only have to press A and start (after the upC downC leftC rightC of course)

All these codes should work exactly the same on both PC / Emulation and real consoles.
