  • Lisa Gade reviews the late 2019 Lenovo Yoga C940 14”, a convertible Ultrabook with Intel 10th gen Ice Lake 10nm CPUs, Intel Iris Plus graphics and a rotating soundbar. The laptop is available with full HD and 4K UHD displays, and we have both in this review. Both versions support pen and touch and they come with a rechargeable pen that lives in a silo. The Yoga has Thunderbolt 3, a backlit keyboard and Microsoft Precision trackpad. The C940 competes with the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 and the HP Spectre x360 13”.

    16gb ram, 1Tb, 4K model.
Battery life 6.5 to 7 hours average on video streaming.
Pen is just wow & sound bar hinge is just amazing experience.

I got mine about a month ago. The i7 with 1080p, 16 GB ram, 512 GB, iron gray. For just web browsing and whatnot, I get around 10 hours of battery. Very quiet when doing the same; fan doesn't even run. My benchmarks of its samsung PM981 nvme are actually better than the samsung 970 Pro nvme that I have in my desktop. For general computing, and some builds of software projects, it performs great. I love that Lenovo allows the TDP to be changed on the fly between 15W or 25W using the Fn+Q key, to get some extra "ooomph". Beware, though that anything where all the cores get completely maxed out for a length of time - e.g. handbrake or 7zip compression - the heat pretty quickly causes it to throttle down to 2.5 or 2.6 Ghz (its max turbo is 3.90). My only real complaint (which will sound silly to most) is the keyboard backlight: it turns off after just 15 seconds of inactivity (turns back on, of course, if you press any key). So, really annoying to use in a dim or darkened room: I take my hands of the keyboard for a few seconds to scroll down a page, and when I go to type again, I'm like "where's the keys"?

Thanks for the great review, Lisa. I just got one and opted for the 500 nit screen. The battery life of the high-nit screen, in practice, isn't an issue because the screen is so good and rich and detailed that in a normal indoor environment, the most comfortable setting is 4 or 5 of 10. That extra brightness is great for watching content, but for standard work or browsing, 4 or 5 are great for indoor home/office use. For comparison, I normally run my T480s screen at 8 of 10, and in theory it's a 350nit (LG/Philips WQHD) screen, so the C940's battery life is the same or a little better. The keyboard isn't quite as 'Cadillac' as my T480s, but it's very good and has a nice precision to it. For anyone but a novelist, it's absolutely fine. It reminds me of a slightly lower action and more clicky version of the Apple wireless keyboard, and the touchpad feels identical to a circa 2012 Macbook, which IMHO was the pinnacle of touchpads in size and feel and better than the slightly higher friction Thinkpad touchpad. What a wonderful laptop. The only downsides were having to de-bloat it and go into BIOS to enable Fn to work properly (it ships disabled, which is opposite of how Thinkpads ship, so you have to use the Fn key to change volume/brightness etc.)

I bought the c940 FHD model in December. I loved the laptop initially, and still do, but after about a month it started to freeze up a lot and I had to manually shut it off and restart. Now its freezing up several times a day and some weird red smbols and patterns show up on the screen when it locks up. I just contacted Lenovo to send it in for repair. I dont think a three month old laptop should be failing already, let alone one that is $1200 which is a lot of money to me.

I have owned several YOGA style Lenovo laptops, and considered this model until I saw the soldered in RAM and Wi-Fi card... Typing this on a two week old HP ENVY x360 15, powered by an AMD RYZEN 5 3500U CPU. This is a very nice rig with great Bang & Olufsen sound, great battery life, very nice FHD IPS display with Radeon Vega graphics, good thermal control, all aluminum construction with great workmanship, w/ keypad, precision touch pad, came with the HP tilt-pen, etc, etc... And with non-soldered RAM and Wi-Fi card.
$509.99 from the HP store with Military discount, and so far I am pleased, especially for the price.

I bought the C940 Yoga, top of the line model, the image quality is fantastic but I also wanted the Yoga for drawing, Well, there is a big issue with the reverse fold format and thats zero access to any keys so I found for instance I was wanting to press CTRL Z to undo but I couldn't because I had no access to the keyboard, in addition to this you MUST wear one of the drawing gloves becasue palm rejection is non existent pretty much, to cap this off, the pen itself though comfortable enough its way to small to actually draw anything accurately, at least for me. As a normal laptop and one that you can use touch screen nicely its quite nice and you could also sign forms and the like but as a drawing or editing tablet, unless you can connect a seperate keyboard and mouse, ive not tried then using the laptop as a drawing or photo editing tablet is not my recommendation.

More likely than not, I will get the base configuration with the 16 GB RAM upgrade and call it good from there. good review. i just picked up the c940 fhd. thought about the 4k model, but i just didn't want to take an unnecessary hit on battery life. i'm liking it so far and the screen is bright enough for me (i was a bit concerned about that going in). in fact, i don't even have it on the brightest setting at the moment. my only gripes after using it for a few days are that i probably would have liked a slighter taller screen and i don't find the 100% tablet form (with it folded all the way back) to be very useful it's too cumbersome that way, but i feel that way with every 2 in 1. if i wanted a pure tablet i'd get an ipad pro. what i do like is tent mode when using the touchscreen and the sound bar is the real deal. the browsing experience is quick as well. long story short, it's a versatile machine and like anything versatile, you may not love everything about it, but so far the benefits outweigh the costs for me. i looked at the spectre (touchpad was too small) and xps (didn't love the keyboard and it was a bit small), so i ended up going with this. also, considered a macbook pro, but i just felt like i was getting more with the yoga c940. wouldn't surprise me if apple caves at some point and develops their own 2 in 1.

Got one with i7 16GB 1TB FHD on black Friday sale and the fan kicks in very loud swoosh with any game and CPU load and top row keyboard gets burning hot. otherwise very cool no fan needed at all and I get 2-3 days of normal work out of it, more like 18 hours for each charge. 4k definitely shows texts better but I could manage without it to get extra juice. The screen is super glossy and painful in a bright room and brightness on the other hand can't get dim enough at night! Solved it with an app. speakers are giving full and rich feeling but they fail speaker quality test for noise and frequency range. Realized it when I was listening to some music. Some low frequency tones not even coming out of speakers. Charging 5-100% takes 3 hours or so, slow in my opinion. touchpad is definitely worse than Surface pros. lower edge is so sharp and hurt your palm when using touchpad unlike surface pro or alcantara Surface laptops. I will return it or pass it to family. Oh! and ram utilization is crazy! at least 1 GB more than surface pro with all that hidden lonovo bloatware. Surface pro is really a better machine.

Hi Lisa, big fan of your videos especially the MSI GE75 you reviewed earlier in the year. I was wondering if you might have heard anything about an AMD variant of the GE75 on the horizon? I'm sure there will probably be an announcement at CES in January but I was wondering if you might know anything about price, performance etc for something similar to the Intel Core i7 9750H (2.60 GHz) and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070.
Going by products released from AMD this year do you think laptops that run on AMD's new cpu's and gpu's might run a bit cooler than the Intel/Nvidia variants. I've read a fair few reviews for the current GE75 models and the biggest gripe buyers seemed to have with them was how hot they ran(90 degrees+). I'm a bit worried about thermal throttling if I buy a current model.
Keep up the good work ;)

Not sure if you are able to measure/compare that (some reviewers like rtings do this and I find it tremendously useful). I know they are glossy but there can be huge differences, e.g. I know macbooks have probably the best anti-reflective glossy coatings so I'd love to see that comparison even if just subjective with a video demonstration included). Thanks for the great review Lisa! Yours have been my go-to laptop reviews for 6 years! =)
I'm curious, did your test models have any touchpad sensitivity issues? When doing either of the following motions on my C940 (i7, 16GB, FHD) it had issues registering the movement:
    1) slowly moving a finger 1-3 millimeters back and forth from an original resting point
    2) slowly moving a finger across the touchpad; the first 1-3 millimeters would go unregistered causing "lag" with the cursor
In general use, these caused frequently inaccurate/jagged cursor movements which were especially noticeable when trying to do any precise touchpad tasks. There's a subset of C940 users that have been having these problems and we're trying to get a sense of how widespread the issue is while troubleshooting a fix. Any feedback on your experience with the touchpad would be greatly appreciated!

Sir Ivn Hi, I bought the c940 on Black Friday. As far as I understand it, based on benchmarks, the 10th generation chip is slightly faster. However, such an advantage probably isn’t even noticeable in everyday use. The biggest plus the 10th generation chip has are actually the integrated Iris Plus graphics. So, if you don’t plan on doing much graphics intensive work, such as photo editing or light gaming, then you’ve definitely made a solid choice with the c930. Enjoy your machine!

I bought the c930 2 months ago with the top specs, i7, 16g, 1 tb and 4k screen for $1050. I know I got a steal. I can tell you that for most everyday tasks I can't imagine needing the c940's upgraded specs unless you do online content creation, graphics work, video/photo editing and other system taxing things. Even then I would think the c930 would handle most of those needs pretty well but I don't push the limits that way so you might have a different experience.

I noticed that Lisa tends to go hard on the Glossy screens of Lenovo but with all honesty, it's not that bad at all. The glossy screen is no different than the latest HP models if not slightly better. I also find the Glossy screen on the Lenovo C940 much better than the one you get on the Huwaei MateBook. I'm not saying Lisa is wrong but from experience, the impression she gives on the Lenovo screen might be a bit misleading. On the other hand, the glossy screen on the Lenovo C740 is very glossy and inferior.

For anyone considering getting this for note-taking mainly, don't. It is too thick/bulky for note-taking in tablet mode. The hinge-side is too big and the pen is pretty bad (compared to Surface pen or Apple pencil). Note-taking experience is 30 times better on Surface Pro and iPad Pro.
Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent laptop, just not for note-taking.

There must be different builts for average customers and established youtube tech review channels, because the fans in my c940 are miniature jet engines, running as soon as and as long as the power supply is connected. The complaints throughout the internet are legion, and the reactions of the disfunctional Lenovo "support" confirm that this is not a minor bug which could be fixed by a software update. During my first (and last) meeting with this device the noise was so embarrassing I had to shut it down. Simply intolerable. I was using a Yoga 3 Pro for 5 years before and was totally satisfied, so this is really not a question of excessive expectations.
