I'm extremely humbled from this experience and seeing the messages coming through from some of the most respected anglers in the world is actually pretty surreal. Hearing Jake explain to me over and over just how special this fish is, that "this just doesn't happen, you can go your whole life and never get near a kingfish like this on top'' kinda rattles me. I also have this weird sense of why me? It should have been Jake, Hamish or Tim's fish, guys that have dedicated their lives to topwater fishing, casting hundreds of thousands of times, chasing that one fish for years.
I haven't fished since my teens but this year at 40 I've picked the rod back up. I'm absolutely obsessed with topwater and extremely dedicated. I've put in so much work in the area where I got this fish, assessing water temps, currents, days upon days of constant casting for very little action. My Dad has been so incredibly patient idling me around that zone to cast, so to get this fish where my parents live, on my Dad's boat is so special to me. Rockabout may not be the flashest boat on the water but man it has raised some fish over the years.

Jake I owe most of the knowledge and skills I've gained to you bro, you've given us so much time, valuable information and tips that has taken you so many years to build up, thanks bro. Hamish from Nacl Lures, mate you got me through that fight, I had nothing left in the tank but you pulled me through with the encouragement I needed and you were incredible on the leader, thanks! I also need to thank Milan and Nato, you both let us know exactly where those fish were holding and to stay put, the further bust ups were smaller kings, most wouldn't do that, absolute gentlemen! Thanks Mum and Dad for looking after the kids while I went on a fishing bender too haha!
We had been on an Island rock since sunrise. I was running on 2hrs sleep and It was extremely hot with no shade. By 1pm I had literally hit rock bottom, not even a follow, I was ready to swim home. Milan and Nato came by and informed us they had been on several 25kg plus fish further off so at 3pm we made the call to hop back on the boats, Hamish jumped in with me and from the first cast we were on! Over the next 3 hours we had an incredibly fun session with fish over the 20kg mark. By 6pm we were absolutely exhausted but the fishing was so hot that we said "one more drift to take our last casts". There was little bird activity but we went over some good sign in about 15-20m of water so I stopped to check it out. On the 3rd cast I'd barely swam my lure before it was demolished, I distinctly remember the ridiculous size of its tail breaching on the take and said myself "Oh no you've done a mischief here" from that point I spent a good amount of time completely railed, I had serious drag to beat the sharks but this fish still did some epic runs, my spool had paint on it from the boat gunwale. By mid fight I could barely hold the rod with my right hand anymore (I fish handle left) Hamish just kept telling me "you got this bro, this is the fish!" When it got to the surface we were in shock, I was shaking and very nervous for the lip gaff but Hamish nailed it. We were just stunned, Hamish thought it was gonna go off the mat. I couldn't even lift the fish or hold it properly for a photo, I nearly fell off the boat with it haha. The size marks are there on the mat, in our state of heat stroke I don't think we even recorded its true length correctly. We called 137 in the video but it looks to be more like 138cm plus.
I caught It on a Hammerhead Cherry Boy 240, Daiwa Certate 18000, Daiwa Spartan 8'5 PE 6-8, Varivas Avani Casting PE8, Varivas Ocean Record shock leader 180lb, Suteki 5/0 Crafter barbless assist on the tail, Owner 4/0 treble with crushed barbs center. He hooked on the assist. FG knot and a uni knot on a Sasame 2/0 power swivel. A mix of Jigstar H and XH split rings on the swivel and lure.
Just to finish, this ain't no brag, I felt like a fish of this calibre on top deserved a story and I truly wish the same will come to every guy and girl out there that loves topwater. It was one of those really special days with an incredible bite in an area that happened to be holding super big fish. Milan messaged me later saying that was the best kingi fishing he has ever experienced so that says something! Congrats to everyone that caught epic fish that day! you're the man bro !! i've been casting for 20 years now .... still chasing this lifetime fish. Time will come. Much respect to all topwater stickbaiting anglers . When you know you know ! Keep casting
Our best on charters last season was 132cm, it went 32.5kg, so that fish must be close to 40? Excellent effort lads, most wouldnt be able to land one this size
