    Back when I used to breed budgie I had this wonderful pair that would give me extremely vibrant colored offspring, I even got a pied budgie once. One day I stuck my hand in the nest to check for any I hatched egged and the female bit me and drew blood. I hadn’t even finished taking out my hand when the male flew in squawking and pecked the female a few times. Ever since they female would fly out while I check and then flew in. He eventually passed away due to old age, but I remember seeing that he had a smile😢 rip pancho you’ll never be forgotten

    Got one 3 days ago. What worked for us: Get a young budgie. Sit by the cage. Place hand inside but stay still, start making small finger movements - dont move towards thr budgie. Do that throughout the day. Play "happy budgie music" Our budgie was eating out of our hands within 24 hours. She was out the cage by end of day 2 and let us put her back in the cage, give belly rubs etc. We still do the hand thing throughout the day, I still give her breakfast by hand. I spent a LOT of time with my hand in an awkward position that first day, but it was worth it!

    I've had one of my budgies for about 2 or 3 years, and the other one 1 year. we haven't trained them at all that much we only feed them millet treats with our hands sometimes. so I was thinking it's too late to train them. but maybe it's not! • @misty_blue
      @misty_blue 3 года назад +8

      I was thinking the same, but I tried click/target stick training and they did become a bit tamer 😍 It just takes a lot more effort and time than when they're alone 🙃
      The trick is to break things down in very small steps. Like, if you try with a target stick, the first days you can just hold the stick near the cage, so they get used to it, the next days, you can move a few centimeters closer etc.
      The most important thing is to watch their body language and the moment they look less calm, you take one step back until they're calm again.
      Of course, I cannot hold my budgies like in this video. Right now, they're OK with hopping on my finger/hand and they also follow the target stick around. It's possible to make more progress, but unfortunately the last weeks I havened had time 😅

    It took me 3 days to train my 2 month old budgie that I got from a breeder. I naively thought that this was how all budgies were. So my next budgie I got was a 5 year old rescue. Oh boy was I wrong. Her previous owner never did any training at all with her, and allowed her to free-fly all day AND NIGHT, with zero structure, and kept food and snacks available to her at all times. So she doesn’t care about humans at all, and thinks of humans as her hotel staff who come and provide her fresh food and water, but that she doesn’t have to deal with. She puts herself to bed at night, which is lovely. But I need to be able to have the option of leaving the house or the room every now and then, but I can’t with her flying free, as she SCREAMS VERY LOUDLY ALL DAY if I leave the room. CONSTANTLY. It’s unbearable and I don’t want to get complaints from neighbors. I made a mistake and now I don’t know what to do about it because the training process for a rescue budgie is NOT the same as for a young budgie that hasn’t had an entire lifetime of terrible habits that it picked up. And don’t ever let anyone tell you differently. Rescuers are great. God bless them. But not everyone’s lifestyle is set up to rescue, and so people shouldn’t be pressured into getting rescues or be told that they’re a bad person if they want to get a bird, but can’t get a rescue. Yes, not all rescues are the same. But be warned - many come with challenges that may never be able to be trained away

    Some of our budgies are semi trained because I was training them together, but it's true that it's very hard to train them when they're together. It takes months and I've only been able to gain some trust. They usually end up pushing each other away or they just talk to each other and ignore me 😂
    Two of them do hop on my finger/hand when I extend it to them 😍 One of the females will come straight away when she sees a millet spray. The other female always keeps a safe distance 😋 Although she did hop on my husband's finger once when she couldn't find the cage and she accepted our help 😍
    I think it's possible to train them when they are together, but of course you cannot expect the same results as in this video. It takes all the time and patience and perseverance you can find ⌚💪😋

      I don´t think so, I had a Green budgie which I DID tame in a day but that´s because the budgie was used to seeing people, but not to be touched. I spent hours with it and around 5:21 it was tame. In general you can´t really tame a budgie in a day, I think it really depends if it´s used to humans. I had another budgie which took me a month to tame because it was not as used to human contact. So yeah, I think it really depends on if it sees humans or if its just locked away.
