Sediment Bowl Problems and Failure to Start ― Tractor Saga Continues...

  • I have no idea why my Ferguson TO-20 Tractor is not starting! My spark plug tester broke this summer and was never replaced, so after this video was produced Izzy and I ran to town to pick up a new one. I got an American made one this time, and I think it will be a big help. What I am going to do today is replace all of the plugs with new, freshly gapped ones (and inspect the old ones as they come out), then run the spark plug tester while trying to start the tractor with the new plugs. I believe I'll spritz some starting fluid in the cylinders while I'm at it. I will also test the plug wires while I'm at it.
    If the problem is not at the plugs or plug wires and is not the electronic ignition, I'll move back to the coil and test that -- I put fresh batteries in the multimeter to do that. I have a feeling there is nothing wrong with the electrical system, and if that is the case, I'll have to remove and at least clean the carburetor. Whatever happens today, tomorrow I will be putting the hood back on, fill the tires, and roll the tractor outside so I can work on the things that need to be worked on in the machine shed.

    It might be the float is sticking. There is an air inlet in the bottom of the carb that breaks the vacuum. My Ford 9n i just got running after 20 years sitting has the same issue with gas flow.

    Hi...just found your channel...I have a Ferguson TO30...1951...I had a lot of the same problems you had...I couldn't find a filter screen that matched my fuel bowl so I replaced the whole fuel bowl...I also changed my gas cap...mine looked as bad as yours does...it made a world of difference because it's a vented cap which should be used on these Fergusons since the are gravity fed gas which needs air to allow the fuel to flow correctly...I just am having the same leaking problem you showed in your other video on the start up after rebuilding your carburetor...looks like I'll be rebuilding mine...as in your case I think mine is a problem with the float not shutting off the fuel flow so it overflows from the body gasket...thanks for showing how you solved that...I know it's been over a year ago since you did these videos...how's your tractor running now...enjoy the upcoming holidays!

      It's not too bad other than removing the front end to get the alternator on. It is very time consuming though because I keep needing to run to town or order parts. It will be very nice once it's running reliably though!

      Yeah these guys change too many things out... I leave all my stuff stock (6 Volt, Generator, Filters, etc.) when you start fiddling and changing stuff its a nightmare. If I see a old tractor with a alternator I run!

    Basically, this tractor will be our 'Pasture Tractor'. It will pull the brush hog (when we get one), spread fertilizer, and spray weed killer in our three pastures. I am trying to make the tractor as reliable as possible -- I want it to start and run every time -- so I am putting a few dollars and some time to get it to that point. It has new oil, hydraulic fluid, plugs, a 12-volt conversion, new plug wires, distributor cap, electronic ignition, powerful coil, alternator, battery, steering wheel, and an original style seat. It looks as though it will run after I take care of the filthy carburetor, but there seems to always be something else that goes wrong. 😐

    In the end, the fuel line as well as an adapter to it were clogged, and the sediment bowl itself was not correct so I replaced both the sediment bowl and the fuel line. The tractor now runs like a top!

    I have an international 350 utility that I have to go through all this stuff every year.... I typically have to remove the sediment bowl, run some new gas through it to remove the small particles in the tank, mess with the bowl a lot. Man I hate it. Can't not have my tractor though!
    Good luck with everything.

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  3 года назад

      The 350 International is a nice tractor! Do you have a loader for it? That's what I need at some point -- to deal with manure and such 💩 I'm hoping to get to that point where I know I can rely on the systems and just do routine maintenance like that. Soon I hope!

    • @brianbarnes9635

      @@PlanetMojo I do have a loader for it. In fact there's a major tractor collector right across the street from me who said that the loader is a pretty rare one.
      I do like the tractor a lot but will be upgrading to a 3 cylinder Ford industrial in the spring. Hopefully I can then get a chance to go through the international some and fix it back up.

    Double check your firing order, If this is correct, it should made an attempt to start with ether. Might be some manuals online or info. Most 4 cylinder engine firing orders are 1-3-4-2 if my memory services my right, starting from the front (near radiator) back. Zenith carbs are not the hard to rebuild. Very easy, not much to them. I would agree with putting a secondary paper fuel filter on, but keep it away from the exhaust system

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  3 года назад

      Thanks
      51ubetcha! It starts with starting fluid (tomorrow's video) so I'm thinking it's the carburetor. The carb stinks to high-heaven like shellac so my guess is that it's all gummed up inside. The guy I bought it from let it go to hell. The carburetor is a Marvel-Schebler -- TSX312 I believe. It's missing it's tag or never had one.
      I debated whether to just clean the carb or rebuild it, but as long as it's off the tractor I should just do the rebuild. I ordered the kit and hope to get that done as soon as it gets here. I did find out that the screen at the fuel intake to the carburetor is missing -- there are three screens altogether -- so an in-line filter seems to be the answer to all of that mess 😊

      Hi Americo, surprisingly, you can get just about any part for these old tractors -- even the tin. I'm hoping a carburetor rebuild does the trick -- I believe it will. From there, hopefully it's just maintenance 😉

    When you say Ferguson are you talking massey Ferguson, as you say they originated from Canada then moved to Coventry England, then they moved back to Canada and taken over by another company.

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  3 года назад +1

      I was thinking about that as I was watching the video and believe I was incorrect. I know Harry Ferguson had his own factory in America (Detroit I believe) after splitting with Ford and made the TO tractors himself for awhile. He made the TE tractors in England as well. I believe it was a couple of years after my tractor was made (1951) that Ferguson settled the lawsuit with Ford and merged with Massy-Harris to create Massy-Harris-Ferguson. I'll refresh my memory later when I get to the shed -- it's been a couple of years and I may be a bit foggy on the details 😉
