  • I bought this unique looking David Brown forward-control tractor a few months ago, it was advertised as not running so I expected it would be only good for parts. I got it running in the previous video - • Salvaging an Abandoned... .. this time I'll give it a full service and take it for a long drive to see if any problems show up...

Father and son together, with the father imparting his knowledge onto the next generation. What a wonderful thing to behold.
The tractor is an odd looking beast, but it sounds absolutely fantastic and very innovative. It was fascinating to hear about its history and how ahead of its time it was. I couldn't help but feel that the body deserved a full restoration as this is clearly a part of New Zealand mechanical and agricultural history.

You can use a mechanic's scissors (ball pein hammer) and tap the hammer on the gasket lightly along the edges, and it will cut the gasket without damaging the surfaces. The ball end is useful for bolt holes, etc.

English Bull Terrier?!! I was lucky enough to spend 15 years of my life with mine years and years ago. He was the funniest dog I ever had. I still think about old Teddy at least once a week. One time he ripped open a beanbag chair. They were full of little Styrofoam balls, and when I came home his eyes were covered with them and I'm sure he thought he'd gone blind. I brushed them off in two seconds and you'd never seen such a happy dog! He destroyed everything. I'm pretty sure you and your family are going to have a lot of laughs, hopefully for a long time.

I wonder if the closed cab was to minimise the driver's exposure to the sprays. They used some nasty stuff back then. DDT and Organophosphate. There are grape vines all around where I live, and we try to stay inside when they are spraying.

For general everyday tasks like towing lifting and shifting the old David Browns just worked, they were no fuss no mess, simple and reliable runarounds which were incredibly simple to work on and well designed, almost all the newer tractors like Massey Ferguson and Case were compared to them and almost always found to be lacking in some way.

He started me out cleaning and gapping spark plugs at about age 8, and changing tires at 9. The best thing, though, was the vulcanizing patches he used to mend inner tubes...a major treat. My sisters were younger and not quite as interested, but we were all expected to fix our own flats, check the oil and water, and be able to tell a mechanic what was wrong. Just saying. A nice machine, if a trifle eccentric looking, and good luck with it.

Love these videos, great to see old equipment revived! Last bit of service on the old tractor is nuggeting the tyres.

Emulsified oil like that I usually put In a steel or aluminium pot ( 40L) one and sit it on a frame over a fire and boil the water out of it at about 130°c,
    Quickest way of resurrecting it
