Magpie is name of the bird that loves shiny things - which is reference to him being a bandit and not a swordsmen.

I just saw it was a bird... That makes sense!

Thanks for the summary. This would've flown under my radar, if it weren't for this video. I suspect this would get subsume by all of the other decent anime coming out this season. I do agree, having a rough start for anime can be a deal breaker for many people. Whereas for me, I rather have a bad start than a bad ending for anime, like Wonder Egg priority etc.

Yeah that's another thing I didn't mention, there's too many good anime coming out right now so it's easy for Ishura to slip by...

    But the opening is great?

I would disagree that first episode is not good. While Willow Sword indeed seems pretty generic battle crazy jerk at this point (which is intentional) - main focus here is Yuno (one of the girls) PoV - she is mediocre she likes her friend but also jealous of her talent she indecisive she loses her cool when sh*t hits the fan, she trying to push the blame and vent her anger on others.
She's very much imperfect which making her perfect to represent normal people in the world where demigods going around and killing thousands without any particular reason. It's a perfect setup to build the bridge between two of those worlds over time.
The gore here is to show her shock when her world was turned inside out.

I get what they were trying to do, but I still think they should have switched the order around for a more compelling first episode. I thought Yuno's interaction with Dakai was much more entertaining, so maybe it's just my dislike of Soujiro (at this point in the story).

@@OverlordDio I ended up checking out the novels (all 5 that is translated as of now) Soujiro is not supposed to be likable at all (at least at this point) PoV is purely from Youno perspective she sees him as outsider cold and unfathomable with descriptions like "face of a snake". Anime adapts the first book to the letter (some dialogs and inner monologs are condensed for the runtime sake but order of events is the same).
Regarding novels I enjoyed them and will follow the series - every character have backstory, personality, personal goals and driving force. There is a mix of political maneuvers and explosive high packed action that often throws curveballs so you never sure who will win in the end. That being said because there is so many characters and moving parts it's a slow burn. The first 2 books are setup for the main event and introduction for the main players. There is no singular main character so sometimes you could have an entire book without some of them even being mentioned. So people with low attention span might struggle..
Overall it's pretty high quality product in terms of world exploration (mystery of hero and demon lord), political intrigue, action and character development. But pacing is certainly not everyone's cup of tea.
P.S. Also the second names like "Distant Talon", "Willow sword" e.t.c. really helps the series as a whole they both give characters some brief description and allow to easier keep track on so many names without mixing them up.

@@vicantirasumovski4375 Two volumes for the setup? That's a LOT of world building 😅
The more I watch Ishura the more it's growing on me, I don't think I'll get into the novels for now, but I hope it gets a second season.

I don’t really understand any of your criticism to be honest. The first episode is nothing like horror. Soujirou is a walking tripe but I liked that about him because of his impact on the world and the perspective we get of that type of character from a regular person of the world. I think the biggest hurdle for the show was remembering the geopolitics and who belongs to which side when watching this on the weekly release schedule. Gonna have to heavily disagree with you on the animation. This is so far above middle of the road. The only shortcomings there was the sound slicer and wyverns. No different from AoT which is often praised for its animation. Pretty annoying how wishy-washy people are with gore. Mostly seems like mental gymnastics to justify it sometimes and then not others. There really was nothing that crazy in that department so you kind of do it a disservice acting like it’s that edgy

The anime makes a very clear effort to present the robots in a horrifying way (e.g., the dismembering was plain unnecessary). Personally I don't mind gore, I've seen anime worse than Ishura, but the first episode felt overly forced. To me it needed a bigger story telling focus to make me care about these characters instead of just doing bad things to them so quickly. So my nitpick is not with the gore itself, but with its execution if that makes sense.

@@OverlordDioyeah, I got what you meant but I don’t think it needs that kind of story justification. If it went that way I could see people complaining that they built it up just to have that shock factor. I only have a problem with it when it’s like Goblin Slayer, not because it’s problematic, but because it’s only to get attention and then the rest of the story is mostly wholesome or pg-13 instead of staying that dark. I guess what I’m trying to say is that it can just exist or happen without any kind of story or emotional reason. Not trying to say that it’s also not effective when it does have those reasons though. Sorry if I’m not being very clear. I think a lot of it comes down to sensibilities and I’m just not a fan of pg-13 violence when it comes to serious events or cameras cutting away all the time like the norm.
PS: I am a native English speaker and the extra titles still were confusing to me though I thought they were hilarious and badass at the same time.

@@ExpertContrarian Yes, they were definitely a mix of badass, funny and confusing. I'm still trying to figure out why Higuare was "the Pelagic" (maybe because he has a sea of arms? No idea)
