I really enjoyed cat Beast. Cassandra Nova really played with the idea that he's becoming less human, and it really ties into Morrison's idea of secondary mutation. There's this incredibly sad part in New X-Men where he realizes he can't play guitar anymore, and it's just heartbreaking.
Honestly, the Skrulls' fundamentalist religious turn is one of the most interesting character traits in recent Marvel comics stories. As a motivator, it's so strange and unexpected. The story is all too brief, but I love that element. I mean, he loves you.
You know, with five years of retrospect, Sal really bangs the "Skrulls have culture and history and are basically people too" drum. I'm starting to suspect that he's laying the empathy groundwork for the real Skrull invasion (forthcoming). Trade number since I started watching Back Issues: 4
Norman Osborn was only able to kill the Skrull queen because he stole the info on how to kill her from Nick Fury. It takes place during the Deadpool tie ins where Nick Fury hired Deadpool to get the info and Deadpool had to take on a Skrull ship by himself. It was a pretty good tie in, it was really funny.
I freaking love that run and how Deadpool is introduced disguised as a baseball team mascot and the skrulls try to make skrull Deadpool and it fails because he's too bat-shit insane
So, I watched every back issues you realeased in a week. Then I rewatched a bunch and felt bored. MAGICALLY I stumble upon this one, which I've never seen!!! YES!!!
I gotta say it's kinda crazy how your views have grown exponentially for all of your videos in the one or two months since I started watching these. Great work!
I honestly thought that Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes cartoon did a much better job of telling this story. It seemed a little more cohesive, and we actually got to see the final fight rather than it being told to us through disjointed flashbacks. I've always had a problem with Bendis. He has great story ideas, but he never seems to completely deliver and his characterisation is always off. You either have the badass, the whiner or the stoic character, that and his continuity is always a little shoddy.
@@brandonbaerga4972 I don’t think there were thousands of heroes and villains, but to be honest I meant the final issue just jumps to the end of the battle and then the climax is told in flashbacks. We don’t actually see it play out. It’s why I like the EMH version, in that Iron Man appears with his Skrull detection beam (for lack of a better term) and then he and Cap are joined by the long awaited return of Thor. Then we actually see them take the Skrulls down. I just felt that version had much better build up and pay off. But that’s just my opinion.
I'm starting to read his new avengers and in the first story arc, in the breakout part, when you got an A team on the top and a B one in the bottom, I was very curious to see how the fight would play out. Would captain america come up with a plan and make it work? Would they just each one do their thing until the team is organically working out? Actually, it just leaps a day and cap and Iron Man are like "man, what a busy day was it yesterday, right?".
It was the best part of this whole event. The Skrulls never even stood a chance against the X-Men, it was a massacre! Then you find out in a moment taken straight from Batman, that Cyclops some time in the past came up with a plan to deal with this very occasion. Despite all that, they stay in SF and don't get involved at all because let's be honest here, $$$movie rights$$$, so fuck the X-Men. It almost seemed like the X-Men writers at the time were trying to convey how stupid and shitty the Skrulls were as a serious threat to earth. While at the same trying to show how dumb Marvel was being for shoving these amazingly effective characters off in a corner, and not really involving them in anything in the wider Marvel universe.
Space Owlien The years around that tie-in were my favorite years on the X-Men. They're my favorite team but I've barely been able to read it since Avengers VS X-Men.
Caitlin Brewer did you ever notice that whenever a writer on an X book would start writing a really good story that would get some recognition, Marvel would immediately move that writer to an Avengers book
Space Owlien Yeah, well usually in these VS books they try and make it even, but it was clear that the writers were trying to make the Avengers out to be the good guys. The only problem is that they come off as such jackasses that everyone I've talked to ended up siding with the X-Men! Even Reed Richards thinks they're being unreasonable, and you know things have gone Topsy-Tervy when Mr. Fantastic is the reasonable one!
Don't know how I found this, but I'm watching you guys from Australia and it's thoroughly enjoyable good sirs! Can't wait for the cosmic stuff and Annihilation Wars to get covered!
I LOVE you're Back Issues series and wanted to thank you guys for doing such a cool in depth analysis. Really enjoy the laid-back friendly atmosphere you three have created. Do you think you'll ever do a Back Issues on Marvel's Siege? Would be ecstatic to hear what you thought of it, guys!
Blast from the past. Been subscribed since like 2015. Just watched your latest and jumped back to this one. You guys are fantastic and have been for years.
I laughed a lot when Sal mentioned the difference between Norman Osborn and Lex Luthor . Sal: But Lex didn't dress up in a Goblin costume and drop a Blonde teenager off a bridge! lol 😂
Just finished watching all Back issues episodes, some I've watched twice. You guys are great & I hope you don't slow down or stop like most of my favorite reviewers do after I discover them. I'm a 80's baby so most of my comic reading started in the late 80's, early 90's. Could you guys Back issue Peter David's run on the Hulk or any monumental run of iconic characters. Not just a good story arc but a long successful run.
Well, Hickman is still using Eden Fesi(Manifold) in Avengers, and Nick Spencer has been using Manifold, Sebastian Druid, and Gorgon in Avengers World. I think Gorgon also recently had an arc in Iron Man or something, but I don't read Iron Man's solo title, so I may have the book wrong. Secret Warriors is some of the best Fury I've ever read. His final confrontation with Strucker is one of the most badass things I've seen in comics.
I've just started watching these things and whoops... they're all done :( I'd love to see you guys live! Any chance you'll be doing anything in the UK?
The best thing about Secret Invasion and the Dark Reign is that it's proof what happens when Steve Rogers isn't in the MU. Now Steve is out and Tony is a bad again...
Are you guys planning to do through all the rest of the Marvel events up to whats currently going on with Original Sin? Cause hearing about all these huge events that happened is really enjoyable to watch. And keep up the good work!
TVLittleHouse wait if Civil War is going to be the main title for Captain America 3 that will then lead to the Secret Invasion story possibly for Avengers 4 since Avengers: Infinity War part 1 & 2 will be in 2 parts and this is all connected (: lol also I'm getting Secret Invasion for Christmas as my present (:
Another blast from the past. I've watched this episode multiple times but just read Secret Invasion for the first time today, and let me tell you that it was a dud: 8 issues for a story that only had gas in the tank for maybe 3; the concept as a whole could have warranted 8 issues if it had been played well, to its full extent, exploring the ramifications of having whole governments and organisations compromised, but it seemed to me as if Bendis just wanted to get done with it as soon as it started and cash a fat paycheck; oh and the dialogue was annoying. It was sad, because Bendis can truly write both compelling stories and catchy dialogue when he wants it. As a positive, I'll rewatch the episode now to see if I have another perspective on it
I think not taking that copout and undoing a bunch of characters is for the better. It would be so easy to undo a character like Ant Man to wash over history, but it's more interesting to not do that and actually write those changes. Kind of like show, don't tell. If you're going to undo something that happened in the past, it would be better to actually make that a story than just shrug and say "oh, they were a skrull the whole time."
i have a question. you have seemed to read a lot of bendis's big stories, are there any that are good from a writing perspective? do you find his smaller stories (about a few characters) more enjoyable?
We tells a better longer, sprawling story. Like Ultimate Spider-Man (which is basically one long, unending story), or New Avengers. Alias might be his greatest Marvel success.
the stupidest part of this is its supposed to be a "great concept" that they took the characters from the 70s and we "dont know how the characters who were in all those old stories could have been skrulls" but if you're not stupid you can figure out that this event was not planned for more than a decade so its not "smart", sadly everyones stupid and says this anyway. I dont understand why people are so happy about this anyway since its both a dumb possible retcon and kinda ruins older stories
Hey Sal, you said it goes like Avengers Disassembled, House of M, Civil War then Secret Invasion. Do I need to know/read something else if I want to read them (A. Disassembled to Secret Invasion)? Love the show BTW :D
Oh...ok. That was fast learning Marvel, I like that ^^'. I'm trying to get into Marvel but it's kinda complicated. Thanks for the answer and keep it up you're all doing great ;D
If they had tried a coexistence type story, where some members of the scroll race see through Queens religious ruse try to help the superheroes Stop The Invasion, this might have been a bit better. Also it's not the world outside my window when they supposed hero eats their surrendered victim
SI was a fun read but the Skrulls should of won or at least have some marvel casualties. 1) A so called advance race with an Armada would be a challenge for earth. 2) Take into account every Skrull is stronger then capt America and can shape shift an army of that alone would be a challenge. 3) Are they not suppose to be warriors even a competent army that out numbers the super heroes would get a few shoots off I thinks only the wasp was taken out and she came back. 4) plus the super Skrulls had more powers then the Earth heroes. With all that you get a death toll of a billion Skrulls to one earth hero. Everything until the end of this book was good. SI alone should make the skrulls a non threat in the cosmos
I feel validated knowing it wasn’t just me who thought Secret Invasion was just meh. I was a little let down when I finally read it because I had heard it was such a good & important Marvel comic, but just okay with some cool ideas. Though some of it bothered me because how long have some of them been skrulls? Was Spider-Woman a skrull during the whole New Avengers arc? Did it happen before or after Civil War?
Just my feelings. The story felt rushed and not very well thought out. I guess that Bendis really needed a quick and big paycheck so he did a mediocre job on it
genghis khan and the roman empire...as a professional historian, I must say I am mortified by your perception of history :). but don't worry, we still love ya :)
In other news. I absolutely love your videos guys. Great way to pass the time whilst "working" but love your take on some of these stories, and when you sit around and play video games for 4 and a half hours. lol, Keep bringing the good stuff!
"And Tony Stark who's just a the smartest guy on Earth. It's not like he got injected with Nazi steroids or anything. He's just like a genius who earned it. Snore."
"My God has a hammer" that's a good fucking punchline
I really enjoyed cat Beast. Cassandra Nova really played with the idea that he's becoming less human, and it really ties into Morrison's idea of secondary mutation. There's this incredibly sad part in New X-Men where he realizes he can't play guitar anymore, and it's just heartbreaking.
Then he gets his ass beat by effin' Beak.
BEAK!
I have always liked Beak, but under Nova's control or not, no one should lose a fight to Beak.

4:56 6 years, 7 months and 2 days later... Annihilation is finally on Back Issues to end off a terrible year called 2020! 😂👍

he stole Wolverine time to be the hero in the story ..

Awesome! Thanks, Allen!
Black Panther's secret invasion was so bad ass. H e took all the skulls out with mad strategy
26:38
Shut up bad guy. Your a bad guy!!!!
Thank you Ethan!!!! You always make back issues better.
I'm a Skrull and I'm in a Back Issues marathon.
I love Secret Invasion! I think it was my favorite Summer Crossover of the Bendis run of Avengers.
It wasnt Wolverine who stabbed Electra, it was Echo.

Can....you guys do a dark reign episode?
Wait the Puppet Master’s last name is... Masters? I love comics
Wait till you find out Taskmaster's last name.
🤣🤣

Back Issues has become such an addictive pass time... Thanks again guys.

I raised my Hand for the elektra movie.
I don't know what it is, but I don't think a recap of a DC event would be the same. Also, please do something like Ultimatum.
wow they really have it against Elektra
The best thing about Secret Invasion and the Dark Reign is that it's proof what happens when Steve Rogers isn't in the MU. Now Steve is out and Tony is a bad again...
That green goblin fox news joke hits a bit closer to home now.
I saw the Elektra film I still have it on DVD
Can you guys talk about "The Dark Reign?" I know you talked about "Siege" which ended it.
The thing that always left me feeling uncomfortable was how Spiderwoman/Skrull Queen killed Echo, and nobody gave a shit, or asked about it again.
Are you guys planning to do through all the rest of the Marvel events up to whats currently going on with Original Sin? Cause hearing about all these huge events that happened is really enjoyable to watch. And keep up the good work!

Nope, they don't own the rights to the skulls. They're at Fox with FF. So, unless they get the rights to FF, they're not allowed to use them.

Is more attila and the Huns, than Genghis Khan and the Mongols, but thats fine.
When are you guys going to do World War Hulk?! Or WWH and Planet Hulk combo?
I think we could get two episodes out of Planet Hulk / World War Hulk!
So did this do anything else but set up dark reign

He loves you.
Secret invasion YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Hey now I saw elektra and own it lol.
After secret invasion, does Steve Rogers stay dead or does he come back to "life" in later comics? Thanks
thank you.
My god has a Hammer🔨WACK
Where is Ghost Rider?
genghis khan and the roman empire...as a professional historian, I must say I am mortified by your perception of history :). but don't worry, we still love ya :)

Ehsan Jalili Thanks bud!
I don't think that criticism of Bucky as cap is fair. He's not Steve, he shouldn't act like Steve. He's a new character taking up a familiar mantel
