It’s the culture here for sure. We are expected to sacrifice our families and friends for the sake of work and money. We are expected to constantly increase our earnings along with the skyrocketing prices and cost of living.
We are taken away from our loved ones in order to keep a roof over our heads. We can’t just find somewhere to settle down because if a private entity doesn’t own the land, the government does. So you have to pay for that land.
It’s a vicious cycle. By the time we reach a point where we don’t have to work ourselves to death, we are elderly. Our relationships are weak and our strength is waning.
We are well into our 60s when we can retire and try to make up for all that lost time, but it’s an illusion. We can’t make up for it. We have to keep at it. Not to mention the only way to have a functional retirement is to trust your money to people who gamble it away, or can just lose it all.
It’s bad. It’s becoming more and more obvious how horrible it is and how stuck we are that mental illness is our norm. We need more time with family, less time worrying about if we are going to be screwed over for not having more and more money.

First and foremost I was struck by this young woman's beauty!!! She radiated a humility and gentleness that took my breath away. It's actually not something one would encounter here in my country - Australia. Everything she said is true of Australia and more so. It is a very secular society and most churches where I live are small congregations of elderly folk. The way we are raised is in direct opposition to what this lovely sister shared. Parents are glad to have there children leave home and encouragement of independence is paramount. All but one of my children live thousands of kms away. My elderly father who lives nearby is estranged from me. Our Western culture is broken and fosters individuality at the expense of nurturing relationships. So so tragic.

This is so refreshing to hear! I'm a Norwegian teacher student, and I am going to teach English as a second language. A lot of the stuff we went through at the university was about pragmatism and various cultures, and how we tend to stereotype places we know very little about.
One thing that struck me was a Ted Talk we saw of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, where she talked about the danger of defining a group of people around the few stories we've heard.
The best we can do is to be aware of our tendencirs and do our best to be open-minded and show willingness to learn.
I am having my first trip to Africa (but can't say where since I'm travelling through Open Doors) for my first time in summer! Looking forward just absorb and learn how they live their lives there.
Bless you for sharing your heart the way you do!

Yes, same in my family and is tradition in a lot of Black southern families. My great grandparents both passed in their home, yrs apart, same bed. Behind their home (my family home of which we, outta town family use when we visit) there's our family cemetery. My great grandma inherited from her mother's side. This land has been in my family since the middle 1800's. And there buried, are my great, great, great, grandparents. My great grandma Thereasa(born 1923), great grandfather Johnnie(born 1918), my mother's mother, my mothers brother, and many great aunt and uncle's are all buried there. I too when my time comes, will go lay beside my ancestors. We do not throw our elders away. They've face so much on this land, it's only right that we take care of them until God calls them home.

Everything you said are great points! Our elders often don’t want us after a certain age, expect us to find our own money for education, and refuse to let us care for them in their old age. Not everyone is like this of course, but has been my experience. I did help take care of a couple of elders and they were quite resistant to us helping. I did have depression once because after my parents died when I was 14 I was expected to carry on like nothing happened and no community support. I’m very glad you have your community. It is a beautiful thing. ❤

I was American when I was a child, like in my picture. I was forced to go to my grandparents in Germany in 1978. Germany was for me like middle age when I arrived here. I was indoctrinated by the american school system before. I believed America is the greatest country of the world. I was shocked about America after finding out more and more truths of how America exploits all other nations, after seeing the truth from a distance. I still love the beauty of the continent America, even the deserts there are fascinating. But the rich which owns the media and who literally rule over everything, they destroyed the society there. And Germany is next - we already lost too many traditional virtues in oder to get closer to what we consider as modern (american) life

I live in USA and people here embrace grief, joy, hardship of others and support them through all in hundreds of ways. I've experienced community love and have given it throughout my life here. Just because you visited some big city for a few days don't delude yourself that you know a thing about USA or its incredibly diverse people. People where you come from dont suffer depression and anxiety because your way or life is simple and limited, therefore safe and predictable. The unlimited, unbound, complex adventure that is America is incredible, it's exhilarating and intense, but also can be too overwhelming, scary, burdensome to some.

Like the example that Joy shared of Americans paying money at the hospital merely to get a diagnosis...here all I do is show my health care card and ID at a hospital or simply book an appointment at my doctor’s office. I pay the fees through my taxes, not upfront - e.g. I don’t have to pay to have a baby! Therapists, dentists, optometry, and orthodontics we do have to pay for, though, as those aren’t covered. And they’re quite expensive

I do wish we had better community here. I belong to a wonderful church, but even still there seems to be no way to escape the rugged individualism of the country's culture. I have been a nurse and seen old people die filthy and alone in nursing homes. I hope to care for my own aging loved ones in my home when they need it, but even they are so individual-minded that it will be hard to convince them that they need that help! They want to be in a retirement home in their own tiny apartment!

Thank you for your viewpoints. I enjoy watching your videos and learning about your culture. Yes, the culture here in the United States is very different in all the ways you described, except one thing, the part about churches. That may be true about the particular area you visited, but it is not true for the entire country. Where I live, there are so many different churches, mosques and temples to choose from of different religions that I can walk to. Where some family members of mine live, in another town, they have churches on almost every block and some blocks have more than one church. We even have a huge region of the country that is called, “the Bible Belt”. There are churches everywhere there. You would not have to travel 45 minutes to get to a church unless you live in a rural area. So it all depends on where you are. I think most areas in the country has an abundance of churches, mosques and temples.

Being from the United States, what shocks me most about my nation is the way the people are thrown away, out into the void, having to fend for themselves. No roof over one's head, no way to keep warm from the cold, or cool from the hot sun. Needing to eat from what is leftover in the trash. How can one's societal constructs allow this to happen? I am 74 and when I was a child I saw very little of this sort of thing. Now, it is mostly everywhere. What also shocks me is the way so many people believe these poor homeless people deserve all they get! They are indoctrinated through corporate owned media to think in this way.

Of course you should share what shocked you in the US or anywhere you go. Shit an American can experience cultural shock by going from one city to the next or one state to the next.
I think it can be helpful. It can teach people about which things they do is actually ridiculous and it can make people happy or proud of the way they do things. It can also make people see that there are other ways of doing things. A "walk a mile (km) in another person's shoes" kind of thing.
Maybe the ridiculous things can be changed and made better. It's always good to educate people, and to try not offending them and their way of life. Otherwise, it becomes much more difficult to teach someone. It can also make that person to never want to try anything new.
Most people that ask questions aren't trying to be rude (yes, some people are just rude) or doesn't recognize they sound rude. They ask because they want to learn, they want to know better.
Online, it can be hard to know how old someone is. It can be a little kid asking a question or someone that has never learned any different. Kindness and patience goes a long way in teaching others. Also, it's good to remember that making comments, texts, etc making communicating emotions, sarcasm, genuine curiosity, rudeness etc. Body language, facial expressions, voice tone and volume, etc all play a huge role in communication and all but the words are lost when texting or commenting online.

Okay, I don't know how you managed to find a spot in America that there wasn't a church for 45 minutes by train. Where did you go? The badlands of North Dakota? The Alaskan wilderness? Because I've lived and traveled all over and there are churches, synagogues, temples, etc everywhere! If you are in almost any (even small) community, there's a church every few blocks!

White people are raised to be kicked out the door at 18 and this traumatized me for the rest of my life. I was never the same. I could not understand how they could expect me to thrive when they kicked me out with nothing. And I still adored my mother after she did that to me. It was not until I had my own child that I saw the cruelty. Shame on that woman. I was not protected. I was not valued and I struggled to survive while they lived comfortably.

Life expectancy in Western Africa is only 57 years compared to 79 years in the United States, so naturally there are going to be nursing homes. Only 1.5 million Americans are in nursing homes out of a population of 340 million. Try caring for someone with dementia and you have to work. Impossible.

She actually pointed out all things that I wish will change in America. And depending where you are, things are going to be more difficult or easier depending on where u go. Like in Utah so many buy what they don’t need all the time and get into so much debt, like when I moved away from Utah their was a very young couple with their new baby looking at our house to buy, my house was huge with many rooms and I thought it was crazy of them to be wanting a house that is way too big for them, it was too big for us and we had a big family plus the house was expensive. In Utah ppl are a lot more anti-social or are very clicky. But being in northern Maine the ppl are very connected everyone knows eachother and love talking and meeting new ppl.

I wish we had the same sense of community you do. Our neighborhood is pretty close knit, but the rest of our city isn’t. Our church is though. We have churches on most streets here. I’m agoraphobic so my anxiety needs community lol. Also, your voice is relaxing and I love listening to you talk about Africa 🥰 I hope you educate us more. I love hearing about it!

I very much appreciate your vlog. There is a very sad break down of family here and so many are not regarding God and church to be necessary in their lives. It has caused a lot of trouble here. I like your way of life there with family being close and helping one another. You are doing the right thing. I am a christian and because of my crippled legs, I cannot go to church. I do watch it on the computer though so that helps. I miss being with my church family.

It seems that in Africa there is no stress or depression... What about the people who cross almost all of Africa to reach the Mediterranean and die in a boat? Do you think they do not suffer from stress or depression? Do you want to say something about homosexuality in Africa? What do you think of marrying a 60-year-old man to a young girl? That is normal in several African countries. What do you say about female circumcision in Africa? Do you really think that stress or depression only exist in Europe or countries like the USA? Ask those young men or those girls...

  • @dulamaya

I love how you point out the insanity of the West and the good aspects of African cultures. A lot more people need to hear this. I live in South America and when I am confronted with Europeans (I am European myself but left Europe decades ago) it is so depressing to see for them its all about rationality, materialistic and very intolerant mentality. They still seem to believe they are entitled to tell everyone else what education is, what a good way of life is...and they deny the existence of God. So much inner emptiness.
The humility and gentleness you show can still be found around here too. People take care of each other, smile at each other. They love their parents. They live community life. This is a good life no doubt.
Let's keep up the good traditions while we are lucky to still have them!
