She is speaking the truth regarding such sky high rates of anxiety and depression in the West. It is striking.
To much emphasis on the Kardashians here
It’s the culture here for sure. We are expected to sacrifice our families and friends for the sake of work and money. We are expected to constantly increase our earnings along with the skyrocketing prices and cost of living.
We are taken away from our loved ones in order to keep a roof over our heads. We can’t just find somewhere to settle down because if a private entity doesn’t own the land, the government does. So you have to pay for that land.
It’s a vicious cycle. By the time we reach a point where we don’t have to work ourselves to death, we are elderly. Our relationships are weak and our strength is waning.
We are well into our 60s when we can retire and try to make up for all that lost time, but it’s an illusion. We can’t make up for it. We have to keep at it. Not to mention the only way to have a functional retirement is to trust your money to people who gamble it away, or can just lose it all.
It’s bad. It’s becoming more and more obvious how horrible it is and how stuck we are that mental illness is our norm. We need more time with family, less time worrying about if we are going to be screwed over for not having more and more money.
It's expensive as f*** here. Everyone is focused on money.
Gut health affects mental health in a big way. All the processed food is so bad.
First and foremost I was struck by this young woman's beauty!!! She radiated a humility and gentleness that took my breath away. It's actually not something one would encounter here in my country - Australia. Everything she said is true of Australia and more so. It is a very secular society and most churches where I live are small congregations of elderly folk. The way we are raised is in direct opposition to what this lovely sister shared. Parents are glad to have there children leave home and encouragement of independence is paramount. All but one of my children live thousands of kms away. My elderly father who lives nearby is estranged from me. Our Western culture is broken and fosters individuality at the expense of nurturing relationships. So so tragic.
Thank you so much for sharing ❤
You are so right! I grew up in a family that encouraged the community that comes through family and faith, but that was somewhat at the expense of developing one’s own beliefs and personality. They still love and will help me out, but it is so complicated too
It's no wonder why people feel so lonely here in the USA...
Girl come to the south, we have churches at literally every street we love Jesus here😅
She is beautiful 🌹🌹. I agree
Man I would love to live in a community based society. I had premature twins 7 years ago. They were very ill and in the NICU for a while. They’re 7 and healthy now. But when they were newborns, I had no help. Nothing. I don’t even remember most of their first year of life it was so stressful and we had no help.
Just come to Africa...It is everyone's business to see that one's quality of life is gd
No help in the US is very accurate. If I wanted to get 3 hours of help I have to drive 45 minutes to my parents house and then back. Not worth it.
In another video blogger's video a guy from the US told an African guy that sometimes you won't ever know or speak to your next door neighbor. African guys ponders that then responds that that was a very strange way of life 😅
@@curtisthomas2670 Very true!
They would probably sit us in a corner for a week, first so we could observe.
This is so refreshing to hear! I'm a Norwegian teacher student, and I am going to teach English as a second language. A lot of the stuff we went through at the university was about pragmatism and various cultures, and how we tend to stereotype places we know very little about.
One thing that struck me was a Ted Talk we saw of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, where she talked about the danger of defining a group of people around the few stories we've heard.
The best we can do is to be aware of our tendencirs and do our best to be open-minded and show willingness to learn.
I am having my first trip to Africa (but can't say where since I'm travelling through Open Doors) for my first time in summer! Looking forward just absorb and learn how they live their lives there.
Bless you for sharing your heart the way you do!
This is so beautiful. I pray that you have a great time in your travels.
Caring for our elders in home is a practice in my family. My grandparents never stepped a toenail into a retirement home. We cared for them as a family until the last breath. I remember them both and my children were there through the entire life experience, too.
This is so beautiful 🥹
I'm British Indian and my 94 year old father died at home, at peace, while my 85 year old mother is still living in that home with either my brother or myself taking time to go and support her. It's just the way things are done in various cultures around the world, even many in the West.
That is really shocking in Usa. So many people doesnt know at least one of their parents or they are never knew them or didnt visit them for years and stuff like that. As european this is crazy when u see it in the movies, but it get confirmed by any kind in videos here. Expecially for drug addicts, all is connected,u cant bealive has such a reality that people doesnt comunicate even on the phone with their parents or dont know nothing for them, they are grown up while one is been in the prison and the other with drug or alcohol problem?
Yes, same in my family and is tradition in a lot of Black southern families. My great grandparents both passed in their home, yrs apart, same bed. Behind their home (my family home of which we, outta town family use when we visit) there's our family cemetery. My great grandma inherited from her mother's side. This land has been in my family since the middle 1800's. And there buried, are my great, great, great, grandparents. My great grandma Thereasa(born 1923), great grandfather Johnnie(born 1918), my mother's mother, my mothers brother, and many great aunt and uncle's are all buried there. I too when my time comes, will go lay beside my ancestors. We do not throw our elders away. They've face so much on this land, it's only right that we take care of them until God calls them home.
Everything you said are great points! Our elders often don’t want us after a certain age, expect us to find our own money for education, and refuse to let us care for them in their old age. Not everyone is like this of course, but has been my experience. I did help take care of a couple of elders and they were quite resistant to us helping. I did have depression once because after my parents died when I was 14 I was expected to carry on like nothing happened and no community support. I’m very glad you have your community. It is a beautiful thing. ❤
Tell it sister.🌍 You are truly authentic yet gentle. ♥️
Thank you so much 🙏🏿
When I look at you, I realise the grace I have lost. You belong from a space where you need not be right and others be wrong. This is just beautiful and holds so much power. Its refreshing to see someone inculcate the importance of roots when all others think is reaching the sky.
I was American when I was a child, like in my picture. I was forced to go to my grandparents in Germany in 1978. Germany was for me like middle age when I arrived here. I was indoctrinated by the american school system before. I believed America is the greatest country of the world. I was shocked about America after finding out more and more truths of how America exploits all other nations, after seeing the truth from a distance. I still love the beauty of the continent America, even the deserts there are fascinating. But the rich which owns the media and who literally rule over everything, they destroyed the society there. And Germany is next - we already lost too many traditional virtues in oder to get closer to what we consider as modern (american) life
I like how her skin shines. And she has nice earrings as well. 🙏🏾
Thank you
I find it interesting that you had trouble finding churches where you visited. I guess that really depends on where in the US you are visiting. I am in Pennsylvania, and there are literally dozens of Christian churches within 5 miles, many full of young, engaged families and strong church-based communities.
This is so beautiful to know
I think she is referring to suburban sprawl. Where places are driving distance as opposed to walking distance. If there is a one Christian church in a neighborhood you will not see another one unless of course it belongs to another denomination.
@@deeji6098
Same here in Northern California. 6 churches within a mile radius of my home & more everywhere.
@@Harakan21there are three different churches all next to each other on the same street in my town
I was just about to make a similar comment regarding the church thing. There's ALWAYS churches EVERYWHERE where I am.
As an African who loves traveling. I was quite amazed and alarmed by level of mental illness in the West also Asia. It reminded of how blessed we are. Through it all our Qamata and ancestors are still with us!!!
I am from South East Asia nd we also get amazed at mental illness of western countries spclly America and Europe... So... Mental illness is not that much a problm here as u think.. We r also culturally rich ppl.
I believe The mental illness is a spiritual repercussion, the way I believe there are spiritual reason behind the poverty in Africa... ancestral worship being one of them. When people don't have the light of Jesus in their life it manifests in all sorts of ways, no full blooded human being is exempt. The devil with find some way or the other to insert himself.
Qamata 🙇♀️
The southern parts of USA is much different. You find lots of small towns that are very tight with community help etc. There are also churches everywhere in the southern states.
I really really respect you and love you for being always genuine and saying the exact truth so eloquently. Hundred percent agreed with what you said here.
One of the biggest advertisements in USA growing up has always been individualism and pride which in part is because the mass greed problem America has now causing all the depression and anxiety
You speak so poetically. It's beautiful. What you noticed about depression and anxiety is very true. I do think community is everything to us. A home church is very beneficial. I think a church and church family is something we need and our soul craves. I would love to see what you made with the beads you were stringing! Blessings. ❤️
I live in USA and people here embrace grief, joy, hardship of others and support them through all in hundreds of ways. I've experienced community love and have given it throughout my life here. Just because you visited some big city for a few days don't delude yourself that you know a thing about USA or its incredibly diverse people. People where you come from dont suffer depression and anxiety because your way or life is simple and limited, therefore safe and predictable. The unlimited, unbound, complex adventure that is America is incredible, it's exhilarating and intense, but also can be too overwhelming, scary, burdensome to some.
I cannot begin to say how amazing, refreshing and downright eye opening it is to hear your point of view!
Loads of love from Ireland, Aketch! Keep it up, you legend 👍🏼
I'm very happy to find your channel! What a lovely video. It's interesting to hear about the US from someone else's eyes. I think the community aspect is huge. I wish we had more tightly knit communities here. We do have many churches here in Arizona where I live. My church has a relationship with a Ugandan church and we are visited pretty regularly by the pastor, Apostle Grace. I have many friends involved in the ministry. It's neat to have another connection, even digital, to Uganda. God bless you!
Wow so true! It’s not only in the USA but I think most western countries! Unfortunately not many Africans have the insight that you have that cherishes the African heritage! Unfortunately we do not appreciate what we have until we get exposed and see the shocking differences ourselves! I love The African heritage and I love that I’m Nigerian!
I agree I am so great full for the wisdom of your words God is speaking through you ❤
Life is a learning process and you have learned and is still learning , but I love the fact that you haven't forgotten where you're coming from and you're comfortable with your roots . When dealing with some matters for foreigners you are very calm and very sarcastic 😆 . I'm in Jamaica and I love my rural district ( homestead) but since coming across your videos I wish I was in Uganda with you , or something !!!
I love this lady! I love how blunt and direct she is in her videos, we’re all shocked by the USA.
Yeah I’m Canadian and I was shocked when I first heard how much Americans have to pay for healthcare. Like the example that Joy shared of Americans paying money at the hospital merely to get a diagnosis...here all I do is show my health care card and ID at a hospital or simply book an appointment at my doctor’s office. I pay the fees through my taxes, not upfront - e.g. I don’t have to pay to have a baby! Therapists, dentists, optometry, and orthodontics we do have to pay for, though, as those aren’t covered. And they’re quite expensive
She doesn't say one good thing about the USA. One of the greatest countries in the world and nothing good to say. She talks so much in her videos about being respectful about other people's cultures but apparently she's only talking about being respectful to her own culture.
You must be up north because in the south, there are churches everywhere! There's literally a church on every corner.⛪️
Oh really . That’s really nice . I hv been in New York and it was super hard
Agree! When she said that it shocked me. There’s literally churches everywhere where I’m from as well and I’m from the South.
Sadly, south is also super duper racists
I am absolutely in love with your videos and your channel!!! I love hearing stories from around the world, thank you
Your hair looks so cute like that
Thank u for sharing ❤
What a joy to hear that you are also a Christian! I am from South Carolina and it seems like there is a church on every corner here, unlike how it is in the Northern parts of the country. I had no idea that Uganda had such a strong faith background. That is so encouraging to know!
Christianity is joke.. America indoctrination is making you believe Jesus the Christ is white...which is a total lie!!! So called Christian don't read the Bible. My Beautiful Ugandan Lady do your research the continent of Africa has been and will continue to be colonized by the enemy White people! Peace and Blessings
True, true, true and true. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
So true ❤❤
I love listening to your world view and cultural experiences. It's healing.
I have been enjoying your videos lately, and I can't tell you how glad I am to hear you are a Christian! I am an American, and I find your observations are very insightful. I do wish we had better community here. I belong to a wonderful church, but even still there seems to be no way to escape the rugged individualism of the country's culture. I have been a nurse and seen old people die filthy and alone in nursing homes. I hope to care for my own aging loved ones in my home when they need it, but even they are so individual-minded that it will be hard to convince them that they need that help! They want to be in a retirement home in their own tiny apartment!
May the Lord bless you and keep you, and may he be pleased by the work of your hands and the gentleness of your speech 💜
We paid for the first year of my son’s college payments until we found out he was lying and actually going to the recreation center and playing basketball instead of attending classes. Now he has to pay for his own academic bills. No more!
This makes so much sense . As a first born daughter and being that I help my parents with my siblings tuition . One time one of them got expelled from school it really broke my heart . So I totally relate with you . It’s sad but I pray that he know gets to understand better and cherish his education that is if he wants to study 😅 . Otherwise it doesn’t make sense him spending that much money on something He emotionally isn’t involved . Sending positive vibes your way
The church thing really depends on what part of the US you are in. In the South, there are tons of churches. Some people call it the Bible Belt because that’s how many churches there are
I love hearing people’s perspectives of America
In America, specifically in Detroit Michigan, there is a church in every corner, also, try the south.
Love you so much. This is such truth!
It really depends on where in the United States you are for the churches. We live in the Midwest, and there are 5 churches just in my neighborhood. But yes, Church can be an amazing community, and I wish people would value their spiritual health the same way they value their physical, mental, intellectual and emotional health!
Bless you sister! I miss Africa ...I do love my country but I felt Africa in my bones. I hope to smell that air and feel that ground one more time in my life....Spent my thirties there and I am 60 now.....😕
The US is an individualist country and it shows every time one of us opens our mouths and asks a silly question. You will see community and togetherness, but mostly with First Nations People's.
when i spent two month in the bush of the etosha national Park, i never felt more at home and welcomed in my whole life.
Thank you for your viewpoints. I enjoy watching your videos and learning about your culture. Yes, the culture here in the United States is very different in all the ways you described, except one thing, the part about churches. That may be true about the particular area you visited, but it is not true for the entire country. Where I live, there are so many different churches, mosques and temples to choose from of different religions that I can walk to. Where some family members of mine live, in another town, they have churches on almost every block and some blocks have more than one church. We even have a huge region of the country that is called, “the Bible Belt”. There are churches everywhere there. You would not have to travel 45 minutes to get to a church unless you live in a rural area. So it all depends on where you are. I think most areas in the country has an abundance of churches, mosques and temples.
Please continue to share your videos. People really love learning about your culture. 💖
Yup. This is true
I'm African American and I can tell you dear , you are 💯% right on everything. The problem with America is that they're so full of pride, which is not a problem...to an extent. Once we start meddling in other countrys affairs, trying to tell other countries how to live they're lives and spitting false doctrines about how 'bad' other countries are ,but wanna get offended when other ppl from other countries talk about the USA .... that's a problem ..
The one thing that I agree 100% with is the lack of community and lack of the family unit staying together. This is a huge problem.
I really like this video, its good to hear perspective on my own culture.
This was very insightful! Your voice is very relaxing to hear as well. And yes it is very dependent on the part of the country for church density. God is good!
Love this!❤
Me too!
Yes ❣️
Being from the United States, what shocks me most about my nation is the way the people are thrown away, out into the void, having to fend for themselves. No roof over one's head, no way to keep warm from the cold, or cool from the hot sun. Needing to eat from what is leftover in the trash. How can one's societal constructs allow this to happen? I am 74 and when I was a child I saw very little of this sort of thing. Now, it is mostly everywhere. What also shocks me is the way so many people believe these poor homeless people deserve all they get! They are indoctrinated through corporate owned media to think in this way.
I love your videos thank you so much
Even in South Africa there isn't much of a community. Everything you do, you're on your own. No help. That's not always a bad thing, it ensures you do things properly. They say "Too many cooks spoil the broth" in English.
She radiates a healthy mind. 🌺 Allahumma barik.
I have fallen in love with your African culture and thank you so much for sharing such beautiful insights...❤️ Wish you become my sister, i would love to bond with you. ❤️ You are such a rich soul and such a precious blessing to the world. You beauty comes directly from your soul.
I think churches are regional in the USA. Where I live in Oklahoma we do have churches everywhere. There are 3 at the end of my street! ❤
Thanks for sharing your stories ❤
I'm from the southern US, there are many plentiful churches here in Georgia
Thank you. I am from Brazil and you say so many things I feel Americans should hear. Not only Americans, but Europeans too.
Losing a loved on and having depression are two completely different and unrelated things.
That's the truth.
Thank you for pointing this out
Lol so you missed the whole part where she explains what helps keep depression away? Cuz you went straight to the part she briefly talked about having ppl there for you during death.
Where did she mention they're the say?
i live in the us, and my city has a church pretty much at every corner
Sending love from Slovakia 🇸🇰
African people can offer you to eat with them even they don't know who you are. Is very difficult to find the same offering here in european cultures.
In Australia there are churches everywhere, that doesn’t mean everyone is Christian, it’s a choice yo be Christian yet also there are plenty around
I love you videos ❤ blessings to you! You make me want to move to Uganda
So true about USA - seems the more prosperous we get the further we get from each other ~~
She is so intelligent. You are a wise insightful beautiful woman❤
Beautiful lady....mind soul.. humour vibezzzz... kapppish 🇯🇲🇬🇧💯❤️
Of course you should share what shocked you in the US or anywhere you go. Shit an American can experience cultural shock by going from one city to the next or one state to the next.
I think it can be helpful. It can teach people about which things they do is actually ridiculous and it can make people happy or proud of the way they do things. It can also make people see that there are other ways of doing things. A "walk a mile (km) in another person's shoes" kind of thing.
Maybe the ridiculous things can be changed and made better. It's always good to educate people, and to try not offending them and their way of life. Otherwise, it becomes much more difficult to teach someone. It can also make that person to never want to try anything new.
Most people that ask questions aren't trying to be rude (yes, some people are just rude) or doesn't recognize they sound rude. They ask because they want to learn, they want to know better.
Online, it can be hard to know how old someone is. It can be a little kid asking a question or someone that has never learned any different. Kindness and patience goes a long way in teaching others. Also, it's good to remember that making comments, texts, etc making communicating emotions, sarcasm, genuine curiosity, rudeness etc. Body language, facial expressions, voice tone and volume, etc all play a huge role in communication and all but the words are lost when texting or commenting online.
Yes. We have generally lost our purpose in life. You are very observant of the core issue of our lack of community as well. 🙏
You could write a book lovely Aketch ❤🎉
2:34 Amen, sister 💝💖💐🌷
Okay, I don't know how you managed to find a spot in America that there wasn't a church for 45 minutes by train. Where did you go? The badlands of North Dakota? The Alaskan wilderness? Because I've lived and traveled all over and there are churches, synagogues, temples, etc everywhere! If you are in almost any (even small) community, there's a church every few blocks!
My beautiful everything that you say is FACTS realy FACTS
Thanks for voicing our mind... dear. I am from india. I felt the same! But was not able to share on media or even to people directly
In the southern states of America, there's churches everywhere. Up North its less a part of he culture. You will have at least Baptist and Methodist churches. Everything else you said is SPOT ON!
Come to the south dear. There are more churches per capita than anywhere else in the country. I have 3 on my street alone 😅
White people are raised to be kicked out the door at 18 and this traumatized me for the rest of my life. I was never the same. I could not understand how they could expect me to thrive when they kicked me out with nothing. And I still adored my mother after she did that to me. It was not until I had my own child that I saw the cruelty. Shame on that woman. I was not protected. I was not valued and I struggled to survive while they lived comfortably.
Trust me, many black Americans kick their children to the curb the second they turn 18 as well. It is, sadly, an American thing.
Life expectancy in Western Africa is only 57 years compared to 79 years in the United States, so naturally there are going to be nursing homes. Only 1.5 million Americans are in nursing homes out of a population of 340 million. Try caring for someone with dementia and you have to work. Impossible.
3:04 depends where in the US, some places you can find a church or mission every 10ft and in more city areas they are spread apart
As an islander/American immigrant… I stand with this video lol
You are so beautiful and intelligent, it is a pleasure and a breath of fresh air and it brings hope and peace listening to you, God bless you 🙏
I have heard a theory that in addition to community, people in cultures that strongly integrate dance are able to use that as an outlet to release psychological trauma (not necessarily consciously) that can manifest as anxiety and depression
She actually pointed out all things that I wish will change in America. And depending where you are, things are going to be more difficult or easier depending on where u go. Like in Utah so many buy what they don’t need all the time and get into so much debt, like when I moved away from Utah their was a very young couple with their new baby looking at our house to buy, my house was huge with many rooms and I thought it was crazy of them to be wanting a house that is way too big for them, it was too big for us and we had a big family plus the house was expensive. In Utah ppl are a lot more anti-social or are very clicky. But being in northern Maine the ppl are very connected everyone knows eachother and love talking and meeting new ppl.
I wish we had the same sense of community you do. Our neighborhood is pretty close knit, but the rest of our city isn’t. Our church is though. We have churches on most streets here. I’m agoraphobic so my anxiety needs community lol. Also, your voice is relaxing and I love listening to you talk about Africa 🥰 I hope you educate us more. I love hearing about it!
Truth
This was the video that made me subscribe your chanel. You are very inteligent and smart.
Proud Christian ✝️ yesss girl! I subscribed ❤
I'm glad you pointed out the anxiety and depression issues, we have a whole system built to treat this but we forget that we are a social species living in isolation. The community has degraded since 100y and its showing now through bad mental health.
Beautiful voice
You are beautiful memories from Colombia
❤
Great video. What you said about retirement homes is true in the uk unfortunately as well.
I very much appreciate your vlog. There is a very sad break down of family here and so many are not regarding God and church to be necessary in their lives. It has caused a lot of trouble here. I like your way of life there with family being close and helping one another. You are doing the right thing. I am a christian and because of my crippled legs, I cannot go to church. I do watch it on the computer though so that helps. I miss being with my church family.
I love videos where foreigners share what shocked them while visiting USA. Or tasting our USA foods.
🤭🤭🤭🤭 this is all I could do, Joy you kill me. The African in me is seeing you 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 and going through the comments. As for me I will say nex about nex but girl I like your style, keep doing you👏🏾💃🏾🥂
The church and missionary comment is on point!
I love u aketch
It seems that in Africa there is no stress or depression... What about the people who cross almost all of Africa to reach the Mediterranean and die in a boat? Do you think they do not suffer from stress or depression? Do you want to say something about homosexuality in Africa? What do you think of marrying a 60-year-old man to a young girl? That is normal in several African countries. What do you say about female circumcision in Africa? Do you really think that stress or depression only exist in Europe or countries like the USA? Ask those young men or those girls...
I love how you point out the insanity of the West and the good aspects of African cultures. A lot more people need to hear this. I live in South America and when I am confronted with Europeans (I am European myself but left Europe decades ago) it is so depressing to see for them its all about rationality, materialistic and very intolerant mentality. They still seem to believe they are entitled to tell everyone else what education is, what a good way of life is...and they deny the existence of God. So much inner emptiness.
The humility and gentleness you show can still be found around here too. People take care of each other, smile at each other. They love their parents. They live community life. This is a good life no doubt.
Let's keep up the good traditions while we are lucky to still have them!
You are gracious and lethal...Hello from a creole lady.
