This Large 70Liter capacity UVC box can be used to disinfect groceries, clothes, laptops, tablets or any item that can fit in the box. We also included the materials and cost of the DIY UVC Box.
WHAT THINGS CAN I DISINFECT in my UVC Box?
This is a common question that cross our minds when talking about UVC Disinfection Boxes. Basically, we disinfect all objects that are brought from the outside using a UVC Box to save Lysol spray and Alcohol. Everything except food.
In another video we will be sharing how to disinfect groceries & other items using the boxes featured here.

Thanks for the info & tutorial. I would suggest to put one more light at the bottom of the box, so that the uv light could reach all sides of the item. It only disinfects the surface where uv light could reach. Also use uv light dosimeter cards to make sure if the light is emitting enough dose for disinfection.
This is so helpful and an even better way to easily help house cleaners keep our equipment sterilized after each use. Thank you for all the different ideas and variety of ways to keep everyone safe. 😍

May I ask where did you buy your Small UVC Box with Wireless Charger? Thank you!
You need to choose your battles more wisely
Hi, two questions … (1) Why don’t you use the large grocery UVC box for fresh fruits and vegetables? AND, (2) why don’t you use LED bulbs?
Just a word of caution regarding the aluminum foil polyethylene foam. I got a roll recently from ACE Hardware for my UV-C box and discovered that although the two sides seemed identical, one side was "fake". Only one side was aluminum foil, because the continuity tester of my multimeter registered that it was conducting electrical current (causing my meter to beep). The other side, which was indistinguishable from the foil side, didn't conduct electricity no matter where I tested it. In other words, one side of the foam was aluminum foil, the other was just shiny plastic.
Why is this important? If you dig deeper, aluminum reflects UV-C well, making it ideal for reflecting UV-C. Since aluminum foil PE foam is much sturdier than plain aluminum foil, it's an ideal reflecting surface. However, if you got the same roll as I did you might end up using the side with shiny plastic, which likely won't reflect UV-C. If you want to test if you're using the right surface, you don't need a multimeter to check. If you have batteries, some wire and a bulb (or LED light) you can make a simple continuity tester to see if the reflecting surface you're using is actually aluminum foil. The bulb should light up if it is. I only discovered this after covering the inside of the box with the PE foam, so I had to remove it and do it all over again.
Lastly, don't use reflectorized duct tape for any surface that's designed to diffuse the UV-C light. Remember that for UV-C, just because a surface reflects VISIBLE light, it does NOT means it will reflect UV-C too. This is a common misconception. UV-C has special properties that set it apart from visible light. For example, it won't penetrate a clear pane of glass or acrylic. That's why an ordinary mirror is useless in reflecting UV-C light. The reflective surface (usually aluminum) is coated at the back of a pane of glass. UV-C won't penetrate the glass and won't reach the reflective surface to begin with. Likewise, how sure are you that reflectorized duct tape actually reflects UV-C? Just because it reflects visible light, doesn't mean it will for UV-C. If you need to use tape on the reflective surface then stick with aluminum foil tape. Yes, it's prone to tearing (just be careful with putting things inside the box) but you're sure it will work. Or better yet, just use enough adhesive so that you don't need to use any tape on the reflective surfaces.
Hi! Thanks for sharing. Everything you said is valuable indeed. Will take note of that next time. As to my reflectorized foam, I only bought the one side reflectorized so I do hope this side is really aluminum foil. I tried using the foil tape in previous UVC boxes i made and it did not last a week. After a few days, the tape really did tear even if i used it very carefully. Maybe you can suggest an alternative kind of tape other than just adhesive? Thanks alot for your input. It will help a lot. Stay safe!
@@TrulyTaraph I see, the ACE Hardware I visited (SM Fairview) had only one roll of PE foam in stock and it was dual sided. I strongly advise you to check if the surface of your PE foam is conductive (i.e. metal/aluminum) because if it isn't and it's just shiny plastic then it's likely useless in reflecting UV-C. This is particularly important because you're only using a single UV-C source and need the reflective surfaces to diffuse the UV-C around.
Actually my box is a more advanced design with two 2-foot 20-watt T6 UV-C lamps on both the top and bottom. There's a custom-built wooden frame with a wire mesh between the two sources. The stuff to be sterilized is thus sandwiched between the two lamps and only little shadowing exists (from the wire mesh). I'm not too worried about this though, since the lamps generate a lot of ozone too, which is germicidal. I'm a medical doctor working at a hospital with more than a hundred COVID-19 patients, that's why I'm rather particular on how my sterilizer works. Note that my box is much more powerful compared to what's commercially available or the ones sold in Shopee, and by my irradiation calculations running it for 5 minutes is enough, though I sometimes run it for 15 minutes as overkill. 😁
Regarding alternative tape, the best solution I can think of is turning strips of the aluminum foil PE foam (the real kind!) into tape. You just have to coat the other side with a suitable adhesive (e.g. contact cement) and you have instant tape that you can cut into any width and length. It's durable and won't tear easily compared to aluminum foil tape, although it will still protrude because of the foam's thickness. However, if you are meticulous enough, it's possible to cut the foam precisely so that the panels fit side-by-side with no gap. I suggest making a paper pattern first though, since the curved and tapering sides of the box makes precise fitting of the panels a bit challenging.
Thanks alot for the input. It will help us alot. My husband is also a doctor/ pulmo that is why we are very particular with disifection also. Will share your ideas with my husband so we can make changes. Thanks so much! Stay safe!
@@TrulyTaraph I'll share a video of the box in my channel when the box is finished, I'm reworking the PE panels right now and I still need to install the wire mesh, though the frame is complete. Also, for the tape thing I had a bright inspiration today. Using a sharp cutter I tried peeling off most of the foam backing from the PE insulation sheet. It was a success and it's rather easy to do, just use a cutter with a brand new blade. What's left is the aluminum sheet with a little foam backing. The final product is a quite thin and by just coating the other side with contact cement you'll end up with DIY tape that's tough, flexible, and guaranteed to reflect UV-C light. 😀
Wow please do share. Thanks alot
Very informative and practical video, well done! I have a question, the items that you put in the boxes, how are been disindected on the surfaces that lay(touch the) on the bottom of the box where UVC cannot reach them? Do you turn them upside down and put them a little further than the first position to avoid contamination after the first disinfection circle and then repeat the process or what? Thanks!
Hi and thanks for the comment. Yes I turn the item every 5 minutes.
@@TrulyTaraph Thanks ;)
can you please give a tutorial on how to make it with local materials

very helpful! got a question I bought a uv care portable online banana test didnt work, does that mean my item is defective?
Hi sir Ren and thanks for the comment. I am curious of your uv care device. Does it use LED bulbs? Maybe the test was not enough to produce an effect? How long did you illuminate the banana? Please watch my other COVID-19 videos in the playlist here: ruclips.net/p/PLqn-otC-WuFup4XN3_ouEudLmvPbw__jR and comment. Stay safe!
Very helpful. How long do you expose items like phone keys and purse when using your 55L box with 8W UVC bulb? Thank you.
Hi Mac and thanks for your comment. My UV boxes have auto -off features of 5-10-30minutes and longer. So depending on the amount of items in the box I increase Exposure time. For small items like the ones you mentioned I believe 5 minutes is enough. It is very powerful and emits ozone after use. Please watch my other COVID-19 videos in the playlist here: ruclips.net/p/PLqn-otC-WuFup4XN3_ouEudLmvPbw__jR and comment. Stay safe!
Thank you for your reaponse. How long do you leave the items after disinfection to get rid of the O3?
Actually depends on the item but for keys and cellphones I just pick it up after the light turns off. I open the UV Box lid, get the item and close it back right away so I wont inhale the ozone gas. Hehe If I need the groceries right away, I open the lid for a few minutes and come back to pick up the groceries. You can really tell of there is still ozone gas left because it really smells. My concern is actually ozone deposits in the items. For baby stuff, i usually rinse the item or toy with water before giving it to the baby. Hope this helps. Stay safe!
Currently thinking to build a medium sized UVC box for phone, keys and documents disinfection. Will using T5 8W UVC lightbulb in anyway hurt the phone or plastics items? I will also attach an auto timer. What is the ideal time for each time? 10 minutes?
A medium sized box is big enough. Try using 5mins at a time. If you have a lot of items then just add another 5-10mins. We use our large UVC box for our phones since last year. No problems so far. Please watch my other COVID-19 related videos in the playlist here: ruclips.net/p/PLqn-otC-WuFup4XN3_ouEudLmvPbw__jR and comment. Stay safe!
does your set up with the one mounted on the ceiling portion of the box has ozone? or just uvc without ozone?
Hi! It is With ozone. Thanks
Hi, Ms. Tara! For disinfecting packages, do you still have to open the box/packaging or can the UV-C light seep through the cardboard box?
Hi Hazel, my husband does all the disinfecting and I will share with you his protocol.
Receive Package (wear a mask and wash hands after) > Open Delivery Plastic or Box > Do not open PACKAGE BOX and disinfect in UVC Box for 5-15 minutes depending on the size and quantity > Open PACKAGE BOX then if clothes (soak in soap and water right away or spray with Lysol BUT if it is an ITEM its ok to use already or if unsure then just wipe with alcohol or spray with Lysol. He is very particular with disinfection. He considers the inside of the box as clean since it has been untouched for days already. Only the BOX and Delivery plastic was handled.
Hope this helps.

Hi! May I know how you power the UVC box in the car? I’m a Speech-Language Pathologist and I often go to patients’ houses for therapy. I am in need of a mobile but powerful option for a UVC box (40-50L). Do you use a power station or the cigarette plug? Thank you in advance! Awesome and informative content by the way. ❤️
Hi Rachelle and thanks for the comment. You mean power the UV box to disinfect your stuff? Or the insides of the car? We dont use UV lights for disinfecting the car interior. We use primarily our Bleach generator spray or lysol to disinfect the interior then use a portable air purifier for the car while we are inside. If for disinfecting items inside the UVC box, We use the portable (black) uvc light which is usb charged. We leave it inside the box with the items and turn it on. hello how about Fresh produce like vegetables and meat do we need to disinfect using UV box? thank you (if yes-how many minutes )
Hi! For fresh veggies and meat we just wash immediately after buying from the grocery or market.
Hi. Would you know what size of plastic box is good for a 10W UVC bulb? Thanks in advance.
Hi Jo-Ann and thanks for the comment. Actually I don’t think there is a recommended size for power of the lamp. Because you can also adjust the duration of use. What I did was i just used a box bigger than my lamp by 2x the size. But this was just my estimate. If i have more stuff inside I just turn it on for 10-15 mins instead of just 5 mins. may i ask... can we sanitize chocolate bar or other food packaging (with food inside) by this box ? If not, why? thank you very much. p.s. I think some food packaging may have a very thin foil-like layer inside its packaging.
Hi! We have many UV boxes for disinfection at home and we use these for grocery disinfection. Many food packs (even transparent cover) we disinfect using UVC lights. Stay safe!
Hello may I ask what's the estimated time of disinfection for grocery products for the largest box??
Hi Jan, i usually disinfect groceries for 5 minutes each irradiation depending on the number of items in my grocery. I also turn the items after every 5 minutes and turn it on again for another 5 minutes to irradiate most of the grocery item surface. I can repeat this part as needed. Hope this helps. Take care.
hi i bought the uvc lamp u use at home and it is smaller than i thought. and there is only 1 lamp. are u sure it's effective to disinfect a room?
Hi! we have many UVC lamps and depending on the size of the room I choose the lamp. Or transfer to another part of the room if needed and turn on again.
Hi, how long do you disinfect a full load of groceries using the uv box?
Hi. Depends really on how much is being disinfected. If my box is full then I usually do 15 Minutes upto 2-3x and changing their positions after every interval to irradiate all sidesz
Hi Tara, izzit safe to sterilize phone inside? Say ard 5 mins. Just worried that it will get too hot.
Hi JV, we have been sterilizing our phones in this UV box since Last year. Thanks
Tara, is it safe to sterilise our smartphones under a T8 15w tube in the box? Thanks.
How to decide: what Wayy uvc lamp to use and how long to let it turn on. Thankyou.🙏
Correction: Watt...
Hi Sahala and thanks for the comment. I think the best way to know is how much space you need to irradiate and how many items you want to irradiate at a time. If i have too many stuff to disinfect then maybe get a big UVC Box with a light that is big enough to cover the entire surface. Also note that duration of irradiation is also very important. Small objects irradiated with my Big light I just use 5 minutes to disinfect. But if I have many stuff inside the box then I keep the light longer like 10-15 minutes at a time. By the way, I don't use the box for more than 15 minutes at a time since I noticed that the items inside gets hot or warm. So I keep it 15mins or less then turn it back on again after a few minutes of break. My 70L box is using an 8watt light and my usual irradiation time is 5 minutes when half full with items. Hello Angelie and thanks for the comment. Yes it is safe. I use our uvc box for baby stuff disinfection. After UV disinfection, I also wash the toys or bottles with soap and water just to get rid of the ozone that may stick in their surface. Its a little bit more hassle but I want to be sure. Ma'am, why do we need to put insulated foam po? Do I need to put insulated foam if my UVC light is with ozone technology? thanks
Hi Nickel, we don’t need an insulated foam. We need the other side of the foam which is a reflectorized material. Like a mirror for the UVC light to spread inside the box. Please watch my other COVID-19 related videos in the playlist here: ruclips.net/p/PLqn-otC-WuFup4XN3_ouEudLmvPbw__jR and comment. Stay safe!
We can’t use foil tape or aluminum foil because it tears very easily. I tried using it before and it didn’t last long. That is why I use insulation foam with reflectorized sides because it lasts longer. We need the mirrorized side and not the foam side. Thanks!

Depends but it is better to just heat up the food or wash with soap and water if possible.
You cannot disinfect a room with this tiny light. My firehouse uses a huge unit that runs for 45 minutes per room. Anything in shadow or more than a few I’m he’s away isn’t being disinfected. Always wear full skin and eye protection.
Finally, a full size UVC coffin (aka repurposed tanning bed). Each guest after entering your home is immediately asked to go in the coffin for 2 mins.
