@@BuletPrufe I read all my comments! Thanks for the support. The bit from John Green is from his book, 'The Anthropocene Reviewed', where he attributes the idea to Amy Krouse Rosenthal. I've never known Rosenthal or her work, so I personally attributed the notion to Green, but that's the full list, as far as I'm aware.

A niche that's unfortunately a dead genre: Real Time Strategy games.
Age of Empires 2 and 3
      Age of Mythology Titans
Warcraft 3 (i hate WoW solely because Warcraft 4 does not exist because of it)

@@saurabhkodre9426 I loved age of mythology titans and age of empires 1 and 2 as a kid, but now that I've tried it as an adult I realize how much I used the cheats as a kid to just summon a whole bunch of random things to fight, and with age of empires I used the car summon cheat and had a horde of cars killing everything lol.. I tried getting into age of empires 4 and got to a certain level that I just couldn't finish..

My proudest moment in my time playing KSP was Project DITBE (Dolly Isn't Thinking Big Enough), I achieved hypersonic velocity (Mach 5) at give or take about 8600 meters above sea level
The entire craft overheated from atmospheric friction and exploded about a second after reaching that point, but hey the pilot survived.

Finally, a place where my 700 hours in Cyberpunk is acceptable to mention! But jokes aside (the hours are not a joke, 5 playthroughs deep does a thing to a person), I love getting to hear about the games that people have invested in. When they hit, they hit. Been very much enjoying watching your videos. Your essays are well written, enjoyable, and it's like hearing a friend talk about shared niche interests. Or even when the interest isn't shared, I still want to hear your thoughts about it. So thank you for sharing your high hour investment games (mine include Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher 3, BG3, and Stardew Valley).

Damn, I only have that many hours in multiplayer games.
Really need to go back through and beat the Witcher 3.
Played it around the time it came out before any of the DLC’s and beat it with around 150 hours.
Have put around 80 hours into it on Steam since, on two different runs due to long pauses.
Will have to go back through and fully complete an alchemy build. So fun.

2:49 one of the best cut-away-jokes I've seen recently, as you released the SRBs too early and they all clearly will collide with the "open air" capsule on a rocket clearly built to do nothing less. Great line delivery too, added the perfect runway for the joke.

Rocket League, 3600h and counting. Always been a fan of sports and cars, so it was a perfect match for me. The community keeps discovering new mechanics, pushing the skill ceiling ever higher. I got hooked on feeling that growth of mastering a new skill even if my rank hasn't really improved in years. Also watching freestylers or the esport is mesmerizingly beautiful.

Also that statement about OSRS is too true, like it's uncanny how true it is lol. I played in middle school and i still play despite "quitting" and i'm 30 lol. At first i thought it was purely nostalgia, whether it's hearing the login theme, to Lumbridge, doing Dragon Slayer, getting members etc etc but no, we just take breaks, we never truly quit!
So many fond memories as well growing up with the game, be it Varrock East and West Bank - selling stuff, the colored texts, Zezima lol, "trimming" Rune Armor, etc etc!

The jump from OW to OW2 was already basically done for no reason, and then they just kept cutting things and letting it fall apart. Completely insane. A combined 4k (minimum, might be 5k) hours in Dark Souls 1-3, Bloodborne and Elden Ring, and nearly 7k (no idea exactly how many hours that is, just what the average time games last) games in League of Legends, with 6k-ish of them in ARAM. And thousands of hours on other games. All that gameplay, yet it's the stories and lore that keeps me interested. I'm so into the lore of Fromsoftware games that I could spend hours talking about it! That's not to say I don't have fun actually playing these games, I prefer to explore them alone at first but, I love playing with friends and randoms.

Hey! I love your videos, I have been watching for a while now. I just wanted to share that I never realized before how gaming can still feel so wrong even in adult life. Even when my wife became a gamer that spends hours and hours playing on her switch while I'll game beside her. Telling any other person about any amount of time playing any kind of game always feels like something that has to be calculated. It's funny, as a pianist, if I say that have practice for a lot of hours my piano, people get happy. It's really just a cultural thing, isn't it? Anyway, I'm very happy that your channel is one of those corners of the internet (John Green is another btw), where I feel safe and I feel like I understand what you're saying. And maybe you would understand what I could say as well. So thank you for that! I know I love anything cyberpunk, I now I love games, and that very specific hopeful kind of story that values humanity and connection. And I now I'm not alone. And it's okay to be like that.

I always find it weird when people talk about classless systems being their favorite, or even objectively better than class based RPGs. I grew up playing diablo 2/3 and borderlands 1/2 with my dad so I've yearned for good class systems and really only found them in CRPGs and MMOs.

I have had several gaming obsessions over the years, but none of them really got higher than about 100+ hours. I would get really into a game for about a week or two, playing basically nothing but that, before changing. Destiny 2, Mount & Blade 2, PowerWash Sim, World of Warcraft, Total War: Warhammer 2 and 3. Most recently though, it's been Final Fantasy 14, the MMO. It's my first game to reach 500+ hours, and before i picked it up again at the end of April, I had about 100 hours. My steam playtime has consistently shown 100+ hours in the past 2 weeks since then, as I've been slowly progressing through the main story and getting constantly side-tracked with all the things to do in Eorzea, and even getting side-tracked from my side-tracking. This obsession likely won't stop for a while longer.

I didn't first play OSRS until it was ported to mobile in like 2018? As a kid I played Asheron's call, and graduated to WoW in college, and it never hit my radar until then. Early game runescape is PERFECT for mobile. Once I got higher, I moved over to PC and went harder. It's a great casual numbers go up game, or a high skill prayer flick adventure. I like the flexibility.

I can't touch 3600 hrs., but I have almost 850 hours in Cyberpunk 2077. I think CP2077 is the greatest video game ever made, hands down.
I have 300 hours in Baldur's Gate 3. Although much of it isn't recorded anywhere, I probably have 600-700 hours into Fallout 4 (or more... owned the game on disk a long time ago. Lots of play then was offline... own it now on Steam and have 360 hours), and 500+ hours into Baldurs Gate 2, Sword of Amn/Throne of Bhall, none of which I get credit for anywhere.
But every hour of the 850 I have into Cyberpunk 2077 is recorded on Steam.
For me, 200+ hours into a game that I like is kind of standard. I never play a fast style, and I'm a completionist. The depths to which I search, for example, drives some people crazy in multiplayer. No stone unturned, as they say.

Oh my gosh and how could I forget to mention Minecraft? It's a game that never dies for me. Of course the constant updates help ahhaa. But it's truly a game that is only as limited as the player's imagination, and there's nothing else like it. I can get even my non-gamer friends into it and it's helped me stay connected with all my gaming friends even as we've grown up and moved to new states or countries.
Also, can't believe you play league too hahaha. I was very into it, joined in 2014 and stopped playing for good earlier this year. League brought me a majority of my online friends, and for that I'll always be grateful, but I just don't enjoy it anymore. I do feel like part of that is the community, which is hard to ignore when I like to use chat to.. ya know, talk with the ppl playing the same game as me? Now people are so quick to have an absolute meltdown in the chat, it took away one of my favorite things about playing this social game.
Someday I might return. TFT was pretty fun and I'm sure I'll miss it eventually. But between the tilters, feeders, insane item changes, champ reworks, and what feels like an overabundance of champions, I just got tired of it.
The chokehold it had on me for those 10 years was insane tho.

started with the C64 and then early Apogee games and other indies on the 286 , moved on to the Ultima series with 5/6/7/8/UW 1&2 , and basically everything from Origin Systems ; the 90s were an amazing time for videogames , BBS MUDs , Wolfenstein/DOOM , Mechwarrior , Diablo , Baldurs Gate , the TSR DnD games , C&C , Warcraft 1&2 , etc ; ending the millenium with spending a lot of time with Ultima Online , then got into arguably the best MMORPG in 2004 , City of Heroes , and imho nothing else compared ; eventually NCSoft betrayed the community and the developers and shut down the game servers and refused to sell the IP to the original dev studio ; since then i have adopted Warframe and SMITE , which are basically polar opposites , and ofc City of Heroes is now back forever [being open-sourced and decentralized] with several private servers ; but truly i spend more time with video essays like this than i do playing games these days XD

I used to play league way back in the day. I"m talking like... season 2 back in the day. I was... slightly above average at it, too. Was in the middle tier ranked for a while without really pushing myself too hard for it. But the community got too toxic for me, so I backed out. I've heard how much it's changed since then, and I actually tried to poke at it last year and... yeah, no. It's basically a completely different game now. All of my mains are effectively completely new characters, and most of the builds are different, and some of the items aren't even the same thing anymore... and I just don't have the... drive I did when I was in my late 20's anymore. Not for something like that, at least.

I highly recommend playing RuneScape 3 when you don't like how the current gameplay of OSRS is obsessed with tick manipulation. You can really easily play both RuneScapes at once since your membership works for both, and RS3 is both much less tryhard/more chill, and not based around ticks as the primary mechanic.
To me, OSRS is for challenge runs and self imposed restrictions, but RS3 is for actually having normal old-school runescapey fun. Ironic, since it's OSRS that claims to be old-school, but it's what I've experienced.

I mean, metal gear solid, gta, shadow of the colossus, etc, those seems to me like the games I would naturaly choose to that list, but...as much glitches it has, how much problems and all that, if I spend 6000 hours in a game...is because something pulls me back in...I had around 3000 hours on gta v, but that is comprehensible...but Ark?! Fallout 76?! I would never believe if someone said tell me "you will live in those games..." But here I am, playing F76, with an ich allways saying to me "cummon...put Ark back on...do it!..."
