Saying Goodbye to Dark Souls
So far in this year I've learned that I enjoy Elden Ring more than I thought I did, and that I enjoy Dark Souls less than I thought I did. Maybe someday I'll get to just play a FromSoft game and enjoy it exactly as much as I expect.
In truth, this video was hit pretty hard from me realizing half-way through production that the message was going to be entirely different than I'd planned. The working title here was 'Dark Souls is a Perfect Game', but this ended up being a story about outgrowing a thing you used to love. Coupled with the fact that I ended up being swamped with non-video work for the second half of this month, I'm really just content to have this one done. I hope you all enjoy...

Halo: Reach, and the Death of the Spartan

How many videos can this guy make on the Halo series without actually covering the main Halo games? Find out next time on Halo Wars. I have a growing love and appreciation for spin-offs and new perspectives, and Halo is truly ripe for choice when it comes to those styles of stories. Last year I covered ODST, and how it presents the perspective of what it means to be a Human in the Halo world. T...
How I Learned to Love Elden Ring
Просмотров 50 тыс.Месяц назад
I've got kind of a weird relationship with Elden Ring; you guys mind if I talk about it for a minute or two? After 150 hours of Elden Ring, I was sad that I just couldn't see what everyone else saw in this game. So I started the process of making a video to discuss that, only for parts of Elden Ring to begin to click as I played the game past the 150 hour mark. So I made the call to do one fina...

I've put around 100 hours into Skyrim in the last year, casually popping in and out to just play around. Of course, I have another 400 hours or so across three different versions of the game, and no matter what I seem to do in any of them I always end up crouched, with a bow, in some shadowy corner, and today I want to figure out why. Republic Commando, and the greatest story in Star Wars

It's an older video game, but it checks out. Republic Commando is one of my very first games I ever played. It was virtually impossible for a child Thane to finish the game without cheat codes, and now that I'm an adult, with a fully functional adult brain, I just replayed it on the easiest difficulty. The bridge at Kachirho still has hands, hot damn. This video is to recognize Republic Command...

I first noticed the changes when I was running through the prologue the second time because I was dialogue hunting. If you kill no one in your escape then they only mention what you were framed for, but if you go on a killing spree, they mention that you killed several guards.

Personally I had the most fun with the sneak dual wield build, but it's a bit cheesy because you want to max out stealth by sneak attacking some immortal npc early on, but then you just duck, turn invisibile, and one shot anything in front of you in one hit even while in the middle of a fight lol, maybe a power attack it it's a dragon or something. On the other hand, this doesn't always work, and doesn't seem to work with companions, meanwhile archery doesn't really require cheese, and with enough enchantment or whatever it's very deadly anyway, and from time to time there are is some enemy in an annoying hard to reach spot, and why walk when can just shoot them

You need range to fight successfully in the game. There's flying dragons as the whole theme of the game to begin with. Which means your two options are destruction magic or archery. I did go a purely melee build, using dual wielded axes, and it was genuinely one of the strongest builds I've ever run. Level of armor to make me practically immortal, and with the Ork's rage could practically one combo any enemy in the game with a flurry of swipes.... .... But then again... every time a random dragon appeared... it was a very not fun 1-2 minutes of sitting around waiting for it to land. Meanwhile any follower or horse I tried to take with me would inevitably just die to long range attacks.

wish more games would adopt Deus Ex brutal approach to assigning skill. i.e. unless you invest a substantial amount of XP into a skill, you're functionally or literally useless at it. rather than every character always being able to swing a sword and throw a fireball and pick a lock and navigate through hyperspace (which allegedly ain't like dusting crops) it hurts my soul to spin up a purely sword-and-armour fighter only to be shown how to cast fireballs in the game's opening chapter

This video is great! i never thought about the topic in this way, but i could relate to everything you've said. My thoughts on the topic were more about the positive sides of archery, but i've never compared it to the oversimplified melee combat the way you did. I always hated that i can't choose my favourite spell as a mage and just level up the damage... it would have made magic much more interesting to be able to choose the best spell by the situation and not just use the one that deals enough damage.

This is why most relationships die. Once the spark goes out, people call it quits, and so they miss out on the truest magic... Which Dark Souls is the Prophet of... Delayed-Gratification and Commitment. You hit a rocky patch with your BAE, so now you can call it quits or double down in SHEER INSANELY BOLD COMMITMENT and power through your distaste; and soon HATRED, of the thing you love. Thing is... Both Stockholm Syndrome and Addiction via omnipresence, are things. So, your commitment will ensure your spark comes back sooner, but you gotta play the long game... and work on it slowly. In your case, I'd say beating the game 6 times in a month with grueling challenge runs that punish you more than reward you, with sporadic but daily short game log ins... would probably reignite your spark. I think your problem is that you simply fell in love with someone else and now you keep comparing your old love to your new one. Your ability to be charmed by all the little things she does has diminished, and you are expecting things to just click automatically. They won't, until you come back in a year or two later. That's how the natural process works. Do whatever you like, Dark Souls is worth the commitment, but that's a "YOU" thing to decide. Let Mme just say though, the more times you commit COMPLETELY to something, the taller you grow, as the deeper your roots expand and probe the depths of existence.

When I was a kid playing oblivion I could never not-play a sneak-maxing stealth Archer with a minor in conjuration. Something felt good about how overpowered it was and the way it felt like cheating felt like I was outsmarting the game with my strategy. I did the same in Fallout 3, sneak and guns. In retrospect, it kind of ruined the games for me. Every encounter played out the same, every strategy in every playthrough was pretty much identical. I would loot bodies I one-shot from a mile away and see all the environmental hazards in the area, traps I could have activated, alternate paths I could have snuck through, especially in fallout where explosive barrels or terminals with hackable turrets would be sitting around but here I'd killed everything in the least interactive way possible already..

I find it interesting how Bungie has already made the Guardian tenants before Destiny was a thing. “Devotion inspires Bravery, Bravery inspires Sacrifice, Sacrifice leads to Death.” There UNSC is Devoted to win the Human-Covenant War, which leads to the Bravery of Mankind and the creation of the Spartans. The Spartans and the rest of mankind were willing to Sacrifice everything to win, and in the end their Deaths were not in vain, they were honored, commended, their deaths justified with the death of the Prophets and the destruction of the Covenant.

This is the one game I played 3 times in a row, doing nearly everything each time, and then got the DLC very soon after, like within 2 weeks, and played it again. It's still a mess, even after 2.0, but the world and characters kept bringing me back despite all the bugs clearly leeching fun out of the game each play through. If this game hadn't failed so hard mechanically on launch, if it had more fleshed out rewards for things like non-lethal, it could have potentially been the greatest game of all time

Primarily stealth archer ended up being my first real play through. There's a reason my magic build was lightning bolt, the only one I didn't hear you address. It's single target and basically if not actually hit scan. I saw a recommendation to not prestige or whatever exactly it's called for your main damage skill, and I can't count how many times I did that and barely noticed overall. It was still frustrating getting to the point I could have and use lightning bolt consistently.

Ranged builds are certainly not meta in souls games/elden ring, but having a ranged weapon still lowers the difficulty of the game a great deal. A lot of toxic areas (in the figurative sense) get trivialized, and a surprising number of otherwise complex bosses have a very narrow range of threats when the player is just trying to create space and shoot during something committal. I suspect there are a few reasons plinking a boss to death with a light crossbow isn't a popular approach to the game. It's slow, you don't get to actually interact with full boss move sets, and even comes with a small logistics tax to buy the bolts/arrows. Nevertheless, I have been surprised quite a few times just how much less skill it takes to "run backwards + occasionally time roll, then shoot" to beat various Dark Souls 2/3 and Elden Ring bosses. Especially the latter, where it's a lot easier to come by status ailments on ranged weapons too.

There's a video on GMTK's channel that shows how ODST was limited by the time it came out since it did many things future games did, but more "primitive." And yet, the game still feels so unique and special, kind of (to me) the same way the Ori games do. None of them have the deepest story, or the most complex characters, but what they do have, they deliver. It's amazing how a bunch of details and great dialogue can drastically change how you perceive a game, and how music alone manages to make you feel lonely but also willing to do everything it takes to survive, despite the failures of the many people that preceded you.
