  • Wildlife trafficking is estimated to be a $19 billion per year global business, surpassed only by black-market sales and trafficking of drugs, humans, and firearms.
    In the United States, regulation of private ownership of exotic animals is determined by each state, allowing for loopholes and oversight. Animals are bought and traded through auctions, backyard breeders, illicit online sales and more. The industry is growing right in our backyards.
    VICE travels to Ohio to rescue a cougar, then to Texas for an exotic livestock auction and undercover visit to a gaming ranch where the animals are sold and hunted for up to $15,000 a piece.

      I mean if you're referring to the animals at the rescue facility, its likely just ptsd. As he said, a lot of them were kept as pets and circus animals (in small confined spaces) so even with all the added room, other animals to play with, they are just scarred and can't act like normal animals.

      +HYPER MASTIA Removing any necessary part from an animal IS an actual crime here in he UK.The only body parts legally removable by a qualified veterinarian are the sex organs (testes and uterus/ovaries) in a normal spay/neuter procedure. Only puppies which will go on to become working dogs working jobs which may occur a tail injury are allowed to have their tail docked. This was only banned about 8-10 years ago so you do see dogs with docked tails still, but when compared to their fully tailed counterparts from the same breeds, the tail, there as it should be, looks far better breed by breed. Nice to see ear cropping go too, now pinscher breeds look normal again.

      Glenn Smith I am 65 and I have worked in rescue both wildlife and dogs and cats from the age of 12 till 5 years ago when I became disabled. There two types of rescuers. The first one really cares about the animals and in the case of wild animals want to see them in better conditions if they cannot be returned to the wild for one reason or another. The second is basically a legal hoarder. The legal hoarder loves the animals but they believe
      that no one can love, care for or respect the animal (whether true or not) better than them personally. The "rescuer" (legal hoarder ) will do anything to remove animals out of private ownership no matter how wonderful the private situation may be. Again it's because they really really believe that NO ONE can love and respect the animal more than them.I lleftwildlife rescue because there were more and more of the second type coming into the rescue groups. Don't get me started or I will get into how much I hate PETA and H$U$. I have worked with those hypocrites in the past too. Please remember that there is always two sides to every story with rescues and animal groups like PETA and H$U$.

Not long after she came home, the cougar had followed her and kept scratching on her door. She didn’t let it in her house or anything either because she doesn’t wanna make it too comfortable around her. So she just keeps her outside and gives her everything she needs. She fed her chicken meat and buck meat. She also made her a little shelter in her back yard. It escaped one time and he and his friends had to hunt it down, tranq it, load it into a van and take it back home. He got rid of it a little while later. I could be out playing in our yard and hear that thing roaring just a couple streets over. You get used to it after a while but after it escaped that one time everyone felt a lot less safe knowing that thing was nearby and had already gotten out before. I think the owner was worried after that happened as well and that’s why he sold it or gave it away, not sure which.

      Its still considered an exotic pet. Snakes, reptiles and other non-normal pets such as ferrets, large parrots and some places even consider rats as exotic cause its not a hamster, gerbil, cat, dog or a gold fish.
      Also just cause ball pythons are common pets does not mean they and other reptiles are not trafficked badly like other animals. I am in the hobby and have a few snakes and other reptiles, all of mine are from local reputable breeders, but I also know that there are people out there that do not care, breed them in masses in tiny containers (like the Ball python in the video) and just do it to sell money, cause you can get over 5,000 dollars for one female breeding ready piebald ball python. Them, tegus, monitor lizards, turtles and tortoises, iguanas and even bearded dragons are in a VERY bad way with illegal smuggling and trafficking, as are some more uncommon names that are usually wild caught imports who generally are very sick and mistreated.

      @@xBloodxFangx not much of what you said was relevant to my comment. I'm a snake keeper too (lesser ball python and amel cornsnake) and I was only making a point about how at that time stamp, the guy kept going on about how people wanted rare endangered animals, while showing a ball python (which are of least concern on the conservation status). I think it counts as misinformation because if someone who doesn't know shit about snakes watches this documentary, sees a ball python, and then goes online and sees people are owning ball pythons, they might wrongfully assume that person (like you and I) are owning an endangered species just for shits and giggles.

      Hamsters run the equivalent of 4 human marathons every night. Not even an ANT FARM provides the animals the right amounts of space. Let me think of a few pets that we traditionally keep in the same range it experiences in the wild: barnacles, sea anemones, snails...actually no, snails probably have a bigger range.

    These people who buy exotics and let people onto their land to shoot them are sick in their heads. The hunters of these animals are especially sick. They could be working with organizations to breed and release the animals back into the wild (the endangered or threatened ones at least). But they'd rather allow some idiots with guns into their property come in and claim a "trophy" just so they can say that they had such creatures on their land at one time. Then they go buy more. It's shameful. How about buying some animals and allowing them to live in peace on your property without the threat of hunters? Whatever happened to live and let live - just enjoying these majestic creatures? People are never satisfied.

      Many of the hunting ranches DO have animals that are allowed to live their lives peacefully. While there are a select number that are picked out to be hunted as game so they can continue to run these ranches. Not all of them do this. But I've heard of some that do. Game Preserves work the same way.

  • @sammuirhead8827
    @sammuirhead8827 9 лет назад +41

    This is disgraceful, almost all the animals featured in this video were clearly distressed. As much as the sanctuary is trying to do a good thing, I have serious concerns about how they're going about it. How they are retrieving and transferring animals and even how they are housing them. Cougars are solitary animals, and being that close to other cats and dogs is highly stressful. Not to mention shooting a cat at almost point blank range with a tranq. Did they even have a registered vet or vet nurse there, who the hell was the one administering the medications? They clearly messed up the dosage.
    That's nothing on the disgrace that is the American public who think this is appropriate. Where is the American government on this? They clearly need federal legislation on this matter, especially since it's a national security issue. It has been well-documented that many of the sources of these animals are criminal organisations who have gleaned a profit from American citizens who've bought often endangered species. I would think that is something the American government should be concerned about, their lack of regulation of the illegal wildlife trade potentially causing Americans to bank roll warlords and criminal factions the government claim to be at odds with.

    • @dotapazappy
      @dotapazappy 6 лет назад +4

      Yeah I know they were saying how dangerous it was and I get that they were worried not knowing the people or the cat very well but.... It seemed so cruel to tranq her point blank and stab her with a stick to knock her out. The owner probably could've just done a better job putting her in the cage and it was clear that even while being wrestled to the ground surrounded by strangers she wasn't hurting him or responding with biting. Just let the guy pick her up and put her in the cage instead of making up some BS about how it's better for her this way.

      OBVIOUSLY you know NOTHING about immobilizing a wild animal, the dosage was right I’m sure, but animals, even domestic animals can fight against the drugs and they can only give them so much ket or they can kill them. And the closer the better when using a tranquilizer gun, they are not very accurate and the animal needs the be hit in the muscle for it to work. The only disgraceful one are the uneducated folks commenting on here about shit the know nothing about. Next time maybe you can enter the cage and gently give the cat a shot directly into a vein for them 😂😂🤣🤣😂😂

When I hear this man saying that the people with the cougar and the bear had done a really good job taking care of them, this simply wasn't true. They aren't meant to live in a cage even if it's the size of an enclosed carport. These animals belong in nature, not in cages. This big cat refuge wasn't as bad as that, but I've seen much better wildlife sanctuaries.
