    Let me start by saying people can play whatever deck they want that brings them joy. If I'm playing against a board wipe tribal deck I'm focusing that player first and wouldn't stop until they're gone.

      @@jeremysnowden1286 I mean, it's not really salt it's just a fact. If someone is board wiping basically every turn, no one can build any sort of board state to play against them. Therefore, they need to be taken out first so you can build an actual state to go against the other decks. Now if I was playing something like haste tribal I wouldn't target the board wipe deck because, yes please, wipe the board for me.

    Nightmare Shepherd is a nombo with Athreos.
    If you exile the creature card to create the token with the Shepherd, Athreos can no longer track it because it becomes a new object. And if you bring it back with Athreos, you can't exile it to create the token.
    You can't get a token AND bring the creature back at the same time.

    I don't believe the Shepard works with Athrios like that. Once the one trigger resolves the other would lose its target since it is in a new zone. Can someone confirm this or not?

    • @jordiromagosa5383
      @jordiromagosa5383 4 месяца назад +6

      They don't. Both trigger, but only the first one to resolve brings it back. The other trigger fizzles because it doesn't have a valid target anymore (it technically isn't a target because the word isn't used, but they do 'target' the card).

    • @Zaalbarjedi
      @Zaalbarjedi 4 месяца назад +2

      Neither of the triggers target anything!
      They still don't work together though.

    • @41F
      @41F 4 месяца назад +7

      The controller gets to choose which order to resolve, but choosing either one will make the other ability not work:
      If you choose to resolve Athreos's ability first, then the shepherd will not be able to see that the game object has changed zones from the graveyard to the battlefield (see CR rule 400.7). It will only look in the graveyard and since it's no longer there, the "you may exile it. If you do" portion won't happen.
      Likewise, if you resolve the shepherd's ability first, then a similar thing will happen when Athreos attempts to return it to the battlefield. The ability will fail to find the game object in the zone it expected to, and be unable to perform the game action of putting it from that zone onto the battlefield.

      I questioned that too, especially if it couldn't haven indestructible even if there was an exile boardwipe on the board. I would've just kept pressuring the boardwipe deck with ulamog and politic'ed my way from not being attacked even after the exile board wipe

    Shepard and athreos do not work like that. Because the coin counters disappear when a creature changes zones, athreos cannot bring back creatures exiled through Shepard's ability.

    • @MTGMuddstah

      Good to know! Thank you for pointing that out.

    • @JR-ti5jm
      @JR-ti5jm 4 месяца назад

      Further clarification on case anyone is wondering why:
      Athreos ability reads "Whenever a creature with a coin counter on it dies or is put into exile, return that card to the battlefield under your control."
      Nightmare Shepherd reads "Whenever another nontoken creature you control dies, you may exile it. If you do, create a token that’s a copy of that creature, except it’s 1/1 and it’s a Nightmare in addition to its other types."
      So, basically he could bring the creature back with the Athreos ability when it dies or it's exiled 'from the battlefield.'
      But if you choose to exile it with Nightmare Shepherd when it dies, Athreos can't return it and it will remain in exile.

    The Jetmir deck plays 9 enchantments, most of which are mostly 'win-more' cards, in other words dead draws after a boardwipe. Replace 3x5mana ones for Tendershoot Dryad, or any mass token generator, a Rhythm of the Wild and a Bitter Reunion and you will feel better about the deck. Also put 2-3 'your creatures don't die to boardwipes this turn' spells in there. There are sooo many in white :))

      I usually see the first stax player in a group not getting invited back more than the bunch of boardwipes player. But then again, im not a good perspective on this because one of the guys that taught me to play’s pet deck is oloro boardwipes and walkers, then another of the introductory players built a grixis control deck shortly after, And when we complained that it didn’t let us do anything he switched to Augustin IV and showed us what true “can’t play the game” looks like. This was back in 2017 though so ive grown as a person and as a player and now i just know to build more interaction into my decks and use it more to my own benefit.
