Interesting loco, and great sound on her too! I know they changed out the original horizontal-piston engine, but what's under the noses now?
Steeple cab designs are some of my favorites, so seeing this reminds me heavily of them.

This is the only surviving Class 17. They were introduced in the 1960's as supposedly the new Standard Type 1 diesel loco and were mainly confined to the Scottish Region. They were failures so much so that even when still being delivered new they were going straight in to the dump where all the failed ones were already parked. All were withdrawn after a short time, this one only survived as it was sold into industrial service with Ribble Cement. None of the other Type 1 designs lasted very long other than the highly successful English Electric Class 20, a number of which are around today in main line use as well as preserved, a classic loco, a design now getting on for sixty years since first introduced, even going back into m ain line use.

They were unsuccessful because they were rushed into production without going through the prototype phase.
In my opinion, if the Class 17’s had prototypes made to make sure all the issues were ironed out, it could’ve been a rather successful diesel.

+bill1234bob1 well this one was "Cured" with a new engine, instead of its original failed modified engine.

If they were so crap, how come this one's doing so well? I'm not saying they weren't crap but this one seems to have been quite successful in preservation.

The first shot was taken from a public footpath which starts from Church End road in Bledlow and crosses the railway. The second shot was taken from the right side of the fence (public side not railway side) next to a railway bridge abuttment but I've forgotten which. Great friendly railway though and would thoroughly recommend a visit
