This reminds me of all the trends I’ve followed in my 76 years. We never had enough money but my mom and I transformed every rental that our family of six moved to almost every year. I got serious in gr. 9 when I painted a sepia ponderosa pine wall mural on the living room wall, bought Sputnik planters all very trendy at the time! Art school communal digs had me painting the brick fireplace and wood trim black, another student rental had me painting all my bamboo furnishings red lacquer. Still at it and loving all the changes. I’ve been into hiding it all for years and can’t wait to do it for my latest place. Love seeing what you’re sharing every week!

I've had a wall with 4 pieces of art on it for 14 years, it still pleases me no end. Only a little open shelving for cookbooks. Cabinets have framed glass doors and wallpaper inside, more fun than just white wall behind the China and glass. 5 years ago I painted the chocolate brown uppers creamy white and the lowers a light sage green, after a farrow & ball French green and added colored glass knobs, we've enjoyed it a LOT! It brightened and opened up the weirdly long kitchen and became much happier. So did I!
Open shelving out? Thank GOD. In our kitchen we went with small (height wise) MW that has an integrated hood/exhaust that is vented through the roof. I did NOT want a microwave to sit anywhere on my counter so this seemed like the best option. It's pretty sleek and is very efficient at exhausting cooking smell/smoke/heat, etc. If I could've figured out where to put the MW inside a cabinet (and believe me, we tried) I would've and then had only a hood over the range. It seems like the best compromise.
I bought a brand new townhouse last year... with an over the stove microwave. Every house I looked at in my price range had one. So builders are still putting them in. As someone who doesn't cook (seriously have yet to use the oven), I love it. Saves me counter space for a necessary appliance... even if i do have to stretch a bit to get up there. ** vertically challenged ** 😂
I'm right there with you. I'm tall and not bending down to use a microwave. Mine will stay over the stove as it is the second most used appliance (after the fridge) in my kitchen.
An appliance garage and a cabinet with an apothecary pull-out were the best decisions with our kitchen reno. Integrated appliances have been standard here in Europe since the 80s. We have 'split stoves' where the ceramic hub is integrated in the countertop and the baking oven is integrated in a cabinet at breast hight, so you can access the oven without having to bend down, which is very convenient, and the open oven door will not block the access to the stove when cooking (which can be very annoying in European small kitchens). Another thing I can recommend and wich is still popular here: glass backsplash. I love it! You can get it in different colors and it's so easy to clean because you have no grouts at all. And I think it is a lot more cost-efficient than stone.

@@tinamcivor2996This was my comment as well. Appliances don't last as long as they used to (at least here in America), so spending all that money on an integrated appliance seems like it will backfire when it likely needs maintenance in around five years.
I don’t care at all that my all white kitchen is “out trending”. I LOVE my clean and bright kitchen. I have lots of boho accents, wood…green…its so warm and cozy at the same time. I grew up in a white kitchen too. Love!
Like a broken clock that’s right twice a day, I occasionally happen to be right on trend with my interior decorating! We are lucky enough that my grandfather was an artist and we have more original paintings than wall space, so yes we have several original art pieces in the dining room section of our kitchen. For backsplash: for those people like me that can’t afford a slab of marble or even quartz countertop material as backsplash: we used large format tiles in our kitchen renovation last year. We used 2x4‘ tiles with very narrow grout, so that it looks like a slab. We used tiles that have a slight three dimensional profile to give it some interest. Lastly, I think people spend too much time on the looks of the kitchen and not enough on the functionalilty (how to organize a kitchen). I see high-end kitchens with fancy appliances and marble countertops, but they don’t seem to have drawers. We have drawers for all bottom cabinets and it’s such a game changer. No crawling into the back of the cabinet to find lost items. You pull the drawer out and everything is there to see. We have deep drawers for pots and pans. You can put the pans vertical with dividers and safe space. And than there are pull-out options for spice racks, or deep pantry cabinets etc. Kitchen sink is also something worth carefully thinking about in terms of functionality. I love our workstation sink for example.
My kitchen is white, black, and stainless steel, but I don't think I would change any of the big things in it because 1) It's more timeless 2) I'm not made of money to be able to change it every 3 years like you mentioned. I do love the moody colors in a kitchen, but it's not super practical for someone like me. I'd rather add color via artwork, cookbooks, or plants that I can easily change out.
I love an OTR microwave! Such a good use of space and so convenient!! Giant range hoods are so annoying to me, because of how much space they use up -- space that couple be used for storage -- or a microwave!
My ten year (almost 10 years ago!) consisted of painting the oak cabinets. Ivory uppers, soft blue gray lowers, and the cheapest cabinet and drawer pulls I could find. Paint on the walls, hung some art. Done! Love it, not looking to change any time soon.
I was at IKEA planning my kitchen when I saw this video pop up. The planner and I had fun seeing what you thought was in and out. I did not, by the way, get all white.
Can i make a suggestion for video editing? Can you make the red border green when showing images that you like... the "Do's", and keep the red border for the "Don'ts". 🤷♀️ I think about this in all of your videos since i guess im simple and when i see a red border i often wonder if i missed something and youre showing the "Don'ts" 😅
I am in the process of renovating my home. As I have a few artists in the family, we want to accommodate pieces in every room of the house. Part of the renovation is a large pantry that will house as much as possible (dry/canned goods as well as dishes, flatware, and less used appliances/cookware) so there will a lot more room in the actual kitchen. Very little cabinetry, which I never liked anyway. I like the lamp idea. And, I'm short...........no over the range microwave for us!
I have all white appliances - the push back from the store when I ordered was wild! I wanted the white appliance look with white subway tile but a more neutral cabinet (greigish stained wood) to balance the white. I have a mix of open storage (pots and pans hanging rack above the stove instead of cabinets, magnetic knife rack, and prime spices in open shelving near the stove) but other cabinets are closed for hiding the clutter and cheaper kitchen stuff. For my kitchen which is used a lot, functional wins, but love to have some easier to change pieces to reflect trends. But all other rooms I love your input. :)
Open shelving in a kitchen is a big no for me - especially around the stove - yuk. The only kitchen open shelving I've seen that I liked was in this video at the end of the island with the cookbooks - that was attractive. I too, have artwork and a table lamp in kitchen - always have! ❤
Woohoo, I'm on trend for once! I've got artwork in the kitchen, the coffee station, the dark wood cabinets, and the counter in the walk-in pantry (where the stand mixer permanently lives). I will say having a walk-in pantry with a counter is great. You can leave all the prep work mess on the counter, shut the door, and guests never know the mess exists.
Most of my reasons for the not over the range microwave are all functional. I want a really good vent system over my cooktop. And invariably someone is trying to use the darn thing while i am busy cooking. And that someone being me doesn't make it convenient. Besides, what i really want as a microwave is a combination convection microwave oven. And that i would like above the built-in electric conventional oven. I grew up with a kitchen with 2 very large wall ovens. As a teenager i baked all the bread used in a household of 8 plus regular guests. We entertained. We used those ovens. I miss those ovens.
I bought an All in One oven. It can steam, microwave, and bake at the same time. It's important to me because many countertop spaces are saved and lesser things to take care of.
Loved this practical common sense video, esp. the open shelving section--greasy plates, bowls, books, art, etc. But I found myself staring at the clock--Time stood still.
This is such useful information. We are designing our home while waiting for our little one to be born. I think I have the tendency to make the design really minimalistic and boring, so your page is a really great source of ideas how to make the spaces more interesting.
Purchased my grandma’s house (as is) since I couldn’t stand to see it sold to a stranger… finally have the house cleared out, so time for décor! As soon as I was thinking of building a shelf and moving my microwave to over the stove, to make room for this lamp I apparently need in the kitchen, he tells me over the range microwaves are out 😳 LOL! My girlfriend and I would love to have a designer come and help us 😩
OTR - something to bang your head on while cooking! So glad to say I have artwork in my new kitchen and my small sections of open shelves holds my teas, coffees, plants and a few special pieces. Happy Canada Day 🇨🇦
I had Tuscan decor in my kitchen & livingroom for 12 years. I’m going with a mostly white kitchen in my new house. The new kitchen is also in the center of the house without direct sunlight, so I don’t want it to be dark.
I think - all white kitchen and have your accessories add the color. A white kitchen with pops of red looks clean, fresh and pretty. A lot less expensive to change out your accessories to fit your mood, than to reno an entire kitchen. Now days, they can cost as much as a car!!!
I'm hoping that paneled appliances get cheaper as they get more popular. In my recent reno my available choices were either a small Ikea fridge or a 20K fridge. Sigh. I do not know, though, how people can do without microwaves. We use ours at least 10 times a day, probably closer to 20 times because the second our coffee gets cold we want to heat it up. We will let our daughter microwave but not use the oven. So it is our most go-to appliance after the fridge.
Art I am not comfortable with is oils and watercolours. I use either glass framed tin graphics or glass framed cross stitch to avoid permanent damage from kitchen moisture and verdigris. Garages🤔the doors would”never” be closed. The coffee, tea station👏 our kitchen would not be complete without one. We both love it.
I have these huge shelves or ledges above my cabinet. Idk I don’t know how to explain it but traditionally I think there were fake plants up there. Putting some large canvases up there is a great idea. I’ve been wanting to repurpose a few large art pieces myself. Thanks!
I don't particularly love the microwave over the range but I HATE range hoods. Especially when they are huge and waste a ton of space that could be used for anything else (like storage). If there is something else that can camouflage and make the range hoods less prominent, let me know.
Super, super video! What about windows and window treatment? Sometimes the design of a kitchen is limited by the type and finishes of the windows, and doors. Do you have any design tips on how to overcome these limitations? One other trend, I have seen most specific to multifunctional open plan (kitchen+dining+sitting/TV Room) is what I call the 'inconspicuous kitchen' design scenario. You actually touched on it when talking about integrated appliances. I honestly don't know if it is at all suitable with the kitchen idea, to have a kitchen that looks like a boardroom.
I started using a small cute lamp in my kitchen about 7 years ago when the light above my stove went out. I preferred the look of my little lamp, so I kept it there. Plus, it was just easier to change the bulb🤣
Love the video as always. I have an over the range microwave which I like. My kids can’t reach it. But it’s not my fault they’re short. ha ha but I never knew about steam ovens so I’m learning more from you than just design tips. Thx!
Hi, just a question…if you integrate your fridge etc, what happens when you need to replace it? Are fridges standard size? I m afraid I won’t find the same size if I do decide to integrate in the kitchen I m going to build soon. Thanks in advance
The open shelves i know they do get a little messy ans cramped … but it looks like a kitchen supposed to be … messy and organic… it shows your genuine personality and flavor in your kitchen
I’ve always loved me a bright, white kitchen and I finally have one! The rental I moved into last year has beautiful white cabinetry with granite countertops. And yes, I DO live in a suburb of Salt Lake City. 😂 Although I’m neither a mommy nor a blogger.
I hate all things interior design...except you! Oh my goodness, you bring things to such a real yet professional level. You seem incredibly gifted in what you do.
Builders are still installing OTR microwaves, like they're a must-have. My house was built that way too. Their microwave radiation isn't "that" powerful, but combined with the same type of radiation coming from cordless phone bases, cellphones & towers, wi-fi base stations, smart meters, etc, it all adds up to a lot. The FDA website says do not stand in front of a microwave when it's running & constantly inspect it for seal leaks to avoid radiation harm. It also says the eyes are particularly vulnerable.....OTR microwave ovens are at eyeball level !! So I removed the ugly microwave & installed a range hood (surprisingly easy to DIY!) & it really opened up the space over the range, and the venting is SO much better. Side note: I have noticed that many folks have removed the doors on their kitchen cabinets for the open-shelving look. It doesn't look like open shelving. It looks like cabinets that are missing their doors. Sorry but its true. 🤷♀
I have a lot of white in my kitchen, the cabinets, the appliances, and the backsplash. But I have multi colored gray countertops, gray grout between the tiles, nice, bright colors on the wall, and brown flooring. I think white looks nice in the kitchen, but not all white.
Open shelving. All I see is cats having the times of their lives, knocking things off one by one and enjoying the crashes. And I prefer that over the inevitable earthquake shake that does the same thing without making anyone happy. Cheers from California.
I like this one. Not too out there. Yes, some you’ve done before, however, again, you have high quality examples that cause me to dream. And… when to see a day in the life of Nick, as a designer😃? Cheers.
I love you. Thank you 🙏 Doing our 1st kitchen reno, had my gray & white totally picked out, saw your video that gray & white is OUT….😬. Aaaaannddd….I completely changed the design after informing myself with your videos (& some others but yours are the best;). Sounds a little crazy but truthfully, I don’t have time to keep up with trends & I was completely unaware. Thank you. I love your way. And I was able to redesign the style to marry what we had with what is trending in a way I can live with. Favo thing about you is how you give the ideas but also caution to “do you.” Love it! Now, our new kitchen will be awesome! 👏👏👏
I would argue that that sort of storage solutions would be more important in open kitchens and especially so livingroom-kitchens (dunno if these are common aboard but basically every apartement with less than two bedrooms has a shared kitchen-living room in finland) You dont actually need more than a meter or so of counter top space in kitchen if even that if you use an actual table, which depending on your and the furnitures height might be way more comfortable, to prep things. I have one huge chopping board on the counter top next to the stove and the rest is just taken over by appliances or clutter if I dont clean vigilantly which really brings the living room down
You're not coming to my house? After all the time I've spent with you, learning from you, laughing at your jokes? Hahahaha! You actually said Salt Lake City mommy blogger? Too funny.
Over the range microwaves are for those of us that live in 1950s houses with tiny kitchens. There's literally no other place to put it and I need my microwave.
I really don't love my over the range microwave. The ventilation is pretty poor and just results in a lot of splatter being shot up onto the cabinet doors above it
Hi Nick. I use my microwave multiple times a day. It is a must have appliance for me. That said, I agree that over the range is not the best place for it.
I certainly HOPE over-the-stove microwaves are on their way out! I cannot imagine the number of emergency-room burns I will avoid by relegating that particular appliance to a safer location. They're on the Never, Ever List for a reason.
Integrated appliances have been the norm in Germany for decades :-). Let's face it - since the majority of households over here consist of one or two occupants (together 79%), who needs such a huge Side by Side fridge?
*Integrated Appliances* . Yes Please! A friend did a major kitchen reno, and while she did go with some lovely high end appliances, those stainless steel rectangles just kill the vibe. She put in a banquette, also lovely, but the chandelier isn't centered over the table and drives me nuts. A paneled fridge, dishwasher and microwave drawer make the "uglies" disappear. I keep my microwave stashed in a cabinet below my wall oven and my toaster oven stashed in the cabinet above it. My galley kitchen can't afford to lose valuable real estate. You bet I have a small lamp in that ugly corner where the fridge is. I always do some small vignette there and attach an art piece to the expose side of the fridge with command strips 😁.
Not just a kitchen trend, but I think ribbed/ fluted/ reeded everything is going to look very early 2020s in the future. I don't think ribbed furniture will ever go out because it's gorgeous and classic, but in the future we'll know a picture is from 2022 or 2023 when we see multiple fluted furniture pieces
I’m with you on everything until you got to the microwave. Our beach house kitchen is very compact and it works over the range. We had a built in - a financial and repair nightmare. And we use the microwave all the time.
Speaking of moody - I have a new fascination with copper counters & sinks. Unsealed so they stain, mellow, darken & age with time. Bonus - they are anti-bacterial.
I waitressed for IHOP in the 1980's. The pass counter was unsealed copper that the cooks were constantly polishing. Your clothing that rubs against the "patina" will be stained black and dark green. Copper patina looks the same as accumulated grime. You really want that in your Kitchen?
@@notbill08hmmm - the one I used didn’t pass on stains - I wonder if the IHOP one had a problem with what they were polishing it with…? Good thing to research, thanks.
@@notbill08and the patina didn’t look grimy - just deep & aged. The owner cleaned it & the copper sink with dish soap & water. Sometimes lemon & baking soda. Hard to think of an anti-bacterial surface as grimy. It was lovely- but that’s just a matter of taste. I also like knowing it can be recycled if/when I need to change it out. 😊
I have never liked the microwave over the stove look. It always looked cheap and low end. It also seemed dangerous to take hot food out of an appliance that is, for the most part, near your face. What if the hot mitt slips or you have a medical episode and the hot food falls towards your body/face? I still have a microwave tucked in a corner that is unseen unless you enter the kitchen and turn around. I use it to heat my 17 year old dog's meals and reheat food. That's all. Once the dog departs the microwave may be donated to charity.

I can't imagine my microwave anywhere else. It was a selling point when I bought my condo; not having to buy one and waste counter space.
Maybe Samsung can design a Frame-style microwave, like they did with televisions. Then, the OTR microwave might look like a work of art.
"Weird overstays its welcome." Ain't that the truth!
Nick has the 'gift of the gab" who else would we all listen to nonstop for a half hour and enjoy every minute
Renovate the kitchen every ten years??? What universe do you live in?
My ten year (almost 10 years ago!) consisted of painting the oak cabinets. Ivory uppers, soft blue gray lowers, and the cheapest cabinet and drawer pulls I could find. Paint on the walls, hung some art. Done! Love it, not looking to change any time soon.
Yes not realistic.
I love the way you discuss trends - talking about practicality and real use as well as what dates a look.
For the Coffee station, you could change a few things and the name to tea station if you don't drink coffee.
🫖🍵 Yes , please !
My girlfriend and I would love to have a designer come and help us 😩
why dont you think for yourself and do what you enjoy.
OTR - something to bang your head on while cooking!
So glad to say I have artwork in my new kitchen and my small sections of open shelves holds my teas, coffees, plants and a few special pieces.
Happy Canada Day 🇨🇦
How the hell are you banging your head on an OTR microwave while cooking? This reminds me of those dramatic informercials.
@@vacuumblink2300 I'm 5'9". My exhaust hood is at 5'10" and definitely more powerful than a fan with an OTR.
I dont have quite enough room for a lamp on my counters. Rather have the extra space to work
I had Tuscan decor in my kitchen & livingroom for 12 years.
Thx!
I like your comments on white kitchens, I have three white kitchens all look clean.
Aren't you confusing "radiation" with "magnetic fields"? BTW, I am a Chernobyl survivor, last time I counted my toes was still 10.
@@caibo666 I'm not an expert. I'm just going by what the experts call it, and what the FDA website says.
Yes, I live in Southern California, aka earthquake country, which provides another good reason to avoid open shelving.
Lol my moms White Kitchen would say other words 🤣 that kitchen is the most cleanest things I’ve ever seen!
I'd love one of these videos but for bathroom trends
Yes! I wonder what Nick thinks about those listello tiles . . .
Agree on everything.. but no microwave ? … we did a drawer microwave in the island … is probably what we use the most
I like this one.
'I'm never going to come to your home'. Not going to lie, I've imagined you coming to my house to point out all the atrocities 😂
"Most of your stuff is ugly." Ha! Oh man, you always make me laugh so hard! 😝😂
Great video and tips as i'm about to embark on kitchen and bathroom renovations - i'm with you never been a fan of the open shelves
I would argue that that sort of storage solutions would be more important in open kitchens and especially so livingroom-kitchens (dunno if these are common aboard but basically every apartement with less than two bedrooms has a shared kitchen-living room in finland)
You dont actually need more than a meter or so of counter top space in kitchen if even that if you use an actual table, which depending on your and the furnitures height might be way more comfortable, to prep things.
Too funny.
I like the open shelf concept in someone else’s kitchen, but not my own.
Over the range microwaves are for those of us that live in 1950s houses with tiny kitchens. There's literally no other place to put it and I need my microwave.
I really don't love my over the range microwave. The ventilation is pretty poor and just results in a lot of splatter being shot up onto the cabinet doors above it
Fun video, Nick! Have an awesome weekend!
What about white cabinets with matte black countertops?
I have a separate little shelf for my microwave. I wouldn’t be able to reach an over the range microwave.
I am so surprised about these microwaves above the stove. It seems to be an American thing, I've never seen that in Germany or Europe where I live 😮😄
I want open shelving to go away as well, Nick. 🙌
I would love to see olive wood veneer over maple hardwood cabinets.
Open shelving = dust = to much work for me 😂… but if it works for you I like that for you 👍
*Integrated Appliances* .
Im honestly so happy white kitchens are out. Please put some personality in your house!!
You are hilarious. 😂 Great video, thanks!
How about a floor mirror in your kitchen if you have room?
Not just a kitchen trend, but I think ribbed/ fluted/ reeded everything is going to look very early 2020s in the future. I don't think ribbed furniture will ever go out because it's gorgeous and classic, but in the future we'll know a picture is from 2022 or 2023 when we see multiple fluted furniture pieces
Happy Canada Day!
Question, does anyone think it would look odd to hang a security mirror in the living room? Like high up above windows? Thanks 🥰
I’m with you on everything until you got to the microwave. Our beach house kitchen is very compact and it works over the range. We had a built in - a financial and repair nightmare. And we use the microwave all the time.
My kitchen has no cabinets, upper or lower! None. No dishwasher, no countertops. No backsplash. No drawers. Obviously no over range.
I love Seed! Its really amazing
Open shelving is not feasible in an earthquake prone location.
Yeah, when I’m cooking I don’t want a microwave 6” away from my head either.
The smaller the tile, the more grout to keep clean.
I’m with you. Coffee is the best. I have a coffee bar.
I was hoping Nick would discuss waterfall countertops. Is that still a thing or does it scream 2010s RUclipsr???
Okay, you’re right that it’s ugly, but if I didn’t have my OTR microwave I wouldn’t have room for one at all lol
Love your videos❤😊
13:33 I'm sorry I have this too. 😭
White kitchen are timeless, moody kitchens are a trend. Be careful with going with trends if you don’t plan to stay a long time in your home.
No no no I love white kitchen I want to renovate my current 1 and I want white and my top to be butcher block is it fine.
Swoonworthy ‘Lone Fox’ new kitchen well worth a look!
Anyone there?!?
