I saw Wilco perform the album in full on Sunday, and this was the song that's been stuck in my head. Suffice to say I was delighted when I saw that it was the song they picked to play on TV
So great. Wilco getting fired from its label for unapologetically making this record -- the record they wanted to make, just for them to ultimately sell it back to the same parent company and then the record becoming a nearly-universally accepted masterpiece has been a story I will never be able to get enough of. YHF always puts me in a good place.
YHF was a vindication of the "Summerteeth" album. I have both. And they are of an creative arc that stretched between 3 to 4 albums before label involvement. It is why Wilco is indie now real shit.
This was the album I most associated with the aftermath of 9/11. Two weeks before 9/11, I had just signed up for a 7 year commitment to the U.S. Navy, so I had a lot to think about. These guys got me through it.
I wish Americans would stop acting like 9/11 was this international tragedy that eclipses everything else. There have been so many incidents since that are just as horrific, but because it happened to "big, strong, Exceptional" US, it's the worst thing in history... Since Pearl Harbor of course. Get over yourselves and look at the world around you.
Been there and went thru that. My albums - Journey, "Evolution" Robbin Thompson Band, "Two B's Please", Chic, "Real People", AC/DC, "Back In Black", The Pretenders, "Pretenders" [S/T]), The B-52's, "The B-52's" [S/T], Elvis Costello & The Attractions, "Get Happy!!!", Devo, "Freedom Of Choice", Black Sabbath, "Heaven & Hell". And ALL came out between 1979 - 1980.
When I saw they were performing with a strings section I just assumed it would be Jesus, etc. I didn't think they could pull this one off so well, but they killed it.
They have been performing this song for 20 years and it always sounds amazing. I don’t know why are you saying that you did not think they could pull this off. 🤷🏻♂️
Wonderful. Kudos Tweedy & co. Thank you for this album, and for all of the memories in between. Always reliable for the good & bad. Keep on chooglin' y'all ✌️✨
Saw them in concert in Utah shortly after this album came out. I think this song has only gotten better. Would love to see the whole album performed live!
I can’t believe I’ve been listening to this masterpiece of an album for 20 years. Every track a clever ear worm that lingers with you long after the album is over.
One of my favorite bands and I grew up during the golden age of R&R seeing and hearing all the good bands. I describe the music of Wilco as layers of sound. And yes I am a boomer.
This band and Drive-By Truckers are the best things going in Rock music at this moment. Both have the ability to bring in generations of folks together grooving to good music.
It's my father's voice trailing off... Sailors sailing off in the morning For the air-conditioned rooms At the top of the stairs His jaw's been broken His bandages wrapped too tight His fangs have been pulled And I really want to see you tonight There's bourbon on the breath Of the singer you love so much He takes all his words from the books That you don't read anyway His jaw's been broken His bandages wrapped too tight His fangs have been pulled And I really want to see you tonight Someone ties a bow In my backyard to show me love My voice is climbing walls Smoking and I want love My jaw's been broken My heart is wrapped in ice My fangs have been pulled And I really want to see you tonight It makes no difference to me How they cried all over overseas When it's hot in the poor places tonight I'm not going outside.
It's cool how rhythmic that droning beep is. It's on the offbeat until finally fading out for a solid minute of the song. Impressive subtlety and great timing. They were really able to use that ominous machine beeping as an off-beat metronome. Really cool!
The build-up of the last bit always gets me. I was really hoping they would give it a more grand and appropriate ending, but I guess I can't fault them for wanting to stay as close to the original as possible, so I respect them for that.
Beautifully done, and not an easy one to pull off live with all of the discord at the end. Reminds of Via Chicago in that respect. Colbert's a rag, but at least his crew got the audio spot on. Genuinely don't think I've ever heard a late night performance sound quite that good. The mix was stellar.
its like the click was too fast. This is one of their best songs (one of the best songs of that decade really), but it feels rushed here. Haven’t seen any other footage from the anniversary tour so I ought to see if this is just how they’re doing it.

Wait, so we can see this wonderful moment in history, but we can’t see the flaming lips performing in bubbles during the pandemic!? Hell that might be another network, I don’t know, but I do have to say that it’s incredibly frustrating
My favorite band, my favorite album, my favorite song, damn I love these guys
Same here... forever
Perfect way to end my night!! They are my forever favorite band...
And after this came A Ghost is Born! What a fallow-up!
That piano part is absolutely sublime!
Great band. Monumental album. Strange choice. I loved it.
I'm trying to figure out if I like it and how much.
Maybe it's because it's the one that ends with the "Yankee/Hotel/Foxtrot" audio cue. It's also f'ing majestic

The documentary is riveting. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart. Hopefully I still have my DVD...
Stunning. Remarkable. It’s like hearing it for the first time all over again, and I’m still mesmerized. Thank you, Wilco.
This band is a national treasure. ❤️🔥
national treasure, indeed
I'd say they're an international treasure, saw them here in Italy three years ago and it was incredible ❤ ♥ 😍
@@betinnas83 yes. And they’re ours as Americans.
@@jeffhogue36 They're everybody's as Earthlings!

One of my favorite bands, albums, songs!!
I never heard of 'em before Picachu, but I like it a lot! That's going right in my "crate". (remember record crates...)
Brought tear to my by the end. So good! Truly they’ve deepened live…a lot of heart there.
I love seeing Jeff playing the actual instruments used in the original recording. I’ve missed him playing that Gibson. Makes a big difference.
It makes no difference to me
@@kylome5925 well played lol
Poor Places on national TV...only Wilco.
I was thinking the same thing 😂
What kind of music is that???
@@lucianolorenzo8395 a very good one.
if you think about it, they are probably the best band to be playing this song.
I don’t get it?
Brought a tear to my eye. Such a defining album for me.

This was the album I most associated with the aftermath of 9/11. Two weeks before 9/11, I had just signed up for a 7 year commitment to the U.S. Navy, so I had a lot to think about. These guys got me through it.

I almost felt like the album predicted it, weirdly. Im not the only person that felt that way, either.
This is such a weird and wonderful song, like snatches of emotions in a dream
One of the most beatles-like songs of Wilco, i really feel the dark-psych pop influence from songs like SFF... Great stuff from Wilco!!!
When I saw they were performing with a strings section I just assumed it would be Jesus, etc.

the shows in NYC were killer. check out the badass aizuri quartet who played with them in the city
kids get u a band that’s this dedicated to the sound. love this band forever.
Jeff's voice on this anniversary tour is nothing short of a revelation. God, dude, please stick with this vibe and record something new.

I saw them live last night at Auditorium theater for the third time in my life. Favorite band of all time

Amen!
My favorite track from YHF - what a great surprise! Amazing performance
And too think I was so disappointed when I first heard this album twenty years ago....... A absolute masterpiece and a big part of my life .
Haha. It took me about 5 years before this sunk in for me. Same with Kid A
It's my father's voice trailing off...
Sailors sailing off in the morning
For the air-conditioned rooms
At the top of the stairs
His jaw's been broken
His bandages wrapped too tight
His fangs have been pulled
And I really want to see you tonight
There's bourbon on the breath
Of the singer you love so much
He takes all his words from the books
That you don't read anyway
His jaw's been broken
His bandages wrapped too tight
His fangs have been pulled
And I really want to see you tonight
Someone ties a bow
In my backyard to show me love
My voice is climbing walls
Smoking and I want love
My jaw's been broken
My heart is wrapped in ice
My fangs have been pulled
And I really want to see you tonight
It makes no difference to me
How they cried all over overseas
When it's hot in the poor places tonight
I'm not going outside.
That last stanza is powerful. Makes you wonder how linked it was to the events surrounding 9/11

So excited to see this live!!
I've always seen Poor Places As Wilco's "A Day In The Life"
Such a great record.

I got chills watching/hearing this. They did a great job recreating the song. I miss the version of Wilco that made this album.
one the greatest, tightest bands ever.second only to the Band
The closest thing to a modern day beatles. In terms of being creative, innovative and great songwriting.
This! I’ve been saying the same thing for several years and I always get funny looks when I say it. If you know, you know. 🤷♂️
Modern day Beatles, Beach Boys, and Bob Dylan rolled into one plus their other influences
Stunning! Totally faithful to the record, and not at all like the times I've seen them do it live.
thanks band and colbert x a million! luvluvluv ya'll! read those replies cuz U R LUVVED!
God I love this album so much, even 20 years later!
i always listen to this when working
Amazing song
Always in awe
My favorite version of this song. I like it better than the studio version. A little more drama.
Wilco will you love, baby!
greatest band of the last 25 years

Not only did they pick a song other than Jesus etc, they chose probably the ballsiest deep cut on the album to play on late night tv
