There are great support groups on FB. The Acid Watchers diet is nothing short of spectacular. I started with the support group Acid/Gerd/Reflux... It's a whole new world. I had an event recently, then 2 months of bile reflux, now pepsin reflux. The pepsin receptors are magnets throughout the upper body and cause relentless misery. When we are told a low-acid diet, it is because acid foods and protein activate the pepsin. You don't want that to happen! I'm about to embark on an acid watcher diet. I know your son can get thru this - others have.

There is a much easier way. Just drink a couple glasses of water and jump up and down for a couple minutes to jiggle the stomach back down to its normal position. No harm or cost in giving this approach a good try
Forty years ago, I did an activity which forced part of my stomach up through or past the diaphragm. It was a couple months later that I suddenly started having severe stomach pains. I was initially misdiagnosed by a doctor as having ulcers. It was a couple of years of misery before I realized that the doctor was wrong and I had gastric reflux disease, or GERD. Often, GERD happens naturally without a clear cause. More so with older people. Normally, the esophagus sphincter and the diaphragm sphincter muscles line up and reinforce each other. If part of the stomach is pushed or pulled up through the diaphragm, the sphincter muscles don’t line up and stomach acid can more easily leak into the esophagus, causing GERD.
Other people suggest drinking warm or hot water to relax the muscles, I would suggest cold water so the heavy water will stay in the stomach longer. I would also suggest doing it first thing in the morning so the water won’t affect the digestion process on other food. It may take a repeat on a few successive days for the esophagus to adapt to the new longer length for the stomachs in its new proper position. I would repeat the process anytime I got heartburn or acid taste in my mouth. I have been trouble free for over 35 years now. I later learned of a gastroenterologist in Michigan who recommends this process also; maybe others now also.
The body needs strong hydrochloric acid in the stomach to trigger the esophageal sphincter to close, to break down bulk foods generally, and to specifically separate protein into the amino acid components to be effectively absorbed into the blood stream from the small intestines for use by the human body. Most or all GERD medicines block the production of or neutralize the hydrochloric acid which then interferes with protein digestion and interferes with esophageal sphincter closing. Both of those actions are counterproductive.

Bob and Brad, I too seek PT for strengthening the sphincter that relaxes (from age, diet, etc) allowing pepsin to float up and GERD, w chest pain, breathing issues. In my case, I think slouching over a screen and little exercise is major cause. What exercises, foods, beverages, supplements heal & STRENGTHEN the sphincter, even regenerate? I am finding a community of peers who suffer in agony. Please do this topic. If one can strengthen pelvic floor muscles, then certainly it can be achieved for the esophageal sphincter!. Drs DO NOT HELP - they offer surgery, dehumanizing pills with side effects. Put control back in our hands with PT solutions we can do.

I'm laughing a bit at "doctors don't help". I've seen so many doctors over the years, for problems they almost universally dismissed at first that have since snowballed. No preventative info given. And now, they keep telling me things without explaining anything, telling me there's nothing to do, deferring to other doctors and specialists instead of helping me themsevles while I'm there... only a handful have even properly tried to help me.

This is interesting. Most doctors I see here on RUclips say acid reflux is from having not enough acid.

    • @maryknight7969
      @maryknight7969 2 года назад +8

You need acid to digest, of course. One problem is that if the sphincter is relaxed, pepsin will seep / float up and attach and eat esophageal/throat/head tissues! Pepsin is activated by even small amounts of acid found in foods, and that is the rationale for not eating acid foods, bec of course no food acid could approach the gastric acidity. It is a very very complex issue, not as simple, and can't be dismissed. Other foods, such as garlic, relax the sphincter and the pepsin gas floats up, entrenching itself on pepsin receptors, I have learned. Such misery. Other "healthy" foods cause gas in the gut, which leads to pressure on the sphincter, and again allowing pepsin and GERD, with lasting detriment. Being overweight puts pressure on the sphincter. I did sit-ups - did that also harm me by putting pressure on that valve? No, it is not a simple answer. Many swear by a low-acid diet. That doesn't mean to eliminate marginally acidic foods, just the most acidic, or ones that become acidic in the digestive process. I've been using apple cider vinegar as a digestive aid, but I have pepsin reflux so horribly I can't see straight. If you have this issue, you owe it to yourself to check out the support groups on FB. There is so much (free) knowledge, support, sharing. People don't want to be on PPIs or go to doctors.

Eat through it NO MATTER WHAT when your weight shoots down ***. Olive oil, half-n-half, will keep your weight acceptable. It's hard to keep my weight up as well. You MUST eat. Eat green beans, it gives the acid something to work on. Starchy bananas are supposed to put weight on, and meat too. For me, olive oil and half n half saved my life - I looked like a starved person until I figured it out. I also take sips of salt water, which seems to stimulate my digestion and appetite, get things moving, and I'm able to take food in. Citrucel fiber drink helps at times to keep things moving, thereby allowing me to take in more. Sometimes even though I ate a lot, I still did not see a weight gain. I just keep at it. It's a balance, because your system is sensitive and putting too much food in there puts stress on the GI tract. I drank olive oil straight out of the bottle when I was very underweight. I drank Ensure for vitamins and extra calories. *** Eat no matter what, explained -- there are times that "bowel rest" is also important as a natural way to stimulate things. On some days, I'd have "nourishing liquids", such as soup with added olive oil, saltine crackers, yogurt. Hope this helps.

@@brisetta The Cancer risk is real but a ENT doc who has to do esophageal Cancer operations said that the Cancer link is from observational studies, i.e. there is no direct link, which can mean that other factors are involved not just taking a PPI, the problem we have is that if you dont take the PPI and allow reflux then you are headed towards Esophgeal Cancer.
From what I understand its not only acid that refluxes but Bile AND pepsin, we have certain receptors near the throat that get aggravated if pepsin is present or refluxed and damage occurs, my point is that you can still get damage even if we take PPI's, PPI's stop acid but not bile and pepsin I believe.
Where theres a will theres a way, you can reduce damage caused by pepsin by eating higher on the alkaline scale, as soon as you go under 4ph the acidic nature of food triggers pepsin production so eat higher ph foods or more alkaline, things like watermelon, papaya and if we are going to live with this Cancer thing hanging over our heads then take preventative measures beforehand, i.e. pre empt cancer forming, by fasting, going on juice fasts, limiting red meat or burnt meat or junk foods or fast foods, avoid sugar and processed foods, not sure what to do about bile, maybe you have gallbladder issues and liver issues, in that case eat bitter veggies such as Arugula, lettuce, beets help absorb bile and transport it our of the colon so you dont re-absorb old bile, hope you had a nice Christmas, I have lot more info for you if you want to chat about this ;)

Research what foods cause acid reflux, learn proper food combining, don't drink water just before, during and until you have digested your food. Drinking warm lemon or ACV and ginger water up to 30 minutes before meals to be well hydrated and better absorb nutrients and don't lie down right after meals and ideally have finished eating 4 hours before going to bed.
A few bricks below the head of your bed or inclined sleeping also helps.
Grains amd other cooked starches, fat, animal products, coffee, cacao are acid forming.

I am using two tablets per day. Most times my reflux stops but I am very uncomfortable and occasionally I still have reflux. My Dr is going to do gastroscopy and colonoscopy to check for a hernia. But I have terrible feeling in my throat like food is sitting there and I have strange movements in my colon. I am bloated and feel full but get dizzy and always feel uncomfortable when I eat. Help.

      Research further than this pharmacist!!!
PPI are EXTREMELY toxic full of heavy metals!

Yes, apple cider vinegar with a little water while a make my meal. Don’t drink a lot with your meal or eat too much at one time. ACV works for me🍎🍏🍎🍏🍎🍏🍎
