I actually found Heather and some other peeps doing this about a year ago and set up an Etsy print on demand store. I put a lot of work into it just to realize that I had missed the bubble on being able to achieve what Heather did. Etsy is SOOOOO saturated now with print on demand, I don’t believe there’s a way to grow these days to what she did unless you’re willing to pay for ads and put in a LOT of work creating hundreds of awesome designs and mock-ups. This was a brilliant idea in 2020, but the ship has sailed imo.

Print on demand is decades old. I'm surprised it made a real come back, Esty must have been pushing it back into a thing again. I remember the earliest of internet days you could design T-shirts and mugs online and the company would do the rest and ship it out. Weird to see it as a fad again, it was totally saturated and old long long before Etsy.
I’ve done a lot of ads and made 2 non-family sales in 5 months. That was because I put my store on a 50% off sale for one day. So I lost money.
I love crafts but my passion is oil painting. I could possibly make a tiny bit of money selling my pet portraits but with downloadable art computer or AI generated art I can’t compete. I was looking for something that was passive, allowing me to paint more and not work until I’m 100.
I had an Etsy shop for over a year and it was SO much work. I loved knowing how happy people were getting my handmade gifts. It was really hard to compete with people flooding their shops with hundreds of listings that were print on demand and not handmade :(
I feel like these type of print/drop shipping shops are ruining Etsy. It used to be a fun place to shop for handmade gifts, but I find myself shopping there less now.

This breaks my heart. I’ve been following Shelby for over a decade and I’m a hand painted / handmade artist. This really hurts our community & platforming this business model makes it harder for us to deliver handmade quality items to the consumer. I feel like Etsy needs to be better at cracking down on print on demand shops and should be more focused on what they used to be. It’s definitely a cool concept and not knocking her for making her bag or Shelby for making an interesting video.
The reality is that Etsy is a capitalist company like any other. Their main priority is making money, not supporting small businesses with handmade pieces. They may have started out that way in order to be able to carve out a space for themselves in the e-commerce world but it wouldn’t make sense for them to turn their back on literally millions of dollars by cracking down on these print on demand sellers.
Etsy hasn't been what they used to be in like 10+ years. Yes, it's sad, but it's the truth. At least these are actually designed by this person and not just mass produced junk from China.
To be fair Shelby has been a sellout for YEARS. I unsubscribed from her a long time ago and see her every once and a while so I take a look at what content she is making, it's still the same. All she does is sponsorships and most of them she doesn't even believe in, she just wants to get paid. I don't think that is right, and I agree it does really hurt the smaller folk by platforming a profit driven large corp and making it more difficult for "local" real people.
Though money is everything it’s annoying in a way because the Entire purpose of ETSY was for handmade goods. As both a seller and business it definitely changed the website… if I wanted a screenshot shirt from a company I’d have just ordered it and now who knows who’s making what. But, good for her for tripling her income

I'm a professional graphic designer/illustrator and while I don't sell on Etsy I've found success just selling on my own independent website and then using organic TikTok/IG content to drive sales. All my apparel and prints are dropshipped. All my other products are digital products so I don't have to do any order fulfillment on my part. I must say this type of thing is incredibly hard to do if you don't have design/marketing skills. I just did a halloween collection that did several thousand in sales which was awesome, but I've been building up these skills for several years.
that's what we think...make videos to drive sales even to Etsy at first. There's a sea of printables YouTUbe videos...all clickbait
Yeah, these people just lie to get people to click on their videos, then click on their affiliate links, and their over priced courses. I feel bad for anyone following them.
And people wonder why Etsy is dying lol. These print-on-demand and drop-shipping folks are running it to the ground.
Etsy killed itself. I love talking about this because it all started years ago when they first opened to 3rd party sellers to compete with Amazon. This means half the products now are essentially drop-shipped products, which may or may not be ethical depending on who you are. Around the same time, the POD started so that made it worse. Then when CANVA really took off probably around 2016 that's when we saw major saturation and in the past 4 years Etsy increased fees for people selling on there so a lot of artisans have had to move off the platform, but only after they built up their social platform.
It just sucks because I don't think we have a single artisan platform now to source handcrafted materials and goods and many shops don't want to deal with the merch process for it because if you want to scale you have to be able to quickly get the product to the site and to do that you can't have it take 2 weeks to verify the products.
Anyway, I've worked in SEO for about. 10 years and now I work for a large e-comm site and it's crazy how much it's changed, but I just wish some RUclipsrs would put more work into their videos to understand the market segment a bit more and how truly difficult this is. Like if Shelby had said that 99% of Etsy shops fail.., but this one succeeded and here's why then I think the video would be way more interesting to watch.

What a crazy world that one can make triple the amount with designing and selling t-shirts rather than working as a so much needed health care worker, especially such specialized job as a MRI technologist 😑That said, I'm happy for her that it works out so well for her 😊

Unless things have changed since I last used print-on-demand, it basically amount to something like ink jet printing on a shirt. The shirts will quickly fade with washing and the per unit cost is very high. The best quality shirts are done via screen printing. You need to buy a larger quantity, but you can specify high quality all cotton shirts and the overall per unit cost will be much lower. Of course, you'll have to do your own fulfillment. I know a few content producers who have theirs screen printed and do their own fulfillment and they say even with the extra overhead, they are earning far more than they could have with print-on-demand. It just seems like another example of giving the customer less for more.
Dye-sublimation printing (where the dye actually seeps into the surface of the garment instead of sitting on top of it) lasts longer, but it can only be done on white garments. Most people who buy from these on-demand outlets understand they are buying a garment that won't last very long.
@@TeddyLeppard What people understand is an assumption and I don't believe that to be true. Maybe some people do, but I doubt if most even know what on-demand printing is, or even screen printing for that matter. I was always under the assumption that goods on Etsy were things that people crafted themselves. Until I saw this video, I never suspected that Etsy merchandise was print-on-demand. Sellers should disclose this to buyers, if they already don't.
If I'm honest I don't think most people who do print on demand care if it last, especially those doing it as a side hustle.

These people are scumbags. There are quite a few Etsy gurus on here, including this woman, who teach people to buy a research tool, with their affiliate link, of course, then, basically, steal a best selling design, just make a tiny minor change, put it on a mug or T-shirt, two of the worst things to sell, because they’re so over saturated, and you will make money. They just want people to buy something with their affiliate links and to purchase their courses. I feel bad for people who listen to them, because their comment sections are full of people failing miserably, because they followed their garbage information. I don’t know who the woman is, who runs this channel, that we are commenting on, it’s the first video, I have seen, of hers, but I wouldn’t promote any of these people, because, either, they don’t know how Etsy works or, they do, but are lying to people, so they buy their high priced courses, but they don’t really want the competition. It’s sad how many people get duped by them, because they’re women, they think these gurus actually care about them.
The quality of Shelby's video is outstanding, I can't really compare any other RUclipsr to her.

I think this is SO important for people to realize. Even with a lot of macroeconomic uncertainty (and consumers cutting back on their discretionary spending), Etsy revenue grew 7% last quarter. People will cut back on some things, but a lot of Etsy creators have built really resilient brands that have super strong loyalty. Great subject to cover... not to mention the awesome video quality!!
This is pretty cool Shelby! Couple things...1, this is a probably time suck for the person getting into it, especially on startup/first year, etc and you don't know how/what you're really doing yet to "find your audience/products", etc. 2. To do this, you'll need a creative side or need to bring that out in yourself. For me, that's never been a big thing, so even though this can be/is lucrative....there is a lot of hard work behind what you've shown. I laugh when I see ads saying "Oh, I just created this little amazon business and it's making me $500k, but what do they take home and did they create a business that makes others money?" LOL
See, that is the problem with these people, these Etsy gurus, like the woman she showed here. There are tons of them on here. They’re really not that creative, or what they show isn’t creative. All they want to do with their channels is to sell affiliate links to a bunch of things and sell expensive courses. They basically tell you to buy a research tool, with their affiliate link, because they’re so generous to offer it. 🙄🙄🙄 Then, they tell you to basically steal a best selling design, just make a minor change on it. They tell people to sell t-shirts and mugs, two of the worst things to try to get into, because they’re so saturated, they never promote anything else. I mean, they are horrible to teach people. They, either, don’t really know how Etsy works, or, they do, but they really don’t want the competition. People are foolish to follow them. Etsy nearly doubled with stores in 2020-2021, and that is how these people became successful, they got lucky. Sometimes they show people how to make a design, and their designs are so bad….because they’re teaching people to fail, because they don’t want the competition, really. I really feel bad for the people who follow them, because they are failing, by following them, and so they will buy their courses, that are overpriced and massive garbage. It’s sad.

The idea of this hustle is good, it's just sad that it had to cannibalize the purpose of Etsy. Etsy used to = handmade. Now its just like Shein.
What about returns? Who handles that? Who absorbs the cost of breakage? Coffee mugs/glass can shatter in transit. Items get lost. Who handles those issues?

Is that why most of the people following their garbage advice are failing. These people are just out here telling people to buy a research tool and design tool, with their affiliate links, of course, then, basically, go steal a best selling design, make a minor change, and if all Elise fails, buy their expensive course. Their information is garbage, and most of the people in the comments are failing. Sad really, that anyone would follow their advice, it’s garbage. They don’t really want the competition, they just want people to purchase their course, their affiliate links, etc.

I had an Etsy shop about 13 years ago and it was really successful very quickly. I paid the advertising fee Etsy charged to get my shop out there and after my first order and positive review it took off. The only reason I closed it was because the bag company I ordered from were always running out of the basic colors. I also reached the limit where they would start taxing so I can’t say if I would still have made money after that. But for what I did in a short amount of time, it was lucrative. I embroidered initials or names on clutches/ crossbody bags. I’m sure now things are much different.

great video Shelby! it is a great business model indeed, however what stops me is the amount of work for SMM and also monthly fees which in CAD are quite a lot (say if to pay to printify or other printers, shopify, design apps and libraries etc).

Don’t follow these peoples advice….I mean this Etsy guru and all the others. They “teach,” if you want to call it that, very bad information. You can be successful doing this, but don’t follow their bad advice.
Thank you for for being transparent and showing actual profit. Total revenue does not equal money in the bank, haha. Be sure to note: Etsy will be taking their piece of the pie which was not shown in the breakdown. This will eat into your margins vs. just selling on your own platform (Shopify, etc). Esty can bring in the eyeballs (customers), but its starting to become a very saturated platform for POD products.

I was also doing Etsy print on demand using Printify, which I really liked doing but then it seemed that shipping ended up being so much more than I expected. It was nice not having to do the work other than making or licensing designs, but I found I prefer doing reselling on Poshmark, where the shipping is much more reasonable and they always use the USPS priority mail. I wish Printify would have used the USPS priority mail, I would probably kept doing it but they used more expensive shipping. So now I source items by going to the goodwill outlet and reselling them. I do have to do the shipping myself but I really enjoy thrifting so I don’t mind the shipping part. You can thrift items for so cheap at the outlet (bins) and it’s a lot of fun.

Be careful if you decide to start this. Etsy is shutting down POD shops. I think they're really trying their best to get back to their roots of true, handmade items.
my friend did numbers on Etsy way back since 2012 or so. She still earns nicely from it.
My Etsy furniture business has taken a huge hit the last couple years because of dropshipped chairs and other furniture from overseas. Brutal experience I’m going through. May have to close business

Isn’t this exactly braking the rules of Etsy? Still there are so many doing it.

Since 2013 or so one is allowed to use an external production partner, which is not allowed to outsource that work and it must be disclosed in the listing.

Etsy automation and other e-commerce automation is a way to go to make it all "passive" if one can afford the out of pocket upfront costs.
I love these types of videos but would love if people addressed issues like social and environmental impacts of the business. For example, Gildan is a well known company that produces shirts with cheap textile with cheap labour from developing countries. Yes, she does make money, but at a cost for others. Would love to hear if that was considered, because there are dozens of side hustles that exist to sale things just for selling's sake.
Something I noticed that takes a big chunk of revenue is taxes. If you have a 30% profit then etsy takes a chunk and the end of the year you pay Uncle Sam what does that leave you?

@@carochan86 Having to pay taxes is a given. The amount will vary depending on where the seller lives, their expenses, etc. The purpose of this video was to highlight the business concept.

Hardly passive income, there are thousands of hours gone into that business by the owner.
And so? In a 40 hour work week, you will work for 2,080 hours.

@ShelbyChurch 6.5% of the sales price to Etsy. 3.5% of the price + 25 cents to process the transaction. 20 cents at every sale to "re-list"...and interestingly enough, I did not see that accounted for in her financial statement she showed. You should ask her to clarify where she accounted for that.
@@ShelbyChurch I wondered why this woman would not want to be fully transparent about the Etsy fees and such, but it took two button clicks to realize she sells courses online on how to do what she does. Which as you even said yourself about that guy that does the same for airbnb hosts, a red flag that the people may not be truthful about how much money they make.

Tell me honestly, has anyone here made it from scratch on Etsy? I've been trying to make t-shirt designs for a year, and I've only been able to sell a couple of pieces. And yeah, I didn't have an advertising budget.

if you're selling on etsy, its not passive. Its a job.
It’s semi passive. You have to do with the messaging and returns. You could always hire someone to do it if you are getting to that point though

Maybe the Hospital or Medical Facility should pay more should pay more then?
There are plenty of Agency's in the medical field that can find staff to fill those positions.
@@carochan86 I agree, but I don´t think hospitals can pay medical staff except doctors as much as e-commerce does. The personnel costs of a hospital or private practice would be too high. Now these agencies can still find staff. If more and more people look for more lucrative options in e-commerce (as well as influencer jobs or remote working jobs) - (non-essential jobs) it´s gonna get harder to find skilled people. I booked an MRI (non-emergency situation) in my city recently. I got a spot in March 24. For a mammogram it´s also 6 months on the waiting list - the receptionist told me that they can´t find enough skilled technicians and there´s a general staff shortage. Fewer people want to be trained in these kinds of jobs. Sucks for people who really need medical service.

One of the biggest downsides to Etsy is they take a whopping 20% cut from your revenue.

You're saying money by not having inventory. So you won't be over spending.
If she ordered everything herself, she'd most likely need another person to help her.
So she's saving money on salary.
The only thing she have to worry about, is tax.
I felt like a lot of people are talking about this? They are just talking about it like it's easy where in reality it's still work. Just annoying how there are real artists who take pride in their craft and want to share - whereas this side just tries to make passive income....
