- Change the transmission oil on a 2010 Honda CIvic. The process is the same from 2006 to 2011. The procedure is as follows:
1. Warm up vehicle to operating temperature.
2. Remove drain plug and let transmission drain.
3. Re-insert drain plug.
4. Pour 2.75 quarts of automatic transmission fluid (ATF) into transmission dip stick hole.
5. Test drive vehicle and check for abrupt shifting.
If you transmission shifts abruptly, check the transmission fluid level and add as necessary.
The entire oil change took about 1 hour, and it took about 10 minutes for the vehicle to reach operating temperature, and let it completely drain for 30 minutes
The drain plug should be torqued to 36 ft-lb.

Check the fluid level within 60-90 seconds after turning the engine off

You forget the most important thing when you check the fluid level you need to turn the engine on in order to have the right Reading for the fluid level thank you
nesrin sarofeim .... on these honda’s you actually need to drive the car till it gets to operating temp, then check the fluid with the car off.

On a Honda transmission, you actually check the fluid level with the transmission warmed up and the engine off. But you are right about almost every other vehicle on the road :)
The right fluid is critical in these things. Check your manual to get the specific fluid type. I almost destroyed my 2012 Civic by using Castrol "multi use" ATF fluid. Mine requires H type fluid and WalMart didn't have it in stock so I went with the Castrol. Big mistake. Luckily I noticed a mild shudder between 1st and 2nd starting about a week after I changed the fluid. Drained it and put the H type in. Smooth as silk now

Thanks for the video, I recently changed my ATF using your instructions but using valvoline maxlife ATF. I know people always say only use honda fluids but I've heard good things of valvoline. I guess time will tell to see if it will destroy my transmission lol.
Ive been using Valvoline and Castrol Import for years.... No bad effect... Shifts smoothly

Have you ever done the filter ( 25430-PLR-003 ) and a complete fluid exchange? If I recall correctly only 3 quarts come out when doing it this way and the trans capacity is 6.2 quarts....
Many say to just change the fluid a few times between so many hundreds of miles and your fluid should be very clean.
The filter looks like it’s not fun to change, but not impossible

Mine wasn’t level when draining. Looks like 2.5 quarts drain out. That’s what I put back in and looks correct on dip stick. How often are you changing your fluid?
Change your transmission filter with each fluid change, too.
Measure how much transmission fluid you took out and put that same exact amount in, then adjust from there.
I bought a cheap 5 quart measuring container for $4 to do mine.

Bro my civic's check engine turned on while driving & it went into limp mode (atleast i hope it's limp mode). All fluids look good except for the transmission (it looks black). Should I do a transmission fluid flush at that point? Or is a simple transmission fluid change gonna be enough to get the car running good again?

Need ur Advice please, I put for Civic 2010 1.8 a wrong transmissin oil accendently , I put CVT oil (called Top 1 Formula 1) instead of honda ATF Z1 nd drove for 5 thounand Killometer (5000)
What should I do brother ? nd does this mean the transsmission will die in future even i changed the oil ?

It cannot be changed... It is inside the transmission. You can put an inline filter that you can change if you want to...
@@BLAZEPSI sorry your wrong but there is a filter for the trans fluid. Its a small black canister filter bolted on top of the trans to the back and below the air filter box. Honda P/N is 25430-PLR-003. I have a 2011 Civic EX and changed it twice already. I have over 260k original miles

Generally speaking, yes. I changed mine for the first time at around 68k miles. I bought the car used and wasn't sure if the fluid and filter were ever changed. It was clean but you could tell it was a bit dirty. I figured the filter could be dirty too, so I went ahead and bought a filter at my local Honda dealership. However, just order one off Amazon. It's much cheaper! Part number 25430-PLR-003. In my opinion, it's worth changing the filter every once in a while.
Yes there is one on the transmission oil line and I believe there's one in the transmission oil pan.
Cant I just go for a drive then do this that way the car is already in operating temperature? I hate doing this where I wait for the car to be in operating temperature.
+Alex M I would not only because the service manual does not say to drive it until it is at operating temperature. For this video, I held the gas at 3000 rpm until the fans turned on. Even then it still took about 4 minutes.
Christian Macias I have a thing when it comes to RPMs,it's rare for me to let me car to to 3000 RMPs,when I drive normally accelerate at 2000 RMPs or a little higher depending on traffic,but always below 3000 rpm,when there's no cars I accelerate as slow as possible,heck even at 1500 RPMs.
@@lazertag720 You are driving your car wrong, keeping your revs down can make it very hard on the transmission, don't be worried about your engine revving up a bit, they are meant too and the transmission automatically changes gear to lessen the strain on your engine.

You buy a used car, it's a good idea to change ALL fluids. That would be radiator, engine oil, transmission oil, power steering fluid. It's called cheap insurance. You have to ask yourself, How motivated was the seller to do maintenance knowing they're going to get rid of the vehicle?

If you didn't shift through all the gears before measuring the first time, your transmissions was not full.

That's in the entire system. A drain and fill like this is only about 3 quarts.

William F That is the catalytic converter. The exhaust manifold and catalytic converter is one unit in these cars.

Use only Honda DW1. Some say certain brands can be used, but Hondas are very picky vehicles. I’m going to do my 2010 Civic and no way I’d use anything else.

Hybrid have the CVT. That's what I read on Wikipedia about 8th Gen Civics
It means Continuous Variable Transmission....CVT, Its driven by a metal belt.
What happens if you over fill?

For ur information we only check transmission oil level while start you will not get oil lavel wh off it if car is off but for engine its different

@@juliosanchez933 Look at the colour of the transmission oil , when it's new it's a red colour. In time the colour will change to a brownish colour and then later to a blackish colour. Best to change before it gets to a blackish colour. I change my Transmission oil every 60,ooo km or45,ooo miles. Car engine oil I change every 10,00 KM or 6000 miles. It's the cheapest maintenance you can have
You only changed Half of it . The other half is in the torque converter. so you drained 1/2 and added new oil and now you have a transmission with half old oil and half new. Not a total trans flush.
Whats the difference between a flush and a change. Isn’t there a torque converter that has fluid in it too?
Good idea to drain it. Drive it for a while, 500 miles or wahtever. Change it again. Do that 2 or 3 times total.
@@4drturbo85 Agree. After that a 3 quart change every 30.000 is plenty to keep the fluid fresh and in great shape. Remember Honda oem fluid is now synthetic. DW1.
