We bought three Civics for three children a 99 an 07 and 08. As you know Wonderful cars and fun to drive wonderful gas mileage and pretty easy to work on. I always changed all the fluids for them and taught them how to do it.
You are doing the public a great service with your Channel. You have organised a great deal of content and it is truly a gift. Remember folks to turn your torque wrench back down to about 10 ft lb when not in use
I'm glad you enjoy the channel and that it's helpful! I do appreciate your support
The most decent transmission service to see in a decade
My mom recently gave me her 2008 Civic, with less than 80,000 miles. I did a series of three drain and fills of ATF. Such an easy job, Im surprised most owners neglect it (well, ATF isn't cheap, but then again, it's much cheaper than a new transmission). My car's ATF went from brown, to cherry red .
Wow, a Civic with 80,000 miles on it. You'll have that car for the next 10 years or more. Keep it, regardless of your situation, because it will always be a reliable second car, if not your main car.
@@tigergreg8 it's my main vehicle
@@tigergreg8I have an 07 Civic with 164k miles lmao. It’s running cherry. I change my oil every 4000 miles with Pennzoil High Mileage Platinum Full Synthetic. And Amsoil Transmission with every 35k miles. I recently changed my coolant just a week ago. I do it every 1 and half year.
@@beethoven8256 You treat your vehicle well. You’ll go over 300,000 miles with that.
Bought mine used with 90,000 miles with the trans fluid looking bad without knowing and now it has 92,000 miles on it I had it for 6 months now is it still time to save the transmission? Mine already slips a bit or has a hard time acelerating in low speed in 1 and 2 gear. Also it feels like it trembles, everything else on the car is new, I don't wanna lose it I love the car🥲@@tigergreg8
Thank you for a slow, meticulous videos. It is slow enough for first time DIYers can easily follow the procedure.
Glad you like my style, and thank you for watching my videos
Took a dump while watching this and I gotta say, this is an underrated channel. Keep up the good content man.

Thank you Danny I bought a 03 civic with 180k transmission fluid was black shudder ed under initial acceleration then watched your video changed the fluid no shudder. Your video saved my civic thank you
I love a success story
Still going strong?
Just went from subaru dealer tech to an independent shop. I have to do one of these tomorrow morning. Ive been there three days. This video just saved my day.
Glad you’re able to get it done, let me know how it goes
@dannysdiygarage
Went smooth as butter. Also knocked out the rear struts, valve cover gasket, tires, brakes, brake flush, and plugs.
Took me about 3 hours.
Great video. Awesome that you added the drain plug torque specs.
Thant you
Fantastic, informative video. Exceptionally well done, my friend! Thank you for your time, effort, and expertise!
Just did a drain n’ fill on my 2006 coupe! Car has 185k when I purchased, last recorded ATF change was at 100k, car now has 191k. Pray for me, boys!
How did it go?
@@kareivuxk3314 so far so good!
@@kareivuxk3314 so far so good!
Do you know how much fluid you used?
@@CONald_is_A_false_Prophet You just put back in the same amount you drained out. The manual says 2.5 qts roughly so add 2 quarts, then use the dipstick to check the level before continuing.
Just bought a 2010 civic with 257k miles on it and I'm fairly certain that the trans fluid has never ever been replaced. So I'm going to be flushing and replacing that, alongside changing the transmission & motor mounts, and the lower control arm bushings, front & rear (KYB) shocks/struts, front ball joints, front & rear sway bar end links & bushings. After all of that hopefully the car will shift & ride like a dream. As right now it vibrates like crazy and shifts don't feel right.
I also need to get underneath and check out my suspension and bushing, I'll do this soon.
I've learned it's best if you don't know the history of the vehicle to do a drain and fill and not a flush as the internal components have become accustomed to the amount of contaminants and viscosity of the old fluid, so flushing and refilling may cause the transmission to slip. If that happens it's recommended to put the old fluid back in, or at least the majority of it and possibly top off with fresh fluid. But since you're already having shifting issues, hopefully new fluid with remedy that. Good Luck! My 2009 LX has over 320k on it and it drives great!
How’d this go?
Wow 9 months too late but you should’ve done you research first. Did you transmission survive
@@Anon-f7f yeah it works just fine, I just sold it a few days ago
Thank you! Easier than my old 2014 Ford Escape 1.6l Ecoboost. My car is a bit overdue, but I'm gonna do that this weekend.
Perfect..Will be doing mine next week for the first time
Great to hear, make sure you use the correct Honda fluid
Do you recommend doing the transmission while its in jack stands or on a flat surface?
Hi danny. Can you also make a video doing a change trans oil for manual transmission for civic 2009 vti? Thank you. More powert
Great video maestro!!!
Just bought a 2007 honda civic , thanks for the video . Felt like I was back in high school...
Great video maestro!! Thanks a lot
Appreciate you buddy 😊
Great video, but the engine should be running when you checking transmission oil level - it doesn’t have oil by pass like in the engine and after engine is off - transmission oil will drain off in to the pan. After service it, like you said drive the car for 10 min and the oil level has to be on “cold” mark, if drive a car for longer then 30 min the oil level should at “hot” mark - and if it’s lower - top it up.
You’ll want to read your owners manual, on this specific car, 8th gen civic as per the manual, how I demonstrated this is the correct procedure, different manufacturer have different methods, always consult your service information for the vehicle you’re working on
Use honda automatic trans fluid only, its literally the same price from your local autozones or whatever parts store you go to. The reason why we say this is because for example, Castrol or valvoline etc automatic trans Fluid fluids yeah its compatible with your honda dw1, BUT its compatible with almost every other vehicle. Honda makes these for ONLY HONDAS VEHICLES NOT EVERY OTHER. The additives that they add into the atf fluid to be universal will cause damage to your transmission, causing severe problems. Plus depending on where you’re located honda automatic trans Fluid usually go for $10 a quart and you only need 3 If you have the 8th gen civic.
Thanks for adding this information
@@dannysdiygaragein the Uk we have MTF From Honda? We use them in the ishift semi autos
I think some Hondas, especially hybrid are equipped with CVT transmission. Using ATF rather than CVT fluid will damage the transmission.
You are correct
Thank you for the video! Why did you use ATFluid for a CVTransmission? On my Transmission Fluid Dip Stick it says CVTF. Now I'm not sure which one to use.
His is an older automatic transmission not a CVT. You need CVT trans fluid.
Do you have a video for manual transmission service?
Sorry, I don’t
Easy to follow steps by steps,Thanks
You’re welcome
Good morning dear sir I liked your wonderful videos, thank you for what you do But I have a question I bought a 2010 Honda Civic with 411,000 kilometers on it in four days and had it checked at a center and it was good. The inspection technician told me that you need to change the gearbox oil Today, before I changed the oil, a noise or knock appeared in the gearbox when changing from P mode to D mode. With the appearance of a natha in the second to the third gear What do you advise me to change the oil all at once, and not remove 1 kilo and add 1 kilo? Please reply because I am very worried

Hard to diagnose things online, check your engine and transmission mounts
Got a 180k miles on my 08 civic should I change it even though I don’t know when it was ever changed last.
Heard you don’t wanna change it unless you do it regularly
if its shifting good right now, then you should change it, if your changing it because you have problems its probably not going to make a difference
How many km to change the atf? Once a year?
Is this the same thing as a 2015 Honda civic ?
Your old fluid is clean mine was black as sin
It’s because I changed my fluid every 30k, sometimes 15k, I monitor the fluid and change it regularly
Good to change it
Can we just clarify? Is this the HYBRID model with the CVT? (continously variable transmission)
No
You should replace the small transmission filter evey change too

*"SHAKE HANDS WITH DANGER"*
Where Jack Stand?
It does work for 2007 honda civic ? Thanks
Nice video, I have a question. When I drive my car (07 Civic) and then check the dip stick the fluid level is fine, I clean it with a paper towel and then re-insert the dip stick, I will do this 2 or 3 times and there is no fluid on the dip stick. Does this mean my level is low?
It shows up fine on the 1st attempt, but on the 2nd and 3rd attempt there is no fluid.
Most likely
Hey Danny I have a 2008 Honda Civic LX with 169k miles. I’ve never done a transmission service and since I got it when it had 125k miles on it I don’t know the transmission history on it if it was change regularly or not. My question is, is it safe to replace the fluid. Will it cause slipping? Thank you
If it’s not slipping now or having any issues, you should definitely change the fluid, I’ve spent 20 years as a transmission technician and changing the fluid never once caused any issues.
@@dannysdiygarage it does shift rough on cold starts and when driving slow. It has a pull feeling on around 10 to 15 mph. You could feel more of the shift on 2 to 3 gear
As long as it’s not slipping
@@dannysdiygarage I might sound ignorant but what does it mean by slipping? Like does it shift rough? Not shift at all? Mine shifts but very rough like it jerks when it shifts it’s gears sometimes. Sometimes it makes it metal to metal contact sound
There’s fluid in there I checked but what can that clanking sound mean?
Do you recommend changing the washer?
Honda does, I do it every 3rd time
Great video.
very good video .... great job
Thanks
Greetings,
Drain and fill capacity for R18A/Z1 Atf is 2.4 liters

Great video. Very helpful
Thank you for commenting
Bought an 8th gen civic automatic transmission 5 months ago with 180k miles is it wise to change fluid and filter now
If it’s shifting good yes, if it’s not maybe
Isn’t recommended to switch between gears to make sure of the actual level ? Once you seitch between gear the level should drop a bit..but other than that great video !
Thanks for the input 👍🏼
Great video.
Thank you,
Nice.. Who needs exactly.. It takes 2.4L
Did u experience anything after changing just the fluid and filter boss?
Everything is good
When i check my atf level when the car is at temp it reads way above the middle box. Above the "hot" area of the dip stick. 4 weeks now when i drive and release the gas pedal the rep stays a bit high and sometimes bounce up from under 1 to 1 1/2. Any idea whats yhe issue? Thank you
Maybe throttle body clean and relearn, I have a couple of throttle body clean videos, I’ll try to upload a throttle body relearn next week for you, if that would help, let me know?
@dannysdiygarage Yes please, it would be much appreciated! I will be looking out for that video, sub.
@dannysdiygarage Also my dash light been blacking out. Not the speed reader , the lower where all the lights are w rev & milage. Is there a fuse I can change or is something loose. I'll tap on the hood of speedometer and it comes back on, tia
hi Danny, my 2011 silver ex is exact replica of yours with 128k miles, transmission service with filter replacement done in 2017 @99k miles. fluid color was a bit darker pink compare to new fluid and was advised not to service at that time but ay a later date. it has been almost 6 years since and my fluid still looks good as new(pink/ smooth to the touch/mo debris') after 29k miles of driving, my new mechanic advising me not to change fluid as it is a over 10 years old car with no issues and shifting perfectly because older cars with new fluids has slippage issues according to his past experience. so I'm confused about what to do, I live in a extremely cold climate and I'm told my driving habits are very easy on the engine and transmission thus no maintenance required other than oil change and brakes with 1 tune up in last 11 years. any advice?
Your mechanic is incorrect, you need to change the fluid, I spent 20 years as a transmission technician, I have rebuilt hundreds of units, #1 failure is fluid gets old and and can’t cool and protect. I’ve never had a transmission fail from servicing it, it’s usually lack of. Hopefully this adds clarification
@@dannysdiygarage thanks
@@kaylee1482 Did you end up servicing the transmission Kaylee? I know some mechanics will say, if it's never been changed, and it's older and have a lot of miles, don't change it. I have a 2010 with 163.000 miles and I got it from a friend. I doubt it's ever been changed, but I'm going to do 3 intervals of fluid change and have my mechanic change the filter. I don't want bothered doing the filter. Haha.
@@tigergreg8 thanks for asking and yes, i just did a drain and fill, no filter change done, it has been shifting smoother good as new.
@@tigergreg8do you recommend I change the filter when I get it done? I just bought mine with 170k miles and I want to change it but it’s almost a reddish brown color, it’s time to change it but should I just change the filter then at the 2 3/4 quarts in?
Is there any gear oil calibration needed or not after ATF oil change
Just adjust the fluid to the proper level

Have a Honda civic Fd1 transmission kicks sometimes when you put it in drive anyone?
do you to drain out the old fluid in the torque converter? meaning you would need about 5 or 6 quarts to flush that out too. the fluid that comes out is from the oil pan not from torque converter, correct?
This is only drain and fill, not a torque converter flushing, you would need to do it twice
What's the difference between Honda ATF DW-1 and Honda ATF-Z1?
My 2008 Civic manual states to use ATF-Z1.
ATF-DW1 is the replacement for ATF-Z1, Call a Honda dealer, this is what they will tell you
@@dannysdiygarage Thank you for the fast reply. Bless you.
Filter?
These vehicles do not have a user-replaceable transmission filter
Yes, it does. It’s external.
@ReinPlayz-v4u I was told it's internal, you'd have to remove the transmission from vehicle.....
@@kenc.9067there is a small filter under the air box, there are many videos on the location and how to change it.

Great video ! In this video, you only put 2.5 quarts but i put all 3 quarts. Will there be problem ?? Thanks very much Dannys.
Not a smart idea to overfill.
Is this same oil good for the 2017 model?
I can’t answer that question, call Honda
Hello Sir, My 2010 Honda Civic has 70000 kms on it…….Can I Drain and fill for 3 times …to flush all old fluid out from the transmission !!?….Please guide
Absolutely, and is recommended
What is the name of the torque tool? I have not heard of it before and am having trouble finding it with a google search.
Thank you for your helpful video :)
You mean torque wrench
why cant i use regular automatic transmission fluid like from walmart?
If you don’t use the recommended fluid you will destroy your transmission.
Honda is specific when it comes to ATF unless you want to ruin the transmission
Do you change when the car is warm or can you do it cold?
Drive it, let it sit for 20 minutes and change it
When do i know that i need to change transmission fluid?
If the fluid isn’t bright red or smells burnt , or it’s been 60,000 miles, changing transmission fluid is never a bad idea
I drained mine and 4qt came out… pray for me.
