You are now officially my new favorite homesteading channel. GREAT harvest and so glad your hive is THRIVING! (*runs out to check her own carrot harvest*)
I have had the same thing happen in my apiary. Go out and purchase a perfectly marked and mated queen. She’s laying well, then POOF, a new queen is there. And as far as waiting for a new queen to get mated, it definitely takes patience. If you are finding that they are cleaning cells, but you can’t find her, give her more time. She’s probably out getting busy! 😊🐝
Those carrots were impressive! 🥕 Also, I want to say how much I enjoy you guys. You have the ability to talk to the camera and make me feel like I’m right there with you. It’s a skill! Can’t wait to hear your year off plans!
I LOVE YOU TWO! What a great garden. Glad you're not queen-less, Todd! Thanks for sharing all your expertise with us. You make me smile. With love from BanDana Gramma ❤
I love the thought of buying seeds from Luke. Nothing against him at all. I know he hires farmers to grow and collect the seeds. Last year I ordered all my peppers from him. Giant jalapeños, extra long cayenne etc. When they grew, the jalapeños were tiny buttons the size of a dime. They were completely round! The cayennes were 1 inch. Mixed in the peppers were to tobacco peppers.... I did not buy tobacco.
Nastershums-Mine reseed everywhere I go, for the last 35 years. I let my front garden go this year and they became a jungle. I had to go sweep (yes with a broom) the dirt to pick up all the dropped seeds. Now that I have the garden clean and planted, stray nastershums are starting to pop up, again. :)
BTW, I have noticed my neighbors are getting nastershums, too. I think the birds are helping to move the seeds. As for the carrots, you inspired me to go plant some, which I did after 3rd shift. Went to bed, was echausted but was excited about getting it done. I have an Urban property, which I recently acquired. I have only just now been able to get my growing areas sorted. I made the carrot bed out of a previously dead space. I am really excited to see how it will take off. Each little new sprout is like a new friend. LOL the magic of germination never ceases to entertain and amaze me. I become the child I was, when I gardened with my Pops. Thank you for your videos. I appreciate you.
Great Video & hey those carrots are just amazing- but loved the comment about the Queen Bee Rachel " Maybe she was just out having a Good Time " Loved it- Cheers Denise - Australia
So I went gung ho in planting this year, did a bunch of brassicas, which took a long time to mature, and then my Mother pointed out that I was using my valuable bed space for stuff that is cheap to buy....🤯 yes I was. I had a massive tomato harvest, but my whole brassica bed could have been used much better. The squirrels decimated it so it was a waste of time, effort and space! But live and learn! But where I live in Canada, onions, cabbage, beets, carrots potatoes are dirt cheap so next year I’m going to focus more on beans and squash. I’m not anywhere near self sustainability right now but when I get my land, I’m sure I’ll give the basic crops another try
Ohhhh, I look forward to hearing your plan on taking a year off! This year I am canning enough pickles and green beans so that I can take next year off for that but I really like the sound of your year off plan!
Hey Rachel, WOW what a successful carrot harvest!! Just curious the one carrot that had the flower did you let it continue bolt so you could save the seeds or was it already that you could save the seeds?
Surprise!!! No question this time LOL I cant wait to hear about The Great Escape Plan ;) I hope you dont mean, a year off from RUclips though, i have got used to having you around :) xxxx
Hello oh wow yall have been busy for the last few days. Great tip on the greats when the flowers start to show up. Thank you for sharing God bless stay safe and have a wonderful day
Lovely carrots, hurray! Did you say what variety they are? About the turtle beans. I think I remember that when stressed, bush beans can revert to their pole bean parentage and I would say our extreme Michigan heat this year could cause that! Thanks for sharing
After researching them more I think they are considered a half runner, ugh. Not sure if I'll try to fix it and throw up a trellis or just let them go wild. I only grow Danvers carrots, just different seed company
I can't remember which video you did but i hope this will help you had a video where you showed a hold in a pepper it is called cut worm does a lot of damage to your crops
great videos. I always learn something new. It was the onion necks tonight! I didnt know that. Anyways Todd....i tried doing a split done this afternoon but it started thundering and pouring. So i will finish it tomorrow.
I watched your video canning carrots. I haven't been able to find the video where you process the carrot stems? Could you please tell me which on that is or the link to it. I love your videos. I so wish I could be a home steader.
I love Luke and MI gardener seeds. My current garden is at least 80% MI gardener seeds. I will have to try these carrot seed though. I love Garden Carrots!
Thank you, we have had many people ask and just need to work it into our routine for editing to jot down what was selected. Will see if we can develop that habit. It's from a music subscription we have to Epidemic Sound.
You have said in a previous video that when Todd goes out to buy things at a store that you do not feel that you are doing your job being self-sufficient. Your comment had me contemplating about long term goals. I am not sure if you have spoken about this before, but what are your long term goals? Where do you plan on being in 2, 5, and 10 years with self-sufficiency? Or are you exactly where you want to be?
First time planting onions here. I planted by seeds and it seems like I have groups of onions growing close together. Should I separate the onions or just leave them alone?
@@1870s I am looking for something for everyday wear. I have tried Mock shoes but they seem to rub the back of my heal and looked like his shoes had a high back (heal area) maybe they won't rub. Thank You
It’s so annoying I always hear Gardeners on here talk about how people message them telling them thier beets or onions are too close together people always want to tell people that they’re doing something wrong but you could actually Grantham put it close together and get a lot bigger harvest it still get big vegetable. Cant stand it when people always want to try to tell you doing something wrong
I am having so much trouble growing onions.. I bought the seed bulbs and they never get fat all i get is the green tops.. What should i use to plant to get a real onion from my plants.. Help... any advice would be very helpful..
Try onion sets I've had the same problem. This year I got a lot of onion bulbs that did horribly but the onion starts( they are green and have roots) I got from a local feed store did amazing I got huge beautiful onions
Do you really think that you will be able to take a year off? I anticipate gardening about January. LOL I don't think I could emotionally handle that.🤣
Wait, Rachel, weren’t your other carrots in the ground? Or am I forgetting? If they were, that’s probably the difference in the growth, not the seed. Taking a year off sounds great, but I think it will have a negative effect on your RUclips channel. As long as you’re ok with that... PS, Your hair looks really cute like this.
That 1870's Homestead Ok, I guess I forgot. Well, I never thought about one company’s seeds growing better veggies than another, just thought about germ8nation. That’s good to know!
I found the link to MIgardener: migardener.com/ Hope this helps. Thanks so much for your wonderful videos. I especially like the ones featuring canning and freezing and hope that you produce more of them.
Why don't you let some of your carrots go to seed and then you won't have to buy them each year? With nasturtiums we never replant them, they always regrow.

I’ve planted nasturtiums once in my life ! Always reseed themselves! My favourite is the trailing nasturtium
Nice that you have a queen. With regards to the root crops you can always give them away, it fosters good will with your neighbours. Happy day !
Carrots are already processed and canned up in the basement pantry 🙂 we will eat no prob

You're looking great today.

Haha omg the queen wasn't having it!
Another great carrot crop! Is that what happens if there are two queens, one will kill the other?
Yes that's why there's only " One Queen Bee"
That first frame you showed had an open queen cell on it 😂. Glad it worked out though.
That was from when we did the split, like 4 weeks+ ago.
@@1870s that's awesome I guess she came back first lol.

Were the carrots the same variety from MI Gardener and so true seed company? If so what variety? Yes, I have had nasturtiums reseed which is awesome!
Danvers
Is the cover you are using for shade or to keep bugs away?
Not sure which cover you're referring to, I have some over my newly planted carrots for shade and some over some of my Cabbage for insects
What was the carrot variety from MiGardener and what was the carrot variety from True Seed?
Both Danvers

First time planting onions here. I planted by seeds and it seems like I have groups of onions growing close together. Should I separate the onions or just leave them alone?
I don't do Instagram so updates on here would be greatly appreciated. I do enjoy and support your RUclips channel however.
Heard you should always bury the tops?? Is this wrong?
I've never heard that
My carrots always get soft right after I pull them. Do you have to soak the in water?
I pull the tops and store in the fridge.
Can you put green beans in the freezer until you have enough to can? If so do you need to blanch first?
I have done it before
I freeze all my green beans, as my husband and I don't like the taste or texture of canned green beans. And I do blanch them first.
What are the shoes that Todd is wearing?
An old pair of Crocs.
@@1870s I am looking for something for everyday wear. I have tried Mock shoes but they seem to rub the back of my heal and looked like his shoes had a high back (heal area) maybe they won't rub. Thank You

I am going to try it next season.
Sow True Seed & MI Gardener
Hi Rachel. You may have answered this before, but what equipment are you using to create your videos?
What variety of carrot were those??
Danvers
Hot? Try 97 feels like 101....when I shop for red onions I prefer the tennis ball size. I think they taste better
Maybe the mark on the queen got taken off by other bees interacting with the original queen
