The reason Arnold is so precise with looking around is he and James Cameron decided that the Terminator should scan his environment like how a security camera moves back and forth.
Kyle didn't know he's the father. John did.
I'm sorry but.....who's making fun of this movie?
Well, the line between Horror and Comedy is a thin one, so seeing "The Terminator" as a comedy is...different.;)
I feel like someone told her this was a comedy coming into it. I've never seen someone laugh at such strange parts of it lol
Also wanted to say I’m not judging in any way I mean react the way you react it’s fine. It just sort of threw me off.
I had the same perplexed response to Meg's impression that this was funny.
I think the sheer fame of this movie and the self referential later work from Arnie have probably seeped so far into pop culture that you can come out with a very weird impression of his early work.
Some other odd takes were the impression of Tech Noir being perceived as a queer club, when it was more simply being heavily 80s infused.
I did chuckle at the comment about how buff Sarah's shoulders were, given she was wearing period accurate shoulder pads. Wait for her physique in T2!!!
I think older films like this can feel a bit different for those of us who didn’t grow up watching films like this… or being used to the genre. Also, she could be referring to the memes surrounding Terminator… like the “I’ll be back” one liners & such out of context.
I don't know if anyone else has brought this up, but the Terminator is an allegory for time itself.
"It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or fear, or remorse. And it absolutely will not stop, ever - until you're dead."
Time. You cant bargain with it. You cant reason with it. It doesn't feel bad about what happens to you. And it will not stop, at least for you, until you are dead.
This thing all things devours,
Birds, beasts, trees, and flowers.
Oh🤯
@@--mr4yo An evil robot!
@@garethhughes7430 It's literally a metal grim reaper.
Like, hey man, if like, there's an infinite number of moments, and your like, death is only one moment, then isn't it really unlikely you'll actually encounter that moment, man? 🤯...😅
Kyle tells Sarah in the motel that he always wondered what Sarah was thinking about at the moment the picture was taken. At the end, we learn what she was thinking about at that very moment, was thinking of Kyle.
“Tech Noir” actually became a genre after this movie pioneered the term with the club name! It’s not unlike cyberpunk in tone or themes.
It's also the name of a pretty dope electronic band who make 80s-inspired music
Another thing you have to appreciate about this film is that the police are portrayed very competently, it's just the Terminator is so far beyond the normal scale they usually deal with, that it renders them powerless to stop it.
As always, big shout out to Matt, who went hand to hand with a Terminator for an impossible amount of time.
May he rip the buttons of all of our blouses.
With his teeth
Arnold was initially considered for the role of Kyle Reese, while Lance Henriksen (the detective who talked too much) was being drawn up to play the Terminator. Arnold however read the script and wanted the role of the Terminator. OJ Simpson was also considered for the Terminator role but they didn't believe he could play the role of a cold-blooded killer.
OJ a killer? Who would buy that?
Its amazing how such a straightforward concept managed to become so iconic, and on such a small budget too.
I especially appreciate how in the future scenes there's still a air of hope about, despite the bleakness of the situation, with Kyle taking a second to play along with some kids.
at the end, she had a dog that was not only "cute", but a reference (consequence) of what was shown in that scene of the future :
the terminators were perfect infiltration units, but the dogs recognized them and started barking to warn the humans.
In a world like that, you kind of have to keep the hope alive.
A lot of people miss the fact that she was thinking of Kyle in the picture. Kyle says when they are in the hotel: “I used to wonder what you were thinking in that picture.” She was thinking of him when the little kid took it. So poetic and powerful writing.
11:35 - If a machine - a Terminator, let's say - knows only his target's name but not what she looks like, being a machine he'd work his way down through list of possible targets knowing that one of them WILL be the right one. Like nested IF/THEN loops - IF subject name is 'Sarah Connor', THEN kill.
It's funny that you mentioned Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon given that Rex in that game is voiced by Michael Biehn who plays Kyle Reese in this.
I was thinking this the whole time! I really hope she sees this comment
No way!!!!!!!
They built the dance club set in an empty retail store. While filming the scenes, regular people got in line thinking it was a real dance club. 😯🤣🤣
There's a great scene that was cut. Kyle sees nature, trees and such for the first time and he breaks down crying becuase he's never seen any if it before and he says' all just gone in the future.
I've been waiting for these releases! T1 and T2 are a couple of the best films ever created. Masterpieces!
@@themooseisloose94 the 3rd and 4th are great ones too
Oh gosh I cried my eyes out at T2. Even better than the first 💜😭
@MegMageReacts, I'd say. Oh, and that part where the Terminator asked for a phased plasma rifle in a 40-watt range, that's a future weapon. There's no way that would be made in the 80s
@@Chango101 eh compared to the first 2 its a whole different league. Like Godfather 3 compared to the first 2
hey I’m Ryan I have a movie request can you please do the movie anaconda and if you can please wear leather gloves for the movie
There's a deleted scene where Reese breaks down that really adds a lot to his character.
& the picture is such a cool part. Reese always wondered what Sarah was thinking about when the picture was taken. She was thinking about him.
Yeah this movie is a Sci-fi classic that plays like a horror movie. People joke about parts of it, but it is one of the most popular movies ever for a reason.
It is a horror movie.
Oh it's totally a horror movie. So are Alien and Jurassic Park.
I love that Sarah is the fulcrum of destiny in this. She’s destined to bear a son that will lead mankind to defeat the machines - but for Reese, who has become a kind of machine himself just to survive, she teaches him love. It’s a little goofy from some perspectives, but that sex scene has her really kind of… peeling him open with her affection. He doesn’t know how to respond until she has blasted away all the miserable accretions of survival and fear, and can love her back.
I dunno, it’s nice.
Your laughter reminds me of the Naked Gun where they walk out laughing after seeing Platoon 😂.
Dude.. I was thinking the same. "I'm into something good" 🎵🎵
"He's hilarious"
Arnold proceeds to murder almost everyone he meets
I'm sorry, what's making you giggle?
I just can't get my head around the idea that you thought this was a comedy for most of the movie
Steve Cameron explained in interviews that he based it off a nightmare he'd had once
James Cameron not Steve
@@MDBowron You're absolutely right, my bad
Indeed. The Terminator - fun comedy for your whole family! :D But some people has laughing as a self defence mechanism when your brain notice something disturbing. Maybe she has that I dunno. I guess she will laugh her as* off during the second one.
@@CliffuckingBooth I don't know. I got the impression she was so convinced that it was a comedy going in (by pure, blind ignorance), that she interpreted everything she saw as something to laugh at. Including violence, gore, and Arnold's accent.
Seriously, she actually says she thinks he's putting on a funny voice, making fun of the man for the way he speaks. Gross.
aMuricans giggle when they see someone getting shot ?
With all the school- and mass-shootings going on near daily basis, I´m not one bit surprised they just laugh about it.. They´re immune (indiffernt) to it by now.
T2 is one of the best movies of all time, and one of the best sequels too. Just like Aliens I would say it's one of the few movies where the sequel is better then the original.
51:41 Kyle didn't know that he was John Connor's father. John knew it and sent Kyle back to make sure that he's born
Yeah, I was like, "where did she get that from"?? Maybe Meg was reading too much into it, I guess?
16:50 The "funny" is the last word that comes to my mind about his character.🙃
One of my favorite 80's comedies. Right up there with "The Shining" and "The Thing." 😊
In the 80's, you'd go watch movies in theaters that were old one-room classic venues with ornate lobbies and balconies and you'd be completely surprised by an original story like "The Terminator". It was a truly great time to be a film fan.
Glad to see they still have a big impact on home screens to a new audience.
Omg, can't wait for Terminator 2! Such a welcome surprise!
She's already seen it
Meg, you're literally dying in this reaction, lol. 46:19 Evil Meg sighted
Arnold actually wanted to say "I will be back" because he thought that's how a machine would say it
@ No, Arnold thought ”I’ll” sounded weird, but the director insisted.
Yeah, Cameron's response was basically "I do not tell you how to act, you do not tell me how to write"
25:27 He's scanning everything with his eyes, like radar. Also, Terminator 2 is absolute S-Tier.
As for the chemistry between Sarah and Kyle, apparently Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn developed real feelings for one another on set. It couldn't go anywhere, for they were both married to others at the time, but it may have informed their performance.
James Cameron came up with the film after he had a nightmare about a robot trying to kill him. And in return we got one of the greatest films of all time
There is a deleted scene that shows that the factory at the end is owned by "Cyberdyne Systems" and some workers examining the Terminator's debris 😯😯😯
100% on RT... nobody makes fun of it... that's how you invite a visit from the Terminator.
My favourite fact about the casting of this movie is that it took them a long time to find an actor to play the Terminator and one of the actors that were suggested to Cameron was O.J. Simpson.
Cameron said no because he didn't think anyone would believe O.J. as a killer! Lol
James Cameron is such a legend now that it's hard to imagine the fact that he was completely broke during most of this movie's filming. He once mentioned that his mom was sending him coupons so he could afford to eat.
The way you laugh uproariously when Arnold's mowing people down with his machine gun! 🤣
I had a girlfriend in high school that would laugh at horror movies and Cronenberg films. Possibly the best gf i ever had. 😅
The first movie is a low budget horror film. The second movie is the most expensive movie ever made (at the time) action movie.
James Cameron just kept making the most expensive movies, huh? Just 6 years after T2 Titanic became the most expensive movie with double the budget, around $200 million. Crazy how it just kept rising. What's wild is that all 3 Lord of the Rings movies only cost $260 million for comparison.
Kyle didn’t know he was John’s father. John did know, and that’s why he gave Kyle the picture of Sarah. Kyle lived in an era of constant fighting and survival so any feelings he had for a woman were all directed towards John’s mother. He idolized her and John and John used that to get him to want to go back to 1984 to protect her. Can’t wait for T2.
I don' think I've ever seen someone laugh so much while watching Terminator.
Matt is kind of like a big brother to Sarah. I was born in 85, and even up until 2003 when I was in high school, my guy friends would kiss me on the cheek. It was seen as friendly and affectionate. Maybe flirty if you were both single. In the script, which has scenes that were cut out, it shows Matt as a decent guy.
The meme clip of Arnold as Whitney Houston is going to give me nightmares?😂😂
God at the end, when she was thinking about Kyle when that picture of her was taken... It gets me.
Ah, so the excessive laughter is a coping mechanism of fear and not ridicule for the topic material, some people miss that fact and think that laughter at serious times are just an insult.
But of course seeing Arnold without eyebrows is unnerving, laughter is understandable.
THANK YOU for understanding 😅❤️
😂 “Old Farts don’t come for me” . I need this on a t-shirt.
What enhanced the 'Farg you esshore' was the fact it was selected from a menu.
T2 is one of the best action films of the 80’s and probably 90’s too. Great reaction! Fully enjoyed
33:14 No, he still has two functioning eyes. It's just that one of them no longer has a human covering.
I can't see the end of this movie without hearing a joyful Finnish voice in my mind saying "Hydraulic Press wins again!"
'Are you a cyborg?' -- Terminators don't feel pain. I do. And, of course, he knows to manage it.
Michael Biehn, the actor who plays Kyle Reese in this movie, also voices Rex Colt in Blood Dragon.
I never knew that this was a comedy!
This is such an amazing but the behind the scene stuff is just as great. The original idea that made James Cameron decide to write this script is when he was making some crappy low-budget movie called Piranha 2. He got incredibly sick and was in bed for days. He had some scary nightmares but the one that stuck with him the most when he recovered was a dream where he was on the ground and a legless robot was crawling towards him with a large knife.
Also I know the way Arnold looks around seems kinda goofy but it was actually Arnold's idea. He has his eyes move in one direction and his head follows, like a security camera. He figured a machine would not make unnecessary head movements.
"look at the shoulder muscles on her" oh, you had no idea... 🤣🤣🤣
After watching T2, YES- I truly had no idea!
The sunglasses actually come from the sequel. After that showed in theaters everyone had to have one of those.Oh...and Michael Biehn (Kyle Reese) voices Rex Powercolt in Far Cry: Blood Dragon.
I do like this film alot. I love the use of stop motion for the t800 endoskeleton, it’s so scary especially the hallway scene.
As goofy as this film COULD have been, James Cameron knocked it out of the park!! ♥️🤟😎♥️
True. I also saw short fan movies with no budget whatsoever that also managed to sell the illusion well.
I was confused by the laughing
One of the police, Lance Henriksen, is Admiral Hackett in Mass Effect
The infamous line "I'll be back" caused a discussion between Arnold and director James Cameron... AS thought a robot/cyborg wouldn't say "I'll" but "I will" JC disagreed ... They went back and forth until JC said "Your the actor.. I'm the director... The line is "I'll be back" ... end of discussion" Arnold later said James was right. 😎
Neat fact couple years later the guy Arnie puts his arm thru is the main bad guy in Stallone movie COBRA
5:42 It is very typical in cyberpunk, that´s the reason the subgenre is called like that.
_Thief_ is a good 80s film with one of those synth soundtracks. Starring James Caan (Sonny from _The Godfather_ ).
Thief is incredible, very atmospheric. I love how silent that movie is, they just let all the scenes breathe.
Reese never knew he was John's father, but John knew, and had to look his friend in the eye, knowing who he was, who he would be, and that it would be his decision that made it happen. Gotta love bootstrap paradoxes and the hard choices of leadership.
Also, Terminator 2 is one of the greatest sequels of all time. Can't wait for you to watch it. You weirdly predicted some stuff from it...
The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day are the Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back of my generation.
“The 80s were awful for women because they got called Honey on the regular” and she calls her Honey literally seconds later.
Love that these younger folk are totally getting into stuff us kids of the 80s and 90s luved back then. Nice to know our childhood favorites we always try sharing still hold up and maybe still inspire new kids.
31:56 Yeah, it seems a bit *over* in a relative sense now, but 11 yr old me was terrorized. 😅
Reese did not know he was the father, but John Connor did, which is why he chose Reese for this mission.
@Rocket1377 but John was going to send him anyways, cause he knew he was his father, and if he didn't send him, he wouldn't exist.
@Rocket1377 John knew Kyle was his father,Sarah told him so on the tape she made. Also, in T2, John himself says he knows who his father was. He says he ain't going to personally meet his father till he was about 30. So he knew his father was Kyle. Kyle didn't know.
@Rocket1377 In this very movie, Sarah says on the tape to John, "You must send Kyle or you can never be." And she says this while she's talking about who John's father is. She says "should I tell you about your father? Then she says I guess I will I at least owe him that.
So Sarah herself told John on the tape who his father was and even told him if he didnr send Kyle he could never be born.
Kyle didn't know he was the father, but John did. If Kyle had known, he wouldn't have fought as hard or as valiantly in in his present (the future), knowing he had to live in order to go back an conceive John with Sarah, and THEN he wouldn't have become the man Sarah fell in love with. John never would've been born, thus creating a paradox.
One of my favorite movies from a story and character arc is THE QUIET MAN with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara and the movie was filmed on location in Ireland has great Love story with humor grace and some action. You won't regret it maybe for valentine day or something
Yeah, I was going "She hasn't seen this yet? What?"
So, yes, we need T2 ASAP, while this is still fresh on your mind. One of the best sequels ever.
Honda came out with a new and VERY 80s-looking line of scooters about a year before this movie was made - the "Elite" series - and Sarah's was the top-of-the-line Elite 250 with the pop-up headlight. You see these scooters - especially the iconic 250 - all over in 80s media (movies, TV shows, MTV, etc.), and they became a mid-80s craze for those who could afford them. They got about 50 MPG in an era where the average car got about 10-12 MPG - and the smaller models got even better mileage but had lower top speeds - so they were very popular. A few other companies tried to release competing models to cash in, but none were really successful - Honda really dominated the scooter market in the 80s, but scooters fell out of fashion at the end of the 80s, and the Elites were discontinued in the early 90s.
Regarding casting, Cameron was originally using Lance Hendrickson (the sarcastic white cop at the station - "like shit, boss") as the Terminator, which likely would have been the plan had he not been able to secure a better budget. Then he got a meeting with Arnold, who had just finished Conan and was trying to expand his acting roles with limited success. Arnold really didn't want to be the Terminator at first, as he didn't want to play a bad guy, but Cameron and his agent convinced him it would help his career, so he agreed to do it. Arnold didn't really believe in the movie at first - Cameron essentially being a first-time director (technically second-time, but that's a whole other story), and this seeming like it could be a crappy B-movie. He gave a few dismissive interviews about it - but then it was released, and he saw the finished movie, and was really impressed. The fact that, despite being a small, fairly low-budget movie with limited advertising, it did relatively well in the theaters, Arnold acknowledged that this is really the movie that gave him his career, despite having done Conan first.
Kyle Reese says he always wondered what she was thinking in the photo John gave him. We see at the end the kid taking that exact photo of Sarah and she literally is thinking of Kyle at that moment 😢. He fell in love with a woman in a photo who is thinking of him with love.
Also no Kyle doesn’t know he is Johns father. John Connor knows and allows Kyle to volunteer knowing what will happen to his father 😢.
I loved the synth soundtrack too! Can you feel nostalgic for a time you weren't a part of? 😅
In my opinion, absolutely!
Hi i'm new here and can you watch that animated feature film no one remembers.
"Eleanor's Secret" (2009)
i've seen this movie at least 30 times over the last 25 years or so, and I never noticed the pig in the background in the police station lmao
you're gonna love T2
Yeah, Arnold's return as the Terminator in the sequel is great. The stakes feel higher with the good guys in even greater peril. We think of Arnold as only playing good guys these days, but he makes such a great villain too.
The funnier thing about that "I'll be back" clip, is that i actually use it as a segway for my movie reviews.
Kyle Reese didn't know he was John Connor's father; John knew and had to send his own father back knowing he would die or he'd never exist and humanity would be doomed. I think you may be quite jaded to the seriousness, violence, and horror of this film watching so much that came afterwards, especially a comedy parody.
It wasn't just a picture of Sarah, but a captured moment when she was thinking about her love for Kyle, for him.
The Terminator T-800 was methodical and algorithmic in its decisions. Iterating through the phone book list of Sarah Connors, figuring out how to get past the security barrier at the police station, and so many other big and small things; such as when he/it was damaged to limping it aquired a machine to allow it to catch up to humans who could, at the time, outrun it. Also, it determined looking scary and telling the passenger to "Get Out" as the most efficient way to take that machine without wasting time and energy in its condition battling for the truck. It just threw the big guy from the payphone to see the phone book. It told-off the super picking the best selection on his list of responses, including the phrase the punk used in the beginning. However, when necessary it blew away the gun store clerk/owner and through Matt who was attacking it through a few walls to remove the obstacle.
This was such a cool thing back when I saw this because I was also building things and writing code translating how a machine could accomplish things.
This movie has peak male friendship dialogue > "how do I look" "like sh**" "yo momma" *mikedrop*
This here is my all time favorite movie! I'm so happy that you enjoyed this! I'm STOKED that you're wanting to watch the sequel - because holy fuck it's damn good, too. This one's my favorite because of the serious action and amazing acting from everyone involved! :) lol, the soundtrack is filled with bangers, too! lol, it's awesome that you chose to recognize that in your reaction. :) Made me feel very happy. :D
So - yup! I'm subbing and looking forward to the T2 reaction!
Ohhhh!! Sarah Connor's played by the same actress in the sequel! Be prepared for that! :D
I think Conan the Barbarian movie also with Arnold would probably be on your list to watch eventually after Terminator movies, there's also funny moments in there too😆
One of my favourite horror movies as this and the second movie were some of my first as a kid. It was constantly on in my house. It’s horrifying to think that the humans weren’t even trying to change the future to be better but was just trying to SURVIVE it. The desperation is what scared me the most cause they know they’re doomed from the start, but they just want a chance for some of them to live
The Terminator theme has a really weird time signature giving it a mechanical feel, its actually been abit of a contentious point for like 30 years people arguing what the Signature actually is the Composer Brad Fiedel came out said its a 13/16 Time signature.
Terminator is like a twin brother to DC"s Metallo.
5:54 and 6:07 Which one is the right way to call her?
haha "girl you need to put on a hat".... maybe a clown costume to really blend in.
" 'honey' ... i would hate to be a woman in the 80's"...
30 seconds later : calls her honey present day lol
Different context.

Honey ? Oh my what a monster
This movie is a masterpiece! The second one is just as good, probably better. Can't wait to see you react to T2!
She has already seen T2
This movie can be seen as unintentionally comedic but the sequel T2 was intentionally written with comedy. It’s also arguably one of the best movie in cinematic history!
Kyle Reese is played by Michael biehn same guy who voices Rex power colt in blood dragon
Meg the reason why people like the second film is because arnold is back in the film but this time not all as they seem, i won't go any further then that but sarah connor will be at the beginning of her bad ass stage though.
You absolutely, positively _must_ watch Terminator 2. My preference is the theatrical release, not the director's cut, but either is worth watching.
If you haven't already seen T2, please watch the Theatrical Cut!
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
PS I love your reactions, especially your Batman TAS reactions. And I absolutely adore that you defended Willie Scott from Temple of Doom!
I'll tell you about another good time travel movie. It's called "Deja Vu." Denzel Washington plays an ATF agent who, during the investigation into a terrorist bombing, finds out that the US government has discovered time travel and is keeping it as a private tool.
The Terminator’s outfit changes after the shootout at the Tech Noir club, so where does the Terminator get the new clothes? On a more serious note, it’s funny how both the machines and the human race unintentionally (or intentionally) send back in time the ones who conceive their leaders, Kyle who’s John Conners father and the Terminator who’s parts will become the basis for and lead to Skynet.
Great reaction and review!
Please do watch Terminator 2. It's much better and you'll surely love it!
Terminator 1 just had a very small budget, but it was greatly done - and so it was really loved, like you did.
Terminator 2 enjoyed a much bigger budget, thus it was done excellently over-all. And that it is considered by many, as the best film sequel ever made! So do please check it out! 😉
True story.
Up and coming filmmaker James Cameron while stranded in some foreign country had a fevered dream of an apocalyptic wasteland in which cybernically skeletal beings with eyes as red as death were dominant over all.
As inspiration, he decided to take matters into his own hands in making films, his way and Ultimately create a new kind of cinematic myth of Man vs. Machine for the fate of the world.
Prior to casting, Schwarzenegger was a bodybuilding champion who became a movie star after Conan the Barbarian (1982),
Linda Hamilton (Sarah Connor) appeared in Stephen King's Children of the Corn months earlier and Michael Biehn (Kyle Reese) had appeared in a theatre production of "Cat on A Hot Tin Roof".
Very few resources that came together to make this happen.
Low budget, small locations, short filming schedule and good 'state of the art' effects for it's time.
It was all worth it as it became one of the best movies of the year.
Highly iconic from the scenes of drama, suspense and action.
Also some of the most memorable lines ever (I'll be back is unforgettable).
The original score and Terminator main theme by Brad Fiedel is one of the best ever.
By now, the franchise has been all over the place.
Comics, video games, toys, a short-lived theme park attraction, animated series and much more.
40 years later.
Amazing isn't it?
