I had the opportunity to see Genesis with a backstage pass a number of times I have continued to be friends with chester a few years before I met him I had my right rotor cuff rebuilt, while he was in town with his Christian band we would get together he could see I had problems with my shoulder I had just about quit playing because I was not able to perform like I used to...! here is one of the greatest lessons that I received from him when I try to explain that I wasn't able to play like I used to he said then change your style and continue to play because this is when you will really start to learn he also said he has added and Incorporated change to his style many times over the years he took the time to explain to me how important it was and to continue playing which I have done I'm very blessed to be able to call Chester my friend
A great honor to know the Master Chester Thompson, I have seen Chester walk on water with Genesis, nobody floats like Chester, one of the greatest ever!
I met Chester at a clinic back in the 90's just prior to the We Can't Dance Tour...he autographed a CD and told me his fav live song was All In A Mouses Night...I think that lasted for one tour, but all Genesis is first class drummer's music, great to see him still throwin' down...
Chester Thompson is a great drummer whether he is playing with Genesis, Phil Collins or his trio, not to mention all the various artists he has played with. Very few drummers are capable of his versatility. I played 30+ years ago when I just recently began playing again and I study Chester knowing it only make me a much better drummer than I was years ago because his playing motivates me.
I have seen Chester several times with Genesis. Such a great and underrated drummer. When I saw Genesis at the Santa Monica Civic many years ago, someone sneaked onto stage from the side and jumped onto Phil Collins's drum set during a song (forget now what song) while Phil was singing and Chester was playing drums. The dude was so fired-up that he played too fast and after a few seconds Phil just turned around and stared at him, but the others continued playing. The guy drummed along for about 30 seconds before two very large gentleman grabbed him and very roughly took him off the stage. God only knows what happened to the guy after that.
Chester Cortez Thompson, indeed one of the best, he started with Ben E King, then went on to play with Zappa, Weather Report, Phil and Genesis, Bee Gees and more. His best playing outside of Phil Collins and Genesis is basically the 1986 hit Next Time I Fall, from Amy Grant and Peter Cetera, who had just left Chicago as bassist.
The benefit that Phil Collins received from Chester Thompson is inestimable. Chester provided Phil with a masterclass of inspiration and instruction being at least as good as Phil and in many ways vastly superior. I saw Genesis in 1974, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1982, etc including tours for The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Trick Of the Tail, Wind & Wuthering, And Then There Were Three, Duke, Abacab and Mama. On the Trick Of The Tail tour Bill Bruford didn't really sych with the band (or Phil) and the music suffered. When Chester arrived in 1977, the band took off musically as a truly exceptional live band. This is clearly evidenced on the live album Second's Out; other worldly power, musical elegance and delicacy.
Chester Thompson is such an amazing drummer! Great drum solo! I’m not used to his snare tuned so high, it sounds like a timbale. But, sounds great with his solo!
No backing tracks required for this master class! Chester is definitely among the most musical, technically proficient and incredibly tasteful drummers to ever walk the planet. An inspiration to me, and no doubt countless others, over the past 40+ years. Even dropping the occasional stick doesn't phase him in the least.
One of my favorite drummers!! To sad that he is really getting older now together with Phil... Seen him live for the last time in 2006 at Amsterdam ArenA. He was looking much better then..
I saw Chester play with Genesis in 1980. I was simply floored. I’ve been blessed to see a lot of world-class drummers in my time. Sure, Chester could do chops. But that was never the point of his playing. Chester brought a certain soulfulness to progressive rock, giving Genesis an accessibility live it never would’ve gotten had they awarded the job to anyone else. You always knew where the 1 was with Chester. Your groove was safe with him.
This awesome drummer, played drums, for my most favorite band, ever!!! And you did us proud Chester👍. What an amazing career and life you’ve had. One you probably never saw coming. Thank you Chester , for all your hard work and dedication all these years❤️.
This a master class for sure. I think one of his best all round performances, is on Steve Hackett's, The Tokyo Tapes, Live in Japan. It's arguably, the best live album I've ever heard. Chester Thompson was a huge part of that sound 🎶😀.
Oooooo I love the musicality with the cymbals...back in the 30s and 40s and the 50s the symptoms symbol company used to have the Cymbal man do demonstrations..with nothing but Cymbals...(Chicago .( Drum Shop )
met Chester at one of his clinics back in the early 90's, just after A Joyous Noise was released...you gotta be the man to tour with Genesis for decades...
“The backbone of Genesis Live, Mr. Chester Thompson”, Phil Collins’ introduction of Chester at Wembley Stadium for the Invisible Touch tour. One of the greatest live performances ever given along with Steve Gadd playing with Eric Clapton at Hyde Park. Both great live concerts with great performances from the drummers and a great job by the audio engineers.
Going to the shuffle feel in the last part of the solo is so effective.. especially if people are still hearing it as straight.. it creates a mad polyrhythmic effect. No one makes the clear Ambassadors sound better on the toms. Uses the Tumbao ostinato so tastefully, artistically and originally, got "his" sound all over it. Love it!
chester the best. Sono italiano. Adoro la batteria. Chester è il mio modello di riferimento. La scuola di Zappa e gli anni con Phil ne hanno fatto un percussionista unico. Grazie
A few of the biggest artists and groups hired sir Chester Thompson for playing drums... Frank Zappa, Weather Report, Genesis, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, Santana, Bee Gees... He belongs to the best.
It's interesting that Phil Collins, one of the greatest drummers ever, even learned something too. Just goes to show that even the best learn something new.
Actually It was Phil who taught Chester some things. I know this because I know Chester personally. People don't realize Phil is first and foremost a drummer, a very accomplished drummer. Chester is great, but don't underestimate Phil. Check out Phil with the fusion group Brand X he use to play in.
+HugelyRound Why are you surprised Phil Collins is in it and Chester is not? Collins is the one that came up with all of the parts and played in the recordings. It certainly does not surprise me.
Phil Collins is a very accomplished drummer. That's his primary Instrument. Singing and writing were always secondary. Phil Collins deserves to be there, and so does Chester.
Exactly…they went from a Ferrari driving the band to a Toyota. I met Chester at a drum clinic after Genesis’ ‘92 tour. He was a kind, humble, and wonderfully talented GENTLEMAN. He autographed my tour program and it was a master class watching him perform 8 feet away from me. EVERYONE loves Chester! 😎
One of the best drummers ever! I first saw him with Genesis in 1986.
Dang that must’ve been a good show !
He is so underrated, one of the best!!
Effin agreed!
It's been ages since I've seen Chester playing with a single kick. He's always been one of my favorite drummers. He has an incredible feel.
Cool story👍.
A great honor to know the Master Chester Thompson, I have seen Chester walk on water with Genesis, nobody floats like Chester, one of the greatest ever!
Great drummer, great person.
🤔
Chester did a great job with Ron Kenoly too.
Even when he dropped the stick his facial expression didn't change! Ice cool and in the moment. One of my favourite drummers :)
Ice cool and at the same time such warmth and depth - one of my favourite drummers too!
Love Chester's style. Beautiful way of putting all the cymbals and toms etc together.
You always know it's Chester playing as soon as you hear the toms
Wonderful Chester Thompson Wonderful!!!! MASTER DRUMS!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! LONG LIFE FOR HIM.
I love Chester Thompson playing.Nice clean technique’s 🥁
I ve meet this guy in 1998 in Montreal drum fest he gave me an autograph, good advice and was the nicest drummer there, always remember him ! so sweet
he has a certain elegance the way he plays.a great talent.
To me, he - and his drumming - is THE embodiment of class.
Thompson always has the best sounding toms. I could listen to him play all day long.
Agreed! Especially when he was using the Fiberskyn heads back in the day!
OMG he always had the best sound. I've tried to tune my kit for 32 years to get that sound. Especially the toms. Cold blooded.
Ahahahahahahahahahahahahah
Chester with Phil Collins amazing !!!
Never had his snare tuned like that for Genesis.
I met Chester at a clinic back in the 90's just prior to the We Can't Dance Tour...he autographed a CD and told me his fav live song was All In A Mouses Night...I think that lasted for one tour, but all Genesis is first class drummer's music, great to see him still throwin' down...
They did that song very few times (like 5 or so) during the beginning of the Wind & Wuthering tour
The first time I saw him was with Zappa. Mind blowing!
boy Zappa liked drummers didnt he..only the best..(don't forget about Ralph Humphrey)
Sweet rhythm. The best drum solos are the ones you can dance to.

C.T. is a complete drummer (technical playing and musical intuition). He plays for others and live for his drumming. No breeze of egoism.
lanternman13 Been loving his playing going as far back as when he was with Zappa.
He is technically and musically amazing. He plays the Bailey technique ( he doesn't use his pinky finger).
Seconds Out is one of the finest recordings of all time. Chester makes it perfect.
By the way, when was his last (drumming) session with Phil Collins?
Much love and respect for Chester! Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Love this man. One day Chester I must met you and thank you for some of the most memorable times in my life. Cheers mate.
Chester is awesome drummer!
Chester Thompson is such an amazing drummer! Great drum solo! I’m not used to his snare tuned so high, it sounds like a timbale. But, sounds great with his solo!
Genius. Unparalleled. Multi-faceted. Limitless.
One would have to be a monster on the drums to play for Collins. Thompson is the Monsters Monster.
Owning the kit.
Superb drumming and great feel.. a natural talent 👍

Thompson, Chambers and Colaiuta. For me they are the best.

Happy birthday chester
Chester e phil ...duets fantastic ...!!!
I love the sound of the toms!
Many forget or don't know that Chester also played with Weather Report early on.
That was a song, seem him play with Frank in LA. 3 hrs non stop drumming, blew me away at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.
Jaw dropping drum playing. It's like a demo of what you can do with the damn thing.
This a master class for sure. I think one of his best all round performances, is on Steve Hackett's, The Tokyo Tapes, Live in Japan. It's arguably, the best live album I've ever heard. Chester Thompson was a huge part of that sound 🎶😀.
Great Solo ..his touch is amazing.

met Chester at one of his clinics back in the early 90's, just after A Joyous Noise was released...you gotta be the man to tour with Genesis for decades...
when Phil hires you is cause your one of the best ......
And he's been hired for the biggest tours!
and Phil said Chester didn't even have to do an audition....says it all.
When Francis Vincent hires you ; you are yes one of the very best as Chester is

So much melodic expression and patience! Even most top tier drummers lack.
Name the top tier ones that lack it... ?
Chester Thompson has played B3 hammond and bass pedels for Tower of power and Carlos Santana ,Drums for Phil Collins and many many more
Very interesting. Thanks for mentioning.
@@davidcook5749 Different Chester Thompson
I went to one of his clinics in 85 right around no jacket required. He didn't even have a kit it was all snare exercises
It's all the feeling OF the room, LIKE a syc MOMENT ❤

"One size fits all" "Black market" "Second out" ect... Legendaire Chester !!!
chester the best. Sono italiano. Adoro la batteria. Chester è il mio modello di riferimento. La scuola di Zappa e gli anni con Phil ne hanno fatto un percussionista unico. Grazie
Great n 1 drummer in world bravoooooo❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊
Awesome drummer
The bus driver who being in the special crew made music history with a project called Roxy & Elsewhere. Unforgettable.
I am a fan
Un baterista que pocos conocen, solo para entendidos. Un baterista de gran técnica!
He came to my high school for a drum clinic once. Unfortunately, I was away at college and couldn't make it!! I still regret that.
Fantastic.
Great work with Ron kenoly
Great solo!
Love Chester! ... ❤️👍🙏x
Maravilhoso.... Toca muito
La fuerza exacta en el golpe. Maestro
Grande Chester
WOW!!!!
Héroe!
Love it so in my eyes
que imponente!!! se le va el palo al carajo y no pierde la presencia! eso me gusta!
A few of the biggest artists and groups hired sir Chester Thompson for playing drums...
Frank Zappa, Weather Report, Genesis, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, Santana, Bee Gees...
He belongs to the best.
Chester Thompson never played with Santana. That Chester who played with Santana is a keyboard player and was formerly from Tower of Power.
@@Dogdrum Chester Thompson did play with Santana. At one point both Chester Thompsons played for Santana. One on keyboards and the other on drums.
The most important Musician in The sound Of Genesis Live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Genio total que calidad, pero a pesar de su ya gran edad no perdio la magia.
The black Phil Collins.
The hell
how does he do it???????????????????????? great drummer
Wow!
Grande grande grande !!!!!!
chester the best
GREAT chatting with you. An inspirational human. All you cool groovy cats. Thanks. 😁☝👌👍🤘✌💖.
de los mejores!!*
This is Sir Chester please address this guy correctly from now on
CHESTER RULES
I always thought of him as a better drummer than Phil.
That's my story, and I'm "sticking" to it!
Grande, Genio !!!!
His snare is turned higher than his small Tom! But it blends well with his solo!
I like the high tuning, but the kick is distorted. Incredible solo 👍
top top top
And he said..he was only an "Employee"..
A Master.
he taught phil collins a great amount im in no doubt.
It's interesting that Phil Collins, one of the greatest drummers ever, even learned something too. Just goes to show that even the best learn something new.

How Chester failed to appear in the Rolling Stone Top 100 drummers is utterly beyond me (while dear old Philip Collins sneaks in in the 60'/70s!)
Hes got it.
Such a shame Genesis didn't utilize Chester one last time for their recent tour instead of Phil's karaoke son drummer.
did not need to be either or, should have had em both in the spirit of genesis always having two drummers live anyway.
Damn, Chester. Save some dynamics for the rest of us.
Bueno... nadie está exento a que se nos caiga por accidente una baqueta... Muy bien brother God Bless You
😍😍👍👍👍💪💪💪🙏🙏🙏
Un dès meilleur, voir le meilleur batteur du monde, après Phil Collins, pour moi !
***** les 2 sont les meilleurs ! :)
🤗
Not a drop of sweat.
One size fits all.
Why does this video have an ending???
