    I actually had a great time with friends in the campaign. The fact that we had to rush to fix repairs meant we had to sell and buy a lot of mechs and really cover each other’s backs when we went into an engagement unprepared. It was not easy but fun.

      I also had fun with the super short locked-in Kestrel campaign, mainly because MW5 turns into easy mode once you get a Lance of 200 tons or more, but the Kestrel campaign forced you to use whatever you had with no real idea of what would be next or how long you'd be locked in.

      Halo is better with friends, and nearly all the games are great. Playing with friends is a selling point because it can make slogs feel more satisfying. In MW5, you don't just feel like a lone pilot with some AI tagalongs, you feel like an actual lance, coordinateling fire, calling targets, and backing each other up.

    Going bankrupt/stuck with totally damaged mechs IS a feature, not a bug. Its part of what makes Mercenaries what it is, a setting in a future where there is huge resource and tech scarcity. its part of the charm, and appeal of it. Need to be able to deal with it to play.

    Most accessible source of lore IMO is still 'Tex Talks Battletech' series of RUclips lectures, especially the videos covering the death of Star League, the Civil War and Great Exodus, and the return of the Clans.
    I also heartily recommend the Battletech turn based strategy game, with either the BTA 3062, or Roguetech mods installed 👍

      @@Psykadea Even BTA makes a massive difference to the variety of mechs, weapons and vehicles. Roguetech cranks that up to 11 but it's also much more like a rogue-like so expect to die. Lots. 😁
      Both MASSIVELY enhance the vanilla experience which tbh is very limited in comparison.
      Just you wait until you have a good collection of clan mechs, rotary Gauss rifles, and get far enough to start lobbing 'Davy Crockett' nuclear rounds across the map (hint: Danger Close is much further than you think!)

Reason I got a flight stick. Reason I got a headset and voice command. Reason I got a gaming keyboard and mouse. I never bought so much crap because of a game save it be Mechwarrior!

    Hmm a few points (based purely on information available in game and not general battletech lore),
    1) The whole trigger point of the Fourth Succession war was the during the annual Galahad wargames (which was what you were part of for the first few missions) Hanse Davion and Melissa Steiner were married on Terra and during the wedding speech Hanse Davion announced the attack on the Capellan Confederation - this is detailed in the news articles even if you aren't doing the Kestral Lancers campaign.
    2) As a result of this you are part of an attack on Tikonov and then Tigress as part of a multi regiment attack. Its during the attack on Tigress that X goes missing (deliberately being vague due to spoilers)
    3) You are sent to retrieve X without support because support is already at your destination - your mission - as explained in the game - is to meet up with them and get support from them to retrieve X.
    4) The 'third party you encounter part way through this (again being vague for spoiler reason) are also previously introduced in the in game news items prior to the Kestrel Lancers dlc timeline and part of what they are doing is given away there. Furhter information is given at the end of the final mission.
    Note the final mission aftermath states that events are being deliberately kept under wraps which again fits in with lore - it neatly avoids the problem of events in the game contradicting information presented years ago in the novels etc.
    I wonder if (based on your review) you've not bothered reading any of the news articles which actually give clues to what is happening (e.g. a news article might describe a 'new' mech which you later come across and is a lot more dangerous than some of the npcs expect

  • @JPG.01
    @JPG.01 2 года назад +8

    You don't have to have an encyclopedic knowledge of the fourth succession war. All that story needs is for you to be moderately involved with the lore by reading the ComStar Newsfeed in game. It all starts with the FedCom accords in the 3020s.
    After the FedSuns and Lyran Commonwealth sign those, only a few years later the royal wedding is in the news. And First Price Hanse Davion's proclamation of the capellan confederation as a wedding gift. This wedding gift results in a short, high intensity conflict which is later dubbed the fourth succession war by the other major powers.
    The actual geopolitical reason for this war can later be seen on the Worldmap itself. Because this conflict moves some borders and creates a corridor to connect the Lyran Commonwealth with the Federated Suns to later become the Federated Commonwealth. If not for ComStar fuckery the Cappellans might have been wiped clean off the Inner Sphere and that would have been the best news ever.

    I picked up MW5 on the recent steam sale - base game plus expansions - at a healthy discount. For that price it's still a reasonably good bargain (especially with the basic set of Baradul approved mods 🙂). The campaign spoiled my first playthrough by forcing me to rush far too quickly from medium, to heavy and assault mechs - whilst also screwing up my plans for which sides to ally with. I would have definitely objected at full price, but as a bundle can just about overlook its limitations and drawbacks. I also resented being forced to make the decision to start the expansion based on very limited info without realising the consequences.
    In future playthroughs I will probably skip it entirely most of the time.

  • @Axehilt
    @Axehilt 2 года назад +3

    As a game designer, it's a bad idea anytime you take a game that's an open-ended sandbox and try to make a linear campaign with it. Just think how much worse Rimworld, Valheim, Stellaris, or M&B2: Bannerlord would be with a linear campaign!
    With some of those games (and also MW5), you definitely hear occasional feedback of players asking for a campaign. However that should always _always_ take the form of adding more dynamic events so that each playthrough tells a story unique to that player.
    For example nobody wrote that my Rimworld colony should save that pop star that crashlanded in a drop pod, or that she'd marry another colonist, or that _her father_ would attack our colony later, killing the husband of the popstar while dying in the attack, leaving her extra sad that everyone she loved just died, and causing her to burn the colony down in her angst. _Nobody programmed that!_ It happened due to dynamic events and interconnected systems.
    Linear stories are okay, they're not terrible. They have the potential to really speak in meaningful ways about the human condition (in ways that dynamic events sorta just _can't_ ). But if a game is already well down the path of open-ended sandbox, then it doesn't really make sense to redesign things into a completely different game; instead it's best to truly embrace the sandbox and add the sorts of systems proven to make the sandbox amazing: so add options for customizing your own characters/crew/pilots, and add tons of ways the universe itself can dynamically change (either things that just dynamically happen without your influence, or things that can change as a result of your influence).
    For MW5 that'd mean things like:
    * Going much deeper on Pilot progression, possibly allowing characters to specialize in a mech to the point where even if the mech itself is pretty mediocre the pilot's specialization makes it _more_ than worthwhile to hold onto that mech because they're a wizard in that thing.
    * Letting players influence the overall territory lines of the houses (by constantly winning fights for one side).
    * Adding lots of dynamic events
    * Strategic dynamic events might include things like the option to hire on some guy who brings a Battle Master 'mech to your lance, and wow that's a huge addition, but it turns out he stole the 'mech from some powerful enemies that end up attacking you later on. (But this doesn't always happen; sometimes a pilot legitimately joins you with their 'mech of choice.)
    * Battlefield dynamic events where sometimes you have an opportunity to save some farmers who'll be overrun by the invading enemies during those "holdout" missions (increasing rep significantly), or aforementioned assassins show up, or rebel friends show up to help you out when they weren't expected to. Also, your pilots sometimes have backstories relating to different factions, and I think it'd be great if their backstory is pretty friendly towards a particular faction that there's a chance of them giving up or outright turning on you if you fight their homeland (but the risk should obviously be signposted ahead of time, with them talking to you in the halls before the mission to voice their distaste).
    This doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of interesting systems that would speak to MW5's strengths, but it's just a few examples of directions that would've improved how the game felt.

    I played this game at launch and it was a disasterous 0/10 game. Literally no redeeming qualities. After 3-4 years of patches and fuck ton of polished mods however, i recently played it again and would give it acceptable 5-6/10. Game is still horrible compared to what we used to get. Any of the MW4 titles are miles better than this and as i hear it, MW2 and 3 is even better than 4 according to people who played it (im not that old so i never did). What i was suprised was how bad it was compared to MWO which came out from the same studio. They couldnt even replicate that which they made before. So im not really expecting much from next dlc from them, the Clans.

    similar to you i have no prior battletech lore knowledge. i also did not connect to the main story of: we got to revenge daddy, you know that guy you went to the shooting range with and know nothing about? yeah. he was so cool or whatever, let's get 'em. i thought i'd like fahad and then realized i like him less than running between him and the main console. to sum up. i play the game for the gameplay and that's about it. i play solo. the regular missions are far to easy to stomp in with coop unless it scales (which i don't know if it does). so i'd guess the kestrel lancers would be fun as a coop campaign, but as a solo it really is not. and as you said, if you import your prior save it def makes it way more doable but it also takes the stakes/limitations out of it. i did not mind that it was multimission contracts per se. i disliked it being forced on me like: do it now or do it never! am i the only one who feels like the hangar is far too small (at least by 8 slots)? yes you could tech out enough mechs in a related weight bracket to make it through a multimission contract. i keep a lance of 1-2 light mechs, 1 medium, 4 heavy and 4 assault mechs so i can mix and match the drop weight limitations to not have my lance be restricted to a certain difficulty rating, wihout running at least a 3 man lance. if i put the smaller or bigger mechs in cold storage to gear up for a x3 or x5 multimission contract not only does it strip the loadout but also the up to 5mil in cibills i have sunk into the upgrades. to work around the current system to take part in all there is to enjoy i would have to pay myself bankrupt or just not upgrade anymore.

    I went into Kestral Lancers expecting nothing, and was pleasantly surprised by a functionally decent story. It's not comparable to anything like MW3 or MW4, and there's basically no real features in the DLC that add anything. Honestly the DLCs up to this point feel like major game updates that were just turned into shovelware DLC. Like legitimately, all of the DLC should be free for this otherwise vaporware game.

    Your drop ship does not crash. They straight-up tell you why you can't leave the planet. Did you not pay attention to any of the dialogue?
    I feel like people poo poo on this game just to be like hey look at me guys I'm cool too. This game was made for people who are already fans of the lore.
    The newest DLC brings in the other mercenary factions like the Kell Hounds, Hansen's Roughriders, Wolf's Dragoons, Grey Death legion and so on. If you don't have the reaction of "Oh shit Jamie Wolf and Grayson Carlyle!?" Then this game isn't for you. You aren't the target audience. So therefore you kind of don't have a say and your opinion has no bearing. Especially since you got some massive details wrong, weren't paying attention to the story and then are like look guys there is no story here! I bet you don't even read the in-game news ticker either.
    And If you don't like games where you have to consult an outside source to get the full story I suggest you never play a FromSoftware game like Armored core, Dark Souls, or Elden Ring.
    Having that said yes this game isn't perfect. There are some things this game doesn't do well that modders eventually improved on. But having been in the industry I know there are a lot of time constraints and bullshit with investors and the suits. The developers on this game aren't the most talented of developers compared to other teams. But I can tell they tried to make a game set in a universe that spans like 8 generations of the families involved in all of the conflicts and drama.
    I think you kind of have a disingenuous and shitty take on this.

    • @Axehilt
      @Axehilt 2 года назад

      Really just depends on how the story is told. For example Star Wars (the original trilogy) mentions several outside events like the clone wars, but because knowledge of those events isn't required to enjoy the very well-told main story arc of those 3 movies, it was fine. Meaning: it was fine _long before_ the clone wars was explained at all. In fact I feel that it _adds_ to a universe to mention events in passing like this, since it alludes to a much richer lore than just what the audience is seeing in front of them. So then it's only bad to include that outside lore if it's required to actually enjoy/understand the main story; if that was the case, it's a complete disaster.

    It's almost like the universe was up for much more but they just *poof* ran out of money =D
    (nobody believes that btw, remember gold mechs? PGI has run their fans through the wringer scooping up every penny on the way.)

    Just bought the game with all dlc bundle, played it for the first time ever and didn't even notice that this was part of DLC content until half way through. Did not die on missions, only lost a few AI mechs and some components. How bad do you have to be to fail those missions when someone new to the game bulldoze those missions with the Centurion you get in the tutorial mission. Then go on RUclips and post a negative review because of your lack of skill. Keep in mind I'm pushing 40 and my reflexes and aiming ain't that good, and I still didn't have problems with progressing through the Kestral Lancers DLC parallel to the main story with no idea if I'm doing it correct or not.

    Alright, this was pretty hard to watch. Yes, the DLC is harder, but that level of difficulty is just right for someone who already finished the main campaign multiple times. The missions, new biomes, new game systems, QoL improvements, mechs etc. are great and you ignore all that because you sucked? That's the definition of salt, not a review.
    "I had to replay ThE enTIrE ThINg!!!11" - OMG someone give him a hug, that poor soul had to play a video game...

      Yeah i'm pretty sure the kestrel lancer missions happens at a point in time where a player would have already completed the main campaign.
      its possible to do it during the campaign but timeline wise this dlc happens at the very end so realistically unless the player is messing around one would already be at ethe end or have completed the main games campaign so by that point the player would already have all the experience necessary to go through higher level missions.

      @@Argonisgema I didn't mean you should play it with the savegame you have used for completing the campaign. I've played through it twice, once solo and once coop with 2 friends. Each time on a cold start. Yes, it's challenging, but not super hard like some other games...
