I'm Australian. I worked and lived in China for 5 years. When most people in the west talk about China they spend all their time telling me what they DON"T know! Martin is a breath of fresh air.
It is astonishing that the idea is still fresh for the western world after Mr. Jacques's efforts in so many years. The resistance to believe in the West is really something.
Very nice and diplomatic way to put it. But it is no longer acceptable and tolerable for the victims to pay the price of what the west "DON"T KNOW" about China.
Western Culture is "SELF centered"; Chinese Culture is "FAMILY centered" Having said that, West values "Human rights" centered on personal rights: "I dont care about you as long as I exercise my rights..." China values "Confucianism" centered on "Nation-Community-Family". "Chinese respect their parents, community, country. The government is responsible for the community; and parents are responsible for the family."
Family centered give me a goddamn break ! The only center there is within a family in china is Money. That is what decides who marries who ! If I give a bigger HongBao I can marry any girl I want. This is the biggest misunderstanding the West has ever told themself. So many Chines can't even take care of their own children because they don't know how to ! They even admit it themselves. Go ask
As a Chinese, Chinese media never said China will rule the world. China always just say we want same standard, want to be equally treated, mutual respect.

Thank you Mr. Martin Jacques. As a fellow Brit and Economist living in Shanghai for the last 12 years, I fully concur as a first hand witness that China has exceptional governance. I would add that the government here serves the people, and as you said, especially in the wake of this pandemic, enjoys a peoples mandate unheard of in the West. I will forever be grateful to the CPC and the brave front-liners for keeping me and my family safe from COVID19. China won the war on COVID19 against all odds only for the West to lose it despite the benefit of 2 months worth of hindsight. I wrote an article for some financial magazine back in 2010 entitled "China snapshot - All the right moves" where I wrote "The West needs to embrace China as a friend, and trust that as China takes its place as an economic powerhouse, it will also fulfill it's duties as a responsible global leader". This is true now more than ever before.
Communism is evil and will not win. The CCP released COVID 19 and lied to the world causing millions of deaths. The CCP jails dissidents; wipes out religions and has millions in concentration camps. The West will continue to dominate because it’s a free society and not an Evil dictatorship. The CCP cannot be trusted. Look at Hong Kong. Communism should be stomped our wherever it rears it’s ugly head.
@@ABritishRefugeeinChina very kind of you. I would love to visit one day. China is one of the great cultures, no doubt. They had post offices when my people were still living in caves. @@sgt.slaughter8170 Again, what you see through the Western media lens is a total fallacy. Nobody is dying here. There is no genocide, actual or cultural. There are more mosques in China than there are in the United States. There are Muslim streets in almost every city. Those “concentration” camps you hear about (which have been closed) were really schools to teach job and life skills as a better way to end terrorism compared to the Western way which is to invade or bomb.

I think the efforts of the Chinese government in many aspects is competent and is good for the people....however still you must beware of local corruption and incompetence ...in all systems good governance and fair justice is important ...formal democracy may not be necessary...but you must have some way peacefully to be able to remove incompetent leaders and the laws should be transparent and fair. I have seen nothing in China which I did not recognize from Europe....maybe in another historic period but still not uniquely Chinese.
One very important difference between the Chinese culture and the Western culture is religion. For thousands of years the Chinese don't have a religion. The most common belief system in China has been ancestral worship. Chinese Buddhism has also been very popular in China. But Buddhism is not an organized religion but rather a way of life in cultivating awareness of the self that is practiced on an individual basis rather than as a political movement. Buddha himself is regarded as a person, a man, and not a God. Any individual can be Buddha through practices in meditation and fasting. The Western culture, on the other hand, is predominantly superstitious, believing in an almighty monotheistic God. Even professor Jacques would describe China's sixth uprising as miraculous. One must realize that there is no such thing as a miracle. The Chinese don't believe in miracles, and they don't believe they are doing the work of God. They don't sit around and pray for manna to fall from the sky, or to punish others who don't believe in their superstition. While the Chinese believe in hard work and diligently aim at improving the lives of all mankind, at social justice, and at social good, Westerners believe they are chosen by God and they are entitled to all the rewards in life, as well as administering punishment of others for not worshipping their God. As a result, the three main monotheistic religions, the Christians, the Muslims, and the Jews have been fighting and killing each others for many centuries. And they supposedly believed in the same God, for crying out loud. Until the westerners can give up their superstition, they can never understand the Chinese culture. China is not their enemy. They are their own enemies. Confucianism and Taoism are the curses of China that led the Chinese into the century of humiliation by the western powers. Confucians are conformist and follow blindly ancient rituals and ancient tradition. Taoists, on the other hand, do nothing, Wu Wei, is their preferred attitude towards life. They both ignore science and they both are counter-revolutionary. It is not until the establishment of Communist China and the Cultural Revolution that China was able to defeat these two curses and start its way to modernization. The Chinese are still studying Confucianism and Taoism, not to follow them, but to remind ourselves our corrupted past, and hopefully never to make the same mistakes again. Well said. There are many smarter people than I am. I never thought harming any. But there are people like Tonya Harding. Some people in this country want to behave like Tonya Harding.
Well said and thank you so much Professor Jacques for your excellent analysis on the Chinese culture. My personal view is that Confucianism plays a major part on Chinese ways of life and has infiltrated into every individual since early education, in that, a minor must respect and love their seniors that encompasses we must xiaoshun (filial piety) our parents/grandparents/ancestors; a student to their teachers, a worker to their bosses, a citizen to their leaders etc, and this hierarchical respect structure applies not only just families, also to the entire society. It is this very education can summon a massive collective force and act as a unity from the country when this is needed, such as fighting an pandemic. To fully understand Chinese culture, one can spend a lifetime on the subject.
Confucianism is far more influential than commuism that just evolved in a very short historital period. The reason that CCP roots and proposes in China is that some comm theory help Confucianism to adapt in new Era. Martin is telling the very truth that western are all blinded by rhetorical terms.
It’s actually harder for me to understand the western aggression. It’s because of pride, religion, fear, anxiety? But I believe human has a bigger course than fighting with each other, and we will learn from each other and prosper together.
It is dependent on circumstance.......during the early periods of China you also had much aggression , The very construction of China depended on Qin aggression. The Europeans were not as isolated by nature as China is and war has more and less been a constant factor in shaping the European culture and diversity. China could build a wall and the neighbors were weaker but could take advantage of inner tensions to overthrow a dynasty.

Excellent analysis. Unfortunately the majority western politicians don’t understand the five thousand years of civilization and history of China. I truly admire Dr. Martin Jacques hard work and dedication. Can’t wait to see read his book.
@kar alb Hi, there are many historians and Han Chinese don’t believe Gengus Khan dynasty is part of Chinese history. They believed that it was an invasion from Mongolia. Probably that’s the reason it is not in Doctor Jacques’s books. It is controversial to this day.
The US don't understand, and don't give a krap about understanding China. The US government uses the human rights to portrait itself as an altruistic nation. But the US is the most hypocrite government in the world. It has done more bad than good. The US criticizes China dictatorship system, but they don't criticize Vietnam, and Saudi Arabia who have an Authoritarian and Totalitarian absolute Monarchy system. The US criticizes China bad treatment of Uyghurs, which is a lie. But don't criticize Israel oppression of the Palestinians in Gaza strip. That's HYPOCRICY
@kar alb Organ Harvesting ? Where did you read that? of course, from western media. You need to get better information. The west propaganda is similar to the Nazi era. They accuse and attack, but never provide evidence. Just source anonymous . Then, anyone can say anything they want. Theres no limit in lies. With due respect to Jacques, a very very important point has been overlooked to understand China. That is ,after the Century of Humiliation, China actually woke up to the fact that for all their proud history and culture, they are no match to smaller western nations because of technology advancement and social development. Actually the dream of many many Chinese is to go west....for studies ,travel or even settling down. In short ,a large population including the government ,actually admired and look up to the west. But all this is now TOTALLY DESTROYED by the Trump Bull in the China shop. The way the USA conducted themselves in the Trade War is absolutely shocking to Chinese values, the utterly unprincipled shameless behavior of the USA has made the USA totally despicable in the eyes of the Chinese (except antiChina Chinese like many Taiwanese or Falun Gong or Uighur separatists). The huge section of this once “admirers of the West “ is so disillusioned that Chinese overseas students and professionals are returning to China in droves and given up on the West and have realized there’s no room in western mind for peaceful coexistence. So China is now desperately on the path of self defense and self sufficiency .

The success of the Chinese Government is putting the people first, not politics! This is the principle of good governmentship - to serve its people and country
Pure rubbish!. CCP and PSB in China only think for themselves . but then again. socially? most Chinese have a one person thought for themselves without empathy for others around them. Chinese Government in China never puts anything first on people.
T M as you say 'most Chinese...' -indeed most people on earth are the same regardless of ethnicity or background. The second world wars clearly shows there are lots of Traitors in China but also many more who had fought and gave their lives for the country! CCP started off fighting against a corrupted government and landlords, much like the West was then against slavery. At least now CCP is developing and building up China and the people are benefiting from such. Of course no Parties or government is 'absolutely' perfect! As Chinese which in reality is not a single ethnical group but an integration of people of the land; yes we are proud of the culture but we, at least the recent two generations I know have experienced the destructive effect of colonial aggressions and have empathy for all other countries that have suffered the European Imperialism and and by the education we receive have no desire to let ourselves become anything close to imperialists that we despise.
Just as long as you are aware that imperialism comes in many flavours. In Europe, we had to endure Ottoman Imperialism not so long ago. So perhaps imperialism perpetuates imperialism... if so, it would be refreshing for China to break the cycle.

The one point that I would disagree with Mr Jacques is his statement that the west, by its colonial practises, is to "civilise" its colonies. That altruistic claim is just its propaganda to justify and glamourise its inhuman colonial policies and practises. Peel just below that supposed missionary objective and you will discover the wide ranging looting and raping of the human and material resources of the colonies that lasted for centuries; and arguably for some of the "former colonies" it is still on going to this very day; especially so of those that once France and Belgium colonised. And it is not wrong at all to say that all the previous coloniser countries build and developed their own states from the loots and riches they stole from their colonies. Just visit their museums to admire the loots and riches that were stolen and they are just a fraction of what were lost to the colonisers.
Not to mention they still owned large pieces of "private" land in the former colonies, that is, to get independence, you have to adopt their ruling systems & respect "private" properties ownership. Meaning, they can keep it.

What’s you said is so......great! 👍thank you🙏 I hope all leaders and ordinary people of Western countries can see your speech! You are great. You did very good job for all humans in the world!
The West needs to look East to learn the values of societal solidarity and virtue of collectiveness in crisis management. In Confucius societies, people are more mindful of their societal responsibilities and moral obligations to put community/national interests above self. This explains why in Asian countries, except India, people are more cooperative, organized and efficient in mobilising people and deploying resources to stamp out Covid-19 virus.
I think India share similar societal values as most of the other asian societies. As for the covid 19 issue, I think India just does not have the resources to handle it the way most other asian countries do. Besides that, indian politics vis a vis China led to its leaders refusing to acknowledge the success of how China handled the pandemic ditto most of the western countries, most prominently the rogue US regime.

As a Chinese and a native Hong Kong person, I love to see how average western people underestimate us. The more they overlook, the more opportunities we have. In Chinese history, those tremendously powerful ancient empires like Han, Tang and Ming dynasty were all failed because of arrogance and corruption. Back in the time, the technology is not greatly developed yet. The pacing is slow, so it takes 50-100 years to tears down an well-established kingdom. Now look at the modern days, we can clearly see the U.S. rapidly declining in every aspect. There were many people thinking that the China will not success, and yet, many of them are still thinking in that way. In fact, the speed of China's development is like a miracle.
According to both the PRC and ROC’s constitutions, yes, Taiwan is a province of China and the whole world is respecting that, especially in the UN, including USA, UK and Europe. Technically, the mainland and the island are still in a civil war. No treaty has been signed and they do not officially recognise each other.

Consider this: china is the (or one of the most peaceful) major civilization nation in the world throughout history. 1) invention of gunpowder don't go and conquer huge swaths of sovereign countries all over the world. But the europeans did. 2) they had the world's most advanced and largest warships in the world, and they distinctly did not sail halfway around the world to kill and colonise a territory there. But europeans did, wiping out millions of indigenous population in the americas. 3) china did not export political revolutions or social upheavals across the world. Periphery nations adopted aspects of chinese culture and language (korea, japan, vietnam), but it was unforced. But the europeans are the direct sole cause for the majority of the world's conflict when they venture out:- middle east conflict from the partition of the ottoman empire, the afican civil strives due to the partition of africa by european powers, the indian subcontinent conflicts due to colonial influences, the disintegration of south america due to european influence (again!). In conclusion: european (and westerm) actions causes almost all ot the world's current conflict and misunderstanding...and it is ironic that that selfsame nations is accusing china of doing to the world right now.

@@legpol Not true. If you do your homework, you will learn that, long before Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism emerged in China, the ancient Chinese worshipped a single Creator God, Shangdi 上帝, the Supreme Lord of the Great Heaven, who could not be represented by any image made by human hands. Hence the Temple of Heaven (more correctly translated as the Altar to Heaven) in Beijing has no graven images but only a plaque with the inscription 皇天上帝,the Supreme Lord of the Great Heaven. Over the centuries, the worship of Shangdi became corrupted and overtaken by Confucianism, Taoism and later Buddhism. There is research and evidence in the meanings of ancient Chinese characters, that the ancient Chinese likely worshipped the same God as the ancient Hebrews ie the God of the Bible.

*All Chinese, especially the overseas Chinese, should read this article.* *The oppression of a civilization:* *The world was turned into an ocean of colonies of subject people during the few centuries of ‘friendly’ European conquest. The Africans were turned into slaves, the natives of both Americas massacred. The ancient civilization of China was crippled and dismantled into pieces. After the Western powers brought down the decadent Qing Dynasty with the might of modern firearms, the Chinese civilization was turned into a pariah race of nothingness by the invaders in their country. The foreigners did not bring anything good but oppression, bullying and raiding China ’s wealth and dignity by all kinds of deceptive means, and by the barrel of the gun. The Japanese joined in and even thought of conquering and ruling the whole of China as their colony.* *There was a moment of salvation when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour and declared war on the Western power. China and its peasant soldiers were needed to open another front to sap the fighting power and resources of the Japanese. A large part of the Japanese Imperial Army was held down in China by the peasant soldiers. History would not be the same if the Japanese could run through China without resistance and conquer the whole of Asia.* *After the war there was a brief moment of equality for China as a key member of the Allied Forces that fought against the Japanese. Chiang Kai Shek was seated with the Allied leaders like Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt in Potsdam and Cairo to divide the world among the victorious Allied Powers. China was lucky to have its lost territories back. Chiang was more like a flower vase, inconsequential, and would not be deserving of any war loot. His presence among the leaders of the big powers was a consolation that gave China a little recognition as a big nation.* *This little moment of dignity did not last long when Mao Zedong defeated Chiang and China adopted communism as a state ideology. This turn of event led to a renewed and concerted Western effort to brand and condemn the Chinese civilization as peasants, rogues, dumb, uncivilized, aggressive and the pariahs of the human race, a good for nothing race that was lack of talent, unproductive and unimaginative, and unfit to join the advanced nations of the West. This was the hopeless China painted by the West. They kept repeating the misinformation daily in all western media, like they are doing to North Korea today that the whole world simply believed so. Chinese are useless, Chinese are lame, Chinese are bad.* *Cold Wars, containment policies, encirclement, depriving China of its rightful seat in the UN, blocking China from joining international organizations like the WTO and the Groupings of rich nations, were history now. In the last 40 odd years, China came storming back on its own despite all the sanctions and barriers and threats against its rise as a nation and the Chinese people as a civilization, old, ancient, but not useless and remote of talents.* *Throughout the two hundred years of Western oppression and suppression, the Chinese civilization was not allowed to surface, no opportunity to break out and be the equals of other nations. The Chinese civilization was down and out, the Chinese in despair. Many Chinese had doubts in themselves, and were ashamed to be Chinese. The Westerners reinforced this belief by sneering at them, contributing negative literature furiously to debase the Chinese, discriminated against them in practically every human endeavour and industry. In the USA there were racist laws forbidding the Chinese from higher skill jobs. The image and perception of useless and untalented Chinese became a self fulfilling prophecy. The Chinese civilization was a joke, a condemned race that was lacking in industry and innovation.* *On its own, slowly and steadily the Chinese rebuilt their nation and their civilization, with little foreign talents and assistance, China has overtaken Japan and is closing in on the US as the number Two world power, economically and militarily. They have proven that they could match the West in every field of industry. The oppression and suppression of a civilization have failed, and a revitalized China has assumed its rightful place as a proud nation among nations. The Chinese civilization is no longer to be spitted at, to be kicked around by the Western powers or by teeny weeny little Asian states. It is now a force to be reckoned with and to be respected on its own merits.* *The tag of being the Sick Man of Asia, a semi colony of the West, a broken country with nothing, no inventions, no modern industries, no talents except poverty and all the trappings of a poor and backward third world country vanished over a few decades. There is renewed pride as a people, a nation and a civilization in the new China . A phoenix has risen from the ashes. There is no turning back. The Chinese have found their way back and will leap frog over the West in science and technology and in all things, while the West are still trying to restrain their advances by hook and by crook.* *Today, the overseas Chinese are also starting to rediscover themselves, their pride and dignity as a respectable people. They too find some renewed confidence that they are not rubbish and useless as the West wanted to hole them in, to be bullied by even little third world people, to be told to go home in western countries. They too share the pride of an ancient civilization seeking a second chance in renaissance, to achieve in whatever they seek to do, to be a respectable people and civilization on par with the best in the world. They no longer lower their heads in shame as they go about their lives. They are standing tall, heads and shoulders to the Western civilization with the knowledge that they are just as good if not better. The Chinese civilization is reviving and will no longer be oppressed and suppressed again.* *We can all benefit from a short history lesson of mankind and their actions on earth and the generations to come!* *AFTER READ PLEASE SHARE WITH ALL YOUR CHINESE FRIENDS NEAR AND FAR*
Martin's points about China, even if not 100% correct, is a breath of fresh air compared to the mainstream western narratives circulating in the global media. It's important to get all sides of the story and develop critical thinking this day and age. Ray Dalio is also another great person that understands China really well.
Martin’s talks actually inspired me, who grew up in China and educated with Chinese view of history, the idea of differences between State, Country, and Nation. I tend to mess them up as one idea before I heard his talkings.
it is not the system but the actual governance that matters. a democracy with irresponsible governance is worse than an authoritarian with caring governance which benefits its citizens and the whole world.
This. Also, while (arguably) a virtue of democracy is the ability to kick bad government out, it's a very very poor method of appointing competent government. As we can see.
The way I see it is that to the Americans' benefits, years back when they moved manufacturing to China they called it globalization. To take up this responsibilities, Chinese worked very hard to meet all requirements and sacrificed some parts of the country with pollution. The Chinese have no complains, many young people moved out from their villages to cities for these opportunities, they left behind their children with their parents. Over 30+ years of hard work, Chinese succeeded and started to have their own advancement but the USA simply won't allow it and started smearing at China about stealing jobs from their country. There is no point of attacking China, the only way is to compete fairly for mutual benefits.
I love this talk. Thank you so much for your words. I am an enthusiast of China myself. Have lived there for various years, studied the language and their philosophy (including confucianism). I have to say that I also love China, I have fallen in love with the people and their culture, totally in love. I also do believe that China is a "treassure grove" from which humanity can learn SO MUCH. The only negative aspect that I find important to point out is one related to why so many people are loosing trust in China. Just as Mr. Jacques said, "20 years back people were curious about China, saw it as a place of opportunities, but now they are growing distrustful." Regarding this I have o say that I have met too many people who have got robbed by Chinese. And this has a cultural and political explenation. On the cultural side, the general environment in China is very focused on making money. Money is nearly the most important objective in people´s mind at the moment. Even more so than morality (to a certain extent). And this makes it more viable for people to rob, in order to make money. And even more so if the person who they rob is a foreign businessman who will find it hard to sue them in a new business/legal environment. And this brings me to the other point, the political side. I´m sorry to say but the previous president of China Hu Jintao was too loose in the policive and discipline side of government. People say the government encouraged people to copy foreign products in order to learn how to manufacture, and the policy of forced technology transfers is not too far from this kind of mindset. In legal terms foreigners are said to always loose in the courts (but I cannot go as far as to afirm this with as much certainty as I do affirm the afore mentioned statements). If we unite these two past things, a culture in which money is king, and a government which is very leanient to admit development over morality, then we have the recipe for a problem. And I dare say that many of the people who I know who feel distrustful about China, are people who have been robbed by Chinese. In my country we have a saying: "That sounds like a Chinese story", it means: it´s a lie. As a conclusion I have to say that I agree with how fascinating China is. How beautiful a country, people and history lies there. I also totally agree that there is too much lack of information that harms humanity. But I also have to talk about the down-side, like the fact that I feel afraid of saying this over the internet where I am supposed to have free speech, and the fact that I myself have got robbed by a Chinese "friend". Best to all,
Hi Martin! Greetings from Montreal. I apologize for not having checked you out until only recently. What an awesome, extraordinary work you seem to have been doing! For sure I will get your book this weekend (although Amazon 'Prime' won't ship it here....aaaargh...I still want the paper back rather than the Kindle). I will be in touch with you frequently. @@meriliu8688 ??? History? What you mentioned history is not the whole history, it is just a moment of history. Chiang Kai Shek is a loser in history. History is written by the heroes and people. Chinese history is written by the Chinese having nothing to do with the Americans.

I Enjoying listening to your talk on the topic of China and your personal views. You have given insight into those who hate China. Hope some will help themselves to know China more and make the whole world a better place for all. Thank you, Sir.
The future of the West will be very bright with more people like Martin Jacques...People who don't just see the glass as half full but half empty as well....
May the love and the peace of Jesus be with us.
As a football fan myself and live in the UK for over 20 years from China now. I have always told my western friends. A football game or any other team sports is played in a socialism way and a good team is usually the most disciplined team with talent of course. And China is in fact exactly running this way. No wonder China is doing well in the last 30-40 years despite the 1.4B huge population and the future is still looks bright.
Revolution is not a game of football. There is plenty of bloodshed and people die in a revolution. The Chinese Revolution is a continuous and never ending struggle for social justice and social good. We don't rest on our laurels. These are the thoughts of the great Chairman Mao. Long live Chinese Communism !!! Long live the thoughts of the great Chairman Mao !!! May the love and the peace of Jesus be with us.
To you sir thanks for a sacrificial job and my hope is not only to see China as the greatest nation but seeing humanity coming as one and enjoy our short life in this world
Thank you for this Summit, and for Martin’s explanation. It’s human nature to see other people through your own bias, perspectives, mindsets etc. But, we won’t get anywhere if we all persist in this way. There will be no innovation, no new discoveries, no advancement if we all stubbornly refuse to have an open mind, let alone peace as we will always have conflicts.
Thank you Professor Jacques. I am an Australian who has lived in China for six years. The government and the people of China have managed the Covid19 epidemic extremely efficiently. We are grateful to the front line workers who risked their lives to look after the folk in Hubei and protect the people of China. The Chinese system of government is imbued with the Confuscian ethics and cares for its people. The Australian system of government is not bad but far weaker . The US system of government is absolutely appalling - a disgraceful example of a democracy dominated for the most part by super wealthy self serving capitalists with no interest in the well being of its people.
They have a big society test launched in Xiongan area where 150 kilomiters from Beijing. What they said they try to establish an 5M community with high-tech, highly organized, people good earning and happy, no corruption and high efficiency, it is a very ambitious plan. If it is successful, then it can expand to other cities, which other countries can also copy with China help. Let us see in next 20 years what happend with this new city.
There is one other country that has that kind of recurring superpower history, and that's Iran. It's not quite as old as China, but it has a similar civilizational state identity that goes back two and a half millennia. Honorable mention should also go to Egypt which is older than China and Persia and had a longer run, but hasn't seen relative superpower status since the Fatimid Dynasty. Western civilization has regularly produced superpower status, but it hasn't been locked geographically.
In Chinese culture, 家 means home/family, 大家,literally means big/many homes/families. We are all connected. That is collectivism in the West name, which is not very accurate in fact. It is more than than.

Between the family and an individual, the family is always priority......this is also very Taoism way of thinking......when you are just a small part of an organism, need be humble and respectful to the natural rules which is functioning and the others’ benefits/needs......when the whole is balanced and secured, then individual can grow/flourish......
Well said Prof. Chinese place relationship as something very important in life. That is why it is foolish for some countries to taint their relationship with China when China play a more and more important role globally.
China has no intention to rule the world. We just wanna develop our own country, making people live better and establishing a fair and harmonious society. As a Chinese, I don’t care if China is the leader or not, but I do recommend foreigners to pay more attention to our inclusive culture, which is really unique, extensive and profound.
Let go of prejudice. Respect and understand each other. The Chinese believe that only in this way, everyone will benefit. Instead of taking a person as a unit. This is the teaching of our elders.
I have enjoyed all your talks, just curious about what you think about Tiananman Squre incident in 1989. I am from Hong Kong and have emigrated , I understand the government would not tolerate dissent when the country was still in the process of economic revival, if China can get this straightened out, I think the western world have no argument against it. BUt it really doesn't matter to the Western bloc as they are set against China and throw their alliance to try to suppress China's rise. So, I salute to the Chinese people who have enjoyed more freedom and improvements to their lives, they have earned it and we should respect them for their hardwork, better to work hard in China than be relegated to menial labours in the west and be insulted by racial slurs in this pandemic.
This article will provide some insight into the the so called Tiananmen massacre. I can't believed that I've been lied to all these years. worldaffairs.blog/2019/06/02/tiananmen-square-massacre-facts-fiction-and-propaganda/

@@Jopa955 I'm not. But you are correct that authoritarian regimes have also used the veil of communism in the west. Karl Marx (which I would concider western communism and I presumed op was referencing) thought communism could only start in Germany. In all other countries it would fail, which it did due to authoritarianism. China's current communism has very little to do with Marx's ideas.

But I believe human has a bigger course than fighting with each other, and we will learn from each other and prosper together.
we cant prosper together. We send to china 60% of all world resources. SO WHOLE SYSTEM NOW ASK ME TO COMMIT MY KIDS 60% OF RESOURCES.
Because your president goes to one country attime then changes his help mow hes back to China. I dont understand him
Very informative confusus is that like buddist with the ten commandments I've always believed the same if they were expansion Japan wouldn't have never oppressed the people of China and Korea a few hundred years ago

Have you noticed that most Chinese students return to China upon completion of their oversea studies. I was one. Chinese are working so hard to learn from the west, are westerns learning anything from China ?

Martin actually said that Westerns believe that they use the military power to “occupy” the world and need to “civilize” the world.
That is the western aggression. Think about native Americans. They were basically wiped out due to lack of development and organization.

*The world was turned into an ocean of colonies of subject people during the few centuries of ‘friendly’ European conquest. The Japanese joined in and even thought of conquering and ruling the whole of China as their colony.*
*There was a moment of salvation when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour and declared war on the Western power. China and its peasant soldiers were needed to open another front to sap the fighting power and resources of the Japanese. A large part of the Japanese Imperial Army was held down in China by the peasant soldiers. History would not be the same if the Japanese could run through China without resistance and conquer the whole of Asia.*
*After the war there was a brief moment of equality for China as a key member of the Allied Forces that fought against the Japanese. His presence among the leaders of the big powers was a consolation that gave China a little recognition as a big nation.*
*This little moment of dignity did not last long when Mao Zedong defeated Chiang and China adopted communism as a state ideology. Chinese are useless, Chinese are lame, Chinese are bad.*
*Cold Wars, containment policies, encirclement, depriving China of its rightful seat in the UN, blocking China from joining international organizations like the WTO and the Groupings of rich nations, were history now. In the last 40 odd years, China came storming back on its own despite all the sanctions and barriers and threats against its rise as a nation and the Chinese people as a civilization, old, ancient, but not useless and remote of talents.*
*Throughout the two hundred years of Western oppression and suppression, the Chinese civilization was not allowed to surface, no opportunity to break out and be the equals of other nations. The Chinese civilization was a joke, a condemned race that was lacking in industry and innovation.*
*On its own, slowly and steadily the Chinese rebuilt their nation and their civilization, with little foreign talents and assistance, China has overtaken Japan and is closing in on the US as the number Two world power, economically and militarily. It is now a force to be reckoned with and to be respected on its own merits.*
*The tag of being the Sick Man of Asia, a semi colony of the West, a broken country with nothing, no inventions, no modern industries, no talents except poverty and all the trappings of a poor and backward third world country vanished over a few decades. There is renewed pride as a people, a nation and a civilization in the new China . A phoenix has risen from the ashes. There is no turning back. The Chinese have found their way back and will leap frog over the West in science and technology and in all things, while the West are still trying to restrain their advances by hook and by crook.*
*Today, the overseas Chinese are also starting to rediscover themselves, their pride and dignity as a respectable people. The Chinese civilization is reviving and will no longer be oppressed and suppressed again.*

Well said
Martin's points about China, even if not 100% correct, is a breath of fresh air compared to the mainstream western narratives circulating in the global media.
Thanks doc... every time I listen to you, I learn new things.
Best to all,
I dare say if as a foreigner you have feelings of being robbed by the Chinese, this feeling is very much mutual
Godspeed
I have shared this educational video. I learned a lot from it! Thank you Martin Jacques! 👏🏻
Dear Sir, 台湾 also called "The Republic of China", so it is also a part of China, not another nation. BTW, I respect your mind. Bravo!
The West is JEALOUS & ENVIOUS of China's rise, their failure to catchup may lead to war.
Long live the Republic of China, Taiwan.
Long live China!Taiwan Province will come back to her mother mainland anyway.
Go study history How Chiang Kai Shek drew the china territories & approved by America!
@@meriliu8688 ??? History? What you mentioned history is not the whole history, it is just a moment of history. Chiang Kai Shek is a loser in history. History is written by the heroes and people. Chinese history is written by the Chinese having nothing to do with the Americans.

Blind? I think its the dumb leading the dumber followed by the dumberererer 🤣
It is very refreshing to listen to an articulate speaker who does not litter his speech with loads of crutch words. They are still there but not so much as to affect his presentation.
even back in communist brothers days of USSR, Russians didn't bother to learn about China culturally... it's a blind spot of feeling self superiority perhaps.
Thank you for speaking the truth 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼. I am from Macau and we here haven’t had any inside cases because we listen and we all were willing to give up a lot to control during the lockdown. Wish everyone well and hope the virus will be gone.
I never thought I could sit through 42 minutes of political lecture. I must be dead of bored. I were dead wrong. Excellent job, Jacques !
As a Chinese grew up in the Chinese culture but getting Western education, I am impressed that Mr Jacques can know so much and so deeply about Modern and ancient Chinese culture. I am going to search for more videos from him, just to learn more.
A most easy to understand and enjoyable to listen to lecture by the schorler Martin, thanks!
I hope more people could watch this!
Hi Martin, many thanks for the great work you have been doing, much appreciated.
I’m a Chinese,i know China is not perfect, but I have to say professor Martin is deeply know Chinese people’s nature.
God bless the Chinese system, with great leader like xi jinping, from Yemen

They have a big society test launched in Xiongan area where 150 kilomiters from Beijing. What they said they try to establish an 5M community with high-tech, highly organized, people good earning and happy, no corruption and high efficiency, it is a very ambitious plan. If it is successful, then it can expand to other cities, which other countries can also copy with China help. Let us see in next 20 years what happend with this new city.
A lot to think about from that discussion. Difficult to run away from the facts.
It's good to know more about another country, not just China. Knowing more will make you an informed person.
Martin Jacques........thanks for the truly remarkable in-depth analysis of China. Today I have gained an invaluable lesson on China and the West.
In Chinese culture, 家 means home/family, 大家,literally means big/many homes/families. We are all connected. That is collectivism in the West name, which is not very accurate in fact. It is more than than.
大家 also means us collectively

Very well said with a lot of passion and humility. China and the world needs more voices like yours
Dr Martin is really an outstanding & learned personality. Admirable
The West has to be realistic and accept what Martin Jacques says.
State and families, Chinese always think state first
if a man die, where did go the own human rights
Very interesting speech by Matin Jacque.

Can I just add one more thing to what Martin said? Communism is from the west not Chinese!
he has said the CCP model is quite different from Soviet one.
@@nanyanguo1 soviet one is not the western one either ;-) Western one was a democratic one instead of the authoritarian Maoistic and Stalinistic traditions of China and Russia.
@@selwynrenard ur wrong. Look up Yugoslavian model, greetings from there :)
I fully agree with Mr Jacques. This man is honorable and fair. At the end of the day, you (countries) should do what works for you in order to achieve a form of modernity that is truly good for your own people but not the expense of weaker nations. Every people not just the top 10 percent. I look forward to that day when East and West (or West and East) can truly treat each other with mutual respect and honor, working together for the betterment of mankind. There are so many challenges ahead (climate change, future pandemics, poverty, extremism etc) that could best approached by all. There is not a moment to lose!
As a Chinese, I have heard the same opinion in history books about 19th century ,which says we must open our minds to understand westerns. so I guess it is "天道轮回"
