@@nmarineau10 I lowered the quality of the picture and it seemed to help. The picture does show up but I still have scrambled lines at the beginning. Only thing I can figure is maybe it's the colors in the picture.
June, 2018 in a US Kenwood ddx9703s this still works great! You need to follow the instructions exactly, including image format. EXACTLY. I also updated to the current firmware prior to the start screen update process. Thanks for taking the time to make and share this video!

Thanks for the tip! It took me about a dozen tries on the double-double + single-single tap. Seems the unit is very sensitive about precise placement of touches. So glad to be rid of that stock splash screen. Cheers!

I got the image loaded into the unit but before the image comes on, the screen is scrambled for about 3 seconds then the image shows, what has happened here?.
Thanks so much for showing this first off. I just did it and for some reason at first it gives a slightly scrambled version of my bmp file for 4 secs before showing the correct image for 2 secs. Is there a way to fix this? I also noticed the wallpaper customizer in the menu is there a video for how to change that?
@@floydian4evr hey! In my case I used photoshop and found out that I had the wrong bit depth ( not 16bit) After I didn’t get it with PS I used an online web site to get exactly the format that is shown in the link! Hopefully helped

Just tried this on DMX-7017DABS and using the settings shown on website I just get a small line of coloured pixels along the bottom and then a small logo in centre of screen not full screen image as expected Help

I just upgraded to a DDX9906XR and will be looking to do this. I currently had a DDX9903S which I had for a few years and I changed the startup screen on that. It is important that you use the proper USB input as only one of them will work for this.
RYTHMIC RIOT I have the same unit. Using Gimp I’m getting the distorted image upon start up followed by the correct image. I originally did it in paint and it was displaying 4 smaller images across the bottom before the image loaded correctly. I’ve since reverted back to the stock Excelon image.
Resurrecting an old thread, i follow these instructions and get to the menu with usb plugged in but u get a red screen with the letters NG in the middle. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Ddx6904s

If anyone has any troubles try using GIMP for your images. I was using paint on Windows 10, and my headunit was doing weird thing with the image. Used GIMP and it just worked. In gimp you need to export as BMP, choose location and click export. that will open a new window where you can set your options, under 16bit BMP select "R5 G6 B5" as the type. Gimp did a better jobs with the colours than paint.

I know this is an old video, I just wanted to provide a little info for others. I have the DDX 9905s and basically follow the instructions here. The ONLY different is to change the pixels to 1280x720. I used GIMP for this process. It’s so easy to use
Thanks for this tip, I just got this unit today and was going to use my old splash screen for my older Kenwood. The resolution was smaller than the 720, I just went into Photoshop, raised it to 1280x720. Saved the BMP using the same settings. Added the Android Auto and Carplay logos and it looks AMAZING! Did have trouble touching the corners because I have fat fingers. lol

you need to format the usb using cmd, not the right-mouse Format under windows: Step 1. In Windows 10, for example, type cmd in the search box, you can get the best match called Command Prompt. Right-click on it and choose Run as administrator. Step 2. On the Command Prompt window, type diskpart and press Enter. Step 3. Type list disk and press Enter. According to the list disk information, check which disk is your USB flash drive. For example, disk 2. Step 4. Now type select disk 2 and press Enter. Step 5. Type clean. Wait some time for disk erasing. Step 6. Type create partition primary and press Enter. Step 7. After diskpart successfully created the specified partition, type format fs=ntfs and press enter. If you prefer other file system formats, change the command ntfs to the desired one such as fat32, exfat, etc. Step 8. Type assign to create a drive letter to the flash drive.
I struggled for a while to find a way to create the proper format .bmp for my recent Kenwood DMX9706S. Windows 10 based, and the default .bmp's coming out of the typical photo editors caused the distorted "static" image described by others. Solution: 1) Download free open source image editor imagemagick from imagemagick.org/ 2) In it’s install directory is a utility “convert”. Create a link to that utility and move link into your Kenwood directory. 3) In a Windows cmd shell, convert the desired image into the 16 bit BMP format (5,6,5) as follows: convert your_image.bmp -define bmp:subtype=RGB565 image1.bmp where ”your_image.bmp” is the desired image that isn’t in the right format for Kenwood 4) Install the image as describe by the rest of the Carbon Car instructions
I have the DNX893S. Is there any way to get rid of the agree screen that needs to be accepted every time? What a brain-dead design. I find it hard to believe someone thinks this prompt needs to be accepted every time?? Kendwoood guys, how about an agree screen for every time you take a breath--will that make you feel secure? So I looked this up online and it looks like this a setting that is available on a lot of Kenwood units for year. I haven't tried the DDX916WS as thats last years model but I tried the new one not a problem. Try making the image at 921 x 480 pixels and then crush it down to 800x480 That should fix it. If you need we can always restore to original Kenwood image I have a patch to do that also :D
We have tried it on all new models it works fine. You can restore to original kenwood image if you need, we haven't tested older models like the DDX916WS so not sure on those.

Entire procedure worked perfectly on DDX9704S head unit. Hardest part was tapping the corners correctly.

After pressing the corners in order, all the options were grayed out except Initialize Factory Default and R-CAM Guideline Parameter.

GIMP did the trick for me too. Definitely an easy fix if your image shows distorted or with crazy colours.
Yeah paint did crazy colours for me aswell, Subaru logo went green

If you rename the code in the txt. File to 0000 and run the process again, you can actually change it back to the original logo.

you need to format the usb using cmd, not the right-mouse Format under windows:
Step 1. In Windows 10, for example, type cmd in the search box, you can get the best match called Command Prompt. Right-click on it and choose Run as administrator.
Step 2. On the Command Prompt window, type diskpart and press Enter.
Step 3. Type list disk and press Enter. According to the list disk information, check which disk is your USB flash drive. For example, disk 2.
Step 4. Now type select disk 2 and press Enter.
Step 5. Type clean. Wait some time for disk erasing.
Step 6. Type create partition primary and press Enter.
Step 7. After diskpart successfully created the specified partition, type format fs=ntfs and press enter. If you prefer other file system formats, change the command ntfs to the desired one such as fat32, exfat, etc.
Step 8. Type assign to create a drive letter to the flash drive.

I struggled for a while to find a way to create the proper format .bmp for my recent Kenwood DMX9706S. Windows 10 based, and the default .bmp's coming out of the typical photo editors caused the distorted "static" image described by others. Solution:
1) Download free open source image editor imagemagick from imagemagick.org/
2) In it’s install directory is a utility “convert”. Create a link to that utility and move link into your Kenwood directory.
3) In a Windows cmd shell, convert the desired image into the 16 bit BMP format (5,6,5) as follows:
convert your_image.bmp -define bmp:subtype=RGB565 image1.bmp
where ”your_image.bmp” is the desired image that isn’t in the right format for Kenwood
4) Install the image as describe by the rest of the Carbon Car instructions

I find it hard to believe someone thinks this prompt needs to be accepted every time?? Kendwoood guys, how about an agree screen for every time you take a breath--will that make you feel secure? These guys are useless, they never reply to any comments as you can see, My unite is stuck with a scrambled image like this companies' service.
So I looked this up online and it looks like this a setting that is available on a lot of Kenwood units for year. I tried it on my DDX916WS and this happened.

Any ideas, I tried with 2 different images same issue. Followed the steps exactly. 800x480 16bit image1.bmp
I haven't tried the DDX916WS as thats last years model but I tried the new one not a problem.
Try making the image at 921 x 480 pixels and then crush it down to 800x480
That should fix it.
If you need we can always restore to original Kenwood image I have a patch to do that also :D

We have tried it on all new models it works fine. You can restore to original kenwood image if you need, we haven't tested older models like the DDX916WS so not sure on those.
i am having all sorts of issues can someone do a video of the process as they are doing it so others that are not so technical can follow step by step either on photo shop or gimp

Did this on a DNX576S; same procedures and worked! I'm curious why the screen shows for a few seconds, then goes black, then I see the 'agree and continue' screen. Any thoughts on how to retain the customized image from boot up until the agree page?
Some people have been asking about "NG" while loading. I saw this when I attempted to use a JPG and not a BMP. I went back in and modified the image from JPG to the proper dimension BMP and it gave me the blue OK screen.
I've seen a number of other posts asking how to get the factory kenwood screen back. I thought I'd share in case someone is looking here. Change the version number from 9876 to 0000 and your kenwood image will return.
