We've always seen 6x6 amphibious vehicles around such as the Argo and now the Max II, but we've never worked on one or really ridden one. They are six wheel drive, with six aggressive tires, and the ability to float (theoretically). The Max II 6x6 should make a good off road amphibious vehicle! In today's video, we repair this Max II 6x6 and test drive it off road. The results are surprising.
Thanks for Watching!

First time working on a 6x6! Who knew we'd have so much fun getting stuck😁
That thing reminds me of when I tried to make an anphibous power wheels go kart😂
Way to much air in the 6x6 tires.
Yall need one for the pond
It needs the trax to help in the mud water and soft sand😂
It needs the tires on it the right direction
Man you just can't beat a Honda ATC!
Also, Ace turned out to have a bad relay and loose plug wire, and the 6x6 is a BEAST in the woods and on dry land. Scary fast once the clutches open up😂
Why in the hell did you use epoxy on the gas tank when a heated rod or soldering iron would have repaired it FOREVER by melting the plastic together?
@@phil463I've done that works pretty well I'm guessing he was scared about it or maybe the fact that he drilled it and wanted to stop the crack from spreading maybe made it a little bit more difficult for him to be able to just heat up and lay the plastic over
Hmmm.
The 6x6 DEFINITELY needs a bigger engine, and a forward-neutral-reverse gearbox on each side would _drastically_ improve steering. Considering that, depending on exactly what's in there, a classic VW Beetle engine is 2x-3x the HP, a better engine shouldn't be much of a challenge. The gearboxes, though... thaaat might get a bit 'interesting', although I kind of wonder, they make little planetary-gear reverse gearboxes you can add onto GY6-style Chinese scooter engines, and those use a spline-shaft on one side and a sprocket on the other... I can't tell you how much punishment they'll take, considering those engines are almost always 125cc or 150cc and thus... not exactly "all that" ;) but I _can_ tell you that they're dirt cheap gearboxes for what they do, and it'd be a great video to find out just how far you can push em.
Put the right tires and the tred of the tires all have to be facing the right direction it would of went better.
@@laserhawk64it doesn't need a bigger engine.
I love how “will it start?” videos have become “will it float?” Or “will it fly?”
Seeing Daddy Kevin pushing Little Ike around the yard in his Tiny Tank just makes my heart melt.
I have owned 2 6x6's and one thing I did learn was that it is important to have all 6 tire treads pointed the same way
Yeah, I noticed that immediately and was wondering about that. Every vehicle I've every driven with that type of tire that was usually very important...
My dad brought an Argo home in the mid 70s when I was around 5. Every trip out, we either got stuck or threw a chain, so you guys just brought back some real memories.
I'm a 6-Wheeler person only because of the epic laughter we all got from this video. Thank you so much guys!!!! God I wish Dalton was there from PoleBarnGarage, it would be a even funnier to hear his dry humor takes on everything :-) Get home safe guys!
You can see Kevin get more and more drunk through the river running as times goes on 😅
Whattt nooooo
@@JunkyardDigsit was great content and that's just what we do with friends on a river day
17:28 That's the best quality engine you guys have worked on on this channel. Should get one of those 18hp boxers and build a kart around it.
They should find one of the 46ci 22 hp and use it. You can make a stroker engine too, but I can't remember what combo of piston, crank, and rods to use.
@@jonathancrotts2862 Mm. They run super smooth, have great carbs already, and if one wants them to sound mean af they take nicely to header.
Finally a long video. Since you guys went to one video a week I’ve been needing more!!! I LOVE IT!!!
I wish you'd leave the literal highlights out of the intro.
Omg this is like a series from Top Gear 😂 this blew out the dust from my giggle box 😂
You should make some Aero handguards for the land speed bike. Those handlebars sticking out probably aren't great for airflow.
Love those Briggs opposed twins. They don't turn much rpm, but they have torque for days, and run smoothly on one cylinder if you got a bad coil or dead plug. I've been buying every one I can for years just so they don't get scrapped.
Needs the backwards treads flipped, looking at the tyre from the top, you have to have the V pointing forwards, otherwise all the schmoo just gets pushed into the middle of the tyre's grip and you lose all traction and just dig holes... :P
The backwards tires annoyed me the whole video!!!
Yep 4 of the 6 were backwards
I have the "big brother to your Max II, with a 20hp. I live the off-grid life up here in Alaska and use it to pull trees to my saw mill, and woodshed. It is a beast when it comes to pulling, a 1000lb tree, no problem at all. The T20 trans is the week point in my option, very fittingly to adjust. Great to see you all having a blast with it.
As someone who has used a 6x6 like this one more than once, the wiring, jankyness and everything checks out lol. That thing i swear was broken down more then it actually ran. We used it to get to a duck blind for hunting because the area was swampy and we had to use the 6x6 because one of the hunters was paraplegic so it was his only access. We did take it into a large brackish river and that was scary as hell lol
They're actually pretty good when they first came out. I think it was the late 60s mid-seventies. They were ahead of their time back then but with side by side. Nowadays, it's going to be hard to spend that much on a six by six but if you guys put a little more horsepower into it and different gearing, I think you can turn it into a mean machine
They should turn it into a mini ripsaw!
Can't Howie and Howie tec own the patents plus they have military contracts
They can totally do it. It would be nothing like the ripsaw.
Woo 6x6 with Kevin! Yeah man, Kansas City native here. Nobody talks about the weather out here... It's regularly 100 degrees during the summer here, only it's regularly also VERY humid and still. Being between the Rockies and Appalachia, kinda sucks sometimes.
I like it when you get together with Kevin...it makes for really good video. I've never had a 6 wheeler but wanted one at one time. They're slooooow....and that doesn't entertain me for too long.
I can't help but wonder if the directional looking tread on those tractor looking style tires would make a difference if turned around the other way like you normally see on tractors... Running them backwards seems like it would have a tendency to dig deeper in the ground and get stuck.
There is a certain direction they’re supposed to be, and they’re not to be all in the same direction.
Maybe the 6x6 would of been better if the tires were on the right direction.
At least the middle ones are gone the right way and run it with a lot less air pressure
@donbolles2701 I seen that too
Same thought
CarsandCameras x JunkyardDigs crossovers are the f^&cking BEST!
Thank you John, Ike, and Kevin. From the resurrection, to the adventures, and the laughter along the way. That was really enjoyable to watch.
This is instantly a favorite, AND Junkyard Digs! Way to get the people going!
Damn digs, you gotta save some cars for the rest of us. and man i wouldnt mind a shot of the cars and cameras collection.
In 1981 I had a Max 2 with a factory 440 motor. It would do 35 miles an hour on flat ground. In the water it was slow but it was a lot of fun just make sure you remember to put the two plugs in the back. I sold mine to a small engine repair shop in Des Moines
kevin is a bit toasted by the end lol
This look like farm is tires on the 6x6. You need flotation tires and they are normally directional. Enjoyed the video as always.
Nice to see kevin from junkyard digs love all you guys
All the tires need to be working and the same direction of traction I think your pressure is not that far off as long as the wheels are squatting they're giving a big tread foot print for the best traction.
And remember there's a reason they sold a outboard motor bracket if you want to play in the water haha.
Kevin to be a smart ass in the background is great!
John trying to mow down ike and Kevin was hilarious
I've never owned a 6X6 but wouldn't it be better if the tires all had the same rotation direction?
Thanks for the videos keep up the good work.
Three thumbs up from Denmark 🇩🇰👍👍
Only if you plan to go one direction in water. If you want to go forward in water, the tread has to be reversed. If you want to go reverse, the tread has to be forward. If you want to do both. Then, one or two sets have to be opposite. Depending how many sets are opposite counts towards how fast you go in that direction.

@@reaper666grimm
The way they rode today it seems like the tires should be mounted reversed .
For fishing and hunting they are mounted the right way now .
Thanks for the answer. 👍👍
@bendermi true but wrong type of tread for that type of terrain. Plain V tread is ok with mud but not water, soft sand, and gravel mix. They needed paddle tread tires. Either the straight across, V, or diagonal kind.
@reaper666grimm
I think they are sold with V tread tires because of the price and if the paddle tires are used wrong they will wear out too fast.
Kevin hasent got a lick of sense!good day playing!
I have an Argo 6x6 Bigfoot. Put them in the right situation they are virtually unstopable . Running in the river with a sandy bottom will probably get you stuck, especially if you start spinning. That goes for swamps also. Add a set of tracks...... and I have only used the Argo plastic tracks, you will go places quads and sxs can only wish too. I do also have a winch cause when you get them stuck in the swamp, they are really stuck. I also have the 18 Briggs in mine. Where I use mine, the guys on the quads can get pretty wet where I am always dry.
It's engine block and non running vehicle moving time.
John: I've got the camera, start moving everything boys!
Great job!
Total Overkill Studios here, I won't be the first person to vouch for 6x6s as the one I owned had a lot of limitations, but here are some tips.
1. Biggest tires you can fit. It looks like your running 18" tires. These machines came with 21" tall tires and can be fitted with up to a 25" tall tire if you use a heat gun and warp the plastic tub a little. One of the biggest issues of AATVs (amphibious ATVs) is their low ground clearance. So you need to maximize that as much as you can, not make it less. As high centering is how these machines get stuck.
2. Tire tread and direction only matters if your swimming. If the machine isn't floating it doesn't really matter to much. Forward V tread like a tractor digs better, and self cleans faster. Backwards V facing up is better in the water when your floating. But honestly it depends more on the style of the tread, and no matter which way you had them facing on this outing would have little effect.
3. Tire pressure. How many PSI are you running? You want 3PSI as a maximum, 2-1 is preferred. At 1.5 PSI these machines don't dig holes in soft mud and sand very easily and will get stuck much less.
4. Keep your momentum up, turning gets you stuck. Since you drag and dig the machine down when you turn with a skid steer. Pick your line and go straight without letting off. If you have to turn in soft stuff, your already losing the battle.
5. You got chains popping and running up on your sprockets, that needs to be fixed so you can get your power down when under load.
6. Tuck your tires in closer, their spaced out as if to be used with tracks. The further they are away from the tub, the more axle and tub to drag and get high centered.
Bonus: 6x6 / 8x8 are "ok" compared to a lot of newer SxS, but if you want them to beat everything, they need tracks. Tracked 6x6/8x8 are Sherp killers.
Lastly as a critique, I'm not going to argue that the 6x6 here wasn't impressing anyone. But there was a lot of shade being thrown it's way despite never once showing video evidence of any other machines actually conquering something the 6x6 struggled at. So make sure to film the success of the other machines as a comparative to make a video look less biased.
Neighbors had an amphicat 6x when i was a kid. That thing was a riot
You Guys are having a blast in your videos. This Old Man from Washington NC always enjoying them. Love You Guys 🛵🧔💝💝💝
Hell yea! 2 of my favorite channels combined! Always enjoy these videos!
Like my friends late father would say, "They're three wheelers, NOT DUCKS!"
RIP Steve.
Shake and bake .Ricky Bobby you still racin man .we need you back on the team Ricky Bobby 🎉
I am laughing so hard watching y'all. Thank you so much for the update and content.
You guys are just hilarious. I'm always jumping between Cars and Cameras and Kevin's Junk Yard Digs. Keep 'em coming - love the content.
You guys had more fun than I did today! Keep it up!
Kevin loves the old “unload and send er across the yard” trick
Remember the guy a couple years ago that offered his 6x6 Argo for free to Isaac on a live stream...except the catch was you had to come to western Canada to get it? Thats me.
Probably wouldn't get stuck if the tires weren't on backwards lol.
For the T-shirt, you should have put a sign on the side of the station wagon saying "Bonneville or bust!".
You have to get the treads/tracks for the Max2 and they go much better
Takes me back to Saturday mornings and "The Banana Splits."
Wiping the tears away. That looked like fun+... If you wanna see what 'HOT' is like, come to Australia in the summertime.
It's always good when you two and Kevin get together.
I swear, are you guys hiding the cold snacks? This is something that me and my buddies would do on a weekend.
Enjoyed you guys together. Need more content with all of you together
You guys need more of this guy, loved the video and the length of it also
Double bubble is king! Sure does bring back memories
Can’t wait untill we get the other project vids
Another awesome vid! Cant wait til October
Kevin is a great guy, I could hang out with him any day. The only thing better would've been his girlfriend, or fiance maybe, Mook coming along. She comes up with even funnier stuff! Looked like a great time, I'm glad you all got together, it's a shame you live so far apart, you could make videos even better than you do now, "Junkyard Cars & Cameras"" 🙂
Great vids guys keep it up. Been watching since the beginning!
Might not have been the 130mph down the salt flats weekend you hoped for but man that looks like great fun! New t-shirt in the offing?" I break stuff.. but not as much as Kevin!" ;) x
What a way to stay cool, hahahaha. Good to see you guys having fun.
your people are the most amazing people ever seen I hope you have a wonderful day
It's always funny when Ike says let's stop driving it before we break it then Ike breaks it as soon as he gets on it. Lol!!!!!
Love the 6x6. Had a blast as a kid with mine
Just like a tiny little tank. Lol. I love his 3 wheeler collection. We have some too. Never grow up. Entertain your inner child!
Those things are so much fun. Bunch of different ones made back in the day. My cousins picked one up called a Terra Tiger, with the motor in front. Thought it was the coolest thing ever. Took half the day to get it going. Tires flat, dirty carb, recoil broke...you name it. Finally get it going and the first big bump we hit, the spark plug wire comes off and lands on my leg. He thought it was hilarious! Fixed that and we proceeded to drive it through everything possible. It was dark when we finally returned. Man, were we in trouble. Not sure what was more covered in mud. Us, or the ATV! We still laugh about it 40 years later. Thanks for the memories. Lol.
That was a lot of fun, continue sirs.
This is a welcome surprise it's like a feature-length movie
You guys are awesome keep up the awesome work
Ike , your crazy and your an animal 4 wheeling genius.
So cool you guys let John play "mechanic" with the boys!
Lol. I'm from Iowa (originally), and you're right, the Midwest gets stoopid hot (+humid) in the summer. But wait until you experience the equally excessive stoopid COLD in the winter! 😅
Why do you think I live in Arizona now? And no, our summers aren't what everyone imagines, at least not down... up... here in Sierra Vista, almost a mile above sea level. That, plus nothing ever rusts here, it's a gear-heads paradise!
The tires are directional the front and rear axle need to be swap from side-to-side on both of them sets
Just started the video cant wait to watch two of my favorite channels together!
Just get well soon we all love the content
I used to really want one of them but after seeing the lack of power they have I don’t. But I would love to see one with an engine swap and you guys are just the ones to do it! 😂
I doubt it's a question of power. When it sinks a few inches into the sand the flat bottom creates massive drag. More power would just make for rooster tails with no forward movement. This thing is meant for dry land or floating in deep water.
@@Ijusthopeitsquick I wasn’t referring to it getting stuck. I hadn’t actually even started watching the video yet. Just in general they are underpowered for my liking. The ground clearance is the main problem and why I would also like to see larger tires on them.
@@shk2564not meant to be quickest down the strip, they are meant to have massive torque and pulling capability. This one definitely needs new tires, these ones were worn down pretty good.
@@shk2564after filming we realize the thing does like 20 mph. She's got some balls
Put a set of tracks on it and it'll beat everything. Mine was a 8x8 Argo, I never needed the tracks.
Man yall always find a way to have fun and work on goodies love the videos keep up the good work wish i could do stuff like yall
I'm picturing a shirt with John on the 6x6, laughing like a madman whilst chasing Ike.
Love these machines when I was a kid reminds me of a show called the banana splits. The pins you replace with bolts are called shear pins like on the prop of small outboard boat motors they are designed to shear off to keep catastrophic breaking to the transmission under extreme pressure. I would look into replacing them with oem replacements. That up to you just saying something to look into.
The colab we needed for sure
That sprint car kart use to be mine. I have original engine brackets and CR250 engine that was on it if you are interested.
KEVIN: "Hold my Beer."
JOHN: "Am I a joke to you?"
On the cutting edge of cocking up, stay true my brothers of mayhem!!!!!
29:08 there are pins that the roll bars line up with and attached to with cotter pins. This video has me out working on my Max II 6x6, trying to get it up and running again.
the cool thing with the 6x6 is you can get a track mod for it and it turns into a tiny bobcat LOL
29:30 I love the send off! 😂
To bad Bonneville fell through but that will give you a year to get woodgrain along the side of the wagon and matching woodgrain on the bike!!! Whoa, how cool!!
I love watching you guys, you make it very Entertaining
That opposed twin is best sounding engine. I love it.
Just needs 999cc Engine or a tuned 670cc great fun watching you guys either way 👍
Great stuff guys thanks
Isaac, John and Charles can imitate The Banana Splits now!
This was a fun one. Do it again!
We had one of these out back, and it was always my dream to get it up and running again so seeing this was awesome
The BRIGGS OPPY! Fergen bulletproof!
Great vid Guys!! Thanks. See you next Wednesday. 👊✌️❤️🤙
