Sir Elton Hercules John CH CBE (born Reginald Kenneth Dwight; 25 March 1947)[ is a British singer, pianist and composer. Acclaimed by critics and musicians, particularly for his work during the 1970s and for his lasting impact on the music industry, his music and showmanship have had a significant impact on popular music. His songwriting partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin is one of the most successful in history
“Philadelphia Freedom" is a song by English musician Elton John and songwriter Bernie Taupin. It was released as a single in 1975, credited to The Elton John Band. For several years during the 70's there was nothing bigger than Elton John.
Quite a few, actually.
@@douglemay7989 1970 - 1976 were his biggest years in the 1970s. Crocodile Rock was the first #1 hit in the United States that I took notice of back then. Then he got really big.
Grew up in the 70s listening to Elton constantly. One of the most talented singer/songwriters ever! My daughter recently saw one of his farewell concerts, here in Australia, as she was working for the ticketing/seat-ushering company and allowed to stay after she'd finished her shift to see it. She said it was a FANTASTIC concert and he was just as good to listen to as ever. :)
A tribute to Billie Jean King.
I'll never forget seeing him in concert and it was EPIC! I was in my early 20s and nothing since has topped it. ❤ Sir Elton John
This is still such a fun song...kinda like puppy love wishes. Yes for Billie Jean...a few years after she beat Bobby Riggs. Check that one out if you're not a senior. She was the queen of tennis for years...deserves the tributes. Sing it out, Elton John!
I love the way he sang "Little Jeannie" in this concert in Central Park. He actually got contact lenses later on. He has gone back to wearing glasses all the time now.
I always enjoy Elton reviews. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend his (for now, at least) last ever tour concert in Stockholm back in July, and it was fantastic. His voice is as solid as it ever was, energy levels were great, and apart from a five-minute instrumental interlude in the middle it was full tilt for two and a half, maybe three hours.
Expensive, but so glad I went.
What a song and voice!
I was right in the middle of the audience at this concert. 16 years old. Beautiful blue sky, 80 degrees, no humidity, perfect weather. The sound was crystal clear, and it sounded like it was coming from all directions. Absolutely Wonderful. One of my best memories as a teenager. The best version, however, is the one he did live on "Soul Train" but the video quality is not the best. It was very Soulful Indeed.
Warm day in NYC yet he looks pretty cool in the performance. He's not sweating much at all in this concert that I can see.
This song takes me straight back, still in single digits to the pool with my dad and begging quarter's for the jukebox. ❤
This 1980 concert was one of the best concerts ever by anyone. Elton John at his peak (with his falsetto) with the best sound system and his best band. Watch the whole three hour concert.
Back in the day Elton was my favorite artist. I was in the US Navy in 1983 and some of my shipmates and I got to see him (with Quarterflash) at the Greek Theater at UC Berzerkley.
Only $20 each
"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album was his masterpiece.
Recommended Elton John rock song, "Saturday night's alright for fighting".
He was an incredible entertainer, always a great song from Elton John. Great reaction
Captain Fantastic...Sir Elton John
In the late 70's this song was playing 'round the clock on most FM stations !
Ahhh, FM stations, all of you youngsters today have no idea what you are missing...
FM radio back in the day was our musical education & it was wonderful !
Lots of great music all back to back instead of just on type or one artist it opened us up and we gladly drank it in oh those were the days my friend ( I thought they'd never end 😉) so don't be stuck on one style of music or one artist take it all in and trust me you will find songs that will blow you away ✌️🙂
......and the 1970's is the place to start ❤
Nigel Olsson on drums.. Played on the Farewell tour. Original band member Dee Murray on Bass. Guitarist Davey Johnstone was not available. Richie Zito and Tim Renwick (Al Stewart) on guitar. Keyboardist James Newton Howard became one of Hollywood's greatest and most prolific composers of movie scores. Great performances!
James Newton Howard gave an interview of how he was barely making a living touring with Melissa Manchester and he had put out an album that was not selling when he got a call from his manager asking him if he wanted to audition to go on tour with Elton John. He went to the audition and got hired. He told the story about what happened in his audition with Elton John and it's on youtube, fascinating story: ruclips.net/video/N3goGcCxl5Y/видео.htmlsi=aO2vcdb6-91nsuXC
A great song . First saw him at the Playhouse (or was it the Usher Hall?) can't remember now, Edinburgh around 1985... Feeling old..😀
Yep! That is charisma.
You must be ten feet tall and bulletproof to do the job.
The concert was free, paid for by New York City. It was not for the Philadelphia Freedoms.
There was an estimated crowd of 400,000+.
500,000
Elton siempre tan emotivo en sus canciones y conciertos bien Beth 👏👏🍀🍀💙💜
I was at this concert with my younger brother. One of the best concerts I’ve seen and, so far, it’s the only time I’ve seen Elton John. He’s on the ‘fairwell’ tour so that’s still a couple of more years, right? 😂😂
Pay attention here to the amazing bass playing by the late Dee Murray. It was nice to see Dee and original drummer Nigel Olsson back with Elton.

Done and done. Let me know when the album comes out.
Absolutely beautiful vocal and emotive delivery
One of the all time best performers! Enjoy your videos and analysis Beth. I recall Elton having major vocal issues in the mid ‘80’s (surgery I believe) but came back with a richer and stronger voice imo. I always wonder what he changed about his technique and who coached him through his recovery…
One of these times, when you go back to Elton John, it might be interesting to choose a song where the original band (Nigel Olsson and Dee Murray here, plus Davey Johnstone) were singing their backing vocals. Their harmonies were angelic.
Lifelong Elton John fan. As a preteen boy,, I would record his songs off a small transistor radio using a small portable cassette recorder and play them to death. 😂
Mb14 la cup is the greatst vocal pefoamnce ever and i would give anything to see your reaction to the first and 4th song.. it is amazing.
Phenomenal Song!!!!!
love your vids !
MB 14 la cup showcase is amazing and your reaction to it would be so great!
I’ve become phobic of the thousands of times music gets paused in these reactions. They are tortuous jolts. Why do I do it to myself?
Lyrics to Jimmy Buffett's 1973 song: Death of an Unpopular Poet:
(This somber, sad, even reverent song seem apropos)
I once knew a poet, Who lived before his time
He and his dog Spooner, Would listen while he'd rhyme
Words to make you happy, Words to make you cry
Then one day the poet suddenly did die
But he left behind a closet, Filled with verse and rhyme
And through some strange transaction, One was printed in the Times
And everybody's searchin', For the king of undergound
Well they found him down in Florida, With a tombstone for a crown
Everybody knows a line, From his book that cost four ninety-nine
I wonder if he knows he's doin', Quite this fine
'Cause his books are all best sellers, And his poems were turned to song
Had his brother on a talk show, Though they never got along
And now he's called immortal, Yes he's even taught in school
They say he used his talents, A most proficient tool
But he left all of his royalties, To Spooner his ol' hound
Growin' old on steak and bacon, In a doghouse ten feet 'round
And everybody wonders, Did he really lose his mind
No he was just a poet , who lived before his time
He was just a poet, who lived before his time
This song beautifully illustrates the mastery of Jimmy's story telling through song. It would be a great tribute to him if a song reaction on this one was posted. The song isn't autobiographical though he did mention when he wrote it, he factored in his then recent experience of being turned down in the music business so many times before he made it and he does love his dogs. While Jimmy had fanatical fans (known as parrotheads) for those who knew him, he was unpopular with so many people into mainstream music because he only had 1 Top 10 hit. There are few artists with 10+ or 20+ truly great songs in their discography. Though only 1 hit the Top 10, this man has literally written and recorded 100+ songs that are reaction-worthy. Death of an Unpopular Poet is one example of an obscure and awesome song that only a real Jimmy Buffett fan would even be aware exists. Loved that guy. Fins up. You will be greatly missed Jimmy! RIP brother.
Marc Hudson of DragonForce released a solo record and it's amazing. Several videos already out. The Siren or Starbound Stories ( the title track) are worth a reaction.
I think she should check out Manchester orchestra his music is just so melancholy
Woudl love to see you react to a few of my favourite (live) videos!
Would love to hear you react to anything from Nathaniel Rateliff (but a live version of love don't or S.O.B. would be amazing)
Vulf Peck Back Pocket live in Madison Square Garden
Dwight Yoakam Liar Live at Guitar Centre
Been going through a few of your videos today and can't get enough!
Ok, I finally have a question 😉 I've heard comments about singers vowels being sung differently (Elton John, Geddy Lee). It's my understanding that singers don't necessarily sound the same with their singing voice as when they talk, as in accents. However, is it possible that some singers' accents (aforementioned, British, and Canadian respectively) affect how they sing their vowels? Would love to hear your thoughts 🥰
1:50 well, the confidence may have been cocainically enhanced
Another excellent video! I recommend you listen "La espera - Cultura Profética" .Willy Rodriguez has a beautifil voice.
2:05 Elton changed the lyrics to "knee high to a man" well that certainly clarifies the original lyrics "knee high to romance" which also clearly was a reference to oral sex specifically in the parlance and popular nomenclature of our times "a blowjob" ❤
Hey Beth! Love your channel, but I don’t know where the info you shared about this concert came from??? But it is NOT a tribute concert to the Philadelphia Freedoms. This was a free concert held in Central Park. Both my sisters went to the concert. Elton John was huge at the time. The song “Philadelphia Freedom” was written as a tribute to Billie Jean King. She was a very famous tennis player at the time. Loved both your analysis and enjoyment of Elton’s performance❤❤❤
Like Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury, Elton John has been a great performer. It is odd seeing him without the shades but you can always recognize that voice.
Camo looks good on you Beth!
There is only one Sir Elton John.
Please listen to new song by Diana Ankudinova the day you... Or California dreaming, sweet dreams, fly away on the wings of the wind(Borodin's Prince Igor) from mask show
THE TENNIS PLAYER WAS BILLIE JEAN KING.
Oliver Anthony..Rich man North of Richmond, I gotta get sober, or I wanna go home..please check It out
It seems odd to see him with no glasses
You're wearing a Belgian Army camo top. Interesting. No judgement, just interesting 👍!
It's British DPM, S95 judging by the colours. The Netherlands also adopted it, so I wouldn't be surprised it Belgium had also used it.
Marvelously comfortable shirt, that. 😀
Почему я родился так поздно(((
Not really a concert for the soccer team. Elton had the idea to play there; no major rock acts had been allowed to perform in several years because the concert area had been trashed and chaos ensued last time. This time the crowd was full of nothing but good vibes and people stayed behind and picked up litter and there were no incidents. Estimates of crowd size somewhere between 250,000 and 500,000 people, with the Daily News giving 400,000 as the figure. Biggest crowd ever to play there up until that time.
It looked like "Woodstock" only with good weather !!!!
250 THOUSAND pairs of glasses? Did you read that right? I have so many questions. What will he do with the thousands of pairs he can't wear in this lifetime (or the next)? A great pop singer no question, who shot straight to the top and stayed there for generations, deservedly so, though his faux-American vocal posturing always grated on me, and I don't care for this song much. Imo he's never bettered that first self-titled album, with more introspective material. Each to their own.
My mind immediately went to how much that must've cost. At even $10 a pair that would be $2.5 million. Imagine what that money could have done for causes other than Elton John's unused sunglasses.
it's Elton John
