The United States half cent was a coin denomination that was minted by the U.S. Mint from 1793 to 1857. It was one of the early denominations issued by the Mint and holds historical significance. Due to their small denomination and limited use in commerce, half cents are relatively scarce, making them intriguing for collectors. Collectors often consider factors such as the coin's condition, rarity, and historical significance when evaluating and acquiring U.S. half cents.
Early issues of the half cent (1793-1836) were made of 100% copper. However, due to rising copper prices and the need to reduce production costs, the composition changed in 1837 to a mixture of copper and nickel (or pure copper in some cases). These later issues are often referred to as the "Braided Hair" half cents.
The U.S. Mint stopped producing half cents after 1857 due to several factors, including the low face value and the cost of production. By that time, the coin had become increasingly unpopular in everyday commerce but are highly collectible, with many collectors appreciating their historical significance and rarity. Certain dates and varieties are particularly sought after by numismatists.

Like any collection it’s fun when you get started and sometime you get lucky over acquiring a coveted piece or two. But as you collection increases the pieces you desire to complete your collection become cost prohibitive unless you have very deep pockets….
