Absolutely glad I've found this video! I feel like I've been missing some key features of Stages, and it feels like maybe this firmware will help me a great deal in accomplishing more with this module!
I've always wanted a second Stages because I feel like I just haven't connected with it yet, and I've not understood why. Maybe I just need to really get into the weeds of this module some more! xD

This was awesome and think I now need stages in my life. Digital is not a dirty word where mutable is concerned.

Just a heads up, I’ve done many firmware updates directly in through my older iPhone’s headphone jack. Works every time .
Joe Seggiola did some great work to make this update happen too.
Stages in my opinion is a near perfect design. Sample and hold, oscillators, sequencing, random cv, adsr++, pseudo delay, lfos, slew, and a harmonic oscillator.

Thanks for sharing! I had Joe Seggiola in my notes but forgot to mention him. I'll update the description. I almost bricked my Clouds and Warps a year ago while installing Parasite, took me many, many retries and at some point I thought I wasted the modules. I tried so many devices (iPad, Smartphone, Surface Pro, PC) and in the end it worked when I used a preamp and a Samsung phone. For me, using BitBox works very simple and reliable and I sincerely hope people will have the same update experience as you do with the old iPhone.

I held off on this firmware update due to paranoia😳 But recently took the plunge. All I can say is that I’m more than glad that I did. Turned an excellent module into a great one. Individual vids could made on each mode. This is a good taste of the qiemem firmware.

Very nice explanation and demo of the alternative firmware, thank you. I just ordered Stages, and can’t wait to play around with it. Maybe I’ll try this firmware when I got the basics in place.

Installing firmware can be tough. I hope it suits your needs in the factory version. If you go the 'firmware' route, just make sure you have an incoming signal that stays between three or four leds. It will not work if the incoming volume is too low.

@@CinematicLaboratory Thanks for the tip, I've got more than enough so far with the factory firmware, but MI will release a new official FW soon, so I guess I'll update sooner or later anyway :)

This is a very nice module. I got an almost new one for a bargain and do not regret it at all!
The is one major drawback... It can do so much, I would like to have more (and more)!

Nice work. Going in DivKid territory with explaining :). Stages is also a nice dirty lofi mixer when you run audio through it. Fun to shape the output with the new Blades module....(hint :)

Nah, I only know 0.1% of what DivKid knows, he's one of a kind. But thanks!

Firmware only applies to the hardware Stages, ya? Could this update be applied to the VCVrack/mirack version?

like always, a great demonstration :) whew i had no idea about the
new os - makes it a much more tempting proposition now.
a question: so the standard mutable easter egg harmonic osc
requires that connection on the back of the pcb,
does using Qiemem FW also require this, to use its modes 5 and 6 ?
and consequently, do i need to disconnect it again to use modes 1 - 4,
or can we just keep it connected at all times for all Qiemem modes ?
    little confusing,.. thanks

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  3 года назад +1

This firmware opens up the easter egg without making the connection on the PCB so it makes life much easier :). Just select mode 5 or 6 and you're good to go.

I can understand that! I made this video so I can watch it as a quick manual because I also forgot how it works by now.

Very cool. I'll try it out soon. I barely know how to use the module as it is now, so I'll wait a few weeks. I totally understand there being a bit of a learning curve to some of the digital modules with all of the modes and light codes, but you mentioned X-pan. It may be my brain injury, or my X-pan may be broken, but for the life of me, I can't Gert the thing to work in stereo. I wonder if someone at the shop forgot a jumper osr something. My X-pan is deeply monophonic :)

Sorry for the late response! Very weird story about your XPAN. Is it sorted out?

@@CinematicLaboratory Yes! I thought for sure it was my first ever euro power issue. Turns out it's more likely that it was a strange neurological symptom from having COVID19 in the beginning of the pandemic.
Everyone has heard about people losing the sense of smell and taste with covid. When I got my first vaccine (which made me sick but was worth it) I got very bad brain fog. The vaccine nurse told me she had met a man who was complaining after his first dose, that his regularly tuned and well maintained piano sounded out of tune, but only in the morning and before bed, and only in the higher registers. His symptoms went away after his second vaccine. She told me of another person who had a sort of color blindness that didn't follow the usual rules of color blindness.
I suspect, even if it does sound crazy, that I was having covid related transient auditory problems. I hadn't fully put it together, but there were other indicators. Post vaccine dose two, things have cleared up and I'm back to "normal" Now I can consistently hear in stereo. Good. I have so many albums to mix, master and release. This has been a productive time for me.
Thanks for asking, and thanks again for your videos. I lose words and concepts. Watching your videos sometimes helps me recall entire synth concepts that have been obscured by my TBI. Incredibly helpful. You may think you are helping mostly beginners and the curious with your videos, but there are people like me, who know what they are doing, but need reminders. You are providing a valuable service, and I appreciate it more than you can know.

@@MisterNiles OMG I never heard anything about side effects like this but you don't need to be a scientist to figure out that gen therarpy will have side effects nobody could ever predict. Good to hear the side effects are gone, and thank you so much for sharing. I am scheduled for my vaccine this month, hope everything will turn out well.

hi there' i am desperatly trying to install the firmware with no success can you please let me know the steps nedeed as clear as you can?
a had ro reinstall to the original with a friends help
but still even he cant make it work :\

As you can see on the video, the incoming wave file should show four leds (three green, one orange) for optimal sound level. I got errors when the incoming signal was too low and too high will have errors too. It's important to have a playback device that's not interrupted by system sounds like notifications. I used BitBox, which made loading the firmware a breeze, but I still remember having huge issues with installing Warps & Clouds firmware with my laptop/ipad. There was a moment where I thought I bricked them. In the end I got it working by using a Samsung smartphone, but it was hard to find a good sweetspot for the volume. I had to try many times. But this will give you the best chance if you don't have anybody with a BitBox nearby. I really hope this helps! Keep me posted.
