It is nice artistically, but as Vitruvius wrote - everything should have three basic qualities: "Firmitas, Utilitas, Venustas" ... The handle is too heavy. When the handle is stronger than the diameter of the ax eye, then the handle breaks just below the eye of the ax. The same applies to the orientation of the wood fibers - the wood cracks along the fibers, so it is necessary for the curved handles that the fibers are oriented coaxially with the cutting edge of the ax, not perpendicular to it.

What the point of cutting up the bit of the axe and welding it?

The ax had a very large shaft gap. It looked bad. It was also too big for me to fit the handle I wanted. so I had to shape it a bit.
