    Malta was for a long time the most coveted island by Mediterranean civilizations. Its strategic location and its small size made it a perfect enclave for trade and warfare. Thus, the continuous passage of peoples led to the roots of the island being shaped by different cultures.
    At less than one square kilometer, Valletta is the smallest European capital. In addition, it was the first to be planned with its grid streets and its piped water supply system. Although the first stone was laid in 1566, it was not until 1571 that the first settlers began to settle.
