- With my wife Dace we continue traveling through Eastern Europe to share it with you and we arrived in Albania, a surprising Balkan country with coasts, mountains and an intense urban life.
Finding similarities between Albania and Latin America is something that may at first seem capricious. But after wandering these streets for a few days we have come to believe that it is not. Then, the verification of some data will prove us right.
Albania and Latin America, despite being separated by thousands of kilometers, share some surprising similarities. Temperate to warm climate, accumulation of garbage in streets and empty spaces, some disorder and some transportation problems are more similar to Latin America than to its neighbors in Europe.
But it is not only that, we tend to relate countries by ethnic and religious roots when today, with globalization, there are other parameters that make them similar. We will see some economic, social and even cultural characteristics that make us more related than we could imagine. It already happened to us in Romania, now we feel it in Albania.
Both regions, both this sector of the Balkans and the countries on the other side of the Atlantic, have been influenced by the same European culture, especially by Spain and Italy in the case of Latin America, and Italy and Greece in the case of Albania.
For their part, both Albania and Latin America have a rich history of indigenous peoples who have resisted assimilation and maintain their own traditions and cultures.
Family and friends are very important in both cultures, with strong ties between parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren. Furthermore, both Albanians and Latin Americans are known for their hospitality and warm treatment among people.
Both Albania and most Latin American countries are developing countries with emerging economies and problems of backwardness in technologies and infrastructure. Furthermore, tourism is an important sector in both regions, with great natural beauty and relevant historical sites.
Love, music and dance are important cultural expressions in both regions. The attentive ear will find similarities between local music and manifestations of the rich Latin American musical panorama.
For its part, economic and social inequality is an important challenge in both regions that can be seen with the naked eye, just by walking through their streets. Corruption is another problem that affects both. In any case, both regions have great potential for economic growth.
The bustling Albanian nights, full of lights and people walking through the streets also remind us of some places in Latin America. Eat with the table outside, have a beer or coffee without any roof over you, see what is happening around us.
There is surely the possibility of greater cooperation between Albania and Latin America in areas such as trade, investment and tourism, as they share a number of similarities that go beyond geography. These similarities can serve as a basis for greater cooperation and understanding between both regions.
But of course not everything is similar. Regarding the important differences between Albania and Latin America, there is the language, since the official language of Albania is Albanian, while in Latin America a wide variety of languages are spoken, including Spanish, Portuguese, French and English, very distant from what is spoken. here.
Another difference is size: Albania is a small country with a population of approximately 3 million people, while Latin America is a vast region with a population of more than 600 million people.
An important point is Religion. The majority of the Albanian population is Muslim, while the majority of the Latin American population is Christian.
Despite these differences, the similarities between Albania and Latin America are significant, they have surprised us since our arrival and can be a bridge for building stronger relationships, but at least for us there is something that is already important, we feel like in home.

Hey Gustavo! I'm Albanian and I congratulate you for this nice piece of journalism. We have noticed our similarities with Latin America, even though we are way apart. We look fondly of Latins and they are some of the best people of the world. I live in North America and the people I get along are those of Spanish dissent especially Colombians. We seem to have the same level of economic development, same social mentality and way of living. We have a lot of Albanians in Ecuador, Colombia doing that hard nose stuff.🤣. We want Latins of Americas to know that we Albanians like them very much, like their music, dance, football, food, colorful cities and costumes and as I said some of us like that white stuff comes from there😇. I cant wait to have some money saved and visit all of them especially Colombia, Peru, Ecuador. Long live Latinos.!

once Turks told me that Albanians are Turks but to my surprise when I was in Kosovo to cover the independence day for TV and in my conversations with local people they told me they are completely different and indeed it is a different culture...a typical Balkani culture that as a Tunisian am very familiar with since my wife is a Bulgarian . Balkan women are the most beautiful on earth and the most stubborn but I like that combination

Albanians have learnt that they have similarities with Latin America through their telenovelas. They were a big hit, especially 20 years ago . All of us have learnt Spanish through Mexican telenovelas mostly. I started with Argentinians ones first ( Celeste, Perla Negra, etc), then with the Brasilian ones ( Clone) to end up with Mexican ones ( El Privilegio de Amar, Mirada de Mujer, Soy tu Duena, Amores Verdaderos ) etc.
Albanians learn Spanish easily as we all know the Italian language, and from it is just a step further to Spanish and to Portuguese. I have learnt Brasilian language too( Portuguese) through these telenovelas. The warmness of the people, friendly neighbourhoods, big family relationships, dances are things that Albanians find it very similar to Latin America( not to mention the mess and loss of order and rules that Western Europe loves it so much and the Albanians hate it).
Of course, we are not the same, Albania has a very strong culture, and we follow more a traditional life with more strict morals than Latin America, and that has nothing to do with religion. Albania was way stricter during communism when the religion didn't exist at all....

@GustavoLlusa 👍. Albanians love bending rules, but somehow bending the rules it makes them look more human. Humanity is lost in Western Europe with so many rules put in place that it feels like you are turning into a robot....
Just a little example. A Finnish couple in Albania a year ago mentioned that from the heat, the woman felt like fainted in the street, people called the ambulance, the ambulance came, they checked her, she was fine so she didn't want to go to hospital, so the ambulance sent her at the Airbnb where she was staying and the owner made her a fresh drink out of pomegranates. The couple said that if something like that would happen in Finland, then it could have been a lot of paperwork in place, and no ambulance would have sent her at her home stay. In Albania, people understand, and nobody would criticise the ambulance driver and the staff. It is considered completely normal.....

Albanija mi se kao zemlja inače veoma sviđa. I sviđa mi se vidjeti zajedništvo Albanaca kao naroda. Njima je albanski identitet veoma važan i drži ih ujedinjene, bez obzira bili muslimani, pravoslavni ili rimokatolici. Svi su pravi patrioti, što pozdravljam.

Lo bueno de esa parte de Europa y Latino América es la sociabilidad, la importancia de la familia y de vivir en comunidad real. Around 250,000 Albanians left for Italy after Scanderbeg died in the 15th century. A lot of those Albanians went to Latin America together with Italians. Additionally 2 uncles of my grandfather went to Argentina around 1900. Albania and Latin America have some connection. I once meet a Brazilian men who had Italian ancestors and later on he found out they were actually Arbëreshë (the Albanians I mentioned in the beginning of my text)

Pueblos sufridos ! con gran potencial de crecimiento, la corrupción es inherente al ser humano ninguna sociedad escapa, la verdad es que al menos nosotros tenemos representación diplomática en muchos países solo que los embajadores hacen la plancha, sean del color político que sean, obviamente hay excepciones, entonces el intercambio económico y cultural quedan relegados por ese motivo , nada que no se pueda revertir desde ya. Esa expresión de "pueblos indígenas" es herencia de la visión errónea eurocéntrica y su creencia que llegaron a las indias cuando se encontraron con América. Es más propio llamar a esas poblaciones como "pueblos ancestrales" o "pueblos originarios".
