- First-timer Solo Install alert -- If you're looking for an Expert Install video this is not it. This is more of a Slow TV "I like anything with 4 wheels and tools in it" video. I recently purchased the Freedom Off Road lift kit for "Alfred," my 4th Gen 4Runner, and this video is more of a "let's learn together" as I work through installing the new rear coil springs and shocks. So brew a fresh cup of coffee and settle back for about 30 minutes of wrenches and puzzle-solving.

For me shooting video always triples the time good work chris
Nice work overcoming and adapting to the challenges
Bottle jack trick is very common on all generations of 4runners on the bumpstop for axle articulation for spring install
I just installed those replacing Xreas and it rides so good now
nice first hand look ,nothing like hands on! good work Mr. C
Thanks Tim!
Thanks Chris, great to meet ya.
You're welcome! Best to ya.
The little bracket is needed it aligns the shock at the right angle its an alignment cam washer @9:40 most aftermarket lift setups for the rear shocks come with the alignment washer that's upgraded
Ok. That good to know. The FOR shock did not come with one of those.
I have been thinking about doing this myself. I think that after watching you, I feel more confident that I can tackle this task!. Thanks for this video! Also after removing everything, it seems to be a good moment to clean the frame and give it a couple of antirust coating.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching. And you can definitely do it.
The axle didn't fall much because it still has the panhard bar and the upper and lower tubular Control arms holding it
If I ever do another lift install I would definitely disconnect the panhard. I was a little timid about doing unsure how hard it would be to get back together, but in the end it didn't save me any time. Thanks for all your insights.
Nice job I just bought a 2004 limited and these videos are definitely helping me out
Thanks! Good luck and have fun with the upgrades!
I finally did a walk around video of my 4 runner I've been building over the last couple of years got it just before covid happened
Man this is a great video. This install is just like the one I did on my 2nd gen w/out XREAS. 🔥
Appreciate the feedback!
This was definitely some help! Just ordered my rear lift for my 05 4Runner, already have the front coil overs from freedom, but this video will for sure help with the install, the bottle jack on the axle was a genius move
Thanks Gavin! Watch your fingers if you do the bottle jack axle maneuver. It's a bit wonky, but it works! 🤞🏻🔧
thanks for the great video buddy! I will probably try and do this with my new 04 4runner with a v6, and coffee roasting is cool too.
You're welcome. Just take your time and you'll get it. And congrats on the new 4th gen.
@@LiftKitCoffee cool, I ordered a bag o Joe too
@@troggmoffie Bonus points for that! Coffee is on its way. Thank you!
Easiest way would of been a heavy duty spring compressor for 56 bucks to compress the spring to make it smaller for install
Great video. I'm about to do the installation. Thank you.
You're welcome, and good luck!
Should really check out the old man emu I did the extreme overload on the rear and it's a 2" high travel lift
Love your videos, keep em coming!
Thanks for the encouragement!
This is awesome glad you are doing this and I found your channel. I have a 2004 4runner limited and I have been researching freedom offroad can't wait for the next video!!
Thanks Joshua. The next video is uploaded and should be live shortly. I think it is a solid system for the price.
Very nice! Does it drive ok with only the back lifts on? Probably feels weird - like you’re constantly driving down hill. Reminds me of the Wacky Races cartoons. :-)
I drove it for about a week with the rear lift only, even went out on some forest roads with it, and it wasn't that awkward. The hood is so big and boxy that from the driver's seat you didn't notice the downhill. Thanks for the comment!
How well did the front go for ya
Are you going to make a video on the front coilovers installed?
I am uploading an install summary video of the front coilovers and upper controls later today. I apologize if you were hoping for a step-by-step. The complexity of doing the work for the first time and shooting it step-by-step just became too much for me. The first 8 minutes are my comments and tips on the install. The last 8 minutes are on adjusting the coilovers, finishing up with some footage of the fully lifted 4Runner. I hope you find it useful, and if you have any specific questions please ask them.
@@LiftKitCoffee No worries! That sounds exactly like what I wanted to watch. I'm pretty familiar with installing lifts. I was mainly curious to see how they looked, how they adjust, and pretty much your overall review on them. I've been looking to replace my worn out stock shocks and freedom offroad was one of my choices but couldn't find any videos on a 4runner until now. Thanks!
What happened to the xreas linkage?
I pulled the entire system out in this video: ruclips.net/video/hLACgbU_Jzk/видео.html
would it have been easier if you took the sway bar endlinks off?
Hi Rishi. Yes, it would've been. In fact, I should've just replaced them while I was in there. The end links were worn out.
Stock front still?
How much weight are they supposed to upgrade to nowhere i have found to tell u how much is the upgraded hauling extra weight ?
Hi Texas, I'm no expert but my guess for the reason you're not finding this info is that the new springs alone does not increase the towing capacity. There's also the transmission specs for towing, etc. that figure in and Freedom is not suggesting any new capacity for that.
Anyone slap these springs. On. With. The oem. Tacoma struts? (Yellow/blue shocks
Ya gotta fix my brakes dude
Remember when I did your brakes on the mustard Volvo?
@@LiftKitCoffee took a few weeks
@@Royzoner Yup.
How would you review the springs now did they handle well and give a smooth ride and are they durable
The Freedom adjustable coilovers are a nice entry level option. They are well-made, sturdy components. I’ve had them on and off road and for the price I am quite pleased. As to whether they provide a smooth ride I would qualify it and say, yes, smooth for a 3 ton 20-year old truck on 33” E-rated off-road tires. Hope that helps.
What springs did you go with?
Leo, I used the 2" springs instead of the 3" to reduce the rake (with ~3" of lift in front).
@@LiftKitCoffee did you go with OME? I just removed all X-REAS system and replaced shocks & struts. All I have left is to remove my air suspension, install the coil conversion and replace with springs, just looking at what OME springs to go with.
@@majorkushhazard11 Everything for my lift came from Freedom Off Road.
