Nah, this is a brutally honest and ultimately accurate review of the bike and who it is aimed at. As Chris rightly points out, it's designed for race teams who will junk so much of bike in favour of Race spec kit. Clearly it's a fantastic bike, but so is a standard S1000rr.

If you are good enough you can use an S1000RR Superstock (no engine mods, treaded tyres) and put in a 134mph average lap at the Isle of Man TT. Indeed Peter Hickman raced his Superstock in the Superbike category on slicks and still won with a 135mph average lap.

Agreed! I would like someone like Dave Moss (or equivalent) to set the stock suspension up for the person that's testing the Bike to see how it handles when it's appropriately setup for the rider and his weight. I'm 212lbs and I've jumped on my buddies bike that's setup for him at 155lbs and even though both are 2020 BMWS1000RRM it was mind blowing how different our setups were to each other. Even with our DDC we had to get our bikes suspension baseline set for our individual weight and riding style. I'm looking forward to seeing how different the new geometry on the Gillies tripple clamp and the new longer swingarm (silver one) feels compared to my 2020 S1000RR M.

It's also not rocket science no bike will handle the same for a rider unless they are very similar build and weight. They will tide it different anyways. Spend half an hour watching Dave Moss and get a mate with a tape measure. You will be amazed how good your bike is. That's if your weight is within the fitted springs rate!

Chris I love this channel, it’s my go to… watched this and still traded my S for the M.. Having ridden them back to back on street and track. I can give you my opinion also. The S is an incredible bike, smooth, controlled and rapid. Both bikes in stock trim feel very similar, the M turns in a bit better. However, once you get them flashed and a full pipe, they are different. The M is more edgy, and gets power the power to the ground in a different way. I’m not saying it’s better but just different. It’s a shame you had not great weather and no slicks and the suspension was at the stock settings (I think), not the way to ride that bike. So yes, you need to do things to the M, but you also need to do things to the S. I commute on mine and track it, I love it. I’ve owned a lot of 1k bikes, and I’m really enjoying this one. And YES it does look good. Both amazing bikes. If you’re looking to save some money and still want an incredible bike the S is just awesome. If you want to feel something with a bit more life get the M (if you can afford it, it’s expensive but then again YOLO haha).

I feel like BMW should’ve just kept the HP4 moniker for this bike since it is track focused and geared towards moto racing teams where there really is no need for brand recognition and prestige. Moto enthusiasts are very familiar with the HP nameplate and if targeting that group of people, well then. Applying the M badging to a motorcycle seems like a natural desire for BMW to want to do, but like their M cars, which are largely just bought by road cocks (an M branded condom is a bit on the nose isn’t it 😉), I could see an “M” bike as something that offers crazy HP over the standard, but also bunches of eye candy thrown in. This bike has been given everything actually desired by race teams, but branded as if the target audience is more concerned about brand recognition and prestige and 0-60 times over anything else IMO so there’s a bit of a disconnect as I see it.

Being an NTEC tire they should be set for track use on significantly lower pressure than for road use to give much more grip. Coppice Melbourne loop, and Goddard's all the better for that.
I'm sure that Mark would have sorted that if you asked. He's a friendly bloke.
I guess BMW were happy with Michael Dunlop's TT outings, before pandemic...

Gotta admit, to me the S1000rr range has always been this. A racers bike. But I've never been massively sold on it. There's something about it that's feels quite "clinical". The things built to do a job and that's go fast and handle like a dream and at that it's good probably up there with the best there's no denying. But if I was to compare this and a fireblade next to each other to me there's something about the Blade as an example that has a lot more character to it. Maybe just my opinion. Or the older ZX10r "The widowmaker" (Can't remember which exact year the WM was) which much as it may not have the same figures, was an absolute monster with a reputation. It was almost "Feared". Still BMW is a beast with performance, handling and an exhaust note unlike any other. It's a damn good bike. Just like I said feels a bit built to simply do one job. I'd like the idea if I had the money (Ha) of having one for track use only where I could see some of its potential. But if I was to right now be given a choice of bike for day to day I'd go 04 Blade or newer Gsxr.

Feeling much happier about my 2020 RR purchase now. Looks like I'm not missing out on much and its a lot more $$$ for the M. You need to do the reflash for fueling and a full Akra either way since this has to meet all emissions and noise requirements. Much better off buying the RR and doing the tune and system.

Great honest review with good detail. Thanks for that.
A job to believe it came with those tyres on a press day. What was BMW thinking of.

Modern superbikes make one feel like a hero! They're SO much fun to ride... I would love to ride the new RR!
Also, I disagree, I like the Letter/displacement model codes... Keep your names, you car lover guy you!

I think manufacturers leave protectors off as if you then drop your bike how many replacement parts would you need ?..... A lot less !

Round 1 at Oulton Park had the SSTK1000 Lap Record set on a NON 'M' Spec bike 2 weeks ago..! Even the teams have said there is no benefit to the Aero package and half the riders can't tell any difference. If you smash one up then getting parts is impossible, so is it worth it, that's still a big NO.

Looks good for track days. BMW still has to prove itself at race days.

As road bikes both the R7 and RC30 weren’t that great or powerful but excelled on the track, I think this is the same here

I can’t help but think the suspension felt soft and a bit pap because the stock setting are most likely meant for someone around 170 kilos. As we all know, despite his best efforts, that isn’t Chris.

Fantastic review Chris, always enjoy watching your views. You did a review a while ago about a HP4 which was not road legal. Why don't race teams simply put the guts of that into a S1000RR? Looking forward to more superbike reviews.

Great bike (i own a 2020 S1000RR hockenheim grey and most of the modern superbikes) but the cheezy paint/sticker job gotta go

“Welcome to Grandma’s House”🤣 - mine may have only had a Honda Cub, bless her, but I’m sure she’d still put on a better selection of German home made Streusel and Mohnkuchen than those plastic Mr. Kiplings...🤷🏻‍♂️ Great honest video - now to test the RSV Factory😃👍🏻

In Canada the S1000rr is a $22,000 bike. The M1000rr is just over $50,000... I REALLY can't find the $28,000 extra in the M...

Damn, so Akra even built the cats and that hideous thing before the silencer ? Never seen that before but the stamp is there and the finish is so much better than oem units made by the bike manufacturer.

Very honest review, especially given your BM links. I suppose it wont harm sales in any way as like you say, most will be bought by racers and nothing you said will put them off in any way.

With all the might and resources BMW have at hand they've never won a major title to my knowledge. No BSB or WSBK.
Be interesting to see if this latest weapon will change that.
Thanks for the video. I hope you get to ride one in more favourable conditions.
I'm new to 44teeth . Bloody good stuff. Looking forward to more super twin action.
    Cheers 🍺

Looks to me like the geometry of the front end can't keep up with the power of the engine when the taps are turned on.
    Beautiful bike though.
