    What is Liberation Pedagogy? Paolo Freire lived from 1921-1997 in Brazil. His Major Works included Pedagogy of the Oppressed and the Pedagogy of Hope.
    His Basic question was Why don’t people in poverty act together to further their own interests? Freire found that people who were in poverty could become aware of their oppression, but not understand its implications for their lives. What they needed is to become fully conscious of their circumstances.
    He called this process: conscienti-zation (conscientizacao in Portugese). It is gaining a consciousness of one’s circumstances. Liberation as conscienti-zation Is a process of increasing one’s awareness especially about oppression.
    The goal of Liberation is To become increasingly conscientized (no end) And so free from one’s oppression Without also reversing the hierarchy and oppressing others as one becomes free oneself.
    One of the biggest obstacles to liberation is the production of sub-oppressors. Freire says that “It is a rare peasant who, once ‘promoted’ to overseer, does not become more of a tyrant towards his former comrades than the owner himself.” The problem is that they were not uplifted from their position by helping others, but through a commonality in oppressing an inferior group.....
