Teens experience ageism too | Amelia Conway | TEDxManhattanBeach

  • Amelia believes when what we can or can't do is determined by our age, we are limiting ourselves and our society. At the young age of 11, Amelia started directing commercials, short films, and documentaries. 4 years later, she reflects on defying ageism, how she has benefitted, and her hopes for the future. Amelia Conway is a film maker of short films, music videos and commercials. She is also fourteen years old, and can’t figure out why her age is such a big deal. Amelia made her debut in the entertainment industry when she co-hosted a radio show on the internet station “Little Radio” at seven years old. Since her radio days, she has gone on to make several short films and music videos. She has worked with many well-known brands - including Toms Shoes, Beats Music and American Girl Doll - and recently directed campaigns for Target and NASCAR.
Amelia has a finely-honed taste for music and old films that has served her not only in her filmmaking, but also in her musical endeavors. She has been a member of Ryan Gosling’s band “Dead Man’s Bones” in the children’s choir, and traveled on the “Railroad Revival Tour” with Mumford and Sons.
For Amelia it’s not about being known as a young director, or even a girl director for that matter. It’s about being a creative director, one aimed at inspiring people of every age and gender to do what they love and pursue their passions no matter the obstacles. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

One time in school we had to do this project on ageism. My teacher had told us that ageism only happened in the elderly, but I wanted to show that it happened in young people too. We had to do a project on discrimination and i chose ageism. I tried to keep it balanced and included examples of ageism in elderly and children so I could show that it happened in both. One of my points happened to be “young adults voices aren’t heard as much as adults.”
I handed this project over into my teacher and went to school the next day. When I looked back at my project script, I realized that my point was gone. I asked the teacher if it was a mistake and she said “ no, I just don’t thing young people should have power, they don’t know much”
This experience shows how much ageism occurs in young people.

I’m twenty something, and while you make a valid point, I do think there’s a difference in hurt ageism has on the young vs the elderly. The discrimination is distinct with each as well. I find the variant of ageism the elderly experience to be far more destructive to the psyche and yes, physically as well. (Studies show Chronophobia and the effects of ageism shortens lifespan).
Imagine being victim to agist abuse when you’re older, and already deal with personal struggles of regret, fear of missing out, etc.
Just to go a little further, think about it from distinct generations. To even scorn at the silent generation alive today for example, really whom the contemporary stereotype of aging being breaking down originated from in the first place is so damn unfair. Everything they uniquely endured.
All of us youth have encountered the ageism you mention. For us tho, we can quickly bounce back in life and prove the naysayers wrong. Starting out in corporate after college for example is still while we’re young.
I’m already dealing with immense personal dread about getting old and dealing with not utilizing every millisecond of the day to the fullest, irrationally, I know.
But it goes to show how powerful ageism against the elderly is

I feel this WAY too much. When I was in school I always got in trouble for doing anything I liked or got in trouble for asking questions. I was ashamed for not knowing everything. (I was, what...10?) But I always did art and loved it, and outside of school I did paid commissions and went toe to toe with adults who did the art for a living.
If you ask me, ageism mostly comes from School BS where they have this overwhelming desire to control every aspect of your life like some sorta dictator.

You’re saying that teens are inexperienced and we need experience to be better at life. Which is right. But adults who brag about experience haven’t experienced everything in this world too. Tell me. Has every person over the age of 30 experienced every career, has been in every kind of human relationship possible, has tried every sport/ art and been in the place of every human on earth? Experience is important because it helps people feel things, and experience is the precondition of knowledge. But what’s telling all these arrogant adults that they’ve more experience than teens just cuz they’re older? What if the teen had a harder life?

Or create scopes of every single person to speak and be heard. This girl is talking about age discrimination, so concentrate on that. You can talk about financial/ status discrimination later, na! 😃

She makes me want to be ageist to young people. She was directing commercials at 11 but somehow she needs our support. People work their whole lives and never get that opportunity and you probably only got it because you where young. You are a benefit of ageism and selective discrimitiory quoto filling. stop complaining and make your money, and anyone that feels bad for her is just trying to fulfill and relate to a victimcomplex. The ageism youths experience is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING compared to what older middle aged adults experience. For them it's temporary. For the latter is permanent and ever growing. Teens have it too easy... they're at liberty to do the unforgivable the unconcienciable and never get punished for it whereas people like myself the consequences of life long punishment are guaranteed. Not to mention getting a job social acceptance....that's a gazillion times harder if you're old.. you're made to feel embarrassed just about and employers don't look at you so keenly...if you're young employers are more sympathetic.

The fact that a teen talking about their personal experience with age discrimination sparked your decision to undermine that experience with a simple "you kids have it so easy. Wait until you're old" is actually supporting the very statement she is making here: Ageism affects young people too.
Obviously those experiences are different, but that doesn't make one more valid than another. We should be striving to stop age discrimination together, not furthering the generational divide.
