    One of the Greatest Classical composers. In his lifetime, he was Underated. After he died, he was finally appreciated. A wonderful talent.

    Schubert's early symphonies are just exciting -- "that's all there is too it," as the American idiom goes. He had not really developed his mature voice, but wow, did he master earlier forms. And this music is so -- uncharacteristically, for poor Franzl -- joyous. Such a tragedy for humanity that he died so young, like so many British poets of the time.
    THNAK YOU for posting this with the score! Fine rendition!!

      Steve Berlin I love this symphony! It's joyous and has a youthful innocence throughout. It's more "classical" than early Beethoven or late Mozart and Haydn, but nevertheless Schubert's inexhaustible gift of melody shines through.

    When you hear early Schubert works one needs to remember he is 15 or 16 so there easy ,commonplace jollity is the world of a "kid" who hasn't experienced a lot and it sounds like the happy-go lucky works(both Symphonies nos.1&2 begin like overtures or the frothy entertainment of the time. There is No or very little depth (after the exposition ,this young man shows some depth!the 6th minute astonished me ! )The development too is not boring-sometime a startling for the time transposition . We hear Symphonies 8 and 9 because there is nothing like them in this time period aside from Beeth and Mendellsohn

    Schubert baseou-se no primeiro movimento do balé Criaturas de Prometheus, de Beethoven, para escrever o primeiro movimento desta sinfonia. Adoro a versão de Schubert, fortemente apocalíptica. O quarto movimento também é genial!

    No wonder Dvorak was impressed with Schubert's early symphonies. The invention and orchestration are amazing for a composer of any age, let alone a teenager. But the second movement of the Second, pretty as the tune is, is a bit monotonous... the only time I feel this in all the Schubert I've listened to.

    Can I just point out, as perhaps others already have, that the picture you have chosen at the beginning of the video is not of Schubert. It is in fact a portrait of Karl Joseph Maria von Hartmann (1793-1876). This picture has, since the end of the 19th century, often been mistakenly labelled as a portrait of the 16-year-old Schubert, but serious research in the last 50 years has now conclusively shown this to be a case of misidentification.

    • @bartjebartmans
      @bartjebartmans  Год назад

      Yes it has been pointed out for as long as the video is up. Wrong picture but the right music. In the end that's what matters.

    Why is the whole piece lowered a semitone

    • @iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiivy
      @iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiivy 4 года назад +5

      While it's not a semitone flat, it is a bit lower than modern tuning. These instruments are replicas of actual early 19th century instruments (the kinds that Schubert would have actually known). Though there was no universal standard of tuning at the time this piece was composed, most performers today playing on period instruments tune slightly lower than modern instruments today.

      A = 432, maybe. Most orchestras since 1939 are A = 440, and most music since then is thus said to be played through bad frequencies. The new pitch A = 440 was brought in by Adolf Hitler. But those orchestras that use period instruments use A = 432 usually. Some very old pianos are tuned to A = 415, so can only be used for piano solo repertoire.
