Don Bosco Educates Catholic Girls on Modesty | Ep. 43

  • Don Bosco’s kind fatherly manner in dealing with his oratory boys was the exact opposite of the severe approach to discipline that was popular at the time. Often he would go well out of his way to help souls that he barely even knew, just acquaintances.
However, he did also know how to put the fear of God into people, how to chastise those who severely needed it. I will be telling two stories in this episode that illustrate both sides of this incredible man.
He was a multi-faceted diamond of sanctity, showing both mercy and justice for those souls entrusted to his care.

I think it’s important to note how things have changed in the last century and a half. Nowadays relatively immodest dress is so common that most people don’t even think twice about it. People don’t have to dress like nuns per se but we should also remember that nuns’ dress wasn’t that different from local attire where the order was founded, back in the day. So better to look more like a nun than typical beach or casual attire today…. Our Lady reminded the seers at Fatima about this, too!

As a Catholic, I humbly ask you if you would consider to disable comments for any further videos on modesty. Many people make good comments, but not all. People should go to a good and holy priest for advice or to the Marylike Standards of Modesty (if they have the correct version). Nobody should discuss what is, and is not, immodest on a youtube channel as doing so causes scandal and invites the worst kind of trolls and people who wish to drag one's mind into the mud. John Bosco who encouraged all to strive for perfection in not only actions, but also thoughts, would surely not approve of the conversation. Such things should not be named among us. Perhaps a link to the Marylike standards would be useful. This is an occasion for both men and women to act bravely (as Matthew Miller has done here in recounting the story) as all the vitriol of Hell comes forth, literally. Another video you posted of John Bosco said there were two main sins that sent people to Hell, one of them was immodesty.

A woman came one day (during the time of the crazy years after WWI, where the dress were revealing.) to St-Frère André complaining about a pneumonia. He answered he was not surprised because of his dress. He then, game her a medal of St-Joseph, asking her to rub herself. Then he add with his humour: ""Maybe it will make cloth grow on your chest."

I believe the Cardinal Vicar of Pope Pius XI stated:
“A dress cannot be called decent which is cut deeper than two fingers breadth under the pit of the throat; which does not cover the arms at least to the elbows; and scarcely reaches a bit beyond the knees. Furthermore, dresses of transparent materials are improper.”
This suggests that sleeves should, ideally speaking, at least be elbow length. However, the famous document on Marylike modesty says that, due to the difficulty of finding modest clothing in our day, quarter length sleeves are also acceptable.

It can certainly become vain. It really depends on your intentions. Are you wearing perfume to "not be a bother to others around you" or are you wearing it to "make others attracted to you." Actually, he preached fervently against Mohammedanism: ruclips.net/video/iJTdoWdIato/видео.html
Sleeveless fashions only came out in America recently in the 60's, popularized by Jackie Kennedy. Are you saying that American fashion was Muslim before that? No, it was a remnant of Christian civilization. 60's fashions like that and the mini-skirt of the 70's were hotly debated in their time and we're merely desensitized. I stand with Saint John Bosco. It's an extremely balanced view and is a reminder that Original Sin exists and we have to fight lust.
