    I think it is fantastic that you take your time to explain what you are doing. I find too many You-tubers rush through their explanations and leave out critical detail. The tunnel is looking great and I will definitely be using that technique when I get around to construct Nelson tunnel on my layout.

      Thanks very much John! I get annoyed at myself for taking so long to explain stuff....but I try to balance that with not rushing the information ! I'm glad you enjoy the videos and get some tips from them.

      Thanks very much Bob! It turned out better than I thought, especially after a wash of dark grey paint. The cool part is the loco noise almost disappears as the train moves through the tunnel ! The cab ride through will be pretty neat too , if I can light it right? I'm glad you enjoy the videos sir and learn some tips as I do!

    That tunnel is looking good, Gregg! I would like to mention (yes, I know: d*mn Yankee!) that soaking plaster cloth does not yield the best results. It tends to wash off a good bit of the plaster that is on the cloth. The way I was taught is to hold the strip by both ends and just drag it through the pan of water, maybe 2-3 seconds in the water. You may find it sticks better to the walls that way, also. I'm really enjoying watching your layout take shape.

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  4 года назад

      Thank you Sir! I have found it changes with the type of cloth? This brand has a very hard plaster , and I need to soak it for a good 20-30 sec to soften the plaster? Maybe the better /worse quality has softer plaster that softens more easily? I also found with this brand , that I need the brush to get the plaster to activate better.
      i'm glad you enjoy the progress and I appreciate the comments and support.
      Cheers Gregg.

    Greg, When you make your tunnel portal, I'd suggest you use a "Key-Stone" design for the arch. cheers john

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  4 года назад +1

      Hi John, I did think of that , but was going for a more modern concrete look? I have looked at dozens of photos and none are the same.....so it looks like , with concrete, anything goes? But I may try a keystone arch with the next pair for the curved tunnel?
      Thanks for watching.
      Gregg.

    G'Day Gregg
    Nicely done matey, looking good so far. Here's a tip for you if the Plaster cloth gets a bit expensive if you need to cover large area's. Use Chux Super Wipes dipped into a watered down mix of ordinary builders plaster (use a paint roller tray as its easy to then drag the wipe through the plaster mix). Just don't make it too "wet". I also use a wire mesh underlay to form shapes I need, quick and easy. I use an aluminium flyscreen wire mesh from Bunnings for low weighted areas and a heavier mesh also from Bunnings (Gutter mesh, its stainless Steel, bit more expensive but bloody good) for those areas that need a bit of strength under the plaster.

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  4 года назад

      Thanks Gibs! I have thought about the Chux, but I may give that a go on larger areas! I have so much cardboard from all the Ikea crap I have bought, it is one way to get rid of it..LOL. The mesh is a good idea too!
      Cheers Gregg.

    I really like the concept, especially if I was to run my loco that has a spy camera installed. Only concern would be accessing a derail inside. What is your plan?

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  4 года назад +2

      Thank you ! And I will be running my camera car through the tunnel in Part 3, which will be cool! As for access, due to the smooth sides, you could push a derailed car out if you had to , but honestly I don't get derailments .....can't remember the last one I had that wasn't on a turnout? But it's my problem if it happens..LOL
      Cheers Gregg.

  • @SFCRambo60
    @SFCRambo60 4 года назад

    Why didn't you just go 10 to 15" in on both ends and leave the rest open in case of trouble and who's going to look inside the tunnel?

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  4 года назад +1

      That was the plan , but this is about that from each end, and was a experiment to see if the idea worked , and was never really meant to go on the layout! But it turned out so good that I decided to leave it , so we'll wait and see!
      Thanks for watching.

      @@FishplateFilms Gregg, I love your work and I your channel but as an Aussie I beg to differ. I modelled US stuff as a kid because there were no Aussie options and US stuff going around was GP40s, SD40s and even bulldog F7s etc. US locos these days are all the same like those things coming out of the tunnel in your opening scene - impressive but boring. In NSW you get ex Vic X class, T class, C class, S class and even double ended bulldog B class still (SSR), you can get BRMs, GMs, ELs, And, CLPs, G class, 49s 81s, 48s, 82s,CM as well as the Gt46 and Ca44 modern stuff plus more. All of that stuff runs on mainline everywhere with so many different liveries: PacNat, Aurizon, CFCLA, GWA, SSR, Qube, FIE, Crawford's, CRL, SCT, etc. Where I live we get grain trains, cement trains, coal, intermodal, louvre vans, bulk ore, well wagons, steel, etc daily hauled by any number of combinations of the above locos. Plus XPT and Explorer CountryLink services and two car Endeavour sets. Think of all the different colours, shapes, sizes, age and power of those combinations. Have you seen SSRs latest rebuilt CLP12 "Casper" - what a specimen! You need to move south of the border 😉. Plus the quality of models from Auscision, SDS, Southern Rail, OnTrack etc is second to none. Sparky you should check some of the Aussie stuff out. Anyway, thanks for your great channel Gregg. Your content has inspired me a lot and your techniques are great. Inox, rock painting, track laying etc are as good as it gets - it's just a shame you have toy railways up in QLD 😃

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  4 года назад +1

      @@peterainsworth8466 Thanks Peter! I'm afraid I don't share you love of Aussie trains :-). I do like the X class and the T class are impressive in the flesh! I don't like all the "boxes" we have here, though I have a soft spot for a pair of EL's in CFCL colours! Also the 81's and 82's are ok . The model quality is finally up to US standards , but the prices are crazy! But if I had to model Aussie stuff , at . least now it runs well and has good detail.
      But I'm afraid a pair of SD40[-2's on a grain train does it for me ..LOL
      Cheers Gregg.
