A Really good tutorial, however, just a tip, regarding any unused wires from the decoder, I recently put a decoder in an A4 Peppercorn I built, and the blue wire which I didn't use at that time, was left along with the yellow white and mauve free and not covered or tied down, I proceeded to run the A4 then after about the 3rd time around the decoder blew, the cause was that the end of one of the wires shorted out on the frame, now i either tape, them, or use liquid insulation or heat shrink over the ends to ensure that the bare ends don't short out, I must have been extremely unlucky however, 3 of the guys in the model train club said it has happened to them, can get expensive, if you short one of these decoders, I suggest you protect the unused wires from any possibility of a short no matter how remote. Hope this helps guys.

Some people complain about this set up using the connector. I find it great, and when the TTS sound chips become available, their fitting will be quite staightforward.
The slightly earlier locos, with the dcc chip in the loco, are much more difficult, and will pose a challenge when fitting TTS.

I've just inherited so much train set from my dad. I've just dismantled it and now it's the hard part of making my own layout. I'm keen to use the DCC, a lot of his stuff is from pre-90's so about to go and watch some videos on how to do this with them. I did see a few of his sets do have either "DCC Ready" or "DCC Fitted" so will save me a little work. One question, if I make then DCC. Can they still be used on an analogue controller?

Very helpful. Does every different engine have to have a decoder for DCC?

Hi - 2 things really - Have you ever fitted at TTS Sound Chip to an A4, and I notice toward the end of the video you have link wires. Do you use spring clips in the points to make them all live, and if so, why use link wires - I thought it was either/or but not both

Hello when it says on a loco dcc ready ,will it have sound or do you have to fit a chip

Just to add, if it's just DCC alone it won't have sound, to have sound you want a DCC decoder with the sound speaker/decoder (DCC sound). They can certainly be more fiddly to fit, but the Hornby TTS aren't relatively too expensive...I am working on a class 31 now and will soon work on a RailRoad class A4 (came with the starter set). I have actually bought some smaller speakers and in the process of splicing the wires and soldering them as the speaker that it came with is too big (unless I do more surgery). Some shops may offer a fitting service for a fee, if you find reputable one.

Thank you for this video very helpful. I have one question though. Did you have a loose wire when you connected the decoder? I have bought the same decoder but mine has a wire (mauve in colour) that doesn’t go anywhere. I though I have seen the same in your video but I am not sure. Please let me know if you can. I am totally new to this. Thanks :)

Nice video content! Excuse me for the intrusion, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you tried - Januke Henatalie Formula (do a google search)? It is a smashing one off product for operating a DCC model railroad minus the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my cooworker finally got astronomical success with it.

shouldn't you remove the capacitors? I usually do that when dcc fitting my engines.

    • @stonehartfloydfan

not really an issue the cap is for RF suppression over the motor.

Better to remove the caps. They can cause problems with DCC

It's going to be hard, if the (old) engine doesn't have such a bridge plate...
