Pantani's actual record was set two years earlier. Yes we know there were no blood doping controls then but it is still incredible to think Pantani would have finished over 1km ahead of Geraint Thomas when he won in 2018 after being pulled by the Sky train most of the way.
no way. Haven't seen this video in years. I saw this for the first time in august 2012. I still remember that day. I was 14, huge fan of cycling. But back then i didnt know much about cycling history. This video of Marco shocked me. Eversince that time i am a Pantani fan. I used to go for a training ride and climb in drops on every climb. Lol the things you do as a kid. Amazing editing combined with a song that weirdly fits perfectly. Possibly the best cycling video out there. And of course Marco and his hypnotizing style. Chapeau!
Marco Pantani took the record in 1995 with 36:40 minutes. Amongst the modern riders, Carlos Sastre managed 39:30 minutes in 2008 and Nairo Quintana did 39:48 in 2013. Given that the technology have made huge progress from the 90s until to today, imagine how fast Pantani would have done this today.
Sehr Gut Lappen I doubt 'technology' between then and now would make that much difference. It's about weight really, and Pantani's Willier weighed about 6.9kg (with no power meter) same as bikes today.. As for stiffness, that bike would have been about as stiff as anything today.
Yeah, might be. Just for the climbing, technology won't make such a big difference. But considering that the riders have went through 100 km before the climbing, I think 'technology' actually could play a big role. But I really don't know. I was not even 5 years when this took place.
Sehr Gut Lappen That's true. Pantani set that record after already climbing two Cols, so it was incredible. I just checked, that Willier was about 7kgs, used a downtube front mech shifter (to save more weight) had no power meter (which actually adds quite a bit of weight to modern bikes, and brings them 'up' to the 6.8 kg weight limit) and very light (even by today's standards) climbing wheels. Even steel bikes can attain very high stiffness, so I think the 'efficiency' of his machine was totally on a par with today. It's true that modern bikes could go a lot lighter, especially if they ditched power meters and the UCI reduced the weight limit, but I doubt that would happen. The biggest difference was the drugs of course!
+Gavin “M500” Z I'm almost certain Pantani wasn't on steel here. Should be alloy. Last steel bike to win the tour was '94, but I'm unsure when the last steel steed ridden was... I'd guess '99 or 2000
I remember watching this as a teenage lad. If you told me then that 25 years later a young lad from my home county of Yorkshire in the U.K would win on the Alpe I wound not have believed you. But along came Tom Pidcock, he wasn't even born when Marco didi this.

Ogni tributo a Pantani è giusto e doveroso: Pantani deve essere celebrato ovunque e per sempre, sia per onorare la sua grandezza, sia per evidenziare l'infamia di chi ce l'ha sulla coscienza.
Props to Jan Ulrich - at the start, Pantani is out of his saddle, just dancing on his pedals like a feather. Ulrich stays seated, grinding away in a tall gear, putting down some massive watts as he attempts to keep up.
@mortenfrosthansen84 yes they used PED s but I guarantee others have been equally doped and could not lay down the times that this man did up this historic climb, stop giving all the credit to pharmaceuticals. What people fail to realuze is that regardless of them doping or not it still takes immense effort. All doping does is recover your body. And not even fully. So if they ride 1,ooo k and then pull this off with doping hard it would be like riding for 700k and then doing it. Your body doesn't fully recover from drugs. So try riding hard like these guys for a few days and then pulling this off. Shit, just try this one climb and then talk shit. It's like criticizing nodubuilders for doping. They still work their ass off 6 hours a day.
"All doping does is recover your body".... epic fail... EPO allows your blood to carry more oxygen which gives more endurance. Yes they work but I wonder what the undoped record is?

(With?) or without drugs, Pantani is hands down the most audacious climber the tour has ever seen..23+ kmph on 7.8% degree slope for 13.8 km (sustained power of atleast 250W against gravity), isnt there any limit to this mans capability?
1997, 2001 and 2004. These years produced some of the craziest, fastest times up the Alpe. Anyone thinking Ullrich, Armstrong, Pantani, Virenque, Basso, Riis, etc weren't on drugs is fooling themselves to the max.

It was also only the 3rd stage in the high mountains, while Huez was the 6th in 2011. The riders had just come off a rest day in 97 (2nd stage after RD), while in 2011 the rest day was already 4 stages away. Run into Huez was very flat in 1997; had Galibier in 2011. There is also the helmets, Contador going early and forcing the pace in 2011,18th stage was hard, etc.
These are Legends , the finish looks like near , even in the start of the Port they look like they are doing the last spring . The last Racer doing this was Alberto Contador, since that cyclist It is not the same .
Watching it again: Nobody rode the first 2-3 kilometers in that climb faster as Armstrong in 2001. He was able to gain around 45 seconds in about 6 minutes against Ullrich, and after 12 minutes he was already almost 90 seconds ahead. But in the end he won the stage by 120 seconds or 2 minutes ahead. Means he was only able to take 30 seconds more of Ullrich in the final 25 minutes of the climb. This underlines the difference between Armstrong and Marco Pantani. Even if Pantani never rode the first 2-3 kilometers so fast as Armstrong, and never had that kind of explosive acceleration like Lance did especially in 2001, but Marco was always able to become faster and faster over a time of 30 minutes or so, why Lance was only able to ride very fast for about 10-15 minutes, and the final 20-30 minutes of a climb he rode still as fast as his rivals, but not faster anymore. He rode away very fast and took the most time in the first 2-4 kilometers of a climb, but in the final 5-10 km he wasnt able to take much more out of his opponents, but Marco was.
There is a story about commentator Paul Sherwen when he crashes early in a mountain stage & battles over 4 climbs alone, he is outside the time limit but allowed to continue for showing outstanding courage. regarding drugs, "so there is no doubt in my mind he ( Lance Armstrong) took EPO during the 99 Tour." quote from Dr Michael Ashenden part of the team that developed the test for EPO.
