    Seeing games like this, Shadow Warrior 3 and Ultrakill really make me realise that Doom Eternal is doing to the FPS genre exactly what Doom 1 did on its release - completely revolutionise the genre in ways we didn’t think possible. We’re at that transitional phase where games with similar mechanics are almost being labelled as “doom eternal clones”, just like the “doom clone” phenomenon in the 90’s, but before we know it this style of resource management and specific weapon usage is gonna be an established formula for most fps games (again, just like Doom 1), I bet you anything 😎

      @@cyber_combat_dev Well damn, I’m surprised. Idk what it is then, but there seems to have just been a sudden switch in the genre in recent years where devs decided to completely shake up the fps formula, with it all being rolled into a perfect package with Doom Eternal’s release. Either way, it definitely looks like games are starting to follow in its gameplay formula now 🤘

    "I sincerely believe that limitless freedom is not conducive to creativity"
    This is not really true though. The easiest example of this is Dwarf Fortress. That game allows you to do anything you want. Sure, its another genre, but the amount of freedom that games gives and what a lot of people do just to exploit that freedom to the maximum amount possible is amazing.
    Doom eternal tried to make the problem solving about giving multiple options and you having to decide which ones are the most optimal, if what you usually do doesn't seem to work nicely for your situation then you should try another thing, Turbo Overkill seems more of a sandbox approach of "Here are all the tools for you, try to discover all the possible ways to use them yourself", not for solving problems, but to let people who wants to try stuff do it because they can.

    • @Deunstephe
      @Deunstephe 2 года назад +4

      The thing about Dwarf Fortress though is that it's not in a vacuum. You're given the freedom to do anything you want, but you still have to meet the needs of your clan as it grows and expands - which means that the game gives you problems that you have to use your freedom to solve or else everyone dies. There's still consequences to your actions regardless of how free you are to use them.

    • @Dexiteo
      @Dexiteo 2 года назад +2

      The needs in DF are easily met, its been like 10 years since your fort would fall because you didn't had socks.
      And I'm talking about the bigger projects, like those people who use necromancy to maximize the amount of fat and muscle the farm animals have, when you can exceed what you normally need by doing nothing in particular.
      Or when people started chaining mermaids so they would have babies that would fall into their deaths so they could sell the bones to merchants when having 2 or 3 legendary cookers meant that you could buy the whole wagon with a few cooked foods.
      Nobody needed to do any of those stuff but still they did because the game hints that doing it is a possibility.
      And the game is filled with things like this, from using forbidden beast to any other weird stuff just because they want to do it.

    • @archfiend334
      @archfiend334 2 года назад +6

      The problem isn't in giving the player the freedom to use a wide variety of weapons in situations of their choosing, it's making a wide variety of weapons that are so strong that any one of them can carry the player, or designing them so that there are weapons that are clearly, objectively better than others. That's freedom, but the fact that everyone will either use a single weapon to carry them or that the whole player base will have the same exact loadout is certainly not creative.
      I've never played Dwarf Fortress, but the way you're describing it, it seems like it incentivizes playing with your options until you find the optimal approach to different situations. Am I right?

    • @fuckso2342
      @fuckso2342 2 года назад +5

      I would word it better. Having the freedom options is pointless if each of those options are meaningless. Many open word and even singleplayer games fuck this up by making every option work all the time or overpowered which in turn makes every option feel hollow and pointless. There is no real tangible effects on the game or player reward. Fallout New Vegas was one of the few open world games that actually had massive meaningful consequences in the game on player options and that's why its soo revered. The "here's bunch tools have fun" approach only really works imo for pure sandbox games. I have yet to see a singleplayer fps with a crafted campaign that has broken combat balancing were nothing matters fun to play.

    The one big problem I have is that on the second highest difficulty it starts pushing you into playing well. But at the same time it gets borderline frustrating to get oneshot offscreen so often. And on the highest it is full on frustrating. So if the damage stays like that I dont even want to have smart ai on top of that or it gets super frustrating.

    I really liked the ammo limitation in doom eternal. it made me realize a game balanced around infinite ammo is better than a game with ammo limitation but too much available ammo (not talking about ultrakill, which I haven't played yet. just in general). aside from a strict but purposeful ammo limitation which is probably the best case scenario for a shooters.

    • @btchiaintkidding7837
      @btchiaintkidding7837 Год назад +1

      about Ultrakill
      if anything, i feel waaay more pressured and stressed out to switch between weapons in Ultrakill than any other fps tbh
      sure the ammo is infinite but the game severely punishes your score if you spam weapons mindlessly, since the style meter is always in the face right on your screen all the time and scoring high score is literally the selling point in ultrakill.
      example; you can still use your pistols base attack even after you use the charge attack and while it is om cooldown but that's just really hampers your score gains since "weapon freshness" gets into the "stale" state and hampers your scores.
      if anything, utrakill is better to be approached as a stylish fighting/action game than a straight up fps, and especially the main bosses really makes it even more feel like a fighting game than a fps

      i had this issue with Cultic. i love it.
      but the game gives you waaay too much ammo.
      like you can use environments against the enemies, Throw/sh^^t lanterns, set traps with unlit dynamite, Use/move explosive barrels, kick/sh^^t enemy's dynamites , a solid melee system, bait enemy attacks int friendly fire but the game gives you so much ammo that all the other things you dont even end up trying after a while. cuz u just have too much ammo. you can literally go through the whole game only with the handgun once u upgrade its accuracy u wont even need to rely on rifles lmao

    Hey Mayo,
    If you think that Crative solutions are more fun than freestyling in a vacuum you should probably try out Divinity Original Sin II. It's an openworld RPG with DnD influences and round based combat. I know that sounds like a ton of red flags and when someone described the game to me i was very skeptical because i really don't enjoy openworld games, and round based RPGs. But it's actually REALLY GOOOD. The player is constantly held accountable for his actions and once you make a choice you can't go back

    I'm on board with almost everything you said, except for "we need big arenas". I heavily disagree. I mean, of course, two or three big arenas per level would be cool, but don't change the game into just a string of arenas with platforming in between. This is what Shadow Warrior 3 did and it's very underwhelming. Turbo Overkill feels really great as a natural progression of smaller and bigger fights, platforming, a little bit of exploration and backtracking to gain access to new locations. The last of level of the demo is just fucking amazing, very satisfying to navigate. Can't wait for the full game.
    With that said, here's my list of fixes:
    1. Get rid of the second dash - to make the fights more balanced. Double dash, especially upgraded, is waaay too overpowered. It works in Doom Eternal, but here it's just a get out of jail free card. Especially when you consider the fact, that pressing crouch in mid-air kinda works like a dash anyway.
    2. Add very mobile enemies (high jumping, flying, dashing, maybe even wallrunning).
    3. Add enemies with long-range attacks.
    4. Make enemies stand out from the environment. The art style is very busy and sometimes everything just blends together, easy to miss some guy with a shotgun standing in the corner.
    5. Heavily nerf the ground stomp and the aimbot pistol mode (both are basically free multikills and require little to no skill).

    i'd love this type of games to be more popular, i want my crosshairs to work, i want rocket launchers to be more than a boring trade killer, i want actual music instead of the same "epic" trumpets that play on every single modern game, im not saying this things are necessarily bad; look at bioshock infinite for example, tho that game made every modernized part feel natural and actually good, i didn't know how putting 2 rockets instead of a single one made a gun so much fun to use, and the crosshairs are an example of a perfect middle ground: wanna aim? then aim, don't wanna aim? then don't, simple as that, i know i sound like a greasy white monster addict but i do like some modern videogames, tho not much that i own... only ones i could say are bf4 and 1, clownfield 2042 (yes, THAT clownfield that costs less than a dollar and ironically it's better than cod and bf) and a lotta far cry's. I just hope devs make games around being fun instead of realistic-ish, because if the game has red dot sights on an era where they didn't exist why make the game realistic, because people aren't even playing because of that; if people want immersion they're gonna play something immersive, not a game with drum mag lugers with 30 different types of gadgets in it.
    also, nice video, glad to see apogee's at it again!

    I usually don't like the constant suggestion for resource management in games like this, but for Turbo Overkill i think it makes sense; from what i can see, Trigger Happy is not promoting the game as a "style shooter" like Ultrakill, where unlimited ammo make sense.
    Most of the points you listed are fair, except for the comparisons with Ultrakill, which are still either incorrect or/and incomplete.
    I appreciate the point you made with the invisible wall on the first level; easter eggs and secrets are my favourite thing to look for in games like this, and i too would've been disappointed to see that.

    In the first age, in the first battle, when the shadows first lengthened, one stood. Burned by the embers of Armageddon, his soul blistered by the fires of Hell and tainted beyond ascension, he chose the path of perpetual torment. In his ravenous hatred he found no peace; and with boiling blood he scoured the Umbral Plains seeking vengeance against the dark lords who had wronged him. He wore the crown of the Night Sentinels, and those that tasted the bite of his sword named him... the Doom Slayer.
    Tempered by the fires of Hell, his iron will remained steadfast through the passage that preys upon the weak. For he alone was the Hell Walker, the Unchained Predator, who sought retribution in all quarters, dark and light, fire and ice, in the beginning and the end, and he hunted the slaves of Doom with barbarous cruelty; for he passed through the divide as none but demon had before.
    And in his conquest against the blackened souls of the doomed, his prowess was shown. In his crusade, the seraphim bestowed upon him terrible power and speed, and with his might he crushed the obsidian pillars of the Blood Temples. He set forth without pity upon the beasts of the nine circles. Unbreakable, incorruptible, unyielding, the Doom Slayer sought to end the dominion of the dark realm.
    he age of his reckoning was uncounted. The scribes carved his name deep in the tablets of Hell across eons, and each battle etched terror in the hearts of the demons. They knew he would come, as he always had, as he always will, to feast on the blood of the wicked. For he alone could draw strength from his fallen foes, and ever his power grew, swift and unrelenting.
    None could stand before the horde but the Doom Slayer. Despair spread before him like a plague, striking fear into the shadow-dwellers, driving them to deeper and darker pits. But from the depths of the abyss rose The Great One, a champion mightier than all who had come before. The Titan, of immeasurable power and ferocity. He strode upon the plain and faced the Doom Slayer, and a mighty battle was fought on the desolate plains. The Titan fought with the fury of the countless that had fallen at the Doom Slayer's hand, but there fell the Titan, and in his defeat the shadow horde were routed.
    And in his terrible rancor between worlds and through time, the Hell Walker found the wretch who shall not be named, but in his heresy was loyal to his evil cause. The wretch adorned the Doom Slayer in a mighty armor, wrought in the forges of Hell, impenetrable and unyielding. With sword and shield of adamantine strength, the Doom Slayer set to banishing all that were left unbroken by his savagery to the void. Yet as the mighty Titan fell and dread engulfed the armies of Doom, the demon priests of the Blood Temples laid a trap to capture this scourge of Hell. Insatiable, even by the vanquishing of the Great One, the Hell Walker sought prey in the tombs of the Blood Keep. And blinded by his fervor, the lure drew him in. The priests brought down the temple upon the Doom Slayer, and in his defeat entombed him in the cursed sarcophagus. The mark of the Doom Slayer was burned upon his crypt, a warning to all of Hell that the terror within must never be freed. There he lies still, and ever more, in silent suffering.

    The game is great to play, but the shotgun stun + SSG combo in its current state absolutely decimates the larger enemies, and kinda makes everything cheeseable. I've managed to beat the entire demo on the new murder machine difficulty in less than 5 minutes. Granted, it's only 3 levels, but the fact I can skip over all but 2 fights in the entire game, and the 2 fights you need to go through take less than a minute each, it almost makes the fights not worth doing
    Other than that, the game feels amazing to play and it has a LOT of potential

  • @adamgroszkiewicz814

    Demo was enough to get me to buy it. Full game is great and 100% gives you bigger fights with more targets...my primary complaint is that its easy to get lost in some areas on the first playthrough. Its not a fun game when you're not engaged in combat...but then again I don't like platforming that much.

    Honestly, everything this guy praises (and whines) about have me interested in the game. I don't care if there's near infinite ammo. I don't care if the AI is somewhat dumb and bumbling. I don't care about nitpicking weapon cooldown exploits. The only thing I might agree on based on the video is the level design allowing one to get lost and turned around at times.
    I loved DOOM Eternal until the Marauder showed up (yeah, I'm one of those guys. Eat me.). The frenetic gameplay was great until he appeared, completely slowing everything down to a crawl. What I'm looking for in these clones is the frenetic gameplay without the enemies that are going to mess that up. I may go back to Eternal one day, but only if I can find a "no marauder" mod. Call me any name you want, I really don't care.
    If you're going to complain that a game basically isn't your holy grail ballwashing title that everyone makes Eternal out to be, then just go play that.

    After playing the EA release, I can solidly say I'm very much not a fan of the way they balanced the game. It's not clear how much damage you'll take and it far too often feels like you get cheap shot instakilled out of no where. This mainly becomes a problem on the last level where you don't even get space to dodge attacks. There's a lot of promise but man they have a ton of qol changes to make before it truly becomes a good game.

    • @underthemayo
      @underthemayo  2 года назад

      Aside from adjusting damage and projectile speed modifiers, what would you suggest? And what difficulty are you running?

    • @Jarekthegamingdragon
      @Jarekthegamingdragon 2 года назад

      @@underthemayo Honestly, changing difficulty modes doesn't really do a whole lot. You can get melted instantly on basically any of the difficulties. The main thing I would change is to make it more obvious that you're taking damage. It's pretty easy to not notice since you won't be staring at your health bar in combat. The other big problem is a lot of the arenas don't really give you much room to move so it makes the issue worse. This is mainly a bigger problem later on in the game. I found the train level straight up unfun for many reasons, that being one of them.

    Glad to see more movement shooter games on the market these days, but I gotta say there is a trend I'm seeing that I don't like. Maybe its just me, but I think that some of the movement games that I'm seeing come out are overdoing it a bit. By that I mean they are perhaps a little TOO fast. Part of why I like movement shooters is the amount of controll you have, but when you make movement too fast you start to lose that control a bit. Things like the dash being way bigger than it has to be, the slide being Uncontrolably fast, or base movment being ridiculously high. You look at Doom eternal and all the controlls are tight and precise, but you look at games like ultrakill and it feels like your playing first person pinball. Maybe it's just a preference thing, but i'd like to see some movement games that bring it back down a notch to a more controllable level. I think Ghost runner did this pretty well. Nice tight movement that felt fast without being unwieldy or disorienting.

    10:48 I don’t like you even mentioning speedrunners as a point to be made. No game developer should consider speedrunners and their wants in the game’s design. It’s a hobby and style of play completely disconnected from the focus of whatever experience the game is trying to give you

    • @MinhLe-cf5nt
      @MinhLe-cf5nt 2 года назад

      I honestly don't get Mayo's point here. I haven't seen speedrunners asking to be able to skip arenas in games at all, they just find a way to deal with those quickly (glitchless) or glitch through those if they can.
      Also, there are literally games built around speedrunning. Additionally, some simple QoLs like quick respawn or skip cutscene would help speedrunners while keeping the core experience intact so it'd be nice if game devs can keep those in mind.
