Yeah no, she doesn’t feel like a daughter of Lydia deetz, at all. Terrible casting, she was only cast because she’s the “It girl” in everything now. They should have gone with a no name actress
The film felt like it had 3 writers with 3 different ideas that they tried to merge, the soul sucker thing is pointless and doesnt do enough to payoff as the main villain and distracted from the guy trying to trick Jenna Ortega and then whole father dying and snake stuff
An interview with Michael keaton I watched had him say “I told Tim the only way I’ll do it is if I’m only in the movie about the same as the first”. So much respect for that Edit: in the same interview he also told Tim he wants little to no cgi
I just got back from theaters and I loved it. The only criticisms I have is that beetlejuice isn’t really the villain until the ending scene, also the pacing wasn’t really good. It dwelled in some storylines too long and others two short. Would still recommend, a worthy sequel.
I was already excited to see this, but after hearing your review, I just went and bought tickets to my local-ish theater to see it on the premiere! Cant wait!!
I've always loved Beetlejuice and would always secretly watch this movie since my parents wouldn't let me see it. It's always been one of my favorites and I remember finding merch on the film wasn't easy, now it's so easy and everyone loves the film. It's great and I'm very excited to see it this weekend.
The ending sucks. The villain gets totally stripped of being a threat at all. It was the equivalent of it 2 where pennywise gets cyberbullied to death.
As a 90s girl who grew up watching beetlejuice for 25 years, I loved and really appreciate how much beetlejuice was appearing in this movie I loved that! And I loved the touch of modernness of this era(cellphones, tesla etc), but I needed more story, more in dept of these characters, like the boyfriend, I thought his story was as very interesting but I feel like I blinked and the movie was over. They have to give these classic movies more respect, and give them 2 hours they deserve. I enjoyed this 1 hour movie a lot, but it makes me sad that I was left wanting to see more. This one didn't live up to the first one. Still enjoyable
I'm a massive Beetlejuice fan, but weirdly what I'm more waiting for is the soundtrack for this movie to come out. The original has been my favourite Elfman score for a long time
@@no_mnom According to the news, he did. The score hasn't come out yet, so no one can know for sure yet. One of the few scores where I'm literally checking daily
As a bit music nerd myself and a Danny Elfman fan (get this recent record if you haven't already - so creative) This one has his elf-isms but it's more subdued. You kind of forget about it actually cause the other song uses take center stage (for good reason - you'll see) so there's that. Not a ton of noticeable "score" work.
@@beefsupreme46n2 While I'm sure it was for a decent reason, this was actually a source of disappointment on my end. What I found on all platforms was only 2 Elfman songs after waiting since the trailer. I loved the songs, but it made my jaw drop. I'm not angry or anything, we're not entitled to more work from anyone, but that's what I come to Beetlejuice for, almost more than the actual story
I saw the original in theaters when I was in HS and loved it. It holds a special place in my heart. I went and saw the sequel yesterday, on opening day, with low expectations. It was slow for the first 20 or 30 minutes, but after that everything fell into place and I truly enjoyed it. Kudos to Michael Keaton, he may not have played the part in decades but you would never think it. He was fantastic.
I was raised very similarly to you, Chris, (very religious) and not allowed to see movies like Beetlejuice as a kid. So i dont have nostalgia for it either. But my husband does! And I am looking forward to watching it for the first time with my 11 yr old, and then watching the sequel together as a family. Doing the same thing with reading and viewing the Harry Potter series. Experiencing it for the first time through the eyes of my child is almost as good, if not better than having my own childhood nostalgia. 💜
Yeah, I don't agree that folks like the first one better because they saw it when they were kids. The first one was straight-up a better film and a better story.
i totally disagree with you, the thing is everything must be judged based on its own merits, the review should not by bias by neither nostalgia nor modern polish, heres several examples: - best jurassic park movie: def number 1, it just is - best 2d Mario: def Mario wonder, this is a very controversial one, for me personally it was Super Mario World for more than 30 years, but wonder is better, sorry - best COD campaign: IMO BO 6, LOL but not by a longshot - Metallica's best Album: IMO Master of puppets (or Justice for All its arguable) - Best Resident evil game: RE 2 REMAKE (yes, the remake) yes a long comes down to personal taste, my problem is when that personal taste is influenced by BIAS, and in the worst cases (like yours) when they havent even tried all of them Now that ive seen beetlejuice 2 once and 1 like a million times, i enjoyed both just as much
@@andresgonzalez887 The sequel had WAY too many plotlines, and solved them all in extremely fast and convenient ways. They could have made 1 good movie, 2 mediocre movies, and 1 terrible movie with everything they had going on. The wedding/dance number at the end was completely anticlimactic and unnecessary. The whole Soul Train thing came across like a transparent attempt to put POC into the film because of past criticisms involving Burton's casting choices. There were a lot of poor choices in this film and that's not bias, that's fact.
I grew up as a kid with the original movie when it first came out, and this new one has me SUPER pumped!! I can tell just from the trailers it won’t disappoint. Cannot WAIT!!
I think that's because we've become used to oversaturated trailers that basically spell movies out for you. I don't know your age, so I don't know if you remember when trailers were cryptic and didn't give much away, but it was definitely a better time. We haven't had sparse trailers, like this one, in a long time. The downside being that, you now run a risk of them not hooking people, because they're giving so little away. Go see it, I have no doubt you'll love it ☺️👍
As someone who has seen the original at least 5 or 6 times growing up & def love it. This sequel brought me nothing but laughs & amazing energy! I think it is every bit as fun as the first one while exploring a bigger world as you said. Great movie & just makes me happy for Burton, Keaton, Ryder, & O’Hara & all involved. Really cool thing to see ☺️
Good review. I agree. One of my biggest likes was the costumes, the stop motion, and the real life props. I enjoyed seeing some of the original cast that returned. Ortega has found her home in horror and spooky films. Great edition in the franchise imo. Plot wasn't big but still fun. Glad to eventually add another classic to Halloween watches.
I remember the first time watching Beetlejuice, I had just come home from trick-or-treating on Halloween and it came on the channel. I couldn't tell you how old I was, though.
My first thought as the credits rolled was: "I waited 36 years for THAT?" Between positive response I was seeing from the general public online and how Michael Keaton raved about it, I was unprepared for how little it met my expectations. Many new characters, none of them fleshed out in the slightest. They were trying to fit in a million things, but didn't devote any time to any of it. I didn't think the ex-wife character or the Willem Dafoe character were really needed. I would've liked to see more meat around the story of Astrid's fake boyfriend and Astrid's father in the afterlife. And I was waiting for one single mention of Otho that never came. Glenn Shadix is a legend and too big a part of the first film to not have been mentioned once. (It would've been great to mention Otho as still alive somewhere, because Shadix actually died in 2010...but Otho just wants nothing to do with the paranormal anymore, lol). And why not a Dick Cavett cameo? He's still kicking. Even would've been fitting for Delia to talk with him at the end of the film, if you know what I mean (not to give anything away). Loved Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara though. Excellent evolution of the two female characters and Keaton picked up right where he left off.
While I feel you're being too harsh towards the movie, I agree with you that the movie could have done more with Astrid's "Love interest," Jeremy, SPOILERS! particularly showing/ explaining why he killed his parents.
Similar to My thoughts. It seemed to have everything but a strong core plot to drive it forward, leaving the movie lacking heft or stakes. It seemed to spend a lot of time meandering about before any of the threads really kicked in and then what had been a bit of a slow film seemed to be ending very suddenly. The plot about Astrid's boyfriend should probably have been the central story; it had stakes and emotional weight. I loved Willem Defoe's character (he really gives the role his all), but he had so little of consequence to do; ditto Monica Bellucci. If they had tightened up the story, jettisoned bloat like The Soul Train and Charles Deetz's bizarre and repeated appearances, they would have had a really good movie on their hands. As it is I think its riding on the back of nostalgia, Keaton's flawless performance as the titular ghoul and the spooky season mood it ladles on in lashings. I mean what more could you ask for in a film opening the Autumn season, but an upstate New England small town in the Fall setting, filled with Autumnal sun shafting through golden leaves and pumpkins aplenty? Even with the fundamental story telling problems, its very hard to hate the thing.
@@Adamguy2003 Did you grow up with the first run of Beetlejuice? I did. I remember when it was new and everyone was talking about it. It's my favorite movie of all-time. This doesn't cut the mustard.
@@mrbeast85 I thought it was the lamest ending. Stark contrast to the first film, which is one of the BEST endings of all-time. It was more of a musical than a comedy. A little influence from the Broadway show, maybe? The first film had so many great quotable moments and one-liners, from a few different characters. I don't hate it. Keaton, O'Hara, and Ryder prevent me from hating it. But I'm very disappointed. Constant mention of Charles was in poor taste, honestly. We all know why the actor isn't in it. As for the great love of it, I don't think standards are what they used to be. It's also kind of missing a down-to-earth everyday character that sort of fills that void left by Barbara and Adam.
Thank you for your comments, I see everyone else is praising it and it just feels like very superficial praise. It's sad the sequel is once again a disappointment from Hollywood
this movie was a solid 8 for me, mainly because of how low my expectations were. I had a blast watching it and the scoring was a 10/10. DO NOT miss it at cinemas!
Now just for a film adaptation of the musical, which if you didn’t catch on broadway was just fantastic. Really captures the spirit of the original (pun intended)
For all those that gave this movie good reviews what movie were you watching I found Beetlejuice very disappointing especially having to wait 36 years for it to come out. I really felt they had a long list of all the things they had to include in the movie they totally forgot to make any sense on how the movie was going to be written I can somewhat under why Jeffrey Jones wasn’t in the movie but that animation that they had on to explain his non appearance was was really stupid. I love it when Geena Davis said she didn’t appear cause Ghosts don’t age If that’s true why did Micheal Keaton who played Beetlejuice aged big time. LOL
I’ve seen both movies and I love it how Chris attributes bad reviews to juvenile nostalgia. Thanks for the gaslighting. I loved the original, but my opinion of this sequel has nothing to do with my fond memories. This movie is a mediocre cash grab. Full stop.
Imagine if, instead trying to force Lydia to be exactly the same, she grew out of her goth phase and had to deal with her daughter being like her when she was a kid and now seeing it from the other side. You know... actual character growth instead of trying to rehash her as an aging goth girl.
Movie is just ok, first one blows it outta the water, and not just because of nostalgia, but just the plot overall, first one was so charming, this one didn’t have the same charm … It’s worth a watch, but that’s where it ends for me personally.. The first one I can watch over and over…
I’m happy this is the first review I’ve watched for this movie because Chris’s stance on people’s perceptions of legacy sequels relative to their age and love of the original was refreshing and something I agree with
As a life long fan with a Sandworm tattoo, I was highly satisfied with this sequel and I am so happy Tim Burton has returned to more practical effects and stop motion
Nowadays if Chris posts a review of a film it means he likes it. The suspense & the tingly feeling I used to get while receiving a notification from this channel is no more there.
Same! I miss the old Chris , I watch his older stuff , it's a lot better , at least his reviews we're fun , his new approach to film lost it's sincerity
I find myself really relating to Chris on this one. I've seen Beetlejuice once, in my 20's, and plan on rewatching it before seeing Beetlejuice 2. I thought the first was a decent film, but I don't have that nostalgic love for it like most people. Hopefully I like it, I do like most of the cast and Tim Burton of course. Thanks for the oddly relatable review!
I was skeptical because Beetlejuice is my favorite movie, but I love how Lydia’s daughter discovers the truth about the afterlife. I just felt it was so well done❤
Excited to watch this! One thing I’ll never understand is when people say “no one asked for this”. Technically nobody asks for any type of movie to be made or at least for the most part. That’s the fun of seeing things pan out as they do with film. If you say no one asked for this then don’t go see it, just like I do for a lot of movies.
Yeah, but that's not actually the case with this one. Fans have been consistently asking for a sequel for 30+ years, and it's been in development hell, with multiple scripts, for almost that entire time - especially when Keaton refused to reprise the role without Burton when the studio tried to move forward without Burton, but weren't going to do it without Keaton. This sequel was _very much_ asked for, by millions of fans.
Awesome review, with no spoilers. Perfect. Already excited to see this as I saw the original in the theatre when first released (gawd I'm old) and totally get what you're saying. Still, when all the original cast were very reluctant to do this for decades because they didn't want to mess with the love it had, then come back afterwards and truly love the sequel, we know it's going to be something special.
I didn't know this movie is helmed by Tim Burton until 2 mins back. I am already in. I am a big fan of his work since "Sleepy Hollow", one of my favorite horror movies of all time.
Last weekend I watched Beetlejuice with my 10 year old daughter. Today I watched Beetlejuice Beetlejuice with her. Right after the movie, and without any prompting, she said "The first one was better." All I could say is "Yeah, it was." 🙁
Anyone else see that hilarious meme suggesting comedian Pete Davison is what beetlejuice looked like when he was alive? the Pic they chose of Pete Davison side by side with micheal keaton's beetlejuice photo is a spot on depiction of a 'before death' beetlejuice!🤣
We really enjoyed it, especially how it wasn't a retread and expanded everything. Our only negative was it lacked real tension in the end, that a couple of the antagonists wrapped up too quickly.
Is it worth seeing it in imax, especially with other movies like Joker and other big-screen needed movies or better to wait to watch beetlejuice at home?
I haven’t seen Beetlejuice Beetlejuice yet but with the first Beetlejuice I went to see twice in the theaters. I’m glad they kept practical effects along with the familiar atmosphere from the first. It holds a special place in my ❤️.
You're dead wrong Chris. I *am* that millennial goth boy who grew up on Beetlejuice and Tim Burton movies and - straight up - I thought this was a better film than the original. You could really see how Burton has grown and matured as an artist. LOVED the three female leads. Will probably go see it again. Great review.

Beetlejuice(1988) was an homage to Throne Smith's work. A house haunted by the living.
The film felt like it had 3 writers with 3 different ideas that they tried to merge, the soul sucker thing is pointless and doesnt do enough to payoff as the main villain and distracted from the guy trying to trick Jenna Ortega and then whole father dying and snake stuff
Yes, WAY too many plot lines and stuff going on.
I can't wait till they release the third installment , Beetlejuice , Beetlejuice , Beetlejuice.
An interview with Michael keaton I watched had him say “I told Tim the only way I’ll do it is if I’m only in the movie about the same as the first”. So much respect for that
Edit: in the same interview he also told Tim he wants little to no cgi
That’s very nice.
Ironic, since there was quite a bit of cgi in the movie.

There's much more Beetlejuice here and plenty of CGI. Don't fall for marketing gimmicks.

I just got back from theaters and I loved it. The only criticisms I have is that beetlejuice isn’t really the villain until the ending scene, also the pacing wasn’t really good. It dwelled in some storylines too long and others two short. Would still recommend, a worthy sequel.
I guess working on Wednesday awakened something within Burton. Ortega too for that matter. The Juice is loose!
Also the writers of this are staffed right out of the Wednesday writers room.

I was already excited to see this, but after hearing your review, I just went and bought tickets to my local-ish theater to see it on the premiere! Cant wait!!
Beetlejuice 2 was an absolute hit. Cinematography was amazing! Such a great movie. Seen it with my 13 year old son.
I wasn't sure if I was going to see this in theaters or wait until streaming 🤔. You may have swayed me to the former. Thanks, Chris.
From what i saw this movie is on a good path to be better than Joker second movie xD
I've always loved Beetlejuice and would always secretly watch this movie since my parents wouldn't let me see it. It's always been one of my favorites and I remember finding merch on the film wasn't easy, now it's so easy and everyone loves the film. It's great and I'm very excited to see it this weekend.
I am so happy to hear praise, I was worried. Now I shall go enjoy without the impending dread in the air!
The ending sucks. The villain gets totally stripped of being a threat at all. It was the equivalent of it 2 where pennywise gets cyberbullied to death.
I mean the chase and it lead to that ending.
As someone that grew up watching the original Beetlejuice on vhs, i cant wait to see this movie. Ive been waiting for this sequel for over ten years.
YOURE THE BEST, i haven’t even started the video but you have the best reviews, i’ve come back for years for good reviews, you are the best.

I'm a massive Beetlejuice fan, but weirdly what I'm more waiting for is the soundtrack for this movie to come out. The original has been my favourite Elfman score for a long time
Elfman is great, I didn't look but did he do the sequel?
@@no_mnom According to the news, he did. The score hasn't come out yet, so no one can know for sure yet. One of the few scores where I'm literally checking daily
@@no_mnomyeah he did
As a bit music nerd myself and a Danny Elfman fan (get this recent record if you haven't already - so creative) This one has his elf-isms but it's more subdued.
I'm so excited! I was so worried that this movie was gonna suck, but now I'm more hyped than ever!
I don’t think that’s why people like the originals better. I think most of them are just honestly better movies.
Yeah, I don't agree that folks like the first one better because they saw it when they were kids. The first one was straight-up a better film and a better story.
i totally disagree with you, the thing is everything must be judged based on its own merits, the review should not by bias by neither nostalgia nor modern polish, heres several examples:
- best jurassic park movie: def number 1, it just is
- best 2d Mario: def Mario wonder, this is a very controversial one, for me personally it was Super Mario World for more than 30 years, but wonder is better, sorry
- best COD campaign: IMO BO 6, LOL but not by a longshot
- Metallica's best Album: IMO Master of puppets (or Justice for All its arguable)
- Best Resident evil game: RE 2 REMAKE (yes, the remake)
yes a long comes down to personal taste, my problem is when that personal taste is influenced by BIAS, and in the worst cases (like yours) when they havent even tried all of them
Now that ive seen beetlejuice 2 once and 1 like a million times, i enjoyed both just as much
@@andresgonzalez887 The sequel had WAY too many plotlines, and solved them all in extremely fast and convenient ways.
I’ve watched this film twice in 18 hours. As a fan of film I can honestly say after 3 decades it was glorious! RIP Bob.
I grew up as a kid with the original movie when it first came out, and this new one has me SUPER pumped!! I can tell just from the trailers it won’t disappoint. Cannot WAIT!!
Michael Keaton is a legend. Was glad to see him back as Bettlejuice .
2:08 oh thank god because as a fan the trailers did nothing for me 😂
I think that's because we've become used to oversaturated trailers that basically spell movies out for you.
Really cool thing to see ☺️
Jenna ortega should be cast as raven in the dcu.
Chris im so excited for another one of your halloween specials this year, theyve become some of my favorite parts of the holiday

For all those that gave this movie good reviews what movie were you watching I found Beetlejuice very disappointing especially having to wait 36 years for it to come out.

We really enjoyed it, especially how it wasn't a retread and expanded everything. Our only negative was it lacked real tension in the end, that a couple of the antagonists wrapped up too quickly.

Making CGI look like stop motion is like making a PS5 game look like an Atari game. We're living in a weird nostalgic movie era for sure.
Nah, It's nothing like that, making CGI look like stop motion requires very, very realistic rendering, but choppy movements, see The Lego Movie.
