If you may excuse me, I'll be groaning at the "it's Showtime!" joke for the next 2 hours and will be back to watch the review later.
That’s the beauty of Dan. He’ll be right here when you’re ready for his genius.
I feel like he’s been holding that one in since 1988.
Hilarious 😂
It took me 5 minutes to understand the joke 😂
🥴😵💫🤢🤮
People forget that Betelgeuse had absolutely nothing to do with the Day-O scene. That was all Adam Maitland's doing!
This has been bugging me since the first trailer. It makes absolutely no sense that that choir would be singing that song. It was established early in the first film that Adam was a fan of Harry Belafonte and thus why his music was used for the dinner scene and the very end of the movie. The only reason to use the music in the sequel is for member berries.
@@the7percentsolutionthat feels like the strategy for everything regarding the marketing for this movie
@@the7percentsolution Good Point! Although Delia and Charles were intimately involved in that incident, and it was sort of hinted at at the end of the movie that maybe they became fond of the Maitlands' taste in music after they'd gotten to know them.
Yeah, the Maitlands liked Harry Belafonte. But Charles seem to dig it at the end if I remember correctly
People complaining about the day-o song are really reaching here. The Maitlands and the Deitz’s were set to be living together for years at the end of the first film. I don’t think it’s too difficult to imagine that Adam’s musical taste rubbed off on them.
watched it today, I feel like there's too many plotlines without any satisfying payoff.
It was too messy! Jenna Ortega romance part has the best plot.
I felt that this was genuinely one of the worst movies I've ever seen, an absolute disaster of plot juggling and poor acting. Even Michael Keaton and Catherine O'Hara couldn't save this piece of shit.
I had fun with parts of it. But the ending is where it completely fell apart for me. That musical number was so bad and didn’t fit the movie at all.
@@joshuabaddeley3987 yup. After waited for 36 years.
The confusing payoff was such a bummer because the movie had cool ideas and great visuals before that. My daughter's favorite character was the soul sucker, and she her story just pettered out.
I thought the writing on Wednesday was all over the place with no consistent tone or point of view, and the series mainly worked because of Ortega and the love for that character. I wouldn't have picked them to write this script.
Correct. Wednesday is an overrated mess with storylines that don't make any sense and have absolutely nothing to do the Addams Family culture. It's a weak, unoriginal copy and paste of Harry Potter seemingly written by film school drop outs.
The romance subplot between Astrid and Jeremy is the same romance plot as Wednesday. Both romantic interests turn out to be “unsavory characters”.
I watched Beetlejuice a lot as a kid, no one in my family thought it was bad for us kids. We had fun watching it.
I was actually really surprised with how many times this movie made me genuinely laugh. Catherine O'Hara and Keaton, of course, are especially hilarious. Oh and ...my god, Wynonna Ryder is still fine as hell.
Catherine O’Hara is a national treasure
"Must we go tropical" ... what a nice reference from An Evening w/ Kevin Smith
Aaaaaah, I knew I knew that reference from somewhere. Thx.
Not "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian?"
Good catch! I watched that DVD throughout college and it's part of the legendary Superman story, so it's basically tattooed on my brain.
@@DanMurrellMovies And then suddenly a big F'ing Spider shows up.
Michael Keaton is the only actor who could've played both Batman and the Joker. Shame he didn't get an opportunity to play Joker.
Troy Baker has voice acted both.
Did heath ledger get some inspiration from Beetlejuice for his joker
since there's a new Batman movie, remake, reboot, whatever every two years or so, Keaton still has plenty of time to play a Joker.
Catherine O'hara makes anything better. The first 2-3 seasons of Schitt's Creek are solely pulled off by E. Levy and her (specially her) and their amazing talent.
I love her in that series so much. It's a bummer, and yet also appropriate, that she is the only character that never really changes the whole run.
She's always so effortlessly wonderful. Highly recommend Best In Show if you haven't seen it!!
@@CrappyCar she made some attempts to be with her children and hang out with the locals, so there’s that.
@@mhawang8204 There were positive steps for sure, you could see some cracks in her armor.
My theater was cracking up at every scene she was in
“It’s Showtime!” Tee hee …
Catherine O'Hara had me laugh out loud multiple times 😆
The soul sucker plot could have been completely left out of the film.
She was a great character but underused. I'd much rather throw away Rory and expanded soul sucker role and Astrid romance which seems rushed.
Thank you for this review Dan. The Showtime joke was gold. I do plan to see this but not this weekend. I use to love seeing a movie with a large crowd but lately they make me anxious. I'm not sure what that's about.
Getting older haha. I used to love large groups of people and crowds. Now I go to baseball games and hate the crowds. Go to the movies to save money and also so it's mostly and empty theater lol
Covid.
I get my seats online. Go to a matinee on the weekend, pick an aisle seat, and luxury recline seating. More room, space.
Even with all of the confidence I had in Michael Keaton, I was nervous he wouldn't be able to fall back into that role so easily, but he knocked it out of the park once again. Grew up on the original so I had to watch this one with my parents as well. We all enjoyed it.
2:15 "Beetlejuice squared" 😆
Dan the trusted source of movies
That joke at the beginning is only something Dan could do!
4:05 - This is good to hear I really think Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny would have been much better (and had a lower budget) if they had gone back to using pratical sets and models, old school VFX like the original trilogy.
They gotta keep working that deaging/deepfake tech so they can have Indiana Jones 6 after Harrison Ford dies.
That and make it a much lighter movie akin to Last Crusade. I’m guessing they didn’t hire Mangold because he made an awesome movie sequel (aka Logan); they wanted him to do an Indy movie like Logan, which was a really bad creative decision, and that cost the franchise big time.
Seems like almost no one in Hollywood can write a decent story these days!
Debatable, but even still, this movie was great lol
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice suffers from the same problem as Ghostbusters Frozen Empire. It's overstuffed with too many subplots. Consequently the film has a lack of focus and doesn't allow the time and space that any one subplot needs in order to breath or be fully explored. There are just too many unnecessary things packed into the suitcase. I don't know why film makers can't just keep it simple. I think simplicity and simple storytelling is undervalued and underappreciated these days. Some of the best films ever made are very simple stories.
I agree, it's hard to not want to like this movie but the whole soul train and other musical moments ruined it. Only good part is Beetlejuice himself, but they sanitized him some
It was weird the way Winona Ryder made the same confused stink face expression the whole time 😢
So the script is a mess but the cast & visuals are good? Tim Burton is back baby!
I was 10 when the first movie came out and probably saw it in the theater a dozen times. So weird thinking about how others were denied that because of overly restrictive parents. Makes me really happy that my parents knew I could handle just about anything, even at age 10.
I had a blast with this movie and I thought his wife not being a huge deal was hilarious! I took it as intentional.
“Must we go tropical?” Top work!
This is one of those movies that my family wants to see and will see this weekend all together no matter the issues
The one other subplot of the movie that got wrapped up way too quick would've made for an amazing solo movie. It was genuinely creepy and darker than than any of the other subplots
Michael Keaton is an Icon. Of course I'll be going and enjoying him once more.
I love this movie, it’s probably my second favorite movie of the year right behind inside out. I think that it compliments the first movie very well and has a very similar pacing and structure to it without being a complete rehash of the original. If I had one complaint, I think that one or two of the plot threads had a bit of a rushed resolution. If the movie may be 15 to 20 minutes longer, maybe those could’ve been wrapped up in more satisfying ways or they could’ve opted to admit them from the movie entirely. But otherwise it was a fun time
It was a letdown to me sadly (spoilers). Visually it did well at capturing classic Tim Burton and the performances were great especially Michael Keaton, but I didn't think the story met it's full potential. I agree the payoff was lacking big time and I walked away feeling unsatisfied. The story had a lot of great things going for it in the first half and there was a lot of setup but it fell so flat in the end. I felt as though they were hinting at Richard still being alive because Lydia couldn't contact his spirit and Astrid said they never found his body. I was hoping he would be revealed to still be alive and that would be why Lydia couldn't end up marrying Beetlejuice because she's actually not a widow. I wish they would've had Jeremy more involved in the second half of the story, I don't like how quickly he was dropped and never seen again when he started as a huge part of driving the story. And I was greatly disappointed with the Delores subplot, she spends the whole movie searching for Beetlejuice and I'm thinking there's going to be a huge confrontation between them in the end but within a minute of her finding him she's eaten by the sand worm. I was hoping for a final battle similar to Barnabas vs Angelique in Dark Shadows, or that she would try to suck out Lydia's soul to have her out of the way. But everything was resolved so easily it felt cheap, there were some great moments here and there but as a whole the movie felt like all style and not enough substance. And I wasn't a fan of the very last scene being a WTF dream sequence. I usually love Tim Burton's movies, even the more heavily criticized ones but I think this is truly one of his weaker films. And I was missing Adam and Barbara although it's understandable why they couldn't be in it. I wish we could've had one scene of Barbara communicating telepathically with Lydia so she could've had some presence in the movie even if we couldn't see her
I agree with all your points! The ending was so lame and disappointing
I saw it today. I want my two hours back 😭
I saw it on opening night. I waited until the following Monday to watch Dan’s review, because I had a feeling it would be what it is. As usual, Dan is the perfect movie critic, at least for me.
Lydia is now Darlene from The Conners. Lost all her edge.
i am excited because it's hard to imagine that this cast won't bring something good to the table, even if it makes no sense
Hope you’re are feeling better Dan, we are all happy you are still making content but we can wait and your personal health is more important!
Dan looking distinguished with that grey coming in on the chin, I'm right there with ya! Can't wait to watch this, for better or worse XD
I really felt this deserves two ratings: it’s good and not a fan. The good was so good, but the bad really tanked. Jeremy and Delores were main plot points that were all but thrown away. Some jokes and sequences went on way too long, like the wedding scene. Some characters were overused, like Lydia’s manager and Willem Defoe. But Catherine O’Hara and Michael Keaton were great. I feel like this movie was a victim of studio editing, trying to cut it down to increase showtimes. I would be interested in a directors cut.
Another like for the opening gag. Keep killing it Dan!
yep, you could take the ex-wife and the actor/cop out entirely and nothing changes. except it would have been shorter,
I was there in 1988 for the first one, and I totally agree with your assessment.
I was thinking why i didn't like the movie and than i realized what you mentioned was a big downer to me. The payoff was not worth for the story building up to that point. Monica Belluci part was there for no reason while the potential was huge about that. Bunch of characters for no significance on the story. This movie was just average for me.
If nothing else, nice to know Burton has found his creative chops again by going back to getting a stronger sense of practicality in the effects again as opposed to so much of the CGI and Greenscreens he got preoccupied with in many of his later live action ventures in the 10s.
Catherine O’hara was hilarious in BB. But Michael Keaton was over the top brilliant. The cast really make this movie great. And of course Tim Burton practical approach. They even make CGI feel like practical effects. That was brilliant idea.
Saw it last night, very fair assessment of the movie
Good to know after all these years, Burton still can't tell a cogent story.
Ok, that genuinely made me laugh
@@notmyrealpseudonym6702 👍
I know Justin Theroux’s character was intentionally unbearable, but I really hated every joke he had.
Agreed
Yeah his character was by far the worst written.
I agree with you. I enjoyed it enough but the ending felt like 4 plot lines rushed to a conclusion and that climactic dance scene around the cake was a major letdown mainly due to a baffling song choice. Cast was great though and I loved that it was set on Halloween.
Once I saw a whole room full of shrunken head guys, I was a little weary. It was just a throwaway gag in the original that got paid off in the end. Why was it expanded? Dan, I'm going to trust your judgement and keep my expectations in check.
It was entertaining. It wasn't boring.
We watched it today. We throughly enjoyed it, especially the last 45 minutes.
It was all over the place at times but this the type of movie where that doesn’t really matter.
7:28 you don't tell me what to do, sir. *eating Mando*
this felt more like a made for streaming sequel
I don’t think the first beetlejuice has a particularly good story either
Careful... 😂
I usually auto-click the like at the beginning of each video, but I un-clicked it after that opening joke.
I kid I kid... commenting to boost engagement :)
I’ll eventually see this, but I was concerned from day one that, like many, just too much time has passed. Tim Burton is just not the guy that made the original. Top Gun: Maverick was the exception, not the rule.
But Maverick wasn't made by the same guy who directed the first (passing away and all.). In fact, I'd argue Maverick was quite different in vibes to the original film since that was more a school drama as opposed to the sequel putting more emphasis on the mission coming and for them to be prepared.
Cobra Kai is another late sequel that works. Blade Runner 2049 too. But you’re right, it is still the exception rather than the rule.
@@totesmagotes213 yeah those benefit from really good writing. Especially Cobra Kai.
@the7percentsolution cobra kai and good writing in the same sentence has to be satire
I fully agree that this film is way too messy. Way too many plotlines and none of them have a satisfying payoff, plus the ending felt very anticlimactic. Also, it just wasn't that funny, at least for me. You can tell everyone's having a lot of fun, and there are some enjoyable moments, but it doesn't coalesce together.
I agree there are two subplots and the one with the Deetz's family is what more or less delivers. I dont know if I would agree about Winona, after all she is kind of the protagonist here. Her relationship with Delia, Astrid and Beetlejuice is the one aspect that is kinda cohesive in the film. Even though I dont dislike the idea about an Afterlife Film Noir story with Monica Belluci as a femme fatale and Willem Dafoe as a cop their characters just dont have room in the story. They should have elminated them completely or given the same actors other roles that were more related to the main conflict. Beetlejuice himself did have a place since he is needed to help Lydia and it was kinda ironic and funny that even this disgusting character was more honest than Lydia's new boyfriend. I wasnt too crazy about Beetlejuice's jokes, though. It was a strange combination of being tamer in his language and behaviour but more grotesque and gorey in other aspects to kind of compensate for that. To me Catherine O'Hara was the funniest character in the movie and probably the one who felt more faithful to her original self. I even kind of liked how they managed Charles Deetz, being kinda cruel to the actor , who kind of deserves it, but not too cruel to the character, who was a bumbling simpleton but kind of a well intentioned guy in the original.
Just saw the movie today and completely agree with your assessment. They definitely tried to fit too much into a short movie. The ending was really abrupt. I do also agree that it was awesome to see the original cast back together!
The opening Dad joke was *chef's kiss* Ignore those who are groaning over it.
Kinda glad to hear the title character is a big part of the movie. Micheal Keaton is such a fun actor when he is allowed to be weird. He needs another Oscar vehicle, stat! The man should have been given his flowers ages ago.
Middle movie of a trilogy issues, perhaps?
I mean come on, as if they aren't going to try to make Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Only if they don't want to make money, money, money.
My biggest gripe is a golden missed opportunity that I cannot divulge because of SPOILERS. I'll have to keep it to myself. But a one word hint: Tree.
Great review! I love seeing these characters and I really hope there’s a possibility of a third film that might focus on a main storyline and not feel like a need to cram in multiple ones in the span of 2 hours.
I found the pacing pretty off. It took like 45 minutes for anything to happen, really. And the entire movie didn't really add that much to this franchise. At the end, it was pretty entertaining but felt unnecessary.
To be honest , after seeing how WBD had a very rough summer compared to last year's summer barbie and meg 2 the trench , this Beetlejuice 2 better be financial hit for them at box office
I didn't hate it but I thought there was still too much Charles, considering why they killed off the character. The "soul train" reference was just cringey.
Delia Deetz was the best part about this movie. I could watch a whole movie with Catherine O'Hara as Delia.
I grew up with beetlejuice and the cartoon my whole life! I’m so excited. ❤
Thanks Dan! I'll likely wait for this to stream. Summer's over, I'm all "blockbuster" franchised-out, I'm ready for the fall/winter movie season-the good stuff!
MANDO: Its got what armpits crave!
It wasn't funny at all. The script was cringy as fuck. Completely bewildered by all the good reviews its getting.
I appreciate the Evening With Kevin Smith reference
Sorry to mention it, it's irrelevant, but is Dan is mispronouncing "Winona" every time?
I refunded my tickets and decided I will wait till it’s on one of the many streaming services I subscribe too. It just looks too bad to waste hard earned money on.
2:15 "Beetlejuice squared" is not "beetlejuice beetlejuice". Instead, it's more like "a beetlejuice number of beetlejuice".
This is maybe the most internet comment ever.
@@DanMurrellMovies I would say that "I hate being that guy"... But I enjoy pointing this kind of thing out. 🫣
Arguably it’s the same because for example in algebra ab is the same as a*b so doesn’t that make Beetlejuice Beetlejuice the same as Beetlejuice * Beetlejuice? Also your timecode is incorrect, unless he edited the video in the last 4 hours? He says Beetlejuice squared at 2:14.
I love this.
@@closeben I got the time code wrong! Beetlejuice squared is closer to (a)^b using your example. So it's more like "a*a*a...*a" a "b" number of times.
In this context, (Beetlejuice)^2 could be "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" only if "Beetlejuice = 2". However, "Beetlejuice squared" would still not be "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" because if "Beetlejuice=2", then "Beetlejuice squared" would be "(2)^2" or "4".
@@nelsonmd4232 It seems like you're the one who's misunderstanding. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice should be read as Beetlejuice times Beetlejuice because multiplication is assumed when no symbol is given between two terms. So it follows that Beetlejuice^2 would be equivalent to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
I always thought that Beetlejuice is more like Jack Sparrow. Also, I am not sure if I am going out to see the second one because I watched the first movie and I was honestly bored except for all of the Beetlejuice and scenes in "The Afterlife"
As someone who was lucky enough to watch the movie just a day back and that too in a theatre, I would like to stay with that feeling rather and skip watching this one.
I agree. I came out of the movie thinking it should have dropped the ex-wife subplot and focus more on the Deetz family.
Watching the Wednesday night preview tonight!
Watched it last night enjoyed it but if definitely is not without it's issues way too much going on while at the same time long stretches with absolutely nothing happening film needed to be kept simpler but Keaton and o hara definitely saved it
The musical element was not pleasing 😅 but I loved the questions that were answered!❤
Catherine O'Hara saved the movie for me. She shines and elevates every scene she's in. Winona, unfortunately, is saddled with a poor script and just plays Joyce again, instead of Lydia. Justin Theroux just brings down every project he's in, he's very mediocre, always acting like the bumbling bad guy from a kids movie. And the MacArthur Park scene makes no sense, in a bad way. Poor song choice, failed attempt at being iconic like Day-O. It just felt forced. And with a Wednesday dance in the middle. Overall, it's fine, but it could've been much better.
One of the worst song choices I can ever remember.
People seem to be having fun with this movie.... but I thought it was awful
I liked but did not love the movie. There were a lot of gross out moments for no reason. I feel like Burton had 3 stories to tell and couldn't commit to seeing one to its conclusion...resulting in just leaving everything in it. I'm disappointed there were no post credit scenes. Lydia was reduced to a shell of her former self. Keaton, Ortega, and O'Hara shine though.
I dont think i ever saw the first one and i used to watch a load of vhs dvds or and go to the moves regularly
I smiled once. The writing was lame. I felt like a few actors were phoning it in. Beetlejuice is one of my favorite movies of all time and I feel like this movie drags it down. The plot was all over the place and it was too much remember this. And for the most part, I was bored through the whole movie. The look of the movie went too far. The first was perfect with everything they did with the afterlife but this has to do so much more that it becomes ugly. But the biggest problem was it was boring. I wanted to walk out. Another movie proving Tim Burton has lost his fast ball.
That *"It's Showtime!"* joke was STELLAR!!! I laughed way too hard at that.
I'm a GenXer, so I've loved Beetlejuice for decades. I was considering going to see it this weekend, but am not sure. Definitely want to see it on the big screen no matter the plot or lack thereof. I tend to trust Michael Keaton; he doesn't do crappy, worthless movies like others who just want a paycheck, so I think it will have my initial support.
I saw it on opening day. It was hilarious! I loved it ❤❤
I did grow up with the original. Beetlejuice is my favorite movie. I'm not going to be able to catch it until it hits streaming but I am very much looking forward to it. As long as it's good I'll be happy. I've waited almost literally my whole life for this movie. The last time that happened was Justice League so let's hope this is a better payoff than that was
Well showtime does a nice f***ing business model!
HONK HONK!
Just like ghostbusters, bettlejuice benefits from having a long running cartoon in the 80s/90s that allow it to stay in the memories of so many children back then.
Take my seat at the crowded theater, to me the original is a well balanced comforting movie I can't stop watching it. When they announced the second coming out i felt nothing. Since it took them awhile to bring out the second one i thought it had a small chance of being decent but in the end it's to much of a money grab type of movie for me. Someday I'll watch the second one in a couple of years but i rather have the original in my head alone and for awhile.
Dan, would love to see an MCU ranking from you on here or Letterboxd now that Deadpool and Wolverine has been out for a bit
Imagine that one followers of yours that hates sharks… he’ll be terrified during one scene of the film
Just seen it and i dunno why every review is praising it saying its Burton s comeback and stuff..i found it so uninspired and dull.. i just dont think the original needed a sequel tbh.. like many original movies in our time who have randomly been given a second one for no reason if not money
I actually agree with literally all of ur points on this one. I enjoyed the hell outta this story flawed movie. O'Hara had me laughing the most. WIshed they focused on just one of the story lines.
this was extremely fun
Before watching your video, I reviewed the movie myself for my social media friends.
I loved the fun of the film, but felt exactly the same as you did regarding the plot and throwaway plot devices.
There was a lot of great acting and avant garde payoff moments that staple gun the movie together, but it loses cohesiveness with the clunky handling of Ryder’s character and the mishmash of Beetlejuice’s motivations because, as you said, there are at least two, maybe three plots happening and none of them really play out satisfactorily.
If not of the bizarre moments and fantastic cast, this would have been a disaster.
So much of it is lovable spectacle and it is a worthy sequel but the lacking plot elements were distracting. I had a good time watching it, but not thinking about it. I’m not sure it will hold up to a rewatch.
Fantastic cast and great acting, looks like they had a lot of fun making it.
Glad to see you have those jokes
Did the father get a ghost?
I had a blast watching Beetlejuice Beetlejuice!
Some audiences TOOOOOOO needy. IS A GREAT movie. Will watch over and over. Every year. Just like the first film
