IAG Currently have a 33 Unit of Mine in For Service. It Is Such an Amazing Timeless Amplifier That i Have Never had Any Desire To Upgrade, let Alone Replace it.. Although i Have Bought A Second Hand 33/303 Unit For The Man Cave. Having heard The "New" 33/303 i Can Highly Recommend it To Anyone In The Market For a Great Sounding Amplifier Set Up.. Nice Review By The Way.
Very informative, appreciated review. Thanks Terry. I really love retro stereo; Just recently I've been considering the new A1 by Musical Fidelity, and now comes this... This set looks gorgeous, I think I'll set out to do some listening to it.
Great Review! I just don't get why companies cheap out on the remotes... at least this one somehow fits aesthetically. Apple has been doing great work with the quality of their remotes. Hegel as well! I know cost cutting is important in this red ocean market, but if I pay 3.000€ on a preamp/power amp combo, I'd like my remote to match the quality of the product. If that means paying another 35-50 bucks, that's worth it.
Thanks for the review. I used to own the original QAUD 33 and I loved the minimalist and small factor size of the system. Esthetically speaking, I would have preferred a more raw material design such as painted metal instead of the aluminum that gives it a plastic feeling. You commented about not being able to see the volume value from far. There is a marking on the knob and actually it doesn’t matter because you set the volume according to your ear and your eyes 😊
Nice review. My OCD wouldn't allow me to have all 3 pieces on one shelf. I would have to place the amps on the floor close to the speakers and the preamp to the right of center with the right side aligned with the equipment on the shelves below. Having a right alignment down the stack. Then I would add some type of item to the left of the preamp so each shelf is full and aligned.
Yep I agree, but next to each other on one shelf was the best way to show how compact this setup is and really it only takes up the same space as an integrated
@@PursuitPerfectSystem The other variable here is that you can use short speaker cables and connect the 33 amps to the 303 using balanced cables. This takes advantage of the superior common mode rejection offered using balance interconnects.
I had the original set back in the 70s as a teenager. A bit expensive for me, but my mom knew the guy who imported them. So, I got a nice 40% discount. I then built my own speakers with a brilliant full tone unit in a transmission line cabinet. I've honestly never heard anything with a better sound.
Thanks Terry. Great review. Agree about the remote, why do manufacturers always cut cost there? It’s the one part of the system we interact with constantly. I don’t need metal but something a little nicer would be … nice. My Audiolab has a nicer remote so we know IAG can do it.
This remote doesn't look flashy on camera because of the colour, but its good to use in the flesh, the buttons are all large and good for my fat fingers.

These quads look lovely, definitely on the want lists, recon great with mission 770. Oh am definitely on team defeat tone control, guess some folks like sugar and cream with their coffee.
I use an old recapped 303 in combination with a bluesound node 2i. Very satisfying combo with good value for money (for which you do not need a 33 pre amp) 🤘
I restored Quad 306 and 606, new electrolytic capacitors etc. And two Quad 34s that I refurbished but left it with completely original values. I tried driving the Quad power amps directly with my Bluesound Node 130, just for fun because I had an idea of what it would sound like. To my ears it was coloured but colourless without verve and timing, without soul and authority. Some people are thinking that because the output voltage of the Node is high enough, they don't need a pre amp. A huge mistake in my opinion. Only the Quad 34 makes the music in the chain, even if its output is attenuated compared to the line in signal. If someone thinks they don't need a pre amp, they are making a big mistake. The lower output impedance of the pre amp alone is very important. BTW the same rules for the new 33 where the line gain is 0 dB.
Cheers mate, loved your review. I wonder what these amps would sound like with quad electrostatics?! I was a big quad fan in the ‘80’s and loved the 606/esl63 combo
As one who owned a 33/303 combination, if the new QUAD units last a quarter as long without failure, it will be a remarkable achievement for Chinese manufacturing.
A few years back , I had a 2nd hand 33/303. I liked it but its quad din controls cheesed me off. Maybe I should have kept it but it got outed for other gear. This new Quad looks great but I already have the Leak 130/Cdt amongst other amps so can't justify. Looks cool 😎
Thanks Terry, I really enjoy your reviews. That's an interesting take on an old classic. I hope it's popular but I'm more interested in the Modwright PH9 XT that you now have in your system. I know you tested the PH9.0 and wanted to try this one. Will you be testing it soon?
The PH9 XT is mine I have bought it so yes it will be staying and I will be speaking about it at some point. I have already replaced the main tubes in it and the power supply the difference they make is crazy but I need a bit more time as I have only had 5 minutes to test it so far
@@PursuitPerfectSystem That's going to be interesting to hear about as I have the PH9.0X without the tube power supply. I've had mine nearly a year now and it certainly doesn't disapoint! It's a stunning sounding phono stage but I'm not sure if I should get the upgraded power supply.
Its impossible for me to say, I bought my used, I started with the included Tube in the power supply. I bought an NOS Mullard from 1959 I think from America that took 5 weeks to get to me and cost a ridiculous amount. However it sounded very different to the included Tube so that changes the sound but I have no way to A/B with and without that upgrade. But it is important is what can take from that test
Hello. When Quad says "triples", they didn't mean per entire amp channel, they meant each half of the output section of the amp, output section triples connected to each power supply rail (+Vcc / -Vcc). I know the circuit well, and have seen many mods to it over the many years since. Really nice circuit, it was, yes. It would be fantastic, methinks, to have a 33/303 "hot-rodded" combo with the original Quad ESL refurbished. Ooooh, yeeeaah! 😊🎶🎶🎶🎶
Tit treble up and then boost bass, gets rid of muddy (@160Hz) frequencies, great for bad recordings or for listening at low levels. Place mono blocks under/beside speakers for shorter loudspeaker cable runs for better sound, because it has symmetrical line in no worries with longer signal runs
Thanks for the nice review! One point that still interests me. Both the new 33 and the new 303 have RCA and XLR outputs/ inputs. Which cables would you use? Many may think that XLR is “great“, if I needed 4 meters, ok. But isn't it true that both 33 and 303 have unblanced single ended circuits? That would mean that XLR might only be realized by an additional opamp. In that case I would have the more pristine sound if I went RCA, because I don't think the new Quad XLR is realized via expensive transformers. What do the others think?
Hi, thanks for the review. I currently have Quad 99 pre-amp into a single 909 power amp and Quad 22L speakers (all purchased 2005). Would this new 33/303 combination give me a noticeably better listening experience - preferably for the next 20 years! Cheers
I bought this Quad together with a pair of Spendor BC1 and Thorens with Shure V-15 type IV in December of 1978 from Audio T in London. My first stereo system, but the Quad started making popping sounds as it heated up. Sorry, that I bought it, although it sounded great, I would have to shut it down to cool down due to the popping. Eventually I gave it away.
Thank you, I am very lucky I get to use Tellurium Q Statement II speaker cables which are pretty extreme high end but I do review very expensive gear too so I do need the right tools
@@PursuitPerfectSystemthey must be immense! I have the Ultra Black Mk II's and I think that's all the speaker cable I'll ever need. Something magical about Tellurium Q.

@PursuitPerfectSystem I think these would be perfect on my 12ohm Zu Omens that I have set up in the dining room. The silver and orange Quad rig looks the business and would make a major visual statement with the Electric Blue Hickory Zu's and be a real conversation starter for dinner guests. I'm gonna give these a go.
They do look great - it might be worth checking the can drive 12 ohms though before you buy them, it seems like a strange impedance for a speaker that I did not test.
@PursuitPerfectSystem well, sir, it's about time you tried some of Utah's finest! Darko has a pair of gorgeous red Zu DWX's that are identical aside from the cabinets, and he has reviewed all sorts of UK and Euro amps with them. I'd send you mine for a test, but I don't think it would be cost effective cross-pond. 😅 You lose a few watts with the higher impedance, but the easy load on your amps and resulting drop in distortion is magic.
Yes to a degree and not necessarily, it depends on the bass and I know how this room behaves and where these are placed you still get a fair bit of room gain as they are not far from a corner of the room. Up against the wall of course gives them even more but that sacrifices sound stage too much, or changes it drastically so its a always a choice, its never perfect
Quad is a brand that a lot of British people are very attached to. It's beyond hi-fi. More like coopers marmalade or old Jag cars. It's a link to a vanishing past and a traditionally British aesthetic. Can chi-fi made quad give us that feeling of the old made in Huntington equipment?
Funny that. My old Quad Elite system has well and truly been relegated to my bedroom in favour of mostly Canadian/US equipment (Simaudio/Classé/Rogue/PS Audio - my DAC is Chinese though)
Heard this combo quite a few times, and never really understood what the fuss is about. It's subjective, of course, but to me it just has no soul: the sound is as dull as ditchwater, and there's practically no dynamics. It's even worse with the so-called "reference" ESL's, which have geat timing but kill all the low frequencies. It's like listening to a TV set. Definitely not for me, but I concede that they look good.
It's well documented that colors have an effect on people. When I see orange, my reaction is "UGH!" I hate it. Just cant see myself looking at the obnoxious color while trying to enjoy music. Seems like an unforced error. Just me, if you love it get your card out.
As I said in the video orange is the colour of the original and by all accounts it was extremely popular but yes I can see it not suiting everyone but its good not everything looks the same too
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Orange is the color of California Department of Transportation workers uniforms. It makes me nervous as Ive had a successful career avoiding any sort of physical labor.
More than 3000€ affordable? Cant we get same or betterwith half price? I believe so. And it sounds best with typical "english" vintage sounding speaker, limitex to them not for. MOst speakers
The Super Linton speakers are not typical vintage sounding at all, maybe check out my review for them. Yes this “affordable” for what it is. It’s not budget which is something different
I own once 2 original 303 and a 33 but honestly I never been impressed but at less they were built in England. Those new versions look amazing, but even if they sound probably better with new faster components the asking price for a Chinese made Quad seem a bit high. You can find better gear for that amount of money.
don't know about this.. 2 mono blocks and the preamp will cost 4500 euro. for what? 70 watt A-B made in china? for around 3000 euro you get a Yamaha A-S2200 ..
@ yeah true. And that’s fine as well :) my wharfedale Evo 4.2, soon to be replaced with super linton and my Cambridge audio stuff are also made in china. But this quad setup is a bit pricey for what it is. (Just in my opinion of course).
Hard to say that until you interact with it and feel the quality. It’s very nicely made gear and your paying more because its 3 chassis 3 power supplies etc.
@@PursuitPerfectSystem As Tim Cook has said these products are made in China because there is better tooling expertise in China, not because of labour cost.
It is electrically impossible for a bridged amplifier to produce more power than the sum of its channels. ‘Triples’ does not mean ‘3 transistors per channel’. There are 10 per channel in the original 303. It means 3 transistors per half of the output stage per channel, instead of the usual two.
When you said that you'd never heard of the original 33/303 you lost all credibility. Then all you do is say what a data sheet would say. Utter waste of time
Very harsh comment maybe take a minute and have a look at everything I have listened to, it’s extremely extensive. I wasn’t alive when the original 33/303 came out or I was still very young. What matter is how the new 33/303 compares to offerings available today. I have a ton of experience with those
@@PursuitPerfectSystem The original 33/303 were iconic as were their valve 22/II which preceded them. Slightly before my time but any hi fi person should know them, that was , along with Leak designs the beginning of hi-fi. Are you aware of their electrostatic loud speakers? Or is that another thing you don't know? Give them a listen. Your comment about using bridge mode was interesting however.
I know now the 33/303 are iconic but no one has talked about them 20 years so its not like I have been living under a rock to not know them, you can only know what you have seen in your lifetime. For the ESL you can see me interviewing one of the designers here ruclips.net/video/zl-DaovyZaM/видео.html. I get about more than you might realise if this is your first PPS video - I have seen and done a lot in the 8 years I have been running this channel.
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Yes it the first PPS video I watched. I saw the new 33/303 in my local hi-fi shop only yesterday so had to check them out. I used the original 33/303 for years and still have them though not currently in use. Maybe you can do a video of iconic hi-fi. Thanks for the link
Quad makes fantastic speakers. But to me this quad 33 +303 misses the mark. Expensive, missing features and remote is missing controls (amps must be turned off manually). For less money can get Leak stereo 130 or yamaha rn1000 or marantz 7000n or rotel ra-1572 or nad c3050
It’s a pre power setup every pre power has to be turned on individually or linked with trigger cables as you can do here. It’s not missing any features in fact it has more than typical for being a purely analogue pre power. Streaming amps have other bits in them that does not make them better it normally makes them worse as the build budget is divided by more things. I think you’re looking at this totally wrong for what this is looking to be. You can’t compare it to an nad that is trying to a one box do it all. This is not looking to be that.
@PursuitPerfectSystem Yes what you say is true, its NOT a one box. I was hoping they would have went way Leak and NAD did... adding modern features to retro looking boxes. I have had real good luck introducing modern features to my audio buds. So i like to encourage features added to equip with quality amps and dacs built in.
They would cost a lot more if not. Designed by the team in the UK, guys who have worked for QUAD for decades and service QUAD speakers from the early days. I have met these guys so know they are real :)

These should come with a matching lava lamp. Y
People who moan about tone controls don't know what they are talking about.....🤨
It's well documented that colors have an effect on people. When I see orange, my reaction is "UGH!" I hate it. Just cant see myself looking at the obnoxious color while trying to enjoy music. Seems like an unforced error. Just me, if you love it get your card out.
As I said in the video orange is the colour of the original and by all accounts it was extremely popular but yes I can see it not suiting everyone but its good not everything looks the same too
Ahaha, I actually like it. Reminds me of those old, amber KGM Edgelit displays. And the whole thing looks very "Space 1999" or "UFO".
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Orange is the color of California Department of Transportation workers uniforms. It makes me nervous as Ive had a successful career avoiding any sort of physical labor.
@@fletchermunson6225 and some prisoner uniforms too :D
Completely agree. I couldn't live with that orange!
Wish Quad had integrated eARC to prove full modern connectivity.
Its an all analogue preamp, so there is no digital in it for an EARC circuit
I see thanks for that though
More than 3000€ affordable? Cant we get same or betterwith half price? I believe so. And it sounds best with typical "english" vintage sounding speaker, limitex to them not for. MOst speakers
The Super Linton speakers are not typical vintage sounding at all, maybe check out my review for them. Yes this “affordable” for what it is. It’s not budget which is something different
It's all relative. I have over double that invested in just my cables 😬
I own once 2 original 303 and a 33 but honestly I never been impressed but at less they were built in England. Those new versions look amazing, but even if they sound probably better with new faster components the asking price for a Chinese made Quad seem a bit high. You can find better gear for that amount of money.
So basically, the quad amps pre-power are a 99 without the flake or raspberry ripple.
Thats a great comment, but I dont get it ... :)
Not in the slightest. The 99 is not a triples design.
don't know about this.. 2 mono blocks and the preamp will cost 4500 euro. for what? 70 watt A-B made in china? for around 3000 euro you get a Yamaha A-S2200 ..
Yamaha is made in Malaysia and not everyone wants the same thing
Made in china
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Yesterday I went back to the shop for a listening session I ended up buying them!
Horses for courses, we DEFINATELY do not want all HiFi to end up being the same and defo not everything all in the one box all the time.
Quad… now made in China 😢
They would cost a lot more if not. Designed by the team in the UK, guys who have worked for QUAD for decades and service QUAD speakers from the early days. I have met these guys so know they are real :)
I know, but still…
Not for me, I can’t handle that ugly orange. Maybe the display but I would have to paint the buttons black.
Made in China
If you wouldn't buy a new MG auto, why would you push this?
Volume control on wrong side lol
I’ll buy these gems 💎💎💎🫡🇬🇧
